Antibiotic resistance proliferation has underscored the urgent need for advanced strategies to treat antibiotic-containing wastewater. This study developed a novel CoFe 2 O 4 -encapsulated carbon nanotube composite (CoFe 2 O 4 @CNT) via a modified impregnation–sintering method for the efficient activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to antibiotic degradation. The CoFe 2 O 4 @CNT/PMS system achieved 95.3% degradation of florfenicol (FLO) within 30 min under optimal operational conditions (pH 7, 5% metal loading, 0.5 mM PMS, 87.5 mg/L catalyst). Quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy identified hydroxyl radicals (•OH), sulfate radicals (SO 4 •− ), superoxide anions (O 2 •− ), and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) as the primary reactive species responsible for FLO degradation. To enable continuous-flow operation, the catalyst was further immobilized onto a ceramic membrane (designated as CF@CNTCM) via vacuum filtration. The CF@CNTCM/PMS system demonstrated maintained high FLO removal efficiency with negligible cobalt leaching, significantly surpassing conventional cobalt-based catalysts. Furthermore, the system exhibited robust performance in real water matrices, including river water and aquaculture wastewater, effectively reducing chemical oxygen demand and dissolved organic matter. This work presents a sustainable and highly efficient strategy for antibiotic degradation through catalytic ceramic membrane technology, with substantial potential for practical applications in water treatment.

Bi 3+ doping enhances the singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) lifetime. • Oxygen vacancy-rich Bi-Co 3 O 4 catalyst. • Under irradiation, Bi-Co 3 O 4 can efficiently degrade toluene and sterilize bacteria. • Bi-Co 3 O 4 exhibits efficient antibacterial activity, providing new insights for practical indoor air purification Developing efficient materials with excellent adsorption properties and photoactivity is pivotal for photocatalytic abatement of VOCs and bacteria in the air. Herein, Bi 3+ -doped Co 3 O 4 (Bi-Co 3 O 4 ) photocatalysts were successfully synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal-calcination method. Incorporation of Bi 3+ ions induces lattice distortion in Co 3 O 4 , generating oxygen vacancies (OVs), which subsequently modulates the electronic structure of Co 3 O 4 and produces singlet oxygen species ( 1 O 2 ) with a lifetime of 30 min. The Bi-Co 3 O 4 , with a geometric area of 24 cm 2 , achieves complete degradation (100%) of 50 ppm toluene within 30 min and a high mineralization rate of 93.4%. It retains outstanding photocatalytic activity even after multiple usage cycles. Notably, high-reactivity oxygen species at the Bi-Co 3 O 4 interface can effectively eliminate Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ). This work offers theoretical insights for the design of stable and efficient photocatalysts aimed at improving indoor air quality. The high cobalt leaching of cobalt-based catalysts during the activation of PMS is one of the bottlenecks in SR-AOPs. Herein, a series of trace cobalt confined in carbon shell catalysts (HDCo@C-X) with well-defined structures were designed using NH 2 -SiO 2 nanospheres as a template via the surface-grafting−anchoring method, which was the innovation of the catalysts. AO7 removal rates were in an order of HDCo@C-700 (100%) ≈ HDCo@C-800 (100%) > HDCo@C-600 (80.4%) > Co/C-700 (43.8%). The apparent rate constant of AO7 in HDCo@C-700/PMS (0.0691 min −1 ) was 8.03 times higher than that of Co/C-700/PMS (0.0086 min −1 ). The synergistic index ( SI ) value was introduced to characterize the synergistic relationship between the active sites and confined structures of the catalyst. The SI value of HDCo@C-700/PMS system was 5.2, indicative of a strong synergistic effect between active sites and confined structures. The activation mechanism of HDCo@C-700 for PMS coexisted with free-radical (SO 4 •− , •OH, and O 2 •- ) and non-radical ( 1 O 2 and electron transfer) pathways, and both O 2 •- and 1 O 2 played a major role in AO7 degradation. The catalytic activity of HDCo@C-700 gradually decreased to 39.6% and 27.0% for the 2nd and 3rd reuse, respectively, mainly ascribed to the surface oxidation of the carbon shell and the ultra-trace leaching of Co ions. Finally, the intermediates of AO7 in the HDCo@C-700/PMS system were detected by LC-MS, and a possible degradation path was proposed. The in silico toxicity predictions suggested the non-overlooked transformation-derived risks from the degradation products of AO7. This study provides a new insight into the design of PMS activators.

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) degradation by peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation through •OH and SO 4 •– radical oxidation process was the effective technology in the last decades; however, there were few research focusing on removing PCBs by O 2 •– and 1 O 2 induced by PMS activation. In this work, 90.86% of 2,4,4-trichlorodiphenyl (PCB 28) was degraded by 0.3 g/L Fe 3 C@Fe-800 activated 0.5 mM PMS system under the synergistic action of O 2 •– and 1 O 2 . The structures of Fe 3 C@Fe-800 were identified by Scanning electron microscope (SEM), High resolution-transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), Raman spectra and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements and quenching tests verified that O 2 •– and 1 O 2 were the primary reactive species in Fe 3 C@Fe-800/PMS/PCB 28 ternary reaction system. Density functional theory (DFT), Linear sweep voltammetry (LSV), and chronoamperometry test revealed that electron-deficient Fe atoms on Fe 3 C were the main active sites in Fe 3 C@Fe-800 for PMS activation to generate 1 O 2 . Unlike the reported •OH and SO 4 •– mediated degradation induced by the iron-based catalyst, both O 2 •– and 1 O 2 contributed to PCB 28 degradation: nucleophilic dichlorination reaction by O 2 •- and then ring-open oxidation process by 1 O 2 . Fe 3 C@Fe-800/PMS system had excellent catalytic performance under different reaction conditions and possessed desirable inorganic salt and natural organic matter resistance. This work elucidated the important role of Fe 3 C in PMS activation to generate O 2 •- and 1 O 2 for PCB 28 decontamination by nonradical way and provided a clue to design rationally catalysts in polychlorinated biphenyl pollution remediation.

Antibiotic contamination of aquatic ecosystems has attracted growing concern over the past few years. As a novel and low-cost catalytic membrane, attapulgite-based ceramic membrane (ATPCM) impregnated with Co 3 O 4 (Co-ATPCM) was successfully prepared for the degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) under peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. The physical and chemical properties of ATPCM and Co-ATPCM were characterized by SEM-EDS, XRD, XPS, zeta potential, contact angle and the three-point bending test. Co was stably anchored on ATPCM via X-O-Co (X denotes Al, Si or Mg) bonds during the catalytic process, avoiding Co leaching. Approximately 70 % SMX could be removed by the optimized Co-ATPCM in batch experiments over a wide pH range from 4.0 to 10.0. Furthermore, 58 % SMX degradation was observed during filtration experiments with a high water flux of up to 774 L m −2 h −1 (LMH). According to the quenching experiment and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, SO 4 − , OH and 1 O 2 were involved in the SMX degradation process, while 1 O 2 played a dominant role. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation successfully predicted that the sits on SMX molecules with high Fukui index were more susceptible to attacks by free radicals, confirmed by liquid chromatography-Quadrupole-time of flight mass spectrometer (LC-MS). Consequently, a possible pathway for the catalytic oxidation process was proposed based on the results of DFT and LC-MS. This study provided a promising strategy using natural magnesium aluminum silicate clay minerals to prepare cost-effective, efficient, and eco-friendly catalytic membranes for wastewater treatment.

Photocatlytic water disinfection for pathengenic miroorgasnisms removal is of great importance to public health safety, however the photocataltyic performance is unsatisfactory due to the low reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. In this work, an innovative energy-transfer-mediated oxygen activation system on PCN-224-Zn is proposed for selective singlet oxygen generation without the need of electron-hole separation. The as-prepared PCN-224-Zn exhibits remarkable singlet triggered photocatalytic E-coli inactivation and organic pollutant degradation performance. The enhanced photocatalytic activity is attributed to the introduction of Zn into the metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) that facilitates the transformation of electron-hole couple from singlet to triplet state for selective singlet oxygen generation with high efficiency. This work provides a new oxygen activation pathway for efficient and selective ROS generation without the need of electron-hole separation.

Excess generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) based on sensitizers under ultrasound (US) excitation can cause the death of tumor cells via oxidative damage, but sonosensitizers are largely unexplored. Herein, oxygen-deficient black BiOCl (B-BiOCl) nanoplates (NPs) are reported, with post-treatment on conventional BiOCl by simple UV excitation, showing stronger singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) generation than commercial TiO 2 nanoparticles and their derivatives under US irradiation. Moreover, L-buthionine-sulfoximine (BSO), a GSH biosynthesis inhibitor, is incorporated into B-BiOCl NPs. The authors find that BSO can be released owing to the degradation of B-BiOCl NPs in the presence of acid and GSH, which are overexpressed in tumors. The results show that BSO/B-BiOCl-PEG NPs have a multifunctional synergistic effect on improving ROS production. In particular, BiOCl has remarkable near-infrared light absorption after UV treatment and is good for photoacoustic imaging that can guide subsequent sonodynamic therapy. This work shows that just with a simple oxygen deficiency treatment, strong 1 O 2 generation can be provided to a conventional material under US irradiation and, interestingly, this effect can be amplified by using a small inhibitor BSO, and this is clearly demonstrated in cell and mice experiments.

pH-dependent efficiency of singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) generation by fulvic acids (FAs) from different sources was estimated by time-resolved luminescence technique. All FAs turn up the highest quantum yields of 1 O 2 for neutral and alkali solutions [ ϕ 532 ( 1 O 2 )] = (0.3•2.5)í10 •2 ] and 3•5-fold decrease in ϕ 532 ( 1 O 2 ) for acidic solutions. Potential of FA ChangSheng (the best 1 O 2 generating agent among investigated FAs) in relation to photodegradation of non-UVA-absorbing herbicide Amitrole (3-amino-1,2,4-triazole) was demonstrated.

The introduction of a thick shell structure has been widely used to enhance the emission intensity of upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs). However, a thick shell could increase the distance between UCNPs and photosensitizers, which is not favourable to the generation of singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) in photodynamic therapy (PDT) due to the low fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) efficiency. In this study, we used a facile method to prepare UCNPs that the emission intensity could increase with the shell thickness decreasing, which facilitated the efficient FRET between UCNPs and photosensitizers. In detail, the Nd 3+ -doped UCNPs with different dopant concentration of Yb 3+ were prepared and characterized firstly. The I r/g (intensity of red luminescence to green luminescence) was tuned to increase largely by precisely controlling Yb 3+ concentration in core-shell, which could make UCNPs effectively activate methylene blue (MB). Then, a unique procedure was used to prepare NaYF 4 :Yb/Er/Nd@NaYF 4 :Nd (Yb 3+ :30%) core-shell nanoparticles with different shell thickness by tuning the amount of the core. The upconversion luminescence (UCL) intensity of those UCNPs enhanced dramatically with the shell thickness decreasing. Furthermore, UCNPs and MB were encapsulated into SiO 2 nanoparticles. FRET efficiency between UCNPs and MB largely increased with the shell thickness of UCNPs decreasing. Correspondingly, the efficiency of 1 O 2 generation obviously increased. We provided a new method to optimize the UCL intensity and FRET efficiency at the same time to produce 1 O 2 efficiently.

Singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) is an electrophilic species that has great selectivity for breaking down electron-rich refractory organic pollutants. However, in most cases, 1 O 2 plays a minor role in the Fenton-like process due to its low yield, the contributions of which are usually covered by free radicals. Here, we provide the first report on a type of hollow amorphous Co/C composites prepared for the efficient generation of 1 O 2 to degrade oxytetracycline (OTC) selectively in the Fenton-like system. The optimized Co/C samples (Co/C-3) obtained the best degradation performance of OTC near to 100% under neutral conditions, along with satisfactory reusability and stability. Additionally, it exhibited a high anti-interference capacity for inorganic anions and natural organic matter s in the different water qualities. XPS spectrum revealed that the electron cycle of ≡Co 2+ -O-C/H and ≡Co 3+ -O-C/H played a vital effect on the formation of 1 O 2 . Quenching experiments and EPR testing further verified that 1 O 2 converted from ·O 2 – was the dominant oxidative species, and no hydroxyl radical (·OH) appeared in this reaction. Moreover, the results of the Fukui function and T.E.S.T (Toxicity Estimation Software Tool) analysis provided significant assistance in the exploration of degradation pathways and ecological risks of OTC and its intermediates.

In this work, a carbon and cobalt co-doped carbon nitride (Co 0.04 -CCN 0.25 ) catalyst was synthesized for superior generation of singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) via peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. The findings indicate that carbon self-doping not only reduces the interfacial charge transfer resistance but also constructs efficient electron transfer channels between g-C 3 N 4 support and cobalt active sites. This directional electron transfer increases the electron density of cobalt species, which can accelerate the Co(II)/Co(III) redox cycle. As a result, the optimized Co 0.04 -CCN 0.25 catalyst achieves 100% of bisphenol A (BPA) degradation within 6 min under ambient conditions. Mechanistic investigations reveal that the singlet oxygen is the dominant reactive oxygen species (ROS) at the Co active site in the Co 0.04 -CCN 0.25 , which presents a desirable and recyclable redox pair of Co(II)/Co(III). Furthermore, the modified catalyst exhibits excellent pH tolerance over a broad range and strong anti-interference ability against co-existing anions and humic acid in aqueous solutions. Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) analysis and ecotoxicity assessment further demonstrate that the toxicities of BPA degradation intermediates are significantly reduced during the oxidation process. Therefore, this study provides a promising and practical strategy for designing high-efficient C 3 N 4 -based catalyst of PMS activation. The escalating global energy crisis and environmental pollution has drawn increasing attention. As a green and sustainable alternative, photocatalytic H 2 O 2 synthesis has attracted widespread interest. In this study, we has designed a novel exciton-regulated photocatalyst (Bi@g-C 3 N 4 /ST-NS) by integrating bismuth-doped graphitic carbon nitride with porphyrin-based supramolecular nanostructures (ST-NS). The composite was synthesized through a sequential process involving solvothermal reaction, high-temperature calcination, and solution-phase self-assembly. We systematically investigated its crystal structure, photoelectronic properties, and the mechanistic basis of photocatalytic H 2 O 2 production. Characterization results confirmed the successful incorporation of Bi single atoms into the sixfold cavities of g-C 3 N 4 , forming a p-n heterojunction with ST-NS while preserving the crystallinity of the host matrix. The built-in interfacial electric field not only promoted efficient charge separation but also extended the visible-light absorption range and prolonged the carrier lifetime. Performance evaluations revealed that Bi@g-C 3 N 4 /ST-NS exhibited significantly enhanced H 2 O 2 generation activity compared to pristine Bi@g-C 3 N 4 , with optimal performance achieved at a 10:1 mass ratio. Under visible-light irradiation, the H 2 O 2 concentration reached 1134 μM in the reaction solution, representing a 2.5-fold improvement over Bi@g-C 3 N 4 . Mechanistic studies indicated that the heterojunction facilitated efficient intersystem crossing from singlet to triplet excitons. Rather than following the conventional superoxide radical (·O 2 - ) pathway, these triplet excitons activated ground-state oxygen to generate singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) via resonance energy transfer. The subsequent highly selective two-electron reduction of 1 O 2 yielded H 2 O 2 , effectively circumventing the high-energy barrier steps associated with traditional pathways. This work thus presented a promising strategy for the rational design of high-efficiency photocatalytic systems through exciton regulation.
