In aqueous zinc-ion batteries, the growth of dendrite, hydrogen evolution reaction, and corrosion on the Zn anode result in rapid performance degradation and poor cycling stability, which significantly impede their commercial application. Herein, a tea polyphenol-zinc ion complex (denoted as Tp-Zn) is used as an electrolyte additive to reshape the Zn 2+ solvation structure and guide uniform zinc deposition. Tp-Zn interacts with water molecules via hydrogen bonding of hydroxyl groups, weakening the Zn 2+ -H 2 O solvation sheath and suppressing water-related side reactions. Moreover, Tp-Zn induces preferential Zn deposition, contributing to homogeneous zinc deposition. As a result, the Zn//Zn symmetric cell assembled with Tp-Zn achieves an ultra-long cycle life of over 4000 h at 0.5 mA cm −2 and more than 1300 h at 2.0 mA cm −2 . The Zn//Cu asymmetric cell can maintain stable plating and stripping for more than 900 cycles at 1.0 mA cm −2 , and the Zn//NaVO full cell maintains high specific capacity during stable cycling. This green and non-toxic Tp-Zn additive effectively stabilizes the Zn anode interface and enhances cycling durability, providing a new reference for the exploration of the commercialization of ZIBs.

Innovative TRDES-UAE for green polyphenol extraction from sorghum bran • Higher phenolic yields than conventional solvents & control DES • Enhanced bioactivity linked to SEM/molecular docking findings • Excellent recyclability (>85% efficiency over multiple cycles) This study developed a green extraction method using a switchable temperature-responsive deep eutectic solvent (TRDES) combined with ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) for polyphenol recovery from sorghum bran. TRDES formation was confirmed by FT-IR. Under optimized conditions, TRDES-UAE significantly enhanced the total polyphenol yields (22.14 mg/g DW), total flavonoid yields (24.71 mg/g DW), and total proanthocyanidins yields (29.47 mg/g DW), representing 1.15- to 6.02-fold higher yields than conventional solvents and a conventional DES. SEM revealed pronounced plant matrix disruption by TRDES, and molecular docking confirmed strong binding affinities between TRDES and target polyphenols. The TRDES extract exhibited potent antioxidant activity—DPPH IC 50 : 90.39 μg/mL; ABTS + IC 50 : 101.55 μg/mL; superoxide anion IC 50 : 117.30 μg/mL; hydroxyl radical IC 50 : 124.24 μg/mL; FRAP value: 1081.29 μmol Fe 2+ /L—as well as strong antibacterial activity, with MIC values of 0.15 mg/mL against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli , and 0.10 mg/mL against Salmonella enterica . Six greenness metrics validated the environmental benefits, and TRDES maintained >85% extraction efficiency over five consecutive reuse cycles. This work establishes TRDES-UAE as a sustainable strategy for sorghum bran upcycling with potential for functional food applications.

Diabetic osteoporosis (DOP) is a chronic complication of diabetes mellitus characterized by reduced bone mass, disrupted microarchitecture, and an elevated fracture risk. Persistent oxidative stress and inflammation further inhibit osteogenesis and angiogenesis, accelerating bone degeneration. In this study, we used a peptide-polyphenol conjugation strategy to develop a multifunctional colloidal nanoplatform (β-GP@EGCG-E7). The bone-targeting peptide E7 was covalently conjugated with epigallocatechin-3- gallate (EGCG) and subsequently loaded with β-glycerophosphate (β-GP). Sequentially, this nanoplatform integrates bone-targeted delivery, improving mitochondrial quality by anti-inflammation and antioxidation, as well as osteogenesis and angiogenesis within a single system. In detail, in a high glucose microenvironment, the nanoplatform selectively accumulates in bone lesions, scavenges excess intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) triggered by high glucose, clears damaged mitochondria by activating PINK1-Parkin mediated mitophagy, and exerts anti-inflammatory effects to rebalance the microenvironment of bone regeneration. Concurrently, sustained phosphate release supports mineralization, promotes osteogenic differentiation, enhances angiogenesis, and improves local microcirculation. In diabetic osteoporotic models, β-GP@EGCG-E7 significantly reduced oxidative stress, restored mitochondrial homeostasis, and promoted bone and vascular regeneration. This study provides a promising therapeutic strategy for DOP and highlights the potential of peptide-polyphenol hybrid nanomaterials for regenerative applications.

A tannic acid–modified silk fibroin adhesive enables rapid gelation, wet adhesion, and intrinsic self-healing behavior. • Polyphenol-mediated silk fibroin forms a dynamic network via hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interactions. • The chitosan /silk fibroin-tannic acid patch exhibits strong adhesion and stability on biological and polymeric substrates. • The patch promotes to seal annulus fibrosus defect in vivo and preserves disc hydration and biomechanics. Annulus fibrosus defects disrupt the structural integrity and mechanical balance of the intervertebral disc, leading to nucleus pulposus herniation and subsequent nerve compression, which ultimately results in pain and related clinical symptoms. Therefore, developing biocompatible materials capable of effectively sealing annulus fibrosus defects is of great clinical significance for preventing nucleus pulposus extrusion and restoring disc function. In this study, we developed a wet-adhesive patch composed of silk fibroin-tannic acid adhesive integrated with a chitosan film (CS/SF-TA patch) for effective sealing of annulus fibrosus defects. The assembly of the SF-TA adhesive was driven by hydrophobic interactions and hydrogen bonding, enabling rapid gelation, strong wet adhesion, and self-healing capability. The CS/SF-TA patch achieved an interfacial adhesion strength with 71 kPa on wet porcine skin, while exhibiting antioxidative activity. In addition, the patch underwent swelling-mediated integration with surrounding tissues and demonstrates favorable biocompatibility. In vivo studies further showed that the composite patch effectively sealed annulus fibrosus defects, preserved nucleus pulposus hydration, and significantly attenuated disc degeneration. This polyphenol-mediated silk fibroin assembly strategy, combined with a chitosan substrate, provided a versatile platform for robust wet-tissue adhesion and may be extended to a wide range of biomedical applications requiring mechanically support and self-healing adhesive materials. The polyphenol-mediated CS/SF–TA composite patch, assembled through hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interactions, exhibits robust wet adhesion, antioxidant activity, and excellent biocompatibility, enabling effective sealing of AF defects and preservation of IVD structure and hydration in vivo . In recent years, plant polyphenols have emerged as promising, eco-friendly desensitizers for energetic materials. By employing a bionic interface design, we successfully constructed core–shell structured Cyclotetramethylene tetranitroamine (HMX)@polyphenol composites, wherein plant polyphenols form a continuous protective coating. This coating effectively shields the energetic core from external stimuli, leading to a significant improvement in safety. Specifically, the impact sensitivity of the composite was reduced by 1.92 times compared to that of pure HMX. This work successfully integrates the advantages of natural polyphenols with advanced material design, demonstrating substantial potential for developing safer energetic materials.

The excessive release of heavy metals and organic dyes in water poses a serious threat to the ecosystem. However, most synthetic adsorbents are unsatisfactory in terms of preparation, economy and properties. Developing an inexpensive and excellent adsorbent that is easy to synthesize is urgent. Fortunately, sugarcane bagasse (SB), a cheap biomass material, can remove a few wastewater pollutants, but it fails to achieve practical application needs. Herein, we proposed a strategy for SB-Fe-TA preparation by precipitation complexation of tannic acid (TA) on SB. Batch experiments showed that the maximum theoretical removals of Pb(II) and methylene blue (MB) by SB-Fe-TA were 797.72 mg/g and 758.95 mg/g, respectively. Moreover, the practical performance test results showed that SB-Fe-TA had high efficiency and universality for mixed pollutants. The continuous-flow reaction testing of the solutions showed that the removal rate of MB was still close to 100 % within 100 h. The excellent properties of SB-Fe-TA were due to the abundant functional groups on the surface. This work provides a novel avenue for developing multi-functional, cheap and efficient bio-based adsorbent for wastewater treatment.

The emerging technology of inhibiting polyphenol oxidase (PPO) is crucial for preventing enzymatic browning in food. This study aimed to investigate the effects of 4.5 kJ/m 2 ultraviolet (UV)-C radiation and 0.02 mg/mL L-cysteine (L-cys) treatment on the enzyme activity, physico-chemical properties, thermal properties, structure, and molecular microstructure of PPO. UV-C/L-cys decreased PPO activity and had the highest aggregation index and turbidity of PPO. UV-C/L-cys further reduced the denaturation temperature point and increased the denaturation enthalpy of PPO. UV-C/L-cys turned the α-helix to random coil of PPO and destroyed the tertiary structure. This combined treatment aggregated the microstructure of PPO, which led to covering the active center of the enzyme, leading to its inactivation. Molecular docking simulation confirmed that L-cys bound to PPO through hydrogen bonding and ionic contact. This study established a foundation for the application of UV-C radiation and L-cys treatment to control food browning.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of starch gelatinization degree on the complexation mode and complexation strength of polyphenols (chlorogenic acid), as well as the changes in the physicochemical properties of potato starch with varying degrees of gelatinization before and after the addition of chlorogenic acid. The result show that the degree of gelatinization of potato starch increased from 0 % to 100 %, while the recombination rate of chlorogenic acid increased from 21.92 ± 0.67 % to 40.93 ± 0.15 %. An increase in gelatinization degree enhances the interaction between chlorogenic acid and potato starch, resulting in the formation of V-type complexes. The setback value of potato starch with 100 % pasting degree decreased from 27.74 ± 3.65 (×10 2 mPa s) to 24.78 ± 0.73 (×10 2 mPa s) after chlorogenic acid was added. The results showed that chlorogenic acid delayed the retrogradation of potato starch. The addition of chlorogenic acid enhanced the thermal stability of potato starch. The markedly bound water content (A 21 ) of potato starch-chlorogenic acid complex gels increased from 0.96 ± 0.10 % to 2.24 % ± 0.14 % as the degree of gelatinization from 0 % to 100 %, indicative of an enhanced water-holding capacity of potato starch gels by chlorogenic acid. These findings provide a theoretical foundation for expanding the use of potato starch in the food industry and improving the quality of starch-based foods.

Acetaminophen (APAP) overdose has long been recognized as the main cause of drug-induced liver injury (DILI), characterized by glutathione (GSH) depletion and reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation, leading to ferroptosis and inflammatory responses. There is an urgent need for liver-protective agents to combat ferroptosis, modulate oxidative stress, and ameliorate inflammation. Catechin, a well-known polyphenol compound, has been shown to have antioxidant potential. However, its protective role on APAP-induced liver injury (AILI) has not been elucidated. In this study, we evaluated the modulating effects of catechin on AILI and observed that catechin attenuated liver injury by reducing inflammation. Mechanistically, catechin alleviated hepatic oxidative stress by inhibiting ROS accumulation, malondialdehyde (MDA) production, and GSH depletion. Furthermore, catechin, as a hepatic injury reparative agent, could counteract APAP-induced hepatocyte ferroptosis by activating the xCT/GPX4 pathway, and is expected to be a novel natural inhibitor of ferroptosis. Additionally, the transcriptomic results indicated that the inhibition of Stat1 by catechin is important for the management of AILI. Inhibition of signal transducer and activator of transcription 1 (STAT1) expression, achieved through the use of the STAT1 inhibitor fludarabine in vivo and small interfering RNA (siRNA) in vitro, was confirmed to attenuate APAP-induced ferroptosis. In conclusion, the present study identified a novel natural drug inhibitor of ferroptosis and revealed its mechanism of action to inhibit ferroptosis, regulate oxidative stress, and ameliorate inflammation in AILI. This further provides new insights into the novel natural ferroptosis inhibitors for the treatment of ROS-related inflammatory diseases.

The aqueous zinc-ion battery (AZIB) is regarded as one of the most promising energy storage solutions. However, its widespread adoption is hindered by challenges such as zinc dendrite formation and undesirable side reactions, primarily caused by excess free water molecules and ions. This study introduces an ethylene oxide (PEO)-based gel electrolyte designed to address these limitations. By incorporating a zinc-rich ionic conductor (TP-Zn) that establishes a cross-linked hydrogen bond network, we successfully reduce the crystallinity of the PEO matrix and enhance the ionic conductivity and mechanical strength of the electrolyte. The resulting PGPS@TP-Zn gel electrolyte exhibits a remarkable tensile deformation of up to 1785%. The incorporation of TP-Zn significantly alleviates interfacial challenges between the electrolyte and electrode, leading to a more uniform zinc ion flux distribution. This, in turn, improves ion transport kinetics, resulting in a high ionic conductivity of 1.32 × 10–3 S cm–1 and a zinc ion transference number of 0.86. Furthermore, the Zn||Zn symmetrical cell shows exceptional stability when using PGPS@TP-Zn, with a cycle life exceeding 3000 h at a current density of 1 mA cm–2 and a capacity of 1 mAh cm–2. In addition, the Zn||PGPS@TP-Zn||α-MnO2 full cell maintains a capacity retention of 76.9% even after 1000 cycles at a current of 2 A g–1. Remarkably, the assembled pouch cell functions normally even when bent to a maximum angle of 180 degrees. This study highlights the significant practical advantages of the PGPS@TP-Zn gel electrolyte design for advanced AZIB applications.

The growing global demand for clean water and sustainable energy necessitates the development of eco-friendly technologies for seawater desalination. A green and efficient photothermal conversion aerogel (CFA) is developed for incorporating naturally derived chlorogenic acid (CA) and Fe3+ ions into an acrylamide (AM) matrix via chelation and freeze-drying. CFA broadens light absorption and enhances solar-to-thermal conversion efficiency. Under one sun (100 mW·cm–2) irradiation, CFA heats up to 127.4 and 63.9 °C in the dry and wet states, respectively. The water evaporation rate reaches 3.367 kg·m–2·h–1. CFA exhibits excellent stability during long-term use and repeated recycling. Even in an extreme salt environment (25 wt % NaCl), the evaporation rate remains at 3.166 kg·m–2·h–1. A small-scale desalination device confirms effective ion removal (>96% for Ca2+ and >99.9% for K+, Na+, and Mg2+), meeting WHO drinking water standards. CFA serves as a sustainable, cost-effective, and scalable solution for solar-driven desalination with potential applications in off-grid or resource-limited settings.

Postoperative infection significantly increases the risk of failure in titanium (Ti) dental implants. While the local application of antimicrobial agents can effectively mitigate these infections. Electrospinning has gained considerable attention for its ability to produce high-performance nanofibers suitable for localized drug release. Nevertheless, challenges such as weak interfacial bond with Ti surface limits its application as a surface coating strategy. In this study, we developed a novel electrospun coating composed of a plant polyphenol, epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG)-modified polycaprolactone (PCL) and gelatin (Gel), which enhanced its adhesion to the Ti surface through phenol-amine chemistry. This innovative approach significantly enhanced the interfacial bond strength between the nanofibers and the Ti surface, thereby improving the wear resistance of the coating. Additionally, the incorporation of rifampicin (Rif), a broad-spectrum antibiotic, into the EGCG-modified electrospun coating (Ti/NFs-0.5 %EG@Rif) enabled sustained Rif release over 28 days, providing potential long-term antibacterial activity. Both in vitro and in vivo studies demonstrated that the Ti/NFs-0.5 %EG@Rif coating exhibited significantly enhanced antibacterial and anti-inflammatory efficacy, along with excellent biocompatibility. In conclusion, the EGCG-modified electrospun coating represented a promising and cost-effective strategy for enhancing the functionality of Ti implants, with the potential to improve clinical outcomes in dental applications.
