Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) and potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) have been considered as attractive alternatives for next-generation battery systems, which have promising application potential due to their earth abundance of potassium and sodium, high capacity and suitable working potential, however, the design and application of bi-functional high-performance anode still remain a great challenge up to date. Bismuth sulfide is suitable as anode owing to its unique laminar structure with relatively large interlayer distance to accommodate larger radius ions, high theoretical capacity and high volumetric capacity etc. In this study, dandelion-like Bi 2 S 3 /rGO hierarchical microspheres as anode material for PIBs displayed reversible capacity, and 206.91 mAh·g −1 could be remained after 1,200 cycles at a current density of 100 mA·g −1 . When applied as anode materials for SIBs, 300 mAh·g −1 could be retained after 300 cycles at 2 A·g −1 and its initial Coulombic efficiency is as high as 97.43%. Even at high current density of 10 A·g −1 , 120.3 mAh·g −1 could be preserved after 3,400 cycles. The Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 @rGO//Bi 2 S 3 /rGO sodium ion full cells were successfully assembled which displays stable performance after 60 cycles at 100 mA·g −1 . The above results demonstrate that Bi 2 S 3 /rGO has application potential as high performance bi-functional anode for PIBs and SIBs.

Inadequate separation of carriers is still major obstacles to the practical application of photocatalysis. The reasonable design of semiconductor photocatalysts is expected to break through this bottleneck. Herein, MoSe 2 @Bi 2 S 3 /CdS is designed by solvothermal-hydrothermal strategy. Thanks to the dual Z-Scheme heterojunction conforms to the characteristics of multi-channel charge transfer which favor the spatial separation of carriers. MoSe 2 @Bi 2 S 3 /CdS hollow structure increases the utilization rate of light source, the core-shell structure increases the interface area and the active sites. Moreover, full spectrum absorption endues MoSe 2 @Bi 2 S 3 /CdS with unpredictable photothermal effect, which can touch off near-field temperature rise to facilitate photocatalytic process. Profiting from the synergistic facilitation effect, MoSe 2 @Bi 2 S 3 /CdS exhibits excellent photocatalytic activity in the hydrogen evolution and pollutants removal of Cr (VI) and 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (TCP), which are up to 11.84 mmol/g/h, 98.7% and 99.2%, respectively. This dual functional MoSe 2 @Bi 2 S 3 /CdS photocatalyst may paves new opportunities for solving the energy crisis and environmental pollution.

Using a Z-scheme MoS 2 /rGO/Bi 2 S 3 loaded onto carbon felt (CF) as the anode and BiOBr as the cathode in a photocatalytic fuel cell (PFC) was found to be an efficient photocatalytic system for degrading water contaminants such as antibiotics. Some standard analytical techniques, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ultraviolet–visible spectrophotometry (UV–Vis DRS), ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS) and electrochemical analysis (cyclic voltammetry, CV and current-time curve, I-t ), were applied to characterize the diverse properties of the electrodes. First, two typical antibiotic contaminants, berberine chloride (BEC) and tetracycline hydrochloride (TC), were used to investigate the degradation ability of the electrodes. As expected, results showed that the degradation of TC and BEC using MoS 2 /rGO/Bi 2 S 3 @CF was consistently above 90%, whereas the degradation achieved by independently using rGO/Bi 2 S 3 @CF and rGO/MoS 2 @CF was consistently below 85% and as low as 53%; this verified the excellent formation of the heterojunction. In addition, to further investigate the performance of MoS 2 /rGO/Bi 2 S 3 @CF, the test results under different conditions were discussed, such as pH, electrochemical property, light reactivity, dark absorption and recyclability in depth. All results of MoS 2 /rGO/Bi 2 S 3 @CF demonstrated good performance than rGO/Bi 2 S 3 @CF and rGO/MoS 2 @CF. Based on the UV–Vis DRS, UPS, EPR and trapping agent experiment results, the electron generated and Z-scheme transport mechanism in the fuel cell was proposed. Moreover, electron transmission from MoS 2 /rGO/Bi 2 S 3 @CF to BiOBr@CF through an external circuit further suppressed the recombination of electron-hole pairs. This new catalytic pollution control route is expected to provide a new way for efficient pollutant degradation with low energy consumption.

The photoelectrochemical (PEC) self-powered system has attracted great attention in disease detection. The determination of a simple and efficient approach for disease-related biomarkers is highly interesting and appealing. Herein, an ingenious visible light-induced membraneless self-powered PEC biosensing platform was constructed, integrating a signal amplification strategy for ultrasensitive split-type PEC bioanalysis . The system was comprised of a Bi 2 S 3 /BiPO 4 heterojunction photoanode and a platinum (Pt) cathode in a one compartment chamber. An alkaline phosphatase (ALP)-loaded sandwich immunoassay was used to generate the signal reporter ascorbic acid (AA) in a 96-well plate, and myoglobin (Myo) was used as a model protein. In the presence of AA, ferrocene (Fc), and Tris (2-carboxyethyl) phosphine (TCEP), the chemical-chemical redox cycling scheme was operated upon the initial oxidation of Fc by the holes in the Bi 2 S 3 /BiPO 4 photoelectrode , and Fc was regenerated from Fc + by AA. Subsequently, AA was regenerated by TCEP after its oxidation, and cycling was triggered. As a result, the proposed self-powered PEC sensing exhibited excellent performance with a wide linear range from 5.0 × 10 −13 to 1.0 × 10 −7 g/mL, and a low detection limit of 2.0 × 10 −13 g/mL for Myo. This work provided a new design of a redox cycling strategy in the self-powered PEC biosensor, and showed an effective approach for the clinical diagnosis.

Gaseous therapy based on nitric oxide (NO) has emerged as a potential tumor therapy route. However, the development of a NO generator with precisely controlled NO releasing in the target site is still facing enormous challenges. Herein, a typical NO delivery platform by integrating the hollow structured polydopamine (PDA) coated Bi2S3 nanohybrids (denoted as H-Bi2S3@PDA) with a heat-sensitive S-nitrosothiol (RSNO) molecule was explored for near-infrared (NIR) light-responsive on-demand NO-releasing and synergetic gas/photothermal combination therapy of tumors. The designed H-Bi2S3@PDA nanocomposites hold high photothermal conversion efficiency of 46.13% under irradiation of a NIR laser, leading to NIR light-triggered controllable generation of NO gas via breaking the S–NO bonds of the heat-sensitive RSNO molecules. More importantly, synergistic gas/photothermal therapy of the tumor was also achieved, which presented remarkable inhibition growth and ablation of tumors. These findings provide the opportunity to design a NIR light-activated NO generator with a combination of photothermal materials and heat-sensitive molecules for integrative gas/photothermal therapy in deep tumors.

Recently, a combination of chemotherapy with photothermal therapy (PTT) has received great attention for the construction of a near infrared (NIR)-controlled drug-delivery system for synergistic treatment of cancer, ultimately resulting in the enhancement of the therapeutic efficacy of anticancer drugs. Here, we developed a novel system for synergistic cancer therapy based on bismuth sulfide (Bi2S3) nanoparticle-decorated graphene functionalized with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) (named PVP-rGO/Bi2S3). The as-prepared PVP-rGO/Bi2S3 nanocomposite has a high storage capacity for anticancer drugs (∼500% for doxorubicin (DOX)) and simultaneously has perfect photothermal conversion efficiency in the NIR region. The results of the in vitro accumulative drug release test manifests that the PVP-rGO/Bi2S3 nanocomposite could be applied as a dual pH- and NIR-responsive nanotherapeutic carrier for the controlled release of DOX from DOX-loaded PVP-rGO/Bi2S3 (PVP-rGO/Bi2S3@DOX). Moreover, the treatment of both cancer cells (including Hela, MCF-7, HepG2 and BEL-7402 cells) and BEL-7402 tumor-bearing mice with the PVP-rGO/Bi2S3@DOX complex followed by NIR laser irradiation produces significantly greater inhibition of cancer cell growth than the treatment with NIR irradiation alone or DOX alone, exhibiting a synergistic antitumor effect. Furthermore, due to the obvious NIR and X-ray absorption ability, the PVP-rGO/Bi2S3 nanocomposite could be employed as a dual-modal contrast agent for both photoacoustic tomography and X-ray computed tomography imaging. In addition to the good biocompatibility, the PVP-rGO/Bi2S3 nanocomposite paves a potential way for the fabrication of theranostic agents for dual-modal imaging-guided chemo-photothermal combined cancer therapy.

In this paper, novel photocatalyst Bi 2 S 3 /TiO 2 /RGO composites were successfully fabricated by a facile solvothermal method. During this process, TiO 2 was coupled with Bi 2 S 3 to generate Bi 2 S 3 sensitized TiO 2 nanoparticles, and graphene oxide (GO) was reduced to reduced graphene oxide (RGO), which was uniformly covered with plenty of Bi 2 S 3 and TiO 2 . The as-prepared samples were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), specific surface areas (BET), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), Raman, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV–vis DRS) and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. The results confirmed that Bi 2 S 3 could act as an optical filter, which could be activated under visible light. And the introduction of Bi 2 S 3 could improve the response of TiO 2 nanoparticles for visible light. In addition, the Bi 2 S 3 /TiO 2 in Bi 2 S 3 /TiO 2 /RGO composites had more uniform dispersion on the surface of graphene with less agglomeration in comparison with the Bi 2 S 3 /TiO 2 . Graphene can provide conductive electron channels for separation of the electrons and inhibit the recombination of electrons and holes. Furthermore, the photocatalytic activity of Bi 2 S 3 /TiO 2 /RGO composites was evaluated through the degradation of methylene blue (MB) under visible light irradiation. The Bi 2 S 3 /TiO 2 /RGO composites showed the highest photocatalytic activity among the referred photocatalysts, with about 3-fold increase in photocatalytic efficiency over TiO 2 nanoparticles. The mechanism of high photocatalytic activity was also discussed.

The OPECT biosensing platform, which connects optoelectronics and biological systems, offers significant amplification and more possibilities for research in biological applications. In this work, a homogeneous organic photoelectrochemical transistor (OPECT) biosensor based on a Bi2S3/Bi2MoO6 heterojunction was constructed to detect METTL3/METTL14 protein activity. The METTL3/METTL14 complex enzyme was used to catalyze adenine (A) on an RNA strand to m6A, protecting m6A-RNA from being cleaved by an E. coli toxin (MazF). Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) catalyzed the conversion of Na3SPO3 to H2S through an enzymatic reaction. Due to the adoption of the strategy of no fixation on the electrode, the generated H2S was easy to diffuse to the surface of the ITO electrode. The Bi2S3/Bi2MoO6 heterojunction was formed in situ through a chemical replacement reaction with Bi2MoO6, improving photoelectric conversion efficiency and realizing signal amplification. Based on this “signal on” mode, METTL3/METTL14 exhibited a wide linear range (0.00001–25 ng/μL) between protein concentration and photocurrent intensity with a limit of detection (LOD) of 7.8 fg/μL under optimal experimental conditions. The applicability of the developed method was evaluated by investigating the effect of four plasticizers on the activity of the METTL3/METTL14 protein, and the molecular modeling technique was employed to investigate the interaction between plasticizers and the protein.

Amine-based gases have become an important indicator for detecting the decay of seafood, especially during the transportation and storage process. Triethylamine (TEA) is continuously produced as a result of slow decay, therefore, detecting the release of TEA from the food spoilage to indirectly measure the freshness of seafood has become a crucial method. However, the current TEA sensors frequently encounter issues such as low sensitivity, poor selectivity, or the necessity for higher operating temperatures, all of which hinder their practical application in seafood quality detection. In our work, for the first time, the gas-sensitive response of Bi 2 S 3 to TEA at room temperature (25 ℃) was improved by the composite of ZnO nanoparticles. The response to 100 ppm TEA is 2.51, which is 3.7 times that of pure Bi 2 S 3. The response/recovery time is 49/270 s. The materials structure and composition were studied by the methods like XRD, SEM, XPS, FTIR, and TEM, and the surface area of the nanocomposites was 24.6 m 2 /g, which could provide more adsorption sites. Then a response mechanism was proposed based on those characterization results. Meanwhile, the experimental verification shows that the sensor have excellent selectivity, repeatability and stability. Finally, a TEA detection equipment was designed to effectively detect the TEA produced by decayed marine fish. This work reports the first example of fabrication Bi 2 S 3 /ZnO Nanocomposites for TEA Gas Sensors at room temperature, and thus it’s also the first report about the application of Bi 2 S 3 /ZnO gas sensor for food safety. The gathered results reveal great prospects of TEA gas sensors for the food quality monitoring during transportation and storage.

Background Photodynamic therapy (PDT) efficacy of bismuth sulfide (Bi 2 S 3 ) semiconductor has been severely restricted by its electron–hole pairs (e − −h + ) separation inefficiency and oxygen (O 2 ) deficiency in tumors, which greatly hinders reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and further clinical application of Bi 2 S 3 nanoparticles (NPs) in biomedicine. Results Herein, novel Bi 2 S 3 /titanium carbide (Ti 3 C 2 ) two-dimensional nano-heterostructures (NHs) are designed to realize multimode PDT of synchronous O 2 self-supply and ROS generation combined with highly efficient photothermal tumor elimination for hypoxic tumor therapy. Bi 2 S 3 /Ti 3 C 2 NHs were synthesized via the in situ synthesis method starting from Ti 3 C 2 nanosheets (NSs), a classical type of MXene nanostructure. Compared to simple Bi 2 S 3 NPs, Bi 2 S 3 /Ti 3 C 2 NHs significantly extend the absorption to the near-infrared (NIR) region and enhance the photocatalytic activity owing to the improved photogenerated carrier separation, where the hole on the valence band (VB) of Bi 2 S 3 can react with water to supply O 2 for the electron on the Ti 3 C 2 NSs to generate ·O 2 − and ·OH through electron transfer. Furthermore, they also achieve 1 O 2 generation through energy transfer due to O 2 self-supply. After the modification of triphenylphosphium bromide (TPP) on Bi 2 S 3 /Ti 3 C 2 NHs, systematic in vitro and in vivo evaluations were conducted, revealing that the synergistic-therapeutic outcome of this nanoplatform enables complete eradication of the U251 tumors without recurrence by NIR laser irradiation, and it can be used for computed tomography (CT) imaging because of the strong X-ray attenuation ability. Conclusion This work expands the phototherapeutic effect of Bi 2 S 3 -based nanoplatforms, providing a new strategy for hypoxic tumor theranostics.

Although various types of photothermal agents are developed for photothermal cancer therapy, relatively few photothermal agents exhibit high tumor inhibition rate under relatively mild conditions. Herein, a multifunctional Bi 2 S 3 –Tween 20 nanoplatform loaded with PI3K inhibitor LY294002 is designed as a novel photothermal agent for inhibitor and photothermal synergistic therapy of tumors under mild photothermal therapy conditions. The LY294002 of PI3K inhibitor, after being loaded by Bi 2 S 3 –Tween 20 nanodots, exhibits greatly increased drug utilization and reduced side effects on normal tissues. In vivo, Bi 2 S 3 –Tween 20@LY294002 upon near-infrared 808 nm laser irradiation shows potent antitumor activity under relatively mild conditions (power density: 0.6 W cm −2 ). Moreover, the mechanism studies also demonstrate that Bi 2 S 3 –Tween 20@LY294002 potently kills LoVo cancer cells under low-power near-infrared light irradiation, by downregulating the expression of heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) so as to increase the sensitivity of tumor cell hyperthermia and activating BAX/BAK-regulated mitochondrial apoptosis pathway. The results demonstrate that the newly synthesized multifunctional nanoplatform paves a new avenue for accurate therapy of photothermal-resistant cancer.

An effective approach to eliminating organic pollutants is to develop step-scheme (S-scheme) heterojunction photocatalysts, because such heterojunctions can effectively promote photogenerated carrier separation while maximally retaining strong redox capability. Herein, S-scheme Bi 2 S 3 /BiOI (BBS) photocatalysts were synthesized using the in situ ion exchange method. Morphology and structure of BBS, as well as its photoelectrochemical properties, among others, were studied and analyzed. The photocatalytic activity of BBS was evaluated by degrading formaldehyde (HCHO) and methyl orange (MO). Compared with BiOI and Bi 2 S 3 , BBS catalysts demonstrated a remarkable improvement in photocatalytic performance under irradiation with visible light ( λ > 400 nm). With the highest photocatalytic efficiency, BBS-0.01 achieved degradation rates of 80% for HCHO (0.16 mg L −1 ) in 90 min and 97% for MO in 210 min. This notable enhancement in photocatalytic performance is attributed to the in situ ion exchange method, which constructs heterojunctions with intimate interfacial contact, uniform component distribution, high carrier separation efficiency, abundant active sites, and excellent stability. Furthermore, the S-scheme heterostructure further enhances catalytic performance owing to its well-matched energy band structures, efficient carrier separation, and the combined effect with the internal electric field (IEF). In addition, BBS photocatalysts exhibit a stronger visible-light response capability, consequently enhancing the overall photocatalytic efficiency. Hence, the BBS heterojunction photocatalyst presented in this work is a highly promising material for environmental applications under visible light. Graphical
