We study the mechanical behavior of Au nanomeshes (AuNMs) based on finite element analysis (FEA) simulation and deformation tests. The simulated results of mechanical flexibility indicate that polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate can release the stress of AuNMs under mechanical stretching and bending, the displacement of stretched AuNMs yields a 2% promotion, and the displacement of bent AuNMs yields a 3.5% promotion under buffering of PET substrate at 5 GPa yield strength of nanoscale Au. The stress and displacement distribution of the AuNMs/PET is demonstrated and analyzed. The further deformation tests of AuNMs under compressive and tensile loading indicate that the simulation data are in good agreement with experimental results. This paper is conducive to understanding the mechanical behavior and corresponding structural response and structural fracture dynamics of AuNMs.

Two-dimensional (2D) materials have garnered significant attention due to their distinctive physicochemical properties, with 2D noble metal nanodendrites being particularly intriguing in terms of their properties and functional prospects. However, the synthesis of ultrathin and highly branched gold nanodendrites (AuNDs) still poses challenges. In this study, we successfully achieved the synthesis of highly branched 2D AuNDs with a thickness of 4 nm by employing a carboxyl-functionalized C 22 -tailed surfactant along with the co-directing agent 2-mercaptonicotinic acid (2-MNA). The careful selection of specific thiol molecules such as 2-MNA is crucial for controlling the degree of branching and promoting the formation of ultrathin nanodendrites. Furthermore, we extended this method to synthesize alloy nanodendrites (AuAg NDs and AuCoAg NDs) using a similar approach. Due to their highly branched and ultrathin two-dimensional morphology, these prepared AuNDs exhibit excellent catalytic performance in the model reaction for 4-NP reduction. This thiol-induced synthesis strategy for AuNDs opens up new possibilities for designing other Au nanomaterials with an ultrathin morphology/structure.

We present a wide-spectrum photoluminescence (PL) enhancement effect on the multi-heterojunction of ZnSe quantum dots and gold nanoparticles (NPs). The Au/ZnSe heterojunction is fabricated using Langmuir–Blodgett assembling method. The photoluminescence is measured using a 150 nm aperture ultraviolet laser beam spot of a scanning near-field optical microscope. The enhancement of band-gap emission and defect PL, the quenching of the fluorescence are, respectively, observed, which depend on the distance of gold NPs and ZnSe quantum dots. The enhancement of the band-gap emission is ascribed to the local field enhancement induced by the resonant coupling between the excitons of ZnSe and the surface plasmons of gold NPs. The enhancement of the defect PL is a result of the electron trapped by the defect states in the process of transporting electrons from ZnSe QDs to gold NPs due to the increase of the built-in electric field to hinder the electron transfer to gold nanoparticles. In addition, the quenching of the fluorescence is due to the electron transfer from ZnSe quantum dots to gold NPs. Our result opens the possibility of applications in forming uniform optoelectronic heterojunction and in controlling fluorescent efficiency of PL devices.

CO2-selective photoreduction to value-added products is ideal, but its practical application suffers from weak photogenerated carrier separation and insufficient multielectron transport. Herein, we constructed the tricomponent AuNPs@SnO2–AuNCs hybrid by decorating Au nanoclusters (AuNCs) on the Au nanoparticle (AuNPs)@SnO2 core–shell structure. AuNC–NP dual coupling endowed AuNPs@SnO2–AuNCs with an excellent CO yield of 64.8 μmol g–1 h–1 during CO2 photoreduction, which was higher than the role of separate application of AuNCs (25.3 μmol g–1 h–1) and AuNPs (16.0 μmol g–1 h–1). It was mainly attributed that the coaction of AuNPs and AuNCs not only enhanced the visible light absorption capacity but also improved the photogenerated carrier separation/migration. As a result, the electron-rich AuNCs induced from plasmonic AuNPs and photoexcited SnO2 promoted the photocatalytic CO2-to-CO performance. This work provides a new perspective to design multicomponent photocatalysts for highly efficient CO2 conversion.

The gold-silver (Au-Ag) bimetallic nanocomposites were prepared in acid aqueous solution by co-reduction of chloroauric acid and silver nitrate with sodium borohydride in the presence of well-defined diblock copolymer poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)- block -poly(4-vinylpyridine) UV–vis spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction revealed the formed nanocomposites were truly bimetallic nanoparticles rather than the physical mixture of monometallic nanoparticles. The bimetallic nanocomposites showed optical properties corresponding to both their metallic composition and system temperature. The surface plasmon resonance showed a red-shift with increase of the ratio of Au in the nanocomposites, and appeared in their temperature changes. The bimetallic nanocomposites exhibited surface plasmon band corresponding to Au below 4 °C, corresponding to both Au and Ag increasing to 42 °C, and corresponding to Ag above 45 °C. When these bimetallic nanocomposites were applied to catalyze 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol, their catalytic activity first increased and then decreased and finally increased again with the temperature change.

Polyaniline (PANI)/Au hybrid nanostructure was synthesized by a simple two-step process without any other templates or additives. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were employed to study the morphologies and structures of the hybrid. Results indicate that the AuNPs are evenly immobilized on the PANI nanofibers. Notably, the PANI/Au nanostructure exhibits extremely high catalytic activity toward the organic dyes, 4-nitro phenol (4-NP), and methylene blue (MB), which are attributed to stimulation effects of the AuNPs on the electrons transmission of NaBH4 to 4-NP or MB.

Hybrid noble-metal nanostructures , which integrate plasmonic characteristics and electrocatalytic performance, have garnered significant interest recently. In this study, Au@Pd nanostars were synthesized and employed as an advanced electrocatalyst for the ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR), which suffers from the kinetic limitations of the anodic half-reaction of direct ethanol fuel cells. Leveraging the superior surface plasmon resonance (SPR) property of Au nanostars, the synthesized Au@Pd nanostars exhibited superior plasmon-enhanced EOR activity of 4191.63 A g −1 under laser illumination , noting a 9.40-fold increase compared to dark conditions (445.99 A g −1 ). The influences of Pd loading and laser power on EOR activity were explored. The impact of Pd loading on EOR activity demonstrates a volcano-shaped correlation, where optimal Pd coverage enhances catalysis but excessive amounts dampen SPR performance, crucial for maximizing EOR activity. Within a specified range, EOR activity linearly increases with laser power due to its influence on SPR performance. Mechanistic investigation suggests the critical roles of photothermal effect and hot carriers’ separation in boosting EOR kinetics. The repeated experiments show little difference, ensuring the accuracy and reproducibility of the reported activity of Au@Pd nanostars for EOR. During the long-term stability estimation, the Au@Pd nanostars display the best durability over three electrocatalysts. Overall, our findings highlight the potential of plasmon-enhanced catalysis in advancing the performance of electrocatalysts for EOR and other conventional electrocatalytic reactions.

The overreliance on non-renewable energy sources like fossil fuels has led to severe energy crises and environmental pollution, hindering sustainable development. Harnessing solar energy for water splitting through semiconductor photocatalysts offers a promising solution. Titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ), a benchmark photocatalyst, is favored for its cost-effectiveness, non-toxicity, and stability under ultraviolet light. However, its weak light absorption, limited range, and high carrier recombination rates pose challenges. Herein, we designed an Au nanoparticle modified TiO 2 (Au/TiO 2 ) using a two-step method involving initial stirring adsorption followed by calcination . This composite material exhibits a localized surface plasmon resonance property, demonstrating powerful light absorption capacity in both the visible and near infrared regions. Moreover, following the decoration of Au nanoparticles, in situ XPS reveal Au/TiO 2 exhibits a metal-support interaction, thereby enhancing the separation and migration of photogenerated carriers and decreasing the recombination rate of photogenerated charges. Thus, Au/TiO 2 shows a photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate of 47.89 mmol g −1 h −1 , which is 39.25 times higher than that (1.22 mmol g −1 h −1 ) of pristine TiO 2 and among the top rankings of TiO 2 -based photocatalysts. This study provides a novel approach to developing a photocatalyst capable of absorbing a broad spectrum of solar energy.

The enrichment and recovery of gold from wastewater are an alternative method to obtain this noble metal, which benefits reducing hazardous emissions from the conventional ore mining process and reserving natural gold for sustainable development. Inspired by our previous work (Lei et al., Macromol. Rapid Comm. 2022, 2200712), four families of microporous polyureas (mPPUs) with a large surface area (690 m2 g–1) and abundant heteroatom sites have been prepared via the factor-optimized solvothermal protocol. The resultant sample NPU-A starting from 1,5-naphthalene diisocyanate (NDI) and tri(4-aminophenyl) amine (TAPA) exhibits the maximum Au(III) adsorption capacity of 1300 mg g–1 and high selectivity even when the Au(III) concentration is as low as 0.1 mg L–1. This study not only demonstrates the robustness of the high-throughput synthetic strategy but also promotes the investigation of the structure–activity correlation between the mPPU chemical structure and Au(III) adsorption performance.

Direct ethanol fuel cell can convert chemical energy into electric energy directly, and has the advantages of being free from Carnot cycle and being friendly to environment, so it has a broad application prospect. However, the insufficient activity and toxicity resistance of anodic catalysts limit their commercial application, mainly due to the limited adsorption sites and the toxic inactivation of catalysts resulting from the production of toxic intermediates (CO ads ) during the ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) process. In this study, the Au@PdAg porous hemispherical catalyst assembled by nanotubes was successfully prepared by soft template method and co-reduction method using dioctadecyl dimethyl ammonium chloride (DODAC) as surfactant, and its EOR performance was tested. Au@Pd 1.0 Ag 1.0 has the highest mass current density with a peak value of 4048.8 mA mg Pd − 1 , which is 7.8 times of Pd/C (JM). After 5000 s stability test, the residual current density value is still 863.4 mA mg Pd − 1 . The results showed that the introduction of the oxygenophilic metal Ag was conducive to the formation of OH ads and the oxidation of CO ads . The porous structure of the nanotube assembly facilitates electron transfer and provides more adsorption sites, which makes the catalyst show good electrocatalytic activity and anti-CO poisoning ability.
