Trimethylamine (TMA) is an organic amine with strong pungent smell which is an indicator gas for evaluating fish freshness according to the international standard. In this work, as-synthesize α-Fe 2 O 3 solid nanocubes (NCs), α-Fe 2 O 3 nucleoshell NCs and α-Fe 2 O 3 hollow NCs were used as sensing material to develop an outstanding TMA gas sensor. The response of the α-Fe 2 O 3 hollow NCs sensors towards 20 ppm TMA at 230 ℃ was 6.3. Meanwhile, these sensors showed exceptional response/recovery time, low limit of detection, great selectivity, and outstanding linear relationship. Furthermore, the analysis of gases released during the decomposition of Carassius auratus (0–10 days) was conducted, which demonstrated the assessment of TMA by α-Fe 2 O 3 hollow NCs sensor can evaluate the freshness of Carassius auratus . Such a novel sensor signifies the outstanding application potential in efficient gas-sensing properties of TMA, which will make the tremendous contribution for Carassius auratus product evaluation in the future.

This study presents an innovative nanocomposite film with multiple synergistic sterilization modes, which aims to enhance the freshness of fruits and reduce wastage by capitalizing on the availability of sunlight. In detail, α-Fe 2 O 3 /g-C 3 N 4 (FOCN) nanocomposite with excellent visible-light-harvesting ability and photodynamic antibacterial activity was fabricated, which was then filled within a chitosan (CS) matrix, resulting in a novel antibacterial film for food preservation. The obtained α-Fe 2 O 3 /g-C 3 N 4 /chitosan (FOCN/CS) film exhibited impressive antibacterial activities, with sterilizing rate of 99.7 % ± 0.6 % against Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and 97.6 % ± 0.4 % against Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ) with short processing time (10 min) under visible light illumination. Based on this, the FOCN/CS film demonstrated excellent food preservation performance, which significantly prolonged the shelf life of strawberries, baby bok choy and pork. Such satisfactory preservation ability originates from the synergistic effect of α-Fe 2 O 3 and g-C 3 N 4 , which formed S-type heterojunction and bestow the FOCN/CS film with superior photodynamic antibacterial activity. Therefore, the film provides a novel microbiological control barrier for food preservation, with the potential to effectively reduce microbiologically induced food spoilage problems.

Inadequate contact interface, lack of direct electron-transfer paths and low substrate affinity are considered as the main obstacle inhibiting the heterostructure activity for the sustainable photosynthesis of value-added fine chemicals. Herein, a novel 0D/2D Step-scheme (S-scheme) α-Fe 2 O 3 /PbBiO 2 I (FO/PBOI) composite with abundant interface Fe O bonds were initially synthesized via an in-situ growth approach. The created built-in field as a powerful driving force, efficiently steering the migration of photogenerated electrons. The interfacial Fe O bonds act as atomic-level transfer highway, lowering charge transfer energy barrier between the interfaces and further accelerating the S-scheme spatial charge separation. Moreover, the Fe O bonds bridged FO/PBOI can effectively enhance the activation of O 2 and benzylamine, significantly reducing the dehydrogenation barrier for the rate-limiting C 6 H 5 CH 2 NH* intermediate. The optimized FO/PBOI exhibits remarkably improved catalytic activity and general applicability for the dehydrocoupling of primary amines to imines. This work offers an atomic-scale perspective on precise charge flow steering based on interface bond for advanced organic transformations.

Nitrogen doping serves as a viable strategy to improve the activity of heterogeneous Fenton-like catalysts, whereas the practical deployment of Fenton-like technology is restricted by the complexity of nitrogen-doping procedures. Herein, a in-situ nitrogen-doped Fenton-like catalyst was synthesized through calcination from an in-situ iron-incorporated hyper-cross-linked polymer, where aniline functions as both carbon and nitrogen source while FeCl3 serves dual roles as catalyst for the polymerization and iron precursor. The resulting α-Fe2O3/N-CHCP materials were systematically evaluated for methylene blue (MB) degradation via heterogeneous Fenton-like reactions. Comprehensive characterization demonstrates that nitrogen doping effectively modulates the electronic structure of the carbon matrix, facilitating enhanced charge transfer kinetics and promoting efficient ≡Fe3+/≡Fe2+ cycling for superior H2O2 activation. The optimized α-Fe2O3/N-CHCP-2 catalyst exhibits exceptional catalytic performance, achieving complete removal of MB (100 mg L−1) within 15 min under neutral conditions (pH 7.3) with a high apparent rate constant (kobs) of 0.4732 min−1 significantly surpassing the N-free α-Fe2O3/CHCP catalyst (kobs = 0.0159 min−1). The α-Fe2O3/N-CHCP-2 catalytic system also demonstrates remarkable operational flexibility, maintaining high efficiency across a broad pH range (3-10) and in the presence of some common inorganic coexisting ions. Mechanistic investigations, supported by quenching experiments and EPR spectroscopy, reveal that hydroxyl radicals (•OH) are the predominant reactive species, whereas superoxide radicals (•O2−) contribute secondarily to the degradation process. This work establishes an effective synthetic approach for constructing advanced in-situ N-doping and metal-nitrogen-carbon coordination systems with optimized interfacial electron transfer properties, offering promising applications in advanced oxidation processes for wastewater remediation.

Tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) has emerged as a pressing environmental issue due to their extensive use and recalcitrant nature. The integration of Fenton reaction with photoelectrocatalysis, forming a photoelectro-Fenton system, is emerging as a promising strategy for advanced water treatment. This study aims to address the critical challenges of severe charge recombination and sluggish surface reaction kinetics in α-Fe 2 O 3 during photoelectrocatalytic pollutant degradation. Through Co-doped modification, Fe 2−x Co x O 3 photoanodes were successfully fabricated. The results demonstrate that partial substitution of Fe 3+ by Co 2+ not only effectively enhances charge carrier concentration but also induces the formation of substantial oxygen vacancies. This synergistic effect consequently leads to significantly improved electrical conductivity and expanded visible-light absorption range. Firstly, Co 2+ functions as an electron donor, continuously reducing Fe 3+ to Fe 2+ and thereby sustaining the cycling of the Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ . Concurrently, this process facilitates the efficient and continuous conversion of oxygen to H 2 O 2 via a two-electron reduction pathway. Secondly, the coexisting Co 2+ /Co 3+ and Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ bimetallic cycles on the material surface enabling sustained activation of H 2 O 2 to trigger the Fenton reaction, which generates substantial amounts of highly reactive hydroxyl radicals (·OH) and other active substances, achieving rapid decomposition and mineralization of TCH molecules.

As a vital chemical intermediate, o-cresol is integral to many high-value manufacturing processes. Its synthesis via the methylation of phenol using methanol represents a green and atom-efficient route. Despite exhibiting promising ortho -selectivity, conventional α-Fe 2 O 3 catalyst are often limited by insufficient activity under mild conditions, restricting their practical utility. To address the limited catalytic efficiency of conventional α-Fe 2 O 3 in low-temperature o-cresol synthesis, a nano α-Fe 2 O 3 catalyst was fabricated using a polyethylene glycol (PEG) assisted precipitation method. The catalyst was comprehensively characterized using XRD, N 2 physisorption, TEM, NH 3 -TPD, XPS and EPR. These analyses elucidated the role of PEG in the catalyst synthesis, demonstrating that the PEG-assisted method significantly enhances specific surface area, acidity and oxygen vacancies, thereby collectively improving catalytic performance. Compared to α-Fe 2 O 3 , the novel catalyst achieved a significantly higher phenol conversion of 15.8 % versus 8.5 % under 340 °C and 3 h −1 . Furthermore, the amount of PEG added in the assisted precipitation process was optimized and the mechanism of the phenol methylation reaction over 2.5PEG/α-Fe 2 O 3 was clarified. The results provide a basis for designing efficient catalysts, thereby facilitating their industrial application in o-cresol production.

Hybrids of α-Fe 2 O 3 /Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles embedded in N doped graphitic carbon polyhedron layered arrays (FeO x /NCLA) were simply constructed by pyrolyzing the composite precursor of NH 2 -MIL-101(Fe) (a metal organic framework, MOF) and glycylglycine. The experimental and calculated results reveal that the obtained catalysts exhibited multiple active components, synergistic heterojunction effect, high BET surface areas and conductivity, and consequently greatly improved intrinsic electrocatalytic activities and kinetics for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). As the results, the optimized catalyst FeO x /NCLA-1.2 exhibited positive half-wave potential of 0.846 V for ORR and only 218 mV of overpotential (at 10 mA/cm 2 ) for OER in alkaline electrolyte, which is superior than Pt/C (20 %) and RuO 2 , respectively. The Zn-air battery (ZAB) employing the FeO x /NCLA-1.2 as electrocatalyst obtained a peak power density of 104.3 mW·cm −2 , a specific capacity of 840 mAh·g Zn -1 and an energy density of 890 Wh·kg Zn -1 , which is also much higher than that for the noble metal based one. The catalyst is promised to be applied in water electrolysis, fuel cells and metal-air batteries.

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) as an emerging porous material have exhibited excellent application prospects in the field of photocatalysis. Nevertheless, the overall water splitting using solar energy by COF-based photocatalysts remains a huge challenge due to the rapid charge recombination and insufficient redox catalytic capacity. Herein, for the first time, the novel Fe-MOF-derived α-Fe 2 O 3 and FeP-PC was designed and adopted as dual co-catalysts to facilitate the separation and utilization efficiency of charge carriers and activate the overall water splitting performance of the ketoenamine based TpPa-1-COF, with both the porous α-Fe 2 O 3 and FeP-PC acting as the framework supporting to effectively prevent the agglomeration of TpPa-1-COF during the fabrication and photocatalytic process. Meanwhile, the construction of Z-scheme heterostructures and the connection of covalent bonds in the interface of α-Fe 2 O 3 /TpPa-1-COF/FeP-PC effectively facilitate the separation and transport of charge. Consequently, the optimal α-Fe 2 O 3 /TpPa-1-COF/FeP-PC excites very competitive photocatalytic overall water splitting performance.

A series of highly active and ortho -position selective catalysts based on (α-Fe 2 O 3 ) 1- x (V 2 O 5 ) x catalysts were proposed for the C -methylation of phenol with methanol. The (α-Fe 2 O 3 ) 1- x (V 2 O 5 ) x catalysts were synthesized by coprecipitation method of Fe and V elements and microwave drying. The chemical composition, material structure, acid-base properties, and structure-activity relationship of (α-Fe 2 O 3 ) 1- x (V 2 O 5 ) x catalysts were systematically analyzed by the techniques of XRD, XPS, TEM, N 2 adsorption-desorption, Raman, UV-Vis, ESR, NH 3 /CO 2 -TPD and Pyridine-IR. The (α-Fe 2 O 3 ) 1- x (V 2 O 5 ) x catalysts have the double advantages of high activity and high stability for the methylation of phenol due to the high BET surface area, large total pore volume, dispersive active sites and enhanced acid-base property. o -cresol and 2,6-xylenol were the main products, and nearly 100% selectivity to the ortho -position of phenol and 90% selectivity to o -cresol were obtained. Furthermore, the (α-Fe 2 O 3 ) 1- x (V 2 O 5 ) x catalysts possess long lifetime over 2500 h and high activity at a weight hourly space velocity of 1.6 h −1 compared with the microwave-dried α-Fe 2 O 3 catalyst. The doping of vanadium improves the activity and stability of α-Fe 2 O 3 catalyst, which attributes to the modification of catalyst structure, especially the improvement of acid-base centers and oxygen vacancy. Recently the (α-Fe 2 O 3 ) 1- x (V 2 O 5 ) x catalysts have been stably and efficiently applied in industry for the methylation of phenol.

In this work, we present a new metal oxide semiconductor gas sensor for detecting trimethylamine (TMA) by bimetal Au@Pt-modified α-Fe2O3 hollow nanocubes (NCs) as sensing materials. The structure and morphological characteristics of Au@Pt/α-Fe2O3 were evaluated through multiple analyses, and their gas-sensitive performance was investigated. Compared with the pristine α-Fe2O3 NC sensor, the sensor based on Au@Pt/α-Fe2O3 NCs exhibited faster response time (5 s) and higher response (Ra/Rg = 32) toward 100 ppm TMA gas at a lower temperature (150 °C). Furthermore, we also assessed the Au@Pt/α-Fe2O3 NC sensor for detecting the freshness of Larimichthys crocea which have been observed by headspace solid-phase microextraction and gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. The high performance of the Au@Pt/α-Fe2O3 NCs is attributed to the special hollow morphology with a high specific surface area (212.9 m2/g) and the synergistic effect of the Au@Pt bimetal. The Au@Pt/α-Fe2O3 sensor shows promising application prospects in estimating seafood freshness on the spot.

Photocatalytic overall water splitting simultaneously generates O2 and H2; this is a potential strategy to solve the energy shortage problem. Elemental phosphorus (RP) displays ultralow visible light performance for O2 and H2 generation; thus, a novel α-Fe2O3/RP composite is designed and prepared by a low-temperature hydrothermal method via loading a trace amount of α-Fe2O3. In the experiment, the 1.5% α-Fe2O3/RP composite showed the best overall water splitting performance, which is 6.9 times that of bare RP. Through various characterization studies, the recombination rate of charges is significantly reduced. It is largely ascribed to the matched energy band structure of the two photocatalysts and the interface contact between α-Fe2O3 and RP, which efficiently separates the photocarriers through an S-scheme mode and realizes the obvious enhancement of overall water splitting performance. Moreover, α-Fe2O3/RP maintains high activity when it is persistently irradiated for 15 cycles. The research provides insight into the exploitation of low-cost, high-activity, and stable RP-based photocatalysts to achieve visible light induced overall water splitting activity to generate O2 and H2.

To effectively utilize the hazardous industrial solid waste manganese residue (MR), a MR-derived Fe 2 O 3 -baesd photocatalyst with efficient charge transfer, abundant reactive sites and high redox performance was developed for simultaneously removing organic pollutants and heavy metals . Herein, a novel “confined growth” strategy was proposed to fabricate an amorphous MnO 2 decorated α-Fe 2 O 3 @geopolymer sphere (A-MnO 2 /Fe 2 O 3 @GS) Z-scheme heterojunction by ion exchange method, which was used as a photo-Fenton catalyst for efficiently reducing Cr(VI) and degrading ciprofloxacin (CIP). Characterization results reveal that the 3D hydrangea-like MnO 2 with low crystallinity could not only capture and accelerate electron transfer but also act as an electron conduction bridge and a surface oxygen adsorption site, resulting in efficient separation and utilization of charge. More importantly, the photocatalytic reduction capacity was greatly enhanced in Z-scheme heterojunction owing to the lower conduction band potential of MnO 2 . A-MnO 2 /Fe 2 O 3 @GS showed excellent photocatalytic activity with CIP removal of 99.1% within 40 min and Cr(VI) removal of 97.6% within 50 min, which were 8.13 and 3.47 times higher than those catalyzed by Fe 2 O 3 @GS, respectively. This can be ascribed to the formation of intimate interface, internal electrostatic field , and rich structure defects in the Z-scheme heterojunction. This work offers a new idea to construct Z-scheme photocatalysts with high reactivity for environmental modification.
