Effective phosphate adsorption by Zr/Al-pillared montmorillonite: insight into equilibrium, kinetics and thermodynamics

Weiya Huang,Jie Chen,Fei He,Jinpeng Tang,Dan Li,Yi Zhu,Yuanming Zhang

Zirconium-pillared montmorillonite (Zr-Mt) and zirconium/aluminum-pillared montmorillonite (Zr/Al-Mt) were prepared by intercalating Zr 4   + and Zr 4   + /Al 3   + polyhydroxy-cations into the interlayer spaces of natural montmorillonite (Mt). Zr-Mt and Zr/Al-Mt exhibited greater specific surface areas and pore volumes, as compared with Mt. In particular, the enhancement in the phosphate removal performance of Zr/Al-Mt was more significant in terms of phosphate adsorption capacity and rate, in relation to Zr-Mt. Herein, several important parameters, such as contact time, temperature, initial solution pH and competing anion, were investigated in detail to evaluate the phosphate adsorption performances of Zr/Al-Mt. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model fitted our acquired phosphate adsorption data best, in comparison with the use of the pseudo-first-order or the pseudo-third-order kinetic model. The Langmuir model appeared to fit the adsorption process better than that of the Freundlich model, with a maximum phosphate adsorption capacity of 17.2   mg P/g at 25   °C. The thermodynamic parameters (ΔG°, ΔH° and ΔS°) were also determined, which revealed that the phosphate adsorption process was spontaneous and endothermic in nature. A high adsorption capacity was observed at pH   =   3.0, which decreased by increasing pH. The presence of competitive ions, e.g. Cl − , NO 3 − , and SO 4 2   − , slightly impacted the phosphate adsorption; whereas the introduction of CO 3 2   − caused the greatest adverse effect. The study on the Zr/Al-Mt leaching strongly suggested that the risk of Zr 4   + leakage during adsorption process be negligible within a wide pH range of 3.0–9.0. After three adsorption-desorption cycles, there was no significant loss in the adsorption performance of Zr/Al-Mt.

Titanium incorporated with UiO-66(Zr)-type Metal–Organic Framework (MOF) for photocatalytic application

Aoning Wang,Yingjie Zhou,Zhoulu Wang,Miao Chen,Luyi Sun,Xiang Liu

A UiO-66-type metal–organic framework (MOF) fabricated with titanium was successfully prepared via a facial modified post-grafting method. The as-prepared samples were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), ultraviolet-visible adsorption spectroscopy (UV-vis), and photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL) techniques. The introduction of titanium enhanced the optical properties of UiO-66 via the formation of oxo-bridged hetero-Zr–Ti clusters, but led to a sacrifice in crystallinity. The removal of methylene blue (MB) over these samples could be attributed to the dual function of the adsorption and photo-degradation mechanisms. The highest MB removal efficiency of 87.1% was achieved over UiO-66(1.25Ti) under simulated sun-light irradiation.

Facile synthesis of magnetic La–Zr composite as high effective adsorbent for fluoride removal

Pinghua Chen,Weibo Zhang,Menglin Li,Peng Ai,Lei Tian,Hualin Jiang

A novel magnetic composite of La–Zr was prepared by co-precipitation method, and its fluoride removal ability was investigated in batch studies. The sample was characterized by SEM, EDS and FTIR. Influence of various factors such as pH, presence of coexisting anions, contacting time and initial fluoride concentration were studied in detail by batch sorption experiments. The equilibrium data fitted to Langmuir, Freundlich and Lan–Fre isotherm model, and the maximum sorption capacity was calculated to be 88.5 mg g−1, which is higher than lots of previous adsorbents. The kinetic data can be described well by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. It was indicated that the overall rate of fluoride sorption is likely to be controlled by chemisorption process. Based on the results, the mechanism of adsorption was discussed in detail. There is no calcination in the preparing process, so this material is considered to be lower cost as compared with some metal elements-based oxides adsorbents, and is beneficial for the practical application.

Photocatalytic enhancement of TiO2 by B and Zr co-doping and modulation of microstructure

Chengxin Fu,Yinyan Gong,Yitao Wu,Jiaqi Liu,Zhen Zhang,Can Li,Lengyuan Niu

Visible-light photodegradation test revealed that B and Zr co-doping can raise the photocatalytic ability of the undoped TiO 2 by a fold. XRD crystallography and Raman phonon spectroscopy measurements suggest that the Zr 4+ ions replace the Ti 4+ ions while the B 3+ ions occupy the interstitial sites, expanding the unit-cell volume and reducing crystallite size. The incorporation of interstitial boron dopants creates oxygen vacancies (Ov ) and reduce Ti 4+ to Ti 3+ to form [Ov -Ti 3+ ] + , which traps the carriers and prolongs carrier lifetime. Moreover, Zr 4+ ions replace Ti 4+ ions and form impurity levels, which could improve visible light response. The co-doped samples are benefited from both B interstitials and Zr substitutes.

ZrC formation and the phase relations in the Si–Zr–Mg–O–C system

Sun W. Z.,Cheng J. G.,Huang Z. K.,Jiang Y.,Wu L. E.,Liu L. M.

When MgO+ZrO 2 were used as a sintering aid to SiC ceramics, it was found that ZrO 2 reacted with SiC and MgO to form ZrC and a magnesium silicate. This reaction may provide a new route to synthesize ZrC or prepare ZrC/SiC composites by reaction sintering using ZrO 2 , SiC, and MgO as starting materials. In the present work, formation process of the ZrC phase in the SiC–MgO–ZrO 2 system was addressed. Subsolidus phase relations at 1550 °C of the SiC–MgO–ZrO 2 system and the related SiC–SiO 2 –ZrC–ZrO 2 –MgO (Si–Zr–Mg–O–C) system were investigated.

Green synthesis and high-performance fluoride ion removal using lanthanum-modulated MOF-808 (Zr)

Guangqin Shi,Ting He,Haian Li,Zhao Yang,Wu Lei,Mingzhu Xia,Yu Tao

In a water solution and with a low reaction temperature of 85 °C, the green preparation of lanthanum-modulated MOF-808 (Zr) was realized, the obtained La-MOF-808 have smaller grain size, larger specific surface area, higher pore volume and larger average pore diameter. When the molar ratio of La: Zr=1:1, 1L-MOF-808 had the best fluoride ion removal performance, and its maximum adsorption capacity for F - reached 101.4 mg/g, which was higher than that of the unmodulated MOF-808 and some other reported fluorine adsorbents. Meanwhile, the regeneration experiment demonstrated that even after five cycles, 1L-MOF-808 retained 73.8 % of its initial adsorption capacity, highlighting its commendable reusability. In addition, when 1L-MOF-808 was applied to actual fluorine-containing wastewater, with the fluoride ion concentration of 25.3 mg/L and an adsorbent dosage of 0.6 g/L, 1L-MOF-808 exhibited excellent resistance to anionic interference (SO 4 2- , Cl - ), the concentration of fluoride ions in effluent was lower than 10 mg/L, meeting the stipulations of fluoride ion discharge outlined in GB39371–2020. Further adsorption mechanism investigation revealed that 1L-MOF-808's affinity for F - was attributed to electrostatic interaction and ligand exchange. Overall, the as-synthesized 1L-MOF-808 not only presents an environmentally friendly approach to producing MOF materials without organic solvents but also develops a new strategy for the design of high-performance adsorbent for effectively removing fluoride ions from wastewater.

Mesoporous Ce-Ti-Zr ternary oxide millispheres for efficient catalytic ozonation in bubble column

Chao Shan,You Xu,Ming Hua,Min Gu,Zhichao Yang,Peng Wang,Zhenda Lu,Weiming Zhang,Bingcai Pan

Most heterogeneous catalysts available for catalytic ozonation are present as powders and not ideal for column operation in advanced water treatment. In this study, a mesoporous Ce-Ti-Zr ternary oxide (CTZO) millisphere of large size (0.8–1.0 mm in diameter) and high surface area (180 m 2  g −1 ) was synthesized as a highly stable catalyst to meet the hydrodynamic demand in column ozonation. The fraction of Ce(III) is much higher on the surface of CTZO (49.2%) than CeO 2 (27.5%), resulting in its high catalytic activity in ozone decomposition and mineralization of oxalic acid (OA), an ozone-refractory probe compound. The most favorable catalytic ozonation of OA was observed at pH 3.0 and the adsorption of OA by CTZO via surface complexation is a requisite step for its ozonation. The EPR analysis and radical scavenging experiment confirmed that OH was the dominating reactive species in catalytic ozonation of OA by CTZO. XPS revealed that the oxidation of OA was mediated by the Ce(III)/Ce(IV) redox cycle, which continously accepts the electron supply from OA ligand and meanwhile donates electron to activate O 3 into OH. The catalytic ozonation of OA by CTZO was enhanced in the presence of sulfate due to the generation of sulfate radical. Cyclic runs demonstrated that the CTZO millispheres exhibited high stability for sustainable catalytic ozonation of OA without noticeable release of Ce or change of Ce valence state. This study will provide new insight for the development of efficient ozonation catalysts towards practical application in advanced water treatment.

A customized sulfur-doping Zr-MOF-fabric composite for selective and efficient gold recovery

Jiao Wang,Kexin Liu,Lei Shi,Jinshan Xie,Manman Zhao,Wulong Li,Zhanxiong Li

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have exhibited great potential in various adsorption and separation fields, such as the adsorption of metal ions, separation of organic pollutants, and recovery of precious metals from aqueous-based matrices. Here, we prepared a series of sulfur-doping Zr-MOF-fabric composites by in-situ growth of zirconium metal ions with sulfur-containing organic ligands on the surface of carboxylated fabrics (CF-Ph-COOH). The formic acid (FA) regulated mercaptosuccinic acid (MSA) and 2,2’-dithiobisbenzoic acid (DTSA) Zr-MOF-fabric (CF-Zr-MSA-FA and CF-Zr-DTSA-FA) composites exhibit excellent Au 3 + adsorption from water with saturated adsorption capacities of 141.15 mg/g and 169.28 mg/g, respectively, and showing over 90 % adsorption removal rate in the pH range of 2–6, especially for CF-Zr-DTSA-FA could maintain more than 99.99 %. Most strikingly, the prepared MOF-fabric composites display excellent selective adsorption for Au 3+ in mixed solutions, and the selective adsorption efficiency of CF-Zr-MSA-FA and CF-Zr-DTSA-FA was up to 95.69 % and 85.37 %, respectively. Finally, the prepared MOF-fabric composites can be reused as filtering membrane for gold recovery, which also could provide a facile strategy to recover gold from water, and extending the practical applications of MOFs textile composite.

Properties and ceramic transformation of Si–Zr–O–C precursor ceramics with porous structure

Lin Jia,Wang Shuai,Jin Hua,Cui Shuyuan,Wang Rongwen,Yang Yihang,Huang Guimei,Wang Jinhuo

The preparation of ceramic materials with complex porous structures through photopolymerization-based 3D printing requires the development of stable and printable slurries. In this study, zirconium acetylacetonate was incorporated into the thiol vinyl organosilicon prepolymer to create a photosensitive Si–Zr–O–C slurry. Regarding the natural bone structures and the Tyson polygon principle, a gradient pore structure was designed and then printed using a digital light processing 3D printer. After printing, the effects of sintering temperatures on the phase composition and structure of Si–Zr–O–C ceramics were systematically investigated. Subsequently, a comparative analysis of structure and properties was performed on sintered samples with different zirconium acetylacetonate contents. The results revealed that the sample containing 30 wt. % zirconium acetylacetonate exhibited a higher compressive strength of 9.70 ± 0.28 MPa and a lower room temperature thermal conductivity of 0.528 W m −1  K −1 . This study confirmed the significant potential of using 3D printing technology to prepare Si–Zr–O–C precursor ceramics with a porous structure.

Short channeled Zr-SBA-15 supporting copper-based nanoparticles: synthesis, characterization, and antibacterial activity

Yifan Chen,Zibo Zhang,Hailing Fan,Le Pan,Lu Jin

Antibiotic resistance and the high infectivity of bacteria pose an increasingly threat to human health. Mesoporous silica supporting metal-based nanoparticles are considered an effective strategy to fight bacterial infections. In this work, the short channeled mesoporous Zr-SBA-15 (SBA-S) material is synthesized by sol-gel method using ZrOCl 2 ·8H 2 O as an additive. Nanoparticles based on four types of copper species, Cu, Cu 2 O, CuO, and CuSO 4 , are successfully prepared, forming the Cu-loaded SBA-S materials. The composite structures are comprehensively characterized by SEM, TEM, XRD , XPS , UV–Vis DRS, FTIR, ICP , TG, and BET analysis. It turns out that all structures maintain the arrays of highly ordered pore channels, high specific surface area (SSA, ≥500 m 2  g −1 ), and narrow width of pore size (∼7 nm). The release of Cu 2+ ions shows the order is CuSO 4 /SBA-S > CuO/SBA-S > Cu 2 O/SBA-S > Cu/SBA-S. Antibacterial activity assay indicates that CuO/SBA-S shows 1.25 and 0.62 mg mL −1 of the minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) values against E. coli and S. aureus . The acting mechanism would include the free Cu 2+ ions and the nanoparticle-induced reactive oxygen species (ROS). We propose that the cheap CuO/SBA-S material would be a promising antibacterial agent with the good antibacterial activity.
