Activated carbon fiber modified with hyperbranched polyethylenimine and phytic acid for the effective adsorption and separation of In(III)

Xuezhen Gao,Zhiyong Cao,Changzhen Li,Junshen Liu,Xunyong Liu,Lei Guo

As a supporting material in the high-tech field, the distribution of indium in the earth's crust is small and scattered. An efficient material is required to selectively adsorb indium from the leaching of other minerals and secondary resources. In this study, an adsorbent phytic acid–hyperbranched polyethyleneimine–oxidized carbon fiber (PA–HPEI–OACF) was prepared by modifying carbon fibers with hyperbranched polyethyleneimine (HPEI) and phytic acid (PA) for the efficient adsorption and separation of In(III) in hydrochloric acid media. The adsorption and separation of absorbents was investigated using static adsorption. The adsorption mechanism of absorbents for In(III) was determined by XPS. The maximum adsorption capacity of PA–HPEI–OACF for In(III) was 34.21 mg L−1 at 298 K and pH of 3.5. The adsorption process of PA–HPEI–OACF for In(III) conforms to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and involves an endothermic reaction. The adsorption isotherm follows the Freundlich isotherm adsorption model. In the In(III), Fe(II), Cu(II), and Zn(II) mixed solution, PA–HPEI–OACF only adsorbed In(III) and Fe(II) at pH 3.5, and the selectivity coefficient of PA–HPEI–OACF for In(III) over Fe(II) was 798.81. The XPS analysis revealed that the adsorption of PA–HPEI–OACF for In(III) was the result of the combined action of amine groups and phosphate groups with In(III).

Durable flame retardant wool fabric treated by phytic acid and TiO2 using an exhaustion-assisted pad-dry-cure process

Xian-Wei Cheng,Jin-Ping Guan,Xu-Hong Yang,Ren-Cheng Tang

A novel and durable organic-inorganic flame retardant (FR) system for wool fabric was fabricated using natural phytic acid (PA), titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) nanoparticles and 1,2,3,4-butanetetracarboxylic acid (BTCA). In order to address the diffusion barrier action of wool fiber to the FR agents, an additional exhaustion process was employed ahead of the traditional pad-dry-cure procedure. The flame retardancy, smoke generation, thermal stability, and washing durability of the treated fabrics were discussed. The PA/TiO 2 /BTCA system endowed wool fabric with excellent flame retardancy and washing durability. The treated fabric was still able to self-extinguish after 30 washing cycles. Moreover, the FR system effectively reduced the smoke generation capacity. Thermogravimetry test shows that the FR system altered the thermal decomposition behavior of wool, and the formation of thermal protective intumescent char mainly contributed to the improved flame retardancy, revealing a significant condensed-phase FR mechanism of the treated wool.

Rational design of non-hazardous phytic acid-functionalized graphene oxide for polymer nanocomposites toward reinforcing corrosion resistance performance applications

Fengyuan Zhang,Weiqu Liu,Chunhua Liu,Shuo Wang,Hongyi Shi,Liyan Liang,Ke Pi

Corrosion protection of water-borne polyurethane (WPU) containing phytic acid-decorated graphene oxide (PG) for Q235 steel was investigated in this work. Natural and non-hazardous phytic acid (PA) was applied to modify graphene oxide (GO) for enhancing its dispersion and compatibility with WPU. The results of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Thermalgravimetric analysis, and Atomic force microscopy demonstrated successful decoration of GO by PA. Scanning electron microscopy and Field-emission high-resolution transmission electron microscopy were used to reveal the morphology structures of GO and PG. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and polarization curves were applied to investigate the anti-corrosion performance of WPU loaded with PG nanoparticles. Results revealed that the WPU/PG composite coatings presented an excellent enhancement in long-term anti-corrosion performance. The reason was that the modification of GO by PA not only improved compatibility with WPU, enabling the formation of an efficient barrier to play a physical anti-corrosion effect, but also formed stable metal chelate complexes with iron ions. Moreover, WPU/PG 0.05 has the best anti-corrosion ability and “self-healing” function to some degree. Therefore, the advantages of PG can be used as an effective anti-corrosion nanofiller in practical application.

Effect of Alginate Additives on the Microstructure and Properties of Phytic Acid-based Conversion Coating on a Steel Surface

Yong Lu,Huixia Feng

Phytic acid (PA) has a potential use as a coating on metal surface to retard corrosion. However, a loose structure and micro-cracks in the phytic acid coating layer damage the tightness of the coating, providing channels for the infiltration of corrosive media and seriously weakening the protective effect of the coating. Sodium alginate (SA) was added as an accelerating agent to improve the anti-corrosion protective effect and coating densification of the phytic acid coating on a Q235 steel surface. The micro-morphology, elemental composition and elemental chemical state of different samples were observed by the surface analysis technologies of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) equipped with X-ray energy dispersive spectrum (EDS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), all of which show a dense and homogenous phytic acid film with lower crack was precipitated on the sample treated by PA-SA conversion coating. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and contact angle measurements were used to evaluate the adhesion properties of the prepared coating and the results showed that the PA-SA coated steel exhibited better wettability and adhesion to the top layers compared to the bare steel and phytic acid coating. The electrochemical measurements show that the corrosion resistance of the conversion coating was markedly improved on the steel substrate treated by phytic acid conversion bath containing SA.

Phytic acid-assisted hollow Fe2P/N-C nanoshuttle derived from NH2MIL: Synthesis strategy and electrochemical application for hydrogen evolution

Yuxiao Gong,Lian-Hua Xu,Xue-Ji Zhang,Serge Cosnier,Dan Shan

In energy conversion issues, to boost the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), rational design and synthesis of earth-abundant transition metal phosphides-based materials as efficient electrocatalysts are of great significance. In this work, we report a facile, green and secure approach to synthesize the Fe 2 P/N doped carbon-based hollow nanoshuttles, denoted herein as NH 2 MIL-PA-900, with enhanced HER performances. The highly porous NH 2 MIL and phytic acid (PA) were carefully selected as the self-sacrificed template and etching agent to construct the hollow structure, respectively. Moreover, the in situ coordinated biocompatible PA with Fe 3+ can also be used as the phosphorus source for the metal phosphating during the subsequent high-temperature carbonization process at 900 °C. NH 2 MIL-PA-900 possesses a hollow shuttle-like nanostructure with highly dispersed Fe 2 P nanoparticles on the shell. When used as an electrocatalyst for HER, NH 2 MIL-PA-900 exhibits a low overpotential (157 mV at 10 mA cm −2 ) and a small Tafel slope (76 mV dec −1 ).

Effect of Processing Factors and Ambient Conditions on Phytic Acid Conversion Coating on Zinc by Atmospheric Corrosion Monitor Sensor

Xiaoming Wang,Xingeng Li,Xuelei Tian,Kai Guo

Both the effect of forming conditions on corrosion resistance of phytic acid conversion coating on zinc in air and the influence of ambient factors (temperature and relative humidity) on service of conversion coating were studied by SEM, EDS, ACM and SKP. Zinc-graphite ACM sensors and zinc plates were treated with phytic acid solution at different processing time and pH values. The results showed that longer processing time and alkalinity phytic acid solution weaken the corrosion resistance of treated zinc. Self-assembled monolayer of zinc phytate provided the best protection. The corrosion resistance of conversion coating with phytic acid solution was reduced when the ambient temperature or relative humidity is high values, which due to the zinc phytate bond strength with zinc matrix and co-adoption water on it.

Synergistic Effect of Phytic Acid and Benzyltrimethyl Ammonium Bromide on Corrosion Inhibition of Carbon Steel in 0.5 M HCl

Weipeng Zhang,Zhe Zhang,Wenwu Li,Xiaodong Huang,Le Ruan,Ling Wu

The synergistic corrosion inhibition effect of phytic acid (PA) and benzyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (BAB) on 1045 carbon steel (CS) in 0.5 M HCl is reported. Electrochemical measurements showed that PA and BAB can reduce the corrosion rate of 1045 CS in HCl solution and act as excellent corrosion inhibitors. The best inhibition efficiency n i of the combination inhibitor of PA with BAB is 90.6%. SEM images of the corroded steel surfaces suggest that the PA and BAB are simultaneously adsorbed on the CS surface to inhibit the corrosion of iron. The synergistic inhibition mechanism is investigated by dynamic simulations and quantum chemistry.

Bio-based Phytic Acid/chitosan and Polycarboxylic Acid for Eco-friendly Flame Retardant and Anti-crease of Cotton Fabric

Yinchun Fang,Weihao Sun,Lin Li,Qian Wang

Cotton is one of the most common natural textile fiber, while the high flammability and easy to crease restrict its applications. Improving the flame retardancy and anti-crease property of cotton fabric is very important for its industrial applications. In this study, phytic acid and chitosan were used to construct bio-based IFR system which was used along with eco-friendly 1,2,3,4-butanetetracarboxylic acid (BTCA) to enhance the flame retardant and crease-resistant properties of cotton fabric simultaneously. The results of LOI and vertical burning indicated that the multifunctional modified cotton fabric would greatly improve the flame retardant properties. The modified cotton achieved the LOI values of over 31% indicating excellent flame retardancy. And the multifunctional modified cotton fabric obtained the CRA over 260° revealing excellent crease-resistant performance. This research provides basis for the development of multifunctional modification of natural cellulosic fibers to improve their flame retardant and crease-resistant properties using bio-based products and eco-friendly polycarboxylic acid.

Efficient removal of uranium (VI) with a phytic acid-doped polypyrrole/ carbon felt electrode using double potential step technique

Jie Huang,Zhirong Liu,Dejuan Huang,Tianxiang Jin,Yong Qian

In order to efficiently extract uranium from uranium-containing wastewater, a novel acid doped polypyrrole/carbon felt (PA-PPy/CF) electrode was prepared via a facile electrodeposition method. For this material, PA and PPy combined to form a stable chemical structure by a charge compensation mechanism. The electrochemical characterization results showed that PA-PPy can significantly accelerate the electrochemical reduction rate of uranium ions. Moreover, a double potential step technique (DPST) was applied to prevent water splitting and maintained the electrocatalytic reduction activity of the surface groups during the electrochemical adsorption process . The removal efficiency obtained by the DPST method was six times higher than that obtained by the conventional chemical adsorption . When the concentrations of uranyl nitrate were 10, 20, 50, and 100 mg/L, the removal efficiencies of uranium were 98.8%, 98.1%, 94.6%, and 93.7%, and the adsorption capacities of uranium were 164.7, 326.9, 788.5, and 1562.0 mg/g, respectively. This material also showed an excellent recycling performance and remarkable selectivity for uranium ions. This work may shed light on the development of removal system for uranium (VI).

Porous phytic acid-doped sodium alginate aerogels as the electrode material for the electrosorption of uranium from acidic solution

Luo Qingyun,Jin Tianxiang,huang Jie,Liu Zhirong,Huang Dejuan,Qian Yong

Abstract A novel phytic acid-doped sodium alginate aerogel (Alg-PA) was prepared via a simple doping and freeze-drying method and was used as a self-supporting electrode material to remove uranium ions from aqueous solutions. The effects of chemical composition, UO 2 2+ concentration, solution pH, and applied voltage on the adsorption of UO 2 2+ were investigated. Chemical adsorption was found to be the main mechanism of uranium adsorption and the application of voltage can effectively improve the adsorption capacity and adsorption rate in this removal system. The experimental maximum capacity of the Alg-PA electrode was 430.8 mg/g, while the theoretical maximum capacity of Alg-PA was found to be 563.8 mg/g. Moreover, Alg-PA also has a good reusability and selectivity to uranium ions. These advantages make Alg-PA a promising material for extracting of uranium from uranium-containing solutions. Phytic acid-Cu2+ framework/Cu2-xS nanocomposites with heat-shock protein down-modulation ability for enhanced multimodal combination therapy

Qian Ren,Xiaojing Zhang,Yangyi Sheng,Nuo Yu,Maoquan Li,Zhigang Chen

Mild-temperature photothermal therapy (mPTT) has shown some advantages over traditional photothermal therapy, such as reducing the damage to surrounding healthy tissues and minimizing side effects. Nevertheless, cancer cells can easily repair damage caused by mild hyperthermia due to heat shock proteins (HSPs). Thus, it is imperative to maximize the mPTT efficiency by down-regulating HSPs overexpression and combining other cancer treatments. Herein, we report the synthesis of phytic acid (PA)-Cu 2+ framework/copper sulfide (Cu 2-x S) nanocomposites (abbreviated as PA-Cu/Cu 2-x S NPs) as the novel therapeutic platform that can down-regulate HSPs overexpression for enhanced multimodal mPTT/chemodynamic therapy (CDT)/chemotherapy. PA-Cu/Cu 2-x S NPs were prepared through self-assembly and in-situ vulcanization strategy, resulting in irregular-shaped particles with an approximate size of 100 nm. PA-Cu/Cu 2-x S NPs display a plasmon effect from Cu 2-x S, which enhances near-infrared (NIR) absorption and possesses excellent photothermal conversion efficiency (41.7%). Moreover, PA-Cu/Cu 2-x S NPs exhibit Fenton-like reaction activity resulting from the Cu ions for CDT, and the reaction activity can be further improved 1.3 times due to mild hyperthermia during mPTT. Furthermore, the generated hydroxyl radical (•OH) can effectively decrease HSPs level to enhance mPTT. PA-Cu/Cu 2-x S NPs can also serve as a drug delivery system, and they are capable of loading doxorubicin (DOX) with a loading ability (20.7%). Combining mPTT/CDT/chemotherapy exhibits significant inhibition of tumor growth. This approach can serve as a basis for designing more exquisite platforms that combine mPTT with other therapies to achieve more effective cancer treatment.

Highly Enhanced Efficiency of Planar Perovskite Solar Cells by an Electron Transport Layer Using Phytic Acid–Complexed SnO2 Colloids

Congcong Liu,Haijun Su,Keyu Xie,Hongqiang Wang,Peng Zhai,Ninghui Chang,Shan Zhang,Qingfu Ban,Min Guo,Jun Zhang,Lin Liu

SnO 2 aqueous colloids as electron transport layers (ETLs) have been widely employed in planar perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, the surface defects and energy level mismatch at the SnO 2 ETL/perovskite interface are still great challenges for the power conversion efficiency (PCE) improvement. Herein, a natural and nontoxic phytic acid (PA) compound is introduced into the SnO 2 aqueous colloids to prepare the ETL to depress its defects, and systematically study the influence of different PA complexation on the photovoltaic performance of PSCs. The results demonstrate that PA complexation can assemble unique coordination complexes between PA and SnO 2 nanocrystals (NCs) in a new bonding of Sn  O  P, which can passivate SnO 2 inherent surface defects and tune the electronic properties of SnO 2 ETLs. PA complexation can significantly disaggregate the SnO 2 oligomers and reduce the cluster size distribution from 98.37 to 15.87 nm. Meanwhile, the reduction of surface trap states inhibits the potential barriers, thus the electrical conductivity is about two times as high as compared with the pristine SnO 2 ETLs. Consequently, a high PCE of 21.43% in PA-SnO 2 -based PSCs is obtained, which presents an improvement of 10.9% over that of the pristine SnO 2 -based PSCs.
