Highly efficient conversion of Kraft lignin into liquid fuels with a Co-Zn-beta zeolite catalyst

Xiaomeng Dou,Xiao Jiang,Wenzhi Li,Chaofeng Zhu,Qingchuan Liu,Qiang Lu,Xusheng Zheng,Hou-min Chang,Hasan Jameel

Kraft lignin depolymerization to liquid fuels with high yields is crucial to the comprehensive achievement of sustainable and economic feasibility. Herein, we prepared a bimetallic Co-Zn/Off-Al H-beta catalyst through a two-step post synthesis method composed of dealumination and metal incorporation. The bifunctional Co-Zn/Off-Al H-beta catalyst efficiently converted Kraft lignin to liquid fuels, which was attributable to the synergistic effect of Co hydrogen binding sites and Zn Lewis acid sites on H-beta support. Catalytic hydrogenation with Co:Zn = 1:3/Off-Al H-beta catalyst at 320 °C for 24 h gave the highest yield of petroleum ether soluble product (81%, mainly monomers and dimers). Under these conditions, the liquefied lignin gave a higher heating value of 33.3 MJ/kg, which is a significant increase from 26.0 MJ/kg of Kraft lignin. The catalyst stability test showed excellent recyclability. This work provides a paradigm of improving lignin depolymerization efficiency via the combined use of Lewis acid and hydrogenation catalyst.

N, F-doped graphene quantum dots effectively inhibit the fibrillization of amyloid-beta peptide (1–42)

Yatao Pan,Guangjing Hou,Xiaojuan Wang,Xia Ran,Pingan Liu,Lijun Guo

Developing novel inhibitors for the fibrillization of amyloid peptides and understanding the relevant assembly processes are essential for biomedical and biomaterial sciences. Herein, we have synthesized and characterized the nitrogen and fluorine co-doped graphene quantum dots (N, F-GQDs), and investigated their inhibition of the fibrillization of Amyloid-beta peptide (1–42) (Aβ 42 ) by monitoring the assembly morphologies in the Aβ 42 /N, F-GQDs systems. Our results indicate that the N, F-GQDs functionalized with multiple surface groups effectively inhibits the fibrillization of amyloid Aβ 42 . The strong adsorption of Aβ 42 on N, F-GQDs significantly reduces the generation of β-sheet structures and the cytotoxicity of Aβ 42 /N, F-GQDs aggregates. Accordingly, a morphological evolution from the long fibrils of Aβ 42 to the spherical particles and unique closed-loop structures of Aβ 42 /N, F-GQDs have been captured. A possible interpretation for the observed phenomena in the presence of N, F-GQDs has been proposed by combining the different inhibition effects of other GQDs on the fibrillization of Aβ 42 and the results from various control experiments. Moreover, the inhibition activity of N, F-GQDs demonstrates good adaptability to resist the fluctuation of pH value and the interference of divalent metal ions , facilitating their practical applications in the future.

Preparation and dual activation of beta-cyclodextrin derived hollow carbon spheres for highly efficient electro-Fenton

Jingjing Zhan,Min Zhan,Xiujuan Zhang,Yiwen Zhang,Tianxiang Wang,Yang Liu,Shoukai Wang

There are many reports related to the hollow carbon nanosphere with the applications in electrochemistry. However, it remains insufficient research in the field of electro-Fenton. In this study, we discovered that hollow carbon spheres can be obtained by the self-assembly of β-cyclodextrin in one step, without using any templates and toxic organic solvents. Meanwhile, activation methods were explored to create more pores and regulate the surface groups in the outer shell of the materials, which are key factors affecting the H 2 O 2 production capability. It is found that H 2 carbonization effectively converts a large number of sp 2 -C bonds on the surface of the materials to sp 3 -C, providing more active sites for reaction during the electrocatalytic process. The results show that the hollow carbon nanosphere after dual activations has the most H 2 O 2 production rate at 70 mg·L -1 ·h −1 , higher than those of carbon solid spheres and unmodified hollow carbon nanospheres. In the application of electro-Fenton, this material exhibits the degradation efficiency of 95.5 % for 50 mg·L -1 p -nitrophenol, fully meeting the needs of environmental remediation. The whole preparation and activation process is simple, environmentally friendly, easy to be scaled up and has broad application prospects. This paper enhanced the understanding of common hollow carbon spheres in the hot research field of electro-Fenton.

Antifungal pentachloronitrobenzene/hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin inclusion complex nanofibers by electrospun with no polymer: Fabrication and characterization

Shuang Gao,Lei Zong,Yuhang Zhang,Yang Zhang,Xinyu Guo,Guanhua Guo,Lixia Zhao,Fei Ye,Ying Fu

Pentachloronitrobenzene (PCNB) is an organochlorine protective fungicide with poor water solubility. In this research, pentachloronitrobenzene/hydroxypropyl- β -cyclodextrin inclusion complex nanofibers (PCNB/HP β CD-IC-NF) with a stoichiometric ratio of 1:1 were prepared by polymer-free electrospinning for the establishment of a rapidly dissolving water-based drug delivery system. It was proved that the formation of PCNB/HP β CD-IC enhanced the water solubility and thermal stability of PCNB by phase solubility study and thermogravimetric analysis respectively. Specifically, the solubility of PCNB in 10 mM HP β CD solution enhanced about 2.83 times, while the initial thermal decomposition temperature of PCNB in PCNB/HP β CD-IC-NF was also increased from 124 °C to 235 °C. The antifungal activity experiment exhibited that the antifungal activity of PCNB/HP β CD-IC-NF against Rhizoctonia solani was 2.13 times higher than that of pure PCNB. In summary, the formulation of PCNB/HP β CD-IC-NF prepared in the present study could efficaciously improve the solvability, thermal stability and antifungal activity of PCNB, thereby promoting the development of PCNB dosage form to water-based and low-pollution, which had potential in reducing the harm of PCNB to the environment and developing clean pesticide formulations.

Highly stable VSi-beta zeolite synthesized by a post-synthesis strategy for efficiently catalyzing styrene epoxidation

Zhibo Xu,Fumin Wang,Xubin Zhang,Yi Zhai,Linfang Jiang,Kaiwei Wang,Yongwang Li,Qing Zhang

To enhance the doping of vanadium in zeolites and achieve high stability, the selection of vanadium precursors containing specific vanadium species can effectively overcome this crucial problem. Two series of V x Si-Beta(A) and V x Si-Beta(N) zeolites have been prepared by a two-step post-synthesis method at pH = 1 and pH = 7. The properties and environments of vanadium in samples are investigated by UV–vis, XPS, EPR, H 2 -TPR and 51 V MAS NMR. The bonding between vanadium and framework in VSi-Beta(A) is stronger than that of VSi-Beta(N). After the two are calcined or hydrated, the vanadium species in the former are relatively stable, while the pseudo-tetrahedral V(V) species and pseudo-octahedral V(V) species in the latter are interconverted. The changes of vanadium species in the supernatant during the preparation have been investigated by 51 V static NMR. At low concentration and pH = 1, there is a unique mononuclear cation (VO 2 + ) in the aqueous NH 4 VO 3 solution, which is favorable for the interaction with the negatively charged hydroxyl nests generated after the nitric acid dealumination , and enables the V atoms to be tightly inserted into the framework. In styrene epoxidation, the type of V(V) species in the catalyst could significantly affect its catalytic performance, and the catalytic activity and stability of V x Si-Beta(A) are superior than that of V x Si-Beta(N).

Preparation of chlorine-resistant and regenerable antifouling nanofiltration membrane through interfacial polymerization using beta cyclodextrin monomers

Chongbin Wang,Hongchao Wang,Yongsheng Li,Yuanyuan Feng,Kun Zhang,Sijie Fan,Li Cao

Constructing membrane with good chlorine resistance and antifouling properties is considered to be important challenges confronting membrane applications. In this study, a composite nanofiltration (NF) membrane (β-CD x/y /PES) was prepared by interfacial polymerization using beta cyclodextrin (β-CD) monomers . Subsequently, the β-CD-based (AZ-β-CD x/y /PES) membrane was prepared by assembling azobenzene labeled zwitterions into the hydrophobic internal cavity of β-CD via host-guest interaction. The optimized membrane exhibited slight change in water flux and rejection under chlorine environment. The AZ-β-CD x/y /PES membrane also displayed an evidently lower loss in water flux in the antifouling test in comparison with the β-CD x/y /PES membrane. More interestingly, the trans azo groups in azobenzene labeled zwitterions can turn into the cis isomers as the visible light irradiation converted to the UV light irradiation, breaking the interaction between azobenzene labeled zwitterions and β-CD. Hence, the contaminants upon the membrane surface can be simply eliminated by water washing under UV light irradiation. The antifouling membrane can be regenerated via immersing the reacquired β-CD 2/10 /PES membrane into fresh azobenzene labeled zwitterions solution again.

Hydroxypropyl-beta-Cyclodextrin embedded resveratrol regulates gut microbiota to prevent NAFLD via activating AMPK signaling pathway

Wenya Ke,Juan Huang,Yi Zhong,Yuhong Shi,Fen Yan,Da Huang,Yuanzi Wu,Houbing Zheng,Zuquan Weng

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has become a globally rising issue that can cause liver-related morbidity and mortality. Recent studies have revealed that a high-fat diet (HFD) highly contributes to the prevalence and progression of NAFLD via impacting gut microbiota and lipid metabolism signal pathways. Resveratrol (RSV), a natural bioactive compound , has exhibited potential for preventing and alleviating NAFLD. However, due to the poor bioavailability of RSV, its strengths and underlying mechanisms for NAFLD therapeutic potential are poorly understood. To address this, we utilized Hydroxypropyl-beta-Cyclodextrin (HBC) to encapsulate RSV to enhance its water solubility and conducted prevention and intervention experiments in HFD-fed mice. The results showed that the HBC has significantly enhanced the water solubility of RSV by 250-fold and the HBC-RSV better prevented and alleviated the liver steatosis, obesity and abnormal lipid metabolism induced by HFD than RSV alone. Meanwhile, combining HFD and HBC-RSV or RSV prevented HFD mice progressing to NAFLD. Besides, further investigation indicated that RSV could resist liver injury and obesity by modulating gut microbiota, raising the levels of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) and activating AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) signaling pathway . The activated pathway down-regulated sterol receptor element binding protein 1c (SREBP1c) and acetyl-coenzyme A carboxylase (ACC) to decrease lipid synthesis and up-regulated peroxisome proliferators-activated receptorα (PPARα) to promote the fatty acid oxidation , thus preventing NAFLD. Our findings suggested that water solubility-enhanced RSV beneficially modulated gut microbiota, altered gut microbiota-derived SCFAs, and activated lipid metabolism regulatory pathways, providing potential for NAFLD prevention and alleviation.

Au/Sn-Beta catalyst with metal-Lewis acid cooperative sites steers aerobic oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural

Weiping Liao,Haoyi Lin,Jiaxing Zhang,Jiaqi Wang,Kaixuan Yang,Ting Su,Hongying Lü,Zhiguo Zhu

2,5-Furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) is a potential substitute of petroleum-based terephthalic acid to manufacture polymer. The selective aerobic oxidation of renewable 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to FDCA is a promising and appealing route for establishing sustainable and environmentally friendly chemical process. Au catalysts have exhibited exceptional catalytic performances for this highly anticipated chemical transformation, where the used support intensively impacts the catalytic productivity from the standpoint of metal-support and guest organic-support interactions. Herein, Sn-Beta zeolite was straightforward and rapidly synthesized via structural reconstruction without the auxiliary of any solvents, which was adopted as support for Au catalyst to construct bifunctional catalysts. As for Au/Sn-Beta sample, Lewis acid sites were related to Sn 4+ ions in the zeolite framework, while electronic properties and particle size of Au species were capable of being modulated by Au dosages. In addition, charge transfer from Au species to framework Sn 4+ ions resulted in the formation of Au δ+ species. Au/Sn-Beta catalyst with metal-Lewis acid cooperative active sites showed unique catalytic productivity of FDCA product in the aerobic oxidation of HMF to FDCA, whose catalytic performance was correlated with Lewis acid amounts as well as geometric and electronic effect of Au particle. Reaction mechanism analysis revealed the pathway and concrete step that Lewis acid site functioned. The aim is to provide some guidance for constructing a task-specific multifunctional supported catalyst from the view of support-enhanced effect for the catalytic conversion of biomass resource with multi-functional-groups.

Host–guest stoichiometry affects the physicochemical properties of beta-cyclodextrin/ferulic acid inclusion complexes and films

Yuan Li,Jiayin Huang,Zhiheng Hu,Mingyong Zeng,Zunying Liu,Yaqin Hu

An inclusion system of embedding ferulic acid into β-cyclodextrin (FACD) with different host–guest stoichiometries was prepared by a co-precipitation method. Then, the physicochemical properties and release kinetics of the FACD were evaluated. The results of thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) proved the successful embedding of FA into the β-cyclodextrin matrix. Four mathematical models were applied to adjust the ferulic acid release profile and identify preferential kinetics. The results of physicochemical properties confirmed the successful formation of the complexes. The loading capacity (LC) and encapsulation efficiency (EE) of the inclusion complex (1 : 0.5) were 41.0 ± 3.28 mg g−1 and 52.1 ± 2.31%, respectively, which were significantly higher than other molar ratios. The release behaviour revealed that loaded FA molecules under various host–guest stoichiometries obey different release models. While lower host–guest stoichiometry (1 : 0.5) provided desirable EE, the moderate host–guest stoichiometry (1 : 1) exhibited faster release behaviour. The FACD inclusion complex could be a promising bioactive material for food preservation.

In situ structural reconstruction triggers the hydrothermal synthesis of hierarchical Ti-Beta zeolites for oxidative desulfurization

Haikuo Ma,Haoyi Lin,Xiuquan Liu,Hongying Lü,Zhiguo Zhu

Fabricating hierarchical porosity in a metallosilicate zeolite crystal is a facile and efficient approach to increase the accessibility of active sites and to enhance the diffusion performance in the process of catalytic reactions, particularly those involving bulky guest organics. The straightforward and efficient synthesis of hierarchical metallosilicate zeolites was intensively limited by the high-cost mesoporogen, complicated and tedious synthesis procedures, broad mesoporous size distribution, restricted zeolite topologies, and low solid yield. Herein, an innovative hydrothermal synthesis methodology of a hierarchical heteroatom-containing zeolite, in this case of Ti-Beta, via in situ structural reconstruction was proposed. Tetraethylammonium hydroxide (TEAOH) played significant roles of not only as base source, functioning etching effect, but also as structure directing agent (SDA), reconstructing the framework structure in this hydrothermal synthesis. The mesoporosity and Ti4+ species coordinate state could be regulated by varying the TEAOH content, which was closely related to the catalytic activity in oxidative desulfurization. The optimal hierarchical Ti-Beta zeolite with a mesopore size of 7.8 nm and a high solid yield of more than 96% exhibited outstanding catalytic oxidation performance, far outperforming the hydrothermally synthesized Ti-Beta zeolite and postsynthesized Ti-Beta zeolite. This work provides a straightforward and facile methodology for rationally constructing the hierarchical Ti-Beta zeolite, which is promising to be an extension to synthesize other hierarchical heteroatom-containing zeolites without the assistance of a mesoporogen in a short time.

An amine-bifunctionalization strategy with Beta/KIT-6 composite as a support for CO2 adsorbent preparation

Yuan Yuan,Jianwen Wei,Linlin Geng,Dejun Mei,Lei Liao

An amine-bifunctionalized composite strategy was used to fabricate grafted-impregnated micro-/mesoporous composites for carbon dioxide capture. The micro-/mesoporous Beta/KIT-6 (BK) composite containing a high-silica zeolite with a three-dimensional twelve-membered ring crossing channel system and cubic structural silica was used as a support, and 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (APTS) and tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA) were used as the grafted and impregnated components, respectively. The amine efficiency, adsorption kinetics, thermal stability, regeneration performance, and the effects of impregnated amine loadings (30–60%) and temperatures (40–90 °C) on the CO2 adsorption performance were investigated using a thermal gravimetric analyzer (TGA) in the mixed gases (15 vol% CO2 and 85 vol% N2). At 60 °C, the bifunctionalized Beta/KIT-6 (1 mL APTS g−1 BK) displayed the highest CO2 adsorption capacity of 5.12 mmol g−1 at a TEPA loading of 50%. The kinetic model fitting results showed that the CO2 adsorption process was a combination of physical and chemical adsorption, wherein the chemical adsorption is dominant. After five adsorption/desorption cycle regenerations, the saturated adsorption capacity of the composite material was 4.86 mmol g−1, which was only 5.1% lower than the original adsorption capacity. The composites demonstrated excellent CO2 adsorption performance, indicating the promising future of these adsorbents for CO2 capture from actual flue gas after desulfurization.
