Titanium microspheres served a dual role in this study. First, they acted as supporting materials for TiO 2 /BiOBr photocatalysts. Second, they provided a low-cost precursor for titanium dioxide preparation. The growth of core-shell structured Ti@TiO 2 microspheres was realized using a hydrothermal method in NaOH solution. By varying the concentration of NaOH solution, TiO 2 nanowires with different morphologies were fabricated. A comprehensive characterization of the samples using field-emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction measurements, and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis revealed that TiO 2 nanostructures formed a well-coated layer on titanium microspheres, demonstrating an anatase crystal structure. The photocatalytic performance of the obtained core-shell structured Ti@TiO 2 microspheres was studied through the photocatalytic degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) solution. The results demonstrated that the sample prepared in NaOH solution with the concentration of 7 M exhibited the best photocatalytic performance, achieving an RhB removal efficiency of nearly 100% within 100 min under simulated light irradiation. In order to further improve the photocatalytic performance of the prepared samples, BiOBr was loaded on the surface of TiO 2 nanowires via a solvothermal method, yielding core-shell structured Ti@TiO 2 /BiOBr heterojunction photocatalysts, consisting of a metallic Ti core and a composite TiO₂/BiOBr shell. The catalysts demonstrated a significant enhancement in photocatalytic performance compared with core-shell structured Ti@TiO 2 microspheres, achieving nearly complete degradation of RhB solutions within 30 min. Furthermore, the photocatalyst maintained 91.92% of its activity after three consecutive cycles.

Type II heterojunction photocatalysts were fabricated by compositing BiOBr with TiO 2 , with samples labeled BiOBr/TiO 2 -1 to BiOBr/TiO 2 -5 (the number denotes the mass of TiO 2 in mg used during synthesis). Among these, BiOBr/TiO 2 -2 (containing 100 mg TiO 2 ) exhibited optimal visible-light photocatalytic performance for oxytetracycline hydrochloride (OTC) degradation, achieving 94.38 % removal within 60 min. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) confirmed successful composite formation through the observation of dual lattice spacings (0.28 nm for BiOBr (1 1 0) and 0.35 nm for TiO 2 ). This composite displayed a superior degradation rate constant of 0.04757 min −1 , exceeding those of pristine BiOBr and TiO 2 by factors of 2 and 14, respectively. The enhanced activity was attributed to effective charge separation enabled by the Type II heterojunction structure. Radical trapping experiments combined with electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis identified photogenerated holes (h + ) and superoxide radicals (•O 2 − ) as the dominant reactive species. HPLC–MS analysis revealed degradation intermediates, and toxicity assessment predicted progressive detoxification during the process. This study demonstrated that BiOBr/TiO 2 -2 is a stable and efficient photocatalyst with significant potential for antibiotic wastewater treatment.

Arsenic (As) contamination in water remains a serious concern due to its high toxicity and harmful effects on human health and the environment. Herein, we successfully synthesized a novel photocatalyst (BiOBr/Ti3C2) by in situ inserting BiOBr nanoparticles into Ti3C2Tx MXenes for the photocatalytic degradation of organic arsenic roxarsone (3-nitro-4-hydroxyphenylarsonic acid) in wastewater. BiOBr/Ti3C2 exhibited a unique morphology characterized by uniform BiOBr nanoparticles within more dispersed Ti3C2Tx layers. Heterojunctions were formed between Ti3C2Tx and BiOBr, which were conducive to photogenerated charge separation and electron transfer in Ti3C2Tx layers. An optimal BiOBr/Ti3C2 photocatalyst achieved a removal efficiency of 1.27 mg gcat.−1 h−1 for 2 mg L−1 of roxarsone wastewater within 0.5 h and a higher removal rate (about 1.5 times at 3 h) than pure Ti3C2Tx. In addition, BiOBr/Ti3C2 exhibited an apparent quantum yield (AQY) of 29.5% and good reusability for 4 cycles. The enhanced photocatalytic performance was mainly attributed to the intercalation of BiOBr nanoparticles within Ti3C2Tx layers, which increased reaction space and improved the separation and transport of photocarriers. Holes (h+) and ˙OH in the valence band (VB) of BiOBr/Ti3C2 were involved in the main route of roxarsone oxidative mineralization. The present BiOBr/Ti3C2 system provides fundamentals for the sustainable photocatalytic treatment of wastewater containing organic arsenic.

The photocatalytic reduction of CO 2 to CO is often constrained by suboptimal visible-light harvesting, interfacial recombination losses, and durability under repeated cycling. Here we design a Bi–BiOBr@CNF architecture that integrates metallic Bi (for plasmon-assisted excitation and interfacial electron transfer), oxygen/bromine vacancies (for CO 2 adsorption/activation), and a conductive CNF network (for dispersion and transport). Photoelectrochemical characterizations elucidate the synergistic mechanism. Under visible light, the catalyst delivers CO as the single detectable product with high selectivity; cycling tests reveal performance decay that is mechanistically linked to defect evolution, and a moderate-temperature regeneration restores activity. The results elucidate the respective roles of Bi 0 , O V , Br V , and the CNF scaffold within an integrated mechanistic framework, and indicate a viable strategy for durable photocatalytic reduction of CO 2 to CO.

Developing green water disinfection technology has been attracting much attention all over the world. In this work, a WO3/BiOBr@Si composite was obtained through the solvothermal process, which exhibited denser and fuller intersecting petal-like spheres (1–3 μm in diameter) and retained its 3D sheet-like pore structure. The optical and electrochemical analysis demonstrated that the doped Si showed insignificant improvement in UV-Vis light absorption but greatly promoted the electron-hole separation efficiency and charge transfer capability on the surface of the catalyst at a 4.6 wt% Si doping dosage, resulting in an excellent performance in the inactivation ofEscherichia coli(E. coli) under the irradiation of visible light. Under the optimal conditions (0.5 g/L of WO3/BiOBr@Si dosage, 107CFU mL−1ofE. coliconcertation, and 30 min of treating time), the largest log value decline (6.6) occurred with WO3/BiOBr@1.0Si, which was 3.3 and 1.8 times larger than those of BiOBr (2.0) and WO3/BiOBr (3.7). According to the TEM, SEM, EDS, XRD, FTIR, and XPS analyses, in the photocatalytic system, the hole (h+) and •OH were the main species for inactivatingE. colicells. These oxidizing species could attack the components on the surface of cells (such as the hydroxyl, carbonyl, ester, and amide groups of polysaccharides (PS) and proteins (PT)), resulting in the inactivation and destruction of the cell membranes and leakage of intracellular substances. The findings will provide a significant guide for developing an efficient catalyst for the green water disinfection process.

In this paper, hierarchical nanostructures of BiOBr/AgBr on electrospun carbon nanofibers (CNFs) were prepared by combination of electrospinning and carbonization. Compared with the smooth surface of CNFs, the rough surface with hierarchical nanostructures of BiOBr/AgBr can be obtained by adding the certain amount of BiOBr/AgBr precursors into the spinning solution. The as-prepared composite CNFs exhibited highly photocatalytic activities for degradation of rhodamine-B and reduction of p-nitrophenol under the visible-light irradiation and at room temperature. Furthermore, the as-prepared composite CNFs showed the favor separation, recovery, and cyclic utilization properties.

Abstract There is an urgent need to explore alternatives to replace traditional carbonaceous materials because of dwindling oil reserves and increasing atomospheric carbon dioxide. In the present study, the cellulose derived carbon nanofibers (CCNF) were prepared and used to hybridize with bismuth oxybromide to prepare novel photocatalyst composites (CCNF/BiOBr). The structural properties of the prepared composites were then characterized. Afterwards, the photocatalytic performance of the CCNF/BiOBr composites was investigated through degrading rhodamine B (RhB) under continuous visible light irradiation. The results indicated that the pyrolysis process could convert the cellulose to carbon nanofiber with high graphitization degree. The photocatalytic performance of the CCNF/BiOBr composite was better than that of the pure BiOBr, which was ascribed to the introduction of the CCNF into the composite system. The present work provides a promising way to design new photocatalyst composites with desirable carbon alternatives from biomass materials for effective treatment of organic contaminants in water media. Constructing step-scheme (S-scheme) heterojunctions has become a popular strategy for efficient photocatalytic H 2 O 2 generation. Herein, we in situ grew BiOBr nanosheets (NSs) on a Schiff-base covalent organic framework (COF) with large π-conjugated structures to prepare S-scheme BiOBr/COF photocatalysts for H 2 O 2 synthesis. The highest photocatalytic H 2 O 2 production performance of the composite sample constituting the S-scheme heterojunction is 3749 µmol g −1 h −1 , which was 1.85 and 27 times the rates of COF and BiOBr, respectively. The construction of S-scheme heterojunction contributed to efficient carrier transfer and separation in space and enhanced redox power. Moreover, the lying-down O 2 -adsorption configuration on the COF surface favors the concerted two-electron O 2 reduction process, which greatly reduced the reduction potential requirement for O 2 -to-H 2 O 2 conversion. The synergy between the S-scheme heterojunction and the unique O 2 –COF interaction boosted photocatalytic H 2 O 2 production activity.

Photocatalytic reduction of CO 2 into valuable resources presents an efficient solution to mitigate the energy crisis and effects of climate change . However, the low efficiency of photocatalytic CO 2 reduction of photocatalysts under visible light irradiation limits their industrial applications. Bismuth oxybromide (BiOBr) is a typical visible-light-driven photocatalyst with an appropriate band gap, but the charge separation efficiency still needs to be improved. In this work, the Au-doped BiOBr nanosheets with enhanced electrochemical characteristics were successfully synthesized through a simple one-step hydrothermal procedure. After Au-doping modification, the charge separation efficiency of BOB-Au-I sample were measured as 2.5 times than that of BiOBr nanosheets. And the BOB-Au-I samples exhibited an outstanding photocatalytic capacity for converting CO 2 to CO with a yield rate of approximately four times higher than that of BOB nanosheets under visible light irradiation. Furthermore, the mechanism of CO 2 reduction was elucidated through in situ Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. This study provides a facile method for achieving Au-doping modification of BiOBr nanosheets for efficient reduction of CO 2 .

Levofloxacin is an emerging contaminant that threatens the aquatic organisms and human health. Bi 2 WO 6 -based heterojunction materials exhibit positive photocatalytic degradation activity under visible light with highly stable hierarchical nanostructures for levofloxacin remediation. However, recycling in practical applications is challenging. Herein, a hybrid nanofibrous film comprising BiOBr nanoplates on a layered Bi 2 WO 6 nanofiber was successfully synthesized using electrospinning, a solvothermal method, and successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR). The size and quantity of BiOBr nanoplates grown on the fibers are controlled by adjusting the number of SILAR cycles. The BiOBr nanostructure obtained on the surface of the nanofibers controlled the photocatalytic activity of the sample. The resulting film exhibited superior degradation efficiency toward levofloxacin under visible-light irradiation due to its solid heterostructure, large specific surface area, high porosity, and enhanced visible-light response. The degradation efficiency of levofloxacin reached 95.25% after the system was exposed to visible light for 120 min, and five cyclic experiments demonstrated its excellent stability and reuesability. The Bi 2 WO 6 /BiOBr/polyacrylonitrile nanofibrous film provides a new strategy for developing high-tech equipment and other applications in environmental remediation.

In this study, a facile in-situ sonochemical synthesis process is developed to construct nitrogen-doped graphyne/BiOBr composites. Multiple techniques are implemented to characterize the structures, morphologies, electronic and optical properties, and photocatalytic activity of the as-prepared samples, including X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Raman, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, etc. The results indicate that the wrinkle-like layer structure of N-graphyne enwinds around the sheet structure of BiOBr. Compared to pristine BiOBr, N-graphyne/BiOBr composites present superior visible-light response, higher specific surface area, and more significant separation of photoinduced charge carriers verified by Brunauer-Emmett-Teller, UV–vis absorption spectroscopy, instantaneous photocurrent, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and photoluminescence, thus presenting more pronounced visible-light photocatalytic properties on N 2 fixation and decomposition of pollutants. The optimal ratio of N-graphyne in N-graphyne/BiOBr composites is screened out for the photocatalytic decomposition of rhodamine B, levofloxacin, methylene blue, and nitrogen fixation under visible light illumination. Furthermore, the main active species are demonstrated as hole and O 2 – during photocatalytic degradation and the stable performance of is also observed for N-graphyne/BiOBr composites. The present research demonstrates that N-graphyne embellishment is an effective strategy to enhance the photocatalytic efficiency of BiOBr, which can be broadened as an excellent co-catalyst for decoration of other semiconductors.

BiOBr is a kind of promising photocatalyst because of excellent photoelectric separation efficiency and chemical stability. In order to improving practical application performance, a novel BiOBr ultra-thin nano-roundel (BiOBr-nR) was constructed in water-in-oil (WIO) emulsion microspheres , and prepared by hydrothermal reaction . Its specific surface area was increased by changing microtopography and downsizing. After being characterized by FT-IR, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectra (UV–Vis DRS) and photoluminescence (PL), it indicated the BiOBr-nR, being doped by C and N, is 4–5 times smaller and thinner than that of conventional BiOBr. It was also found that BiOBr-nR has narrower band gap energy (2.78 eV), excellent photocatalytic activity , significant reusability , and stability. The obtained BiOBr-nR photocatalysts were applied to remove organics. It presented excellent photocatalytic activity, the degradation rate of organics got to 99.2%. The mechanism of photodegradation was investigated, which indicated superoxide radicals and holes play a major role in the degradation of organics. Therefore, BiOBr-nR is a kind of environmentally friendly photocatalyst with stable photocatalytic activity, the removal rate still more than 97% after recycling for 10 times. In summary, we found a novel insight for designing and preparation of efficient and recyclable BiOBr photocatalytic materials, which exhibits high photoresponse for purifying the wastewater.
