Corrosion-resistant ferromagnetic absorbers (FMAs) with self-healing properties are crucial for enhancing their durability under harsh conditions. Herein, we fabricated lychee-like FeSiAl (FSA)@C@SiO 2 @1H-Benzotriazol (BTA) coupled with multiple heterogeneous interfaces by coating FSA with a C@SiO 2 @BTA layer using sol-gel, thermal reduction, and molecular encapsulation techniques. The FSA@C@SiO 2 @BTA showed superior microwave absorption (MA) performance than FSA, with a widest absorption bandwidth of 10.44 GHz at 1.98 mm and a maximum reflection loss of −57.81 dB at 2.98 mm. The enhanced MA performance was due to the better impedance matching and the synergistic effects of interfacial and dipole polarization induced by the C@SiO 2 @BTA layer. Moreover, the FSA@C@SiO 2 @BTA exhibited a remarkable corrosion resistance, with a corrosion rate of 3.28 × 10 −10 m/s, which was two orders of magnitude lower than that of FSA, and a corrosion protection efficiency of 99.0 %. The epoxy resin coating containing FSA@C@SiO 2 @BTA also demonstrated a self-healing ability within 5 min after being damaged mechanically. This study presents a novel model that integrates MA, corrosion resistance, and self-healing, heralding new avenues for developing corrosion-resistant FMAs in marine applications.

In this study, we investigated the detection of latent fingerprints (LFPs) using green light- and near-infrared (NIR) light-induced up/down-conversion dual-channel composites. Upconverted yttrium aluminium garnet (YAG) was prepared using a citric acid-assisted sol–gel method. After loading rhodamine 6G (RhD-6) into mesoporous silica nanospheres (MSNs), the MSNs-RhD-6 composites were coated with the as-synthesised YAG via electrostatic adsorption using the layer-by-layer method, demonstrating reversible switching between yellow and green light waves under 525 nm green light or 980 nm laser excitation. To evaluate the effectiveness of YAG-MSNs-RhD-6 powder in criminal investigations, we conducted simulations for different fingerprint scenarios. The results indicated that even after prolonged aging (up to 20 days), exposure to water, or high-temperature baking, the fingerprints remained clearly visible in the images. The detection of LFPs on various substrate surfaces exhibited high contrast, with the details of the fingerprints easily observable even after appropriate magnification. This study opens a new path for green light- and near-infrared light-induced up/down-conversion dual-channel composites for optical applications.

With the development of advanced electronic packaging, a big challenge for the chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) is to achieve the global planarization of EMC (epoxy molding compound)- Si -Cu materials with the normal ceramic abrasives. In this paper, the SiO 2 @CeO 2 core-shell composite abrasive is developed for the CMP of EMC/Si/Cu materials for the first time, and a global planarization with low removal selectivity is expected owing to the synergistic effect of the core-shell abrasives. Two sol-gel synthetic strategies, i.e., oil bath and ultrasonication, are proposed for the controllable synthesis of the SiO 2 @CeO 2 abrasives, which exhibit a good dispersive stability with a large absolute zeta potential >30 mV. The slurry for the CMP of EMC-Si-Cu based on the SiO 2 @CeO 2 abrasives shows the advantage in controlling the surface roughness, material removal rate and the removal selectivity. Especially, the ultrasonic SiO 2 @CeO 2 abrasives give rise to the low surface roughness (Cu 2 nm, Si 0.3 nm, EMC 10 nm) and the low removal selectivity (Cu/EMC/Si = 1.58:1.56:1.00). Therefore, the proposed SiO 2 @CeO 2 core-shell abrasives and the developed CMP slurry opens an alternative way for the planarization of EMC/Si/Cu materials in the advanced electronic packaging.

The detection of heavy metals in soil is of great scientific significance for food security and human health. However, traditional detection methods are complicated, time-consuming, and labor-intensive. Herein, we developed a novel method using Au@SiO 2 nanoparticles (NPs) and surface microstructure combined with laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (Au@SiO 2 NPs-SMS-LIBS) for the rapid detection of lead (Pb), chromium (Cr), and copper (Cu) in soil samples. The surface microstructures and Au@SiO 2 NPs were prepared to improve detection sensitivity and stability. The limits of detection (LODs) for Pb, Cr, and Cu were 0.36 mg/kg, 0.32 mg/kg, and 0.28 mg/kg, respectively, with relative standard deviations (RSDs) of 5.47–6.72 %. The mechanisms of spectral performance enhancement of LIBS detection were thoroughly investigated. Furthermore, the stacking combination model was developed to improve quantitative accuracy, with the correlation of the prediction set (R p 2 ) for Pb, Cr, and Cu being 0.9285, 0.8625, and 0.9160, respectively. This work offers a very promising solution to improve the sensitivity, stability, and accuracy of heavy metal detection. The developed method holds great application potential for large-scale soil assessments and real-time heavy metal pollution monitoring.

Lubricants can effectively solve the large amount of energy loss and environmental pollution caused by frictional wear. Graphene-based materials water-based lubricants have attracted attention due to their excellent various properties. But their application is still hindered by many obstacles. In this paper, a novel polycarboxylate superplasticizer modified 3D porous graphene/SiO 2 (PG/SiO 2 ) nanomaterial was prepared as water-based lubrication additives. The base fluid with good cooling properties was obtained by adding Kunlun full synthetic grinding/cutting fluid to deionized water and diluting it to 5% by weight. It is found that PG/SiO 2 had a good synergistic effect , which could effectively improve the extreme pressure performance (P B /P D ), with the maximum improvement rates of 39.7% and 86.3%, respectively. Meanwhile, significantly enhance the friction reduction (35%) and anti-wear (72.2%) properties of the base fluid. The enhancement mechanism was revealed by experimental and characterization analysis. Due to the excellent mechanical properties of graphene itself and synergistic effects including the rolling bearing effect of PG/SiO 2 and the buffering effect of SiO 2 in its intercalation, the PG/SiO 2 nanomaterials can significantly improve the extreme pressure performance of the base fluid. Further, theoretical calculations revealed the enhancement effects of the long chains of the polycarboxylate superplasticizer on the dispersibility and surface adsorption of graphene, and the modified graphene on the diffusive movement of water molecules.

A novel surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) composite substrates on the basis of Ag triangular nanoplates(Ag TNPs)-modified SiO 2 photonic crystals (PC) is fabricated and applied to the SERS detection of malachite green (MG). It consists of uniformly arranged Ag TNP@SiO 2 , a new PC. Notably, Ag TNP are uniformly aligned on the SiO 2 surface, forming a three-dimensional high-density hotspot nanostructure. With the tip “hot spots” of Ag TNPs, Bragg diffraction of SiO 2 and coupling enhancement between Ag TNPs and SiO 2 , the SERS enhancement of this composite substrates was multiplied. The effect on the SERS of Ag TNP@SiO 2 composite substrate was systematically optimized by tuning Ag TNP size, size of SiO 2 microspheres, coverage of Ag TNPs on SiO 2 and fabrication method of Ag TNPs and PC. Moreover, the uniform of SERS composite substrates and Raman signal was dramatically increased by the method of vertical deposition. Eventually, the SERS composite substrates were employed in MG detection. Its broad detection range of 1 pM–1 μM and low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.49 pM indicated acceptable sensitivity and repeatability. This work illustrates the promising applicability in food safety analysis based on SERS composite substrates composed by Ag TNP@SiO 2 with numerous SERS enhancements and excellent stability.

Smart windows with controllable visible transmittance and high near-infrared (NIR) shielding properties have heightened demands for applications in buildings. Herein, we present a hybrid composite film that can control the visible transmittance and shield NIR light via incorporating Cs x WO 3 /SiO 2 -SH nanoparticles into normal polymer-dispersed liquid crystals (PDLCs) film. The surface-modified SiO 2 -SH helps not only to prevent the aggregation of Cs x WO 3 nanoparticles in polar solvent, but also to maintain the well-dispersibility of Cs x WO 3 /SiO 2 -SH nanoparticles in the prepared film. The results indicated that the samples doped with Cs x WO 3 /SiO 2 -SH nanoparticles exhibited more dramatic electro-optical performance regulation effect than the samples doped with Cs x WO 3 nanoparticles due to the synergistic effect of the enlarged void and the woken anchoring forces. The optical transmittance suggested that the sample containing 7 wt% Cs x WO 3 /SiO 2 -SH nanoparticles can control the transmittance between 0.5 % and 71.2 % in the visible light, and shield more than 75 % NIR radiation. In the outdoor experiment, the temperature difference between two model houses consistently around 7 °C after 2 min exposure to the sun under the experimental conditions, suggesting the outstanding thermal management ability of the as-made film. The work could open new doors for the development of energy-saving smart windows in architecture and vehicle glass.

In this study, a core-shell structural nano-composite material, namely CdTeS@SiO 2 , is synthesized by a simple silanization of Te-doped CdS quantum dots (CdTeS QDs). Through SiO 2 capping, CdTeS QDs not only improve the fluorescence performance effectively, but also greatly enhance the anti-interference ability in the environment. Based on its excellent optical properties , a novel fluorescence sensor is constructed for the ultramicro detection of Ag + . The fluorescence of CdTeS@SiO 2 is strongly quenched in the presence of Ag + and shows good linearity in the range of 0.005–5.0 μmol L −1 with a detection limit as low as 1.6 nmol L −1 . This is mainly due to its unique quenching mechanism: Ag + destroys the spherical structure of SiO 2 and promotes the formation of non-radiative electron-hole pairs through electron transfer , leading to fluorescence quenching . At the same time, it competes with Cd for Te, S and MPA on the CdTeS surface, forming Ag–Te, Ag–S and Ag–MPA complexes attached to the CdTeS surface leading to wavelength red-shift. The feasibility of the proposed sensor is demonstrated through spiking experiments, which confirmed the potential value of the constructed fluorescence probe for real-world applications in detecting Ag + in environmental water.

The relatively weak activity and serious deactivation of anatase TiO 2 nanosheet catalysts with highly exposed {0 0 1} facets ({0 0 1}-TiO 2 ) limits its wide application in photocatalytic degradation of gaseous pollutants. Herein, we propose a hybrid photocatalyst composed of {0 0 1}-TiO 2 and SiO 2 with numerous hydroxyl groups (denoted as {0 0 1}-TiO 2 /HO-SiO 2 ). The catalyst showed excellent performance for gaseous toluene degradation under UV illumination, with 99.2 % removal efficiency and 204.7 μmol L −1 CO 2 yield (about 85.9 % mineralization efficiency) within 120 min. It also demonstrated superior durability over five consecutive cycles of toluene photodegradation. The modification of HO–SiO 2 on {0 0 1}-TiO 2 facilitate the selective adsorption of toluene on the catalyst surface by H-bonding interaction, and make the major poisoning species, benzoic acid, easily desorb from the surface, reducing the catalyst inactivation. Most importantly, we found that the formed Ti O Si bond promotes the separation of photogenerated electron–hole pairs, and provides abundant available electrons for the formation of reactive oxygen radicals and the left holes for the conversion of toluene to benzyl radicals or oxidation of H 2 O to hydroxyl radicals, which results in the improved activity. This study highlights the importance of the introduction of secondary components with special functions on TiO 2 , which is helpful for the design of photocatalysts with high performance and anti-deactivation ability for treatment of volatile organic compounds.

CaO–B 2 O 3 –SiO 2 (CBS) is a promising lightweight, low-dielectric matrix material for high-temperature microwave-absorbing coatings. However, the comprehensive study of absorbent morphology evolution within such coatings and its influence on electromagnetic (EM) performance has not been conducted. In this work, a series of FeSiAl (FSA)/CBS composite coatings with various FSA contents were fabricated using atmospheric plasma spraying. The morphological evolution of the FSA phase and the resulting EM properties of the coatings were systematically analyzed. Experimental findings show that during the spraying process, when the size of FSA clusters in the composite powder exceeds the thickness of CBS splats, FSA clusters form a rigid contact with the underlying solidified coating, leading to the development of a lamellar structure. This lamellar FSA phase creates local conductive networks, which significantly increase the complex permittivity of the coating. These results provide valuable guidance for controlling absorbent morphology and optimizing the EM properties of CBS-based coatings.

Improving catalytic hydrogenation by modifying noble metal catalysts with metal-oxide promoters is promising, but precisely controlling the metal–promoter interface to optimize performance is still challenging. In this study, we created Ir-SnO2/SiO2 nanocatalysts with different Ir/Sn ratios using IrSn alloy precursors through careful calcination and reduction treatments. The SnO2-promoted catalysts showed much better conversion and selectivity than the original Ir/SiO2 catalyst toward the hydrogenation of acetophenone to phenylethanol. The Ir-SnO2/SiO2 catalyst with an Ir/Sn molar ratio of 5/1 (i.e., sample Ir5-(SnO2)1/SiO2) performed the best, achieving a 94% conversion rate and 99% selectivity. Our study found that SnO2 promoters could reduce the surface electron density of the Ir nanoparticles (NPs), enhancing the adsorption of reactants; meanwhile, the new Ir-SnO2 interface is more active for the dissociation of hydrogen compared to Ir alone. The optimal Ir5-(SnO2)1/SiO2 catalyst has demonstrated versatility by effectively catalyzing the hydrogenation of C═O bonds in a wide range of compounds, showing significant potential for various industrial applications in fine chemical synthesis and energy conversion.

In this study, Zn 8 B 3 H 3 O 14 nanosheets were synthesized through a one-step coprecipitation process and employed as both a boron source and substrate templates for the fabrication of boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs), which were synthesized efficiently at low temperatures by the borate nitration method using ammonia as the nitrogen source. The thickness of the synthesized BNNSs ranged from 3 to 10 nm with a flake dimension of about 2.56 μm. The prepared BNNSs using this method realized 98.8% boron source utilization and single batch yields up to gram level. In addition, BNNSs/SiO 2 microwave-transparent composites were prepared to investigate the potential for large-scale applications of the BNNSs produced by using this method. The composites demonstrated a remarkable increase in bending strength and fracture toughness, reaching 122.02 MPa and 2.31 MPa·m 1/2 , respectively, with the addition of only 0.5 wt% BNNSs. Compared with SiO 2 without BNNSs, the fracture toughness of the composites is increased by 106%. A novel crack plugging strong toughening mechanism of BNNSs is proposed. Simultaneously, the composites exhibit exceptional microwave-transparent properties, with dielectric constants below 4 in the real part and below 0.03 in the imaginary part. Therefore, this study has successfully achieved the low-temperature and efficient synthesis of micron-scale BNNSs, laying the groundwork for their large-scale application.
