Based on a hydroxyl-terminated hyperbranched polyimide (HBPIBPADA-TAP(OH)), two series of hybrid ternary composites composed of a linear polyimide (PI6FDA-APB), HBPIBPADA-TAP(OH) (10% and 20%), and various concentrations of SiO2 were fabricated by sol–gel method. Research showed that properties of the composites are closely related with the ratio of HBPIBPADA-TAP(OH) to SiO2, which can be optimized by proper choice of the compositions. Under optimized conditions, the hybrid ternary composites show properties complementary to the drawbacks of unary or binary systems. The dielectric constant (Dk) of the PI6FDA-APB_HBPIBPADA-TAP(OH)-10%_SiO2-10% composite reaches the lowest value of 2.26. The silica loading and reinforcement binding with PI6FDA-APB_HBPIBPADA-TAP(OH) matrix are confirmed by the SEM morphology of the hybrid ternary composite films. When a suitable amount (20%) of HBPIBPADA-TAP(OH) is added into the PI6FDA-APB_SiO2-10% composite, the optical transmittance is significantly improved to be 63% at the wavelength of 450 nm. With increase in the content of SiO2, the thermal expansion is obviously reduced. For the PI6FDA-APB_HBPIBPADA-TAP(OH)-10%_SiO2-30% composite, the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of the film is reduced to 15.9 ppm °C−1 compared to 37.1 ppm °C−1 for the PI6FDA-APB film (reducing about 59%). Due to these optimized properties, hybrid ternary composite films are expected to have potential applications in micro-electronic insulator fields such as interlayer dielectric of advanced electronic devices.

A facile process was developed for the synthesis of FeSe–Pt@SiO2 nanospheres based on the hydrothermal treatment of FeCl3·6H2O, selenium and NaBH4 in ethanolamine solvent, followed by reducing HPtCl4 with NaBH4 in the presence of FeSe particles to obtain FeSe coated with Pt NPs (FeSe–Pt), ending with a surfactant assembled sol–gel process to obtain FeSe–Pt@SiO2. The morphology and composition of FeSe–Pt@SiO2 were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, high resolution TEM, X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Structural analyses revealed that FeSe–Pt@SiO2 nanospheres were of regular spherical shape with smooth surfaces due to the SiO2 shells, compared with FeSe particles with 150 nm lateral diameter. The prepared FeSe–Pt@SiO2 nanospheres possessed both intrinsic glucose oxidase (GOx-) and peroxidase-mimic activities, and we engineered an artificial enzymatic cascade system with high activity and stability based on this nanostructure. The good catalytic performance of the composites could be attributed to the synergy between the functions of FeSe particles and Pt NPs. Significantly, the FeSe–Pt@SiO2 nanospheres as robust nanoreactors can catalyze a self-organized cascade reaction, which includes oxidation of glucose by oxygen to yield gluconic acid and H2O2, and then oxidation of 3,3,5,5-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) by H2O2 to produce a colour change. Colorimetric detection of H2O2 and glucose using the FeSe–Pt@SiO2 nanospheres was conducted with high detection sensitivities, 0.227 nM and 1.136 nM, respectively, demonstrating the feasibility of practical sensing applications. It is therefore believed that our findings in this study could open up the possibility of utilizing FeSe–Pt@SiO2 nanospheres as enzymatic mimics in diagnostic and biotechnology fields.

In this work, we fabricated a new type of Pd/SiO2@ZIF-8 core–shell catalyst composed of a Pd/SiO2 microsphere as the core and a ZIF-8 membrane as the shell. The preparation procedure involves first loading Pd nanoparticles onto nonporous SiO2 microspheres to obtain the Pd/SiO2 core and then coating a perfect layer of ZIF-8 shell on the core by electrostatic induction to form a Pd/SiO2@ZIF-8 core–shell structure. It is crucial that the modification of the Pd/SiO2 core with polyelectrolyte was employed to improve the charge distribution of the core surface and preferably adsorb Zn2+ cations in the synthesis solution so as to assist the formation of a continuous ZIF-8 shell. The compactness and thickness of the shell were optimized by increasing the number of cycles of ZIF-8 growth. The hydrogenations of alkenes with different molecular sizes showed that the Pd/SiO2@ZIF-8 catalysts can provide excellent product selectivity and antipoisoning and antileaching properties for the hydrogenations of alkenes.

SiO 2 @N-Halamine/polyethersulfone (PES) ultrafiltration membranes were prepared by phase inversion method. The morphology, hydrophilicity , permeation performance, porosity, antifouling and antibacterial properties of the membrane were investigated. FT-IR spectra, TEM and XPS spectra results showed that SiO 2 nanoparticles were prepared and modified successfully. SEM images indicated that the cross-section morphology of membrane was influenced by the introduction of SiO 2 @N-Halamine. The surface hydrophilicity of membranes was significantly improved after adding SiO 2 @N-Halamine. The filtration results indicated that the permeation properties of the hybrid membranes were significantly superior to the pure PES membrane. The water flux of the hybrid membranes increased with the additional amount of SiO 2 @N-Halamine increased, when the SiO 2 @N-Halamine content was 5%, the water flux of the membranes reached the maximum at 384.4 L·m − 2 ·h − 1 . Moreover, the hybrid membranes showed good antifouling and antibacterial properties, which might expand the usage of PES in water treatment and also could make some potential contributions to membrane antifouling.

Core–shell structured Fe-6.5 wt% Si/SiO2 particles and intergranular insulated Fe-6.5 wt% Si/SiO2 composite compacts with tunable insulating layer thickness were prepared by in situ chemical deposition combined with a subsequent spark plasma sintering process. Most of conductive Fe-6.5 wt% Si alloy particles were coated with a SiO2 insulating layer in the Fe-6.5 wt% Si/SiO2 composite compacts. The SiO2 insulating layer could increase the electrical resistivity and reduce the effective radius of the eddy current in Fe-6.5 wt% Si/SiO2 composite compacts. Therefore, the intergranular insulated Fe-6.5 wt% Si/SiO2 composite compacts presented lower core loss than those of Fe-6.5 wt% Si compacts without SiO2 insulating layer. Based on this, several types of Fe-6.5 wt% Si/SiO2 core–shell particles and intergranular insulated Fe-6.5 wt% Si/SiO2 composite compacts (with various SiO2 insulating layer thicknesses) were selectively prepared by simply varying the TEOS concentration (the volume of TEOS for each gram of Fe-6.5 wt% Si particles, ml g−1). The results indicated that the thickness of the SiO2 layer and electrical resistivity of Fe-6.5 wt% Si/SiO2 composite compacts increased with increasing the TEOS concentration from 0.1 to 0.4 ml g−1, while saturation magnetization, relative permeability and core loss displayed the reverse tendencies. The as-prepared intergranular insulated Fe-6.5 wt% Si/SiO2 composite compacts exhibited excellent magnetic properties, which inspire us to develop new high silicon containing soft magnetic cores which can be widely used in various electromagnetic devices.

Twenty molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of molecular imprinting prepolymerization systems had been performed to optimize the imprinting shell of the fluorescent sensor. The results revealed that the system with a Bisphenol A (BPA): 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES): tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) mole ratio of 10:15:60 had the most stable template (T)-functional monomer (FM) cluster. Correspondingly, five kinds of imprinted and non-imprinted polymers were synthesized to assess the reliability and validity of the simulation results. Hybrid SiO 2 -coated CdTe NCs (HS-QD) were synthesized by a simple reflux procedure including a sol-gel reaction that resulted in the formation of a hybrid SiO 2 layer with CdS-like clusters on a CdTe core. Based on the optimal component ratio of the prepolymerization system, MIP shells were anchored on the surface of HS-QD to build a fluorescent MIP sensor. A linear relationship between relative fluorescence intensity and the concentration of BPA had been obtained covering the concentration range of 0.05–10 μmol L −1 with a limit of detection of 6 nmol L −1 . The feasibility of the fluorescent sensor was successfully evaluated through the analysis of BPA in river water and milk. The recoveries are above 96.31%, and the relative standard deviation (RSD) ranged from 1.55% to 2.78%.

ABSTRCTComposite materials show more superior performance compared with the single-component materials. Core-shell material as a new composite material are more and more widely used. TiO2@SiO2 core-shell microspheres belong to inorganic core-shell microspheres, compared with other types of core-shell material, the inorganic core-shell microspheres have advantage of controlled size, structural stability, easy surface modification, and so on. In the present paper, we demonstrated the synthesis of novel monodisperse core-shell microspheres with a TiO2 shell using a convenient process. Due to owning core-shell structures with TiO2 surface, the obtained TiO2@SiO2 microspheres can be used as photocatalysts.

Novel luminescent one-dimensional Ln 3+ (Eu, Tb) doped SiO 2 hollow nanofibers were successfully fabricated using a facile and economical co-axial electrospinning technique with subsequent calcination . The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed that the as-obtained samples present obvious hollow morphology with an average diameter of 303 ± 11 nm and thin walls approximate 76 nm. For SiO 2 :xEu 3+ hollow nanofibers, the highest luminescence intensity, the longest lifetime and the largest quantum efficiency were both in the composition of 6 mol% Eu 3+ . The large value of R 21 indicated a highly disordered environment around Eu 3+ ions in the host, which was better for intense visible red emission. Meanwhile, the spectral characteristics and radiative properties were also analyzed according to the Judd-Ofelt theory from the emission spectra. What's more, under ultraviolet excitation, the emission colors of samples could be tuned from red to green, including bisque by doping Eu 3+ , Tb 3+ and co-doping Eu 3+ /Tb 3+ ions, which indicated the obtained SiO 2 :Ln 3+ hollow nanofibers are potential phosphors in nanostructured optical devices applications.

Fogging on transparent substrate greatly impacts transmittance, causing inconvenience and potential hazards. Increasing surface roughness to enhance hydrophilicity often reduces transmittance. Here, by enhancing the Marangoni flow to inhibit the coffee-ring effect during SiO 2 droplet drying, we propose for the first time to manufacture superhydrophilic and high-transmittance coatings with porous structures on various substrates, including glass and resin. This approach relies on a simple, potentially large-scale ultrasonic spray method to enhance the Marangoni flow of SiO 2 dispersion with different particle sizes by adding multiple surfactants to reduce the surface tension of the dispersion. The water contact angle of the SiO 2 film decreases to below 5° within 0.5 s, imparting anti-fogging properties to the substrate. The film exhibits a transmittance of 93.1% at 580 nm, surpassing the inherent 90.8% transmittance of the bare glass. Notably, the film shows remarkable self-cleaning properties due to potent hydration from eco-friendly SiO 2 nanoparticles and the porous structure. Owing to the hydrogen bonding between tightly packed small-sized SiO 2 particles as well as between the particles and substrate, the surface morphology of the film on glass remains intact even after washing, and soaking. The porous SiO 2 film, with a contact angle dropping to below 5° within 0.5 s, maintains its superhydrophilicity even after being exposed to high temperatures, UV irradiation, and humidity conditions. The simple production process of the porous SiO 2 films offers a promising method for preparing high-transmittance anti-fogging films with significant industrial potential.

Silicon nitride (Si₃N₄) ceramics exhibit excellent mechanical properties and biocompatibility, making them highly suitable for biomedical applications, particularly in implants. In this study, the mechanical properties and bioactivity of Si₃N₄ ceramics with varying amounts of Y₂O₃-Al₂O₃-SiO₂ sintering aids were investigated. Increasing the sintering additive content from 4 wt% to 8 wt% substantially improved the bulk density of the ceramics, leading to notable enhancements in mechanical properties. These included a Vickers hardness increase to 10.07 GPa, a flexural strength increase to 605 MPa, and a fracture toughness increase to 2.43 MPa m 1/2 . The optimal combination of mechanical properties was achieved with 8 wt% sintering additives due to the higher aspect ratio and lower porosity. After immersion in simulated body fluid (SBF), the surface of the Si₃N₄ ceramics was coated with a Ca and P-rich layer, morphologically similar to hydroxyapatite. The layer formation was facilitated by the presence of SiO₂, which promoted hydroxyapatite nucleation and growth, as well as the rapid release of Ca 2 ⁺ ions and the sustained stability of the apatite layer.

The fabrication of superhydrophobic fabrics has gained significant interest for their potential in applications like oil/water separation, yet conventional methods often involve fluorine-based materials, raising environmental concerns. Herein, we introduce a fluorine-free strategy for creating superhydrophobic fabrics by coating nano flower-like SiO2 (NFS). These nanostructured-SiO2 synthesized via a facile and controllable hydrothermal method, were functionalized with thiol groups (-SH) to enhance bonding using (3-Mercaptopropyl)trimethoxysilane (MPTMS). The MPTMS modified NFS (MNFS) were applied to cotton fabrics pretreated with cross-linking agents and low-surface tension polymers, followed by UV curing to ensure robust adhesion. The resulting fabric demonstrated superior superhydrophobicity with a water contact angle of 168.6°, along with excellent separation efficiency of 96.2% for water-in-oil emulsions and significant flux rates of 35.61×103 L m-2 h-1 for oil/water mixtures. Moreover, the fabric exhibited notable resistance to UV radiation, chemical exposure, and mechanical washing. This fluorine-free approach to superhydrophobic fabric design provides an environmentally responsible alternative for water treatment and industrial oil/water separation, with potential applications extending to sustainable environmental and industrial solutions.
