For further development of light sources, white light-emitting diodes (wLEDs) have attracted widespread attention as promising next-generation light sources fabricated via the combination of phosphors and LED chips. However, latent defects, such as chemical/thermal instability, low color rendering index (CRI) and high correlated color temperature (CCT), of current mainstream wLEDs seriously hinder their further large-scale implementation. Herein, in order to overcome these limitations, single-phase color-tunable gaudefroyite (Ca3Y(GaO)3(BO3)4 (CYGB)) tridoped with Bi3+/Tb3+/Eu3+ ions was synthesized for the first time and detailed characterisation was performed via high-temperature solid-state reaction and structural/spectral analyses, respectively. Radius difference percentage calculations and Rietveld refinements indicate that dopants occupy both Y3+ and Ca2+ sites but preferably the Y3+ site over the Ca2+ site due to the same valence state. Through subtly regulating the (co)doping contents and skillfully utilizing the energy transfer (ET) strategy from the allowed transition of blue light-emitting Bi to the forbidden transition of green/red light-emitting Tb/Eu, the color hue (including white light) of highly efficient PL can be easily tuned according to the need. Meanwhile, composition/content-optimized white light-emitting CYGB:2%Bi/10%Tb/12%Eu also shows splendid chemical/thermal stability. Finally, as a proof-of-concept experiment, the CYGB:2%Bi/10%Tb/12%Eu phosphor-converted wLED (pc-wLED) was fabricated and encapsulated via the up-to-date remote ‘capping’ method, which imparted attractive performances. Altogether, the stable CYGB:Bi/Tb/Eu phosphor is a promising candidate for application in lighting/display fields.

A series of Ca 2 Gd 1-x-y Zr 2 Al 3 O 12 :xBi 3+ ,yTb 3+ phosphors have been successfully synthesized. • The anti-thermal quenching behavior of Tb 3+ ions was attributed to the synergistic effect of electron-phonon coupling and crystal field. • A dual-pathway FIR thermometer has been developed that achieves high sensitivity over a broad temperature range. • Optical materials were fabricated for optical fiber temperature detection platform and anti-counterfeiting label. Developing fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) thermometers with low cost, high sensitivity and wide measurement range is a key bottleneck in this field, which poses severe challenges to conventional thermosensitive materials. Herein, a series of Ca 2 GdZr 2 Al 3 O 12 :Bi 3+ ,Tb 3+ phosphors with multi-excitation pathways were fabricated, and anti-thermal quenching (ATQ) behavior was attributed to the synergistic effect of electron-phonon coupling and crystal field, boosting the sensitivity and temperature detection range of fluorescent thermometers. Among them, under the excitation pathway where both Bi 3+ and Tb 3+ ions exhibit typical TQ behaviors, the FIR 309 thermometer achieves a maximum S r 309 value of 1.46% K −1 (at 353 K), thereby exhibiting excellent temperature sensing performance in the range of 293–433 K. In contrast, for the excitation pathway where the ATQ behavior of Tb 3+ ions is realized via the synergistic effect of electron-phonon coupling and crystal field, the S r 322 value of the FIR 322 optical thermometer increases to 2.05% K −1 , and shifts the high-sensitivity detection range to 413–573 K. Notably, the combined temperature detection range (293–573 K) of the FIR 309 and FIR 322 thermometers is two times that of the single FIR 309 thermometer. Moreover, the multi-pathway FIR optical thermometer exhibits outstanding temperature measurement performance on the optical fiber temperature detection platform. These promising findings offers a new perspective for developing optical thermometer with exceptional performance. Download: Download high-res image (85KB) Download: Download full-size image

It is challenging to rational design persistent luminescence and storage phosphors with high storage capacity of electrons and holes after X-ray charging. Such phosphors have potential applications in anti-counterfeiting and X-ray imaging. Here we have combined vacuum referred binding energy diagram (VRBE) construction, photoluminescence spectroscopy, and thermoluminescence to study the trapping processes of charge carriers in NaYGeO 4 . In NaYGeO 4 :0.004Bi 3+ and NaYGeO 4 :0.004Bi 3+ ,0.005Ln 3+ (Ln = Tb or Pr), Bi 3+ appears to act as a shallow electron trap, while Bi 3+ and Ln 3+ act as deep hole trapping and recombination centres. We will show how to experimentally determine the VRBE in the Bi 2+ 2 P 1/2 ground state in NaYGeO 4 and NaLuGeO 4 by thermoluminescence study. The electron trap depth produced by Bi 3+ codopant in NaLu 1-x Y x GeO 4 :0.003Bi 3+ ,0.008 Tb 3+ can be adjusted, by increasing x, resulting in conduction band engineering. By combining Bi 3+ as an electron trap and Bi 3+ and Tb 3+ as the hole traps, excellent X-ray charged afterglow phosphors were developed. The integrated TL intensity of the optimized NaYGeO 4 :0.004Bi 3+ and NaYGeO 4 :0.003Bi 3+ ,0.008Tb 3+ after exposure to X-rays is about 4.5 and 1.1 times higher than that of the state-of-the-art BaFBr(I):Eu 2+ storage phosphor. Intense initial Tb 3+ 4f → 4f afterglow appears in NaYGeO 4 :0.003Bi 3+ ,0.008Tb 3+ and more than 40 h afterglow is measurable in NaYGeO 4 :0.004Bi 3+ and NaYGeO 4 :0.003Bi 3+ , 0.008 Tb 3+ after X-ray charging. We will show proof-of-concept anti-counterfeiting and X-ray imaging applications by using the developed afterglow phosphors and CsPbI 3 quantum dots. This work not only provides experimental evidence on the VRBE in the Bi 2+ 2 P 1/2 ground state in NaYGeO 4 , but also shows how to design and develop good afterglow phosphors for anti-counterfeiting and X-ray imaging by deeply studying and controlling the trapping processes of charge carriers in bismuth and/or lanthanides doped inorganic compounds.

A series of Bi 3+ /Eu 3+ co-doped Ba 3 Y(BO 3 ) 3 red-emitting phosphors were successfully prepared by the combustion method. The crystal structure and photoluminescence properties of the as-prepared phosphors were investigated by X-ray powder diffraction, photoluminescence excitation and emission spectra . In this paper, the Bi 3+ ion was employed as a sensitizer to improve the red emission intensity of Eu 3+ . The optimal doping concentration of Bi 3+ was 1 mol%. The observed excitation broad bands centered at 300 nm confirmed Bi 3+ ion doped into the Ba 3 Y(BO 3 ) 3 host. The red emission intensity of Eu 3+ was significantly enhanced by doping a small amount of Bi 3+ . Furthermore, Bi 3+ /Eu 3+ co-doped phosphor possessed admirable thermal stability (the emission intensity of studied phosphor at 423 K maintained 80.7% of the initial intensity at room temperature). The results manifest that Bi 3+ ion is an efficient sensitizer for Eu 3+ ion and Ba 3 Y(BO 3 ) 3 : 24 mol% Eu 3+ , 1 mol% Bi 3+ phosphors possess a great potential for applications in white LEDs.

Fluorescent materials are widely used for anti-counterfeiting of information security and commodities. However, the increasing requirements for fluorescent anti-counterfeiting technology urgently require the development of novel fluorescent materials with multicolor fluorescence, single component, and excellent stability. Herein, a color tunable Ba 0·94 Ca 0.06 ScO 2 F: Eu 2+ , Bi 3+ , K + perovskite with dependence of excitation wavelength for high-level anti-counterfeiting is reported. The fluorescence spectra of Ba 0·94 Ca 0.06 ScO 2 F: Eu 2+ , Bi 3+ , K + perovskite show the tunable emission band with the peak between 479 and 509 nm. It is worth noting that the peak intensity ratio at 479 and 509 nm changes with the dependence of the excitation wavelength. Meanwhile, the snowflake pattern is designed to demonstrate the potential applications in anti-counterfeiting, which obviously shows four different color patterns under the sunlight, 320 360, and 415 nm excitation, respectively.

Inorganic phosphors with tunable broadband emission hold significant applications in solid-state lighting. Herein, a series of novel Sr 3 YGa 2 O 7.5 : Bi 3+ , Eu 3+ (abbreviated as SYGO: Bi 3+ , Eu 3+ ) phosphors with tunable optical properties were synthesized by high-temperature solid-state reaction process. The photoluminescence excitation (PLE) spectrum of Sr 3 YGa 2 O 7.5 : Bi 3+ ranges from 200 to 400 nm with two peaks at 280 and 331 nm, matching well with the n-UV chip based white light-emitting diodes (WLED). Under ultraviolet light excitation, a single Bi 3+ -doped Sr 3 YGa 2 O 7.5 phosphor exhibited five distinct luminescence peaks at 410, 510, 560, 605, and 700 nm at 10 K, which are attributed to the 3 P 1 → 1 S 0 transition emissions of Bi 3+ ions occupying the four Sr sites and one Y site within the Sr 3 YGa 2 O 7.5 host lattice . The optical tuning of the Sr 3 YGa 2 O 7.5 : Bi 3+ phosphor is achieved by designing the Bi 3+ →Eu 3+ energy transfer and changing the excitation wavelength based on the selected site occupation. The Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates and emission color of the Sr 3 YGa 2 O 7.5 : Bi 3+ , Eu 3+ phosphors were successfully tuned from blue via white to red. The energy transfer efficiency from Bi 3+ to Eu 3+ can reach as high as 89.54 %, and this energy transfer process is predominantly governed by the dipole-quadrupole interaction. In addition, the white LED device prepared by combination of SYGO: 0.02Bi 3+ , 0.03Eu 3+ phosphors with 365 nm chip has high color rendering index (CRI) of 85.5 and low correlated color temperature of 3537 K. As the driving current increases, the white light emitting diodes (WLED) device demonstrates good color stability. Based on these findings, the synthesized SYGO: Bi 3+ , Eu 3+ phosphors can serve as color-tunable and single-phase white phosphors with potential applications in UV-excited white LEDs.

In the field of luminescent materials, the search for good substrates and the use of a single substrate to excite near-ultraviolet chips to produce white LED devices has always been of great interest. This study utilized energy transfer between Bi 3+ and Eu 3+ to design KAlSiO 4 : 0.02Bi 3+ , 0.04Eu 3+ red emission phosphors with a potassium nepheline structure, which were calcined in air with a high-temperature solid-state method. Under 286 nm excitation, energy transfer between Bi 3+ and Eu 3+ up to 85.9 %. Through DFT theoretical calculations, it was found that the bandgap of the matrix was 4.86 eV, KAlSiO 4 : 0.02Bi 3+ , 0.04Eu 3+ has excellent heat quenching resistance, and the emission intensity at 150 °C is 92.9 % of that seen at room temperature . Second, by doping with Eu 2 O 3 and calcining in a reducing atmosphere, KAlSiO 4 : 0.02Eu 2+ , 0.1Li + broadband blue emitting phosphors were obtained. Finally, KAlSiO 4 : 0.02Bi 3+ , 0.04Eu 3+ was mixed with KAlSiO 4 : 0.02Eu 2+ , 0.1Li + to prepare a near-ultraviolet white LED device. The color rendering index of the device reached 87.1, the color coordinates were (0.3328, 0.3015), and the color temperature was 5422 K. These results proved that KAlSiO 4 : 0.02Bi 3+ , 0.04Eu 3+ samples have potential for use in near-ultraviolet white LEDs and that KAlSiO 4 is a good substrate in the field of luminescence. This work provides a new breakthrough in the use of a single substrate to prepare multiple colored fluorescent powders and mix them together to produce white LED devices.

High-performance white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) used for backlighting display applications require innovative and thermally stable narrow-band emission phosphors, particularly non-rare-earth Bi 3+ -activated phosphors. In this study, we demonstrate a defect-engineering strategy to create novel anti-thermal quenching phosphors Ca 3 Sc 2 Si 3 O 12 : x Bi 3+ (CSSO: x Bi 3+ ). Through structure refinement of CSSO: 0.06Bi 3+ phosphor, we found that Bi occupies both Ca and Sc sites in the CSSO lattice. Direct visualization of atomic-resolution TEM and thermoluminescence spectra confirmed the formation of point defects due to the non-equivalent substitution of Ca 2+ for Bi 3+ . Fluorescent-decay analysis revealed that two luminescence sites contribute to the blue-emitting of CSSO:Bi 3+ phosphors. CSSO: 0.06Bi 3+ phosphor exhibits outstanding thermal stability, with an integrated emission intensity of 103.6% at 423 K compared to that at 298 K. However, the addition of Li or Na as charge compensators reduced cationic defects, leading to a decrease in thermal stability. We believe that V C a ″ defects are primarily responsible for the anti-thermal quenching behavior of CSSO: x Bi 3+ phosphors. An optimized CSSO: 0.06Bi 3+ phosphor-based WLED displays a high color rendering index (CRI) of 90 and a wide color gamut (90% National Television System Committee (NTSC) standard), indicating its potential for use in industrial applications as a backlighting display.

In this study, Bi 3+ and Mn 4+ co-doped CaAl 12 O 19 phosphors were prepared via high-temperature solid-state reaction method, and their crystal structure, particle morphologies, luminescence properties, charge compensation mechanism and crystal field effect were investigated in detail. A most remarkable tuning effect can be achieved when the Bi 3+ concentration is 5% in CaAl 12 O 19 :Bi 3+ , 0.05% Mn 4+ and the electric multipolar interaction is inferred to be the main mechanism for concentration quenching effect. It is also found that, as charge compensators rather than sensitizers, Bi 3+ ions can effectively tailor the emissions in a wide range through partial reducing Mn 4+ to Mn 2+ . The charge compensation physics presumably involves the shift of Fermi energy level ( E F ) and variations of valence states of manganese ions after Bi 3+ introduction. Moreover, the authors calculated the splitting energy (Δ) and Racah parameters ( B and C ) for Mn 4+ in octahedral sites and Mn 2+ in tetrahedral sites by combining excitation spectra with Tanabe-Sugano diagram. The experimental results will be of certain helpfulness in developing phosphors used in white LED.

In this paper, novel Bi3+/Eu3+ co-doped white-emitting germanium-borate glasses were successfully prepared by the melt-quenching method. Their luminescent properties were evaluated using the transmission spectra, photoluminescence excitation, and emission spectra (with a temperature range of 298-573 K), and lifetime decay curves. Due to the efficient energy transfer from Bi3+ to Eu3+, tunable emitting color between the bluish-green and the orange-red region has been obtained by varying the content of Eu3+ (0-7%). Interestingly, a perfect white-light emission with CIE coordinates (X = 0.356, Y = 0.325) is realized upon the excitation at 345 nm light in the Bi3+/Eu3+ co-doped sample. More remarkably, the white-light emission glass maintains excellent color stability even at 423 K. Our results indicate that the Bi3+/Eu3+ co-doped germanium-borate glasses may be used as a potential single-phased white light-emitting matrix material for the UV converted organic-resin-free WLEDs in the future.

Exploring efficient strategies to enhance persistent luminescence (PersL) is highly demanded to facilitate advanced applications of inorganic PersL phosphors. In this work, a remarkable enhancement of Mn 2+ PersL in LiYGeO 4 (LYGO) with tunable wavelengths is achieved through Bi 3+ codoping. The Mn 2+ emission can be tuned from 600 to 664 nm by increasing the doping concentration, attributed to site-selective occupation of different crystallographic sites. The pronounced enhancement in the PersL of Mn 2+ is achieved through the synergistic interplay of energy transfer from Bi 3+ to Mn 2+ and electron-capture competition between the two hole-trapped ions. Specifically, the PersL intensity of LYGO:0.5%Mn 2+ ,0.125%Bi 3+ at 30 s increased by 444 times compared to that of LYGO:0.5%Mn 2+ after 254 nm excitation. Thermoluminescence measurement reveals that introduction of Bi 3+ creates an additional trap center with depth of 0.60 eV. Moreover, LYGO:Mn 2+ ,Bi 3+ exhibits excellent water resistance and shows great potential for applications in information storage and X-ray detection. This work not only demonstrates an intense red PersL phosphor, but also provides an efficient strategy to enhance PersL in inorganic materials via energy transfer and electron-capture competition.

Lead-free organic–inorganic hybrid metal halides (OIHMHs) provide an ideal platform for designing multifunctional photonic materials owing to their flexible structure and tunable excited-state dynamics. Herein, excitation-dependent and color-tunable luminescence was achieved in zero-dimensional TEA 2 InCl 5 :Bi 3+ /Sb 3+ , where the coexistence of Bi 3+ - and Sb 3+ -related emissive centers (EM1–EM3) enables broadband emission spanning from blue to orange-red. The phosphor exhibits an impressive PLQY of 55.21 % and remarkable spectral tunability driven by excitation wavelength or dopant ratio modulation. More importantly, the Bi 3+ -related emission demonstrates strong thermal sensitivity of lifetime, yielding a maximum relative sensitivity of 4.76 % K −1 from 90 to 340 K. The thermally activated nonradiative relaxation of self-trapped excitons (STEs) governs this lifetime-dependent optical thermometry behavior. The excitation-dependent color-tunable behavior of the material enabled the realization of multi-level optical anti-counterfeiting patterns. This study provides new insight into excited-state coupling in Bi 3+ /Sb 3+ co-doped OIHMHs and offers a promising route toward high-performance luminescent systems integrating temperature sensing and information security.
