Attributing to high theoretical specific capacity and energy density , lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs) are receiving great attention. However, the commercialization of such technology is seriously hindered by the shuttle effect of polysulfides during the round-trip charge and discharge process. Herein, with three types of carbon materials and ZrO 2 nanoparticles filled in polyetherimide (PEI) support framework with good stability, porous composite films were obtained by a simple non-solvent phase separation (NIPS) as free-standing interlayers for LSBs. The obtained interlayers can not only provide hierarchical channels for improving lithium-ion transfer number, but also own excellent physicochemical stability and strong adsorption capability towards lithium polysulfide (LiPS). Compared with the pristine one, the representative LSB with graphene/polyetherimide/ZrO 2 interlayer (GPZ) shows good initial cycle discharge specific capacity (1280 mAh g −1 ), better capacity retention (749 mAh g −1 after 200 cycles) and good rate performance (580 mAh g −1 at 2C). This work provides a facile and promising way to achieve functional interlayer with high stability for high performance LSBs.

Rechargeable magnesium batteries (RMBs) are a promising large-scale energy-storage technology with low cost and high reliability. However, developing high-performance cathode materials remains the most prominent obstacle because of the insufficient magnesium-storage active sites and unfavorable magnesium cation transport paths, as well as the strong interaction between the cathode material and the bivalent magnesium cation. Herein, ammonium tetrathiomolybdate is demonstrated to be a high-performance RMB cathode material. Ammonium tetrathiomolybdate exhibits a high capacity of 333 mAh g–1 at 50 mA g–1 and a good rate performance of 129 mAh g–1 at 5.0 A g–1 (∼15 C). An amorphous structure with plenty of efficient magnesium-storage active sites and open magnesium transport paths is in situ formed during the first cycle via ammonium extraction. The covalent-like bond between the molybdenum and sulfur delocalizes the negative charge, weakening the interaction with the bivalent magnesium cation and accelerating the kinetics. The covalent-like molybdenum–sulfur bond also promotes the simultaneous redox of molybdenum and sulfur, leading to a high specific capacity. The present work introduces a high-capacity and high-power RMB cathode material, elucidates the origin of the high performance, and provides insights for the design and optimization of RMB cathode materials.

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries have attracted enormous attentions as new-generation energy storage devices due to their high theoretical energy density , high theoretical specific capacity, low cost and environmental friendliness. However, polysulfide shuttle and the growth of lithium dendrites significantly restrain the practical application of the Li-S batteries. In this work, a modified PP separator with nanoscale rod-like α-MnO 2 supported on carbon nanotubes was prepared. The α-MnO 2 @CNT modified separator can effectively inhibit the shuttle of polysulfide , enhance the electrochemical activity and accelerate the transfer of ions and electrons. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate that α-MnO 2 @CNT can efficiently adsorb and catalyze the conversion of polysulfides. Due to these advantages, the α-MnO 2 @CNT-based Li-S battery delivers a initial discharge capacity of 1469 mAh g −1 at 0.05 C, 1039 mAh g −1 at 0.5 C and the capacity can still maintain 648 mAh g −1 over 500 cycles at 0.5 C (capacity decay rate of 0.075%). Expressly, the capacity decay rate is only 0.022% after 600 cycles at a high current density of 2 C. The excellent performance could be attributed to the α-MnO 2 @CNT modified separator not only accelerating the transmission of electrons but also effectively inhibiting the shuttle of polysulfides. Moreover, this work provides a better idea for practical applications of lithium-sulfur batteries in the future.

The polysulfide shuttle and uncontrollable growth of lithium dendrites are the two fatal troubles that obstruct the practical process of lithium-sulfur batteries. Herein, a composite membrane consisting of metal-organic framework (MOF) Ce-based UiO-67 and glass fiber membrane (UiO-67-GF) is proposed as a dual-functional separator for these issues. On the one hand, the introduced Ce-UiO-67 crystals are capable of efficaciously adsorbing polysulfides and catalyzing their conversion, thereby restraining their shuttle. On the other hand, this MOF provides sufficient lithium-philic functional groups for ensuring the rapid and homogeneous transport of Li ions , and thus a stable Li plating and stripping process can be acquired. Consequently, this MOF-based separator is qualified for simultaneously resolving the challenges of polysulfide shuttle and Li dendrite. The battery with the proposed separator delivers an initial capacity of 919 mAh g −1 and a limited decay rate of merely 0.04% per cycle for 500 cycles at 1 C. Moreover, even under a lean-electrolyte condition, a high area capacity of 6.0 mAh cm −2 is still obtained under the increased sulfur loading of 7.0 mg cm −2 .

Lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries have been considered as one of the most promising electrochemical energy storage systems because of their high energy density. However, a series of issues severely limit the practical performances of Li–S batteries such as low conductivity, significant volume change, and shuttle effect. The hollow carbon spheres with huge voids and high electrical conductivity are promising as sulfur hosts. Unfortunately, the nonpolar nature of carbon materials cannot prevent the shuttle effect effectively. In this case, the atomic cobalt is introduced to a nitrogen-doped hollow carbon sphere (ACo@HCS) through polymerization and controlled pyrolysis. The atomic cobalt dopants not only act as active sites to restrict the shuttle effect, but also can promote the kinetics of the sulfur redox reactions. ACo@HCS acting as sulfur host exhibits a high discharge capacity (1003 mAh g −1 ) at a 1.0 C rate after 500 cycles, and the corresponding decay rate is as low as 0.002% per cycle. This exciting work paves a new way to design high-performance Li–S batteries.

Hollow carbon spheres or core–sheath porous carbon spheres have been widely used in the S cathode of lithium–sulfur batteries. However, the sphere shells or the pore walls may block the free transport of active species to a certain extent and may have a negative influence on the effective accommodation of elemental sulfur. Herein, solid but porous carbon spheres (PNCS) with large porosity and high specific surface area are developed, which enable high sulfur loading and ample cathode/electrolyte contact area, and the interconnected open pore channels significantly shorten the ion/electron transport pathways. Together with high-conducting nitrogen-doped graphene (NG), facilitated polysulfide conversion kinetics is realized in the as-assembled Li–S batteries, which deliver a high initial discharge capacity of 1445 mAh g–1 at 0.2 C, excellent rate capability of 872 mAh g–1 at 4 C, and low capacity decay of 0.047% per cycle for 500 cycles at 1 C. Even under high sulfur loading of 5.5 mg cm–2 and low electrolyte/sulfur (E/S) ratio of 5 μL mg–1, the Li–S batteries still display high specific capacities of 896 mAh g–1 and 4.96 mAh cm–2. The real application of PNCS/NG is also demonstrated by the corresponding Li–S pouch cells showing high discharging capacity and stable open circuit voltage. This work exhibits the promising application of the solid carbon spheres as the S host for effectively addressing the polysulfide shuttle and propelling the development of high-performance Li–S batteries.

Lithium–sulfur (Li-S) batteries are deemed to be one of the most promising energy storage devices due to their abundant material sources and high energy density. However, the uncontrollable growth of Li dendrites and the shuttle effect severely deteriorate the cycling performances, and consequently, hamper their practical application. In this research, a cation-selective dual-functional separator was designed by coating a thin layer containing sulfonated polyether ether ketone (SPEEK) polymer and Super P (SP) particles on a commercial polyethylene (PE) separator. Here, SPEEK can offer lithium-ion transport channels and inhibit polysulfide anions through a Coulomb action. SP with excellent electronic conductivity and a relatively large specific surface area can achieve physical adsorption to polysulfide anions and can act as an additional collector to promote electron transport, so as to achieve better electrochemical exploitation of sulfur and ensure the reactivation of captured active substances. The composite separators can adjust the deposition of Li to a certain extent, therefore achieving uniform lithium-ion flux and lithium-ion deposition. As expected, the SP/SPEEK-coated separator batteries show an outstanding Coulomb efficiency of 99% and a superior capacity of 950.7 mA h g–1, and the capacity retention rate was 77.5% after 500 cycles at 0.5 C. This work provides an effective strategy to suppress the shuttle effect in Li–S batteries.

Lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries are regarded as promising secondary energy storage devices for their high energy density and low cost. The electrochemical performance of Li–S batteries is mainly determined by the efficient and reversible conversion of lithium-polysulfides to Li2S when discharging and to S when charging. Herein, a catalytic strategy is proposed to accelerate the reversible conversion of S and the discharge products in Li–S batteries. This reversible transformation is achieved with active sites of single-atom iron on nitrogen- and sulfur-doped porous carbon (FeNSC). We prove that the synergy between atomically dispersed iron and doped sulfur accelerates the reversible electrochemical conversion reactions in Li–S batteries. The FeNSC/S hybrid cathode exhibits superior long-term cycling stability even at a high current density of 1C, with only 0.047% capacity decay per cycle over 1000 cycles. This study demonstrates a novel method for improving the conversion of polysulfides based on electrocatalysis strategies to ultimately obtain high-performance Li–S batteries.

Charge recombination losses are primarily responsible for the modest photovoltaic performance of quantum dot sensitized solar cells (QDSCs). Charge recombination occurring at the photoanode/electrolyte interface contributes significant energy loss in QDSC devices. Herein, a facile method to reduce the recombination loss by modifying the polysulfide electrolyte with the addition of poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) as an efficient and general additive was introduced. It was found that the PVP modified polysulfide electrolyte could significantly improve the photovoltaic performance of QDSCs, especially the open-circuit voltage and fill factor. In addition, the PVP modified electrolyte is widely applicable to various QD sensitizer based systems. Impedance spectroscopy and open circuit voltage decay (OCVD) measurements reveal that the charge recombination processes occurring at the TiO2/QDs/electrolyte interfaces were remarkably inhibited using the PVP modified electrolyte. The average power conversion efficiency (PCE) was improved remarkably by 9% and a champion PCE of 9.77% was obtained with 20 wt% PVP in the polysulfide electrolyte for CdSexTe1−x based QDSCs. Moreover, the stability of the constructed QDSCs was also improved by employing the PVP modified polysulfide electrolyte.

Lithium–sulfur (Li–S) battery systems are universally recognized as frontrunners in next-generation energy storage owing to their energy densities exceeding 2600 Wh kg–1. Nevertheless, their practical implementation remains constrained by severe Li metal anode degradation caused by polysulfide shuttle mediated corrosion, which drastically decreases achievable energy densities. This work pioneers an innovative interfacial engineering strategy leveraging transition metal ion synergies to fundamentally address this challenge. Through chemically induced anion modulation, nickel species spontaneously reconfigure into a protective solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) at Li surfaces. This engineered inorganic-dominant architecture demonstrates dual functionality that effectively passivates polysulfide-induced electrochemical corrosion and dramatically curtails electrolyte decomposition kinetics. Remarkably, even in LiNO3-free configurations, the optimized system achieves exceptional cycling stability (76.4% capacity retention). These findings establish a paradigm-shifting framework for developing practically viable high energy density Li–S systems through a rational interface design.

Conductive supports could improve the electrical conductivity of the electrode in lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries but suffer from the shuttle effect originated from the polysulfide dissolution, while the hydrophilic metal oxides could avoid the shuttle effect but with poor conductivity. Herein, a facile approach was developed to fabricate hierarchically porous tin oxide (SnO2) nanoparticle-anchored tubular polypyrrole (T-PPy) as a sulfur host, in order to integrate the advantages of conductive supports and metal oxides but overcome their shortcomings. In the unique structure, the T-PPy nanotubes acted as a conductive network to not only improve the electrical conductivity of cathodes but also accommodate the volume expansion of the sulfur cathode during cycling as well as relatively confine the polysulfide diffusion, while the SnO2 nanoparticles served as a high-efficient polysulfide trap to mitigate the shuttle effect due to the chemical bond between SnO2 and polysulfides. Moreover, the hierarchically porous structure and therefore large surface area of the proposed S/(T-PPy)@SnO2 cathode were favorable for the accommodation of sulfur and lithium sulfides. Consequently, S/(T-PPy)@SnO2 with 64.7% sulfur mass content exhibited excellent cyclic stability with a decay rate of only 0.05% per cycle along with 500 cycles at 1 C, rate capability of 383.7 mA h/g at 5 C, and Coulombic efficiency above 90%, outstanding among most of the reported PPy-based sulfur cathodes and PPy-based ternary sulfur cathodes.

Low sulfur content and inevitable polysulfide shuttle effect have always been the critical obstacle of the practical application of high-energy–density lithium sulfur batteries. Herein, a waste passiflora edulis peel derived in-situ N -doping porous carbon (PINPC) combined with three-dimensional hollow carbon cloth interlayer (3DHCI) was designed and constructed by facile simultaneous activation/carbonization. The abundant porous structure and nitrogen heteroatom doping of the PINPC not only significantly confine the soluble polysulfides through the physical and chemical adsorption, but also the high conductivity of the 3DHCI effectively accelerate the conversion reaction of polysulfides encapsulated in the unique hollow carbon skeletons. Owing to the synergetic enhancement of the PINPC and 3DHCI, the sulfur contents of the corresponding sulfur cathode composites are easily regulated from 70 wt% to 95 wt%, whilst exhibiting excellent electrochemical performances. The PINPC/S with a sulfur content of 70 wt% and 3DHCI interlayer obtains a high initial discharge capacity of 1032 mAh·g −1 and then retains 954 mAh·g −1 at 0.2 C after 200 cycles. At 2 C, a durable cycle life with capacity retention of 86% can be achieved up to 500 cycles. Even with an ultrahigh sulfur content of 95 wt%, the relatively high initial discharge capacity of 692 mAh·g −1 and capacity retention of 96 % are also achieved at 0.2 C after 200 cycles. This work offers a potential design for high-performance lithium sulfur batteries simultaneously with a high sulfur content.
