This study reports the construction of a g-C₃N₄/ZnTiO₃/BiOI ternary heterojunction photocatalyst for the efficient degradation of organic dyes. The optimized g-C₃N₄/ZnTiO₃/BiOI composite with a mass ratio of 1:1:2 exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity toward Rhodamine B (RhB), achieving nearly complete degradation within 40 min at pH 11, with an apparent rate constant of 0.05114 min⁻¹ . The composite also showed photocatalytic degradation ability toward methylene blue (MB) and methyl orange (MO), as well as satisfactory performance in different real water matrices, demonstrating its broader applicability. Structural and surface analyses confirmed the successful formation of the ternary composite, while BET results indicated that the retained mesoporous structure facilitated reactant diffusion and interfacial mass transfer. UV–vis DRS revealed an extended light absorption range beyond 600 nm, and photoelectrochemical measurements demonstrated reduced charge-transfer resistance and enhanced separation and migration of photogenerated carriers. Radical trapping and EPR analyses identified ¹O₂ and •OH as the dominant reactive species. After five cycles, the RhB degradation efficiency remained above 90%, indicating good stability. Combined with Mott–Schottky measurements, XPS analysis, work-function calculations, Bader charge analysis, and differential charge density results, a ZnTiO₃-mediated dual S-scheme charge-transfer mechanism was proposed. This work provides a feasible strategy for designing efficient ternary heterojunction photocatalysts for dye-contaminated wastewater treatment.

A Yb3+-doped BiOI 3D nanosheet array composite was successfully fabricated through a solvothermal deposition strategy on flexible carbon cloth (CC). This composite was subsequently integrated with high-chlorine fly ash (FA) blocks to form the Yb-BiOI/CC/FA hybrid material. Comprehensive characterization was performed using multiple analytical techniques for crystalline phase identification, morphological analysis, valence state, band structure evaluation, and charge carrier separation assessment. Electrochemical measurements were conducted to evaluate the material’s electronic properties. Experimental results demonstrated superior photocatalytic performance under visible light irradiation, with the Yb-BiOI/CC/FA composite achieving 52.87% methylene blue degradation efficiency. The reaction rate constant of this modified nanomaterial was approximately 2.1 times higher than that of pristine BiOI/CC/FA. Radical trapping experiments revealed that superoxide radicals (·O2−) served as the predominant oxidative species. This study presents a dual-benefit strategy for environmental remediation by simultaneously achieving sustainable waste valorization of industrial byproducts (FA) and developing high-efficiency photocatalytic materials. The successful integration of rare-earth metal modification with substrate engineering provides valuable insights for designing advanced photocatalytic systems for pollutant degradation.

The continuous increase of heavy metal pollution has seriously affected the ecological environment and human health, and photocatalysis technology is considered to be one of the most effective and environmentally friendly treatment methods. Herein, BiOI/Bi 2 S 3 Z-scheme heterostructure photocatalyst with abundant oxygen vacancies was fabricated and applied for the removal of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)). The tightly contact interface of in situ heterostructure and abundant oxygen vacancies can accelerate charge transport and improve the photogenerated carrier separation efficiency. The unique charge transmission path of the Z-scheme heterostructure endows the material with superior redox ability. BiOI/Bi 2 S 3 with optimized ratio can achieve effective reduction of Cr(VI) with the efficiency of 95.6 % under 10 min visible light illumination This work offers a promising photocatalyst for promoting the disposal of chromium-containing wastewater.

I-deficient nanoplatelet bismuth oxyiodide (BiOI) microflowers were successfully synthesized via a one-pot solvothermal method using NaOH. Results demonstrated that OH– played a key role in regulating the morphology, pore structure, and energy band structure of the prepared samples. As the volume of NaOH increased, the size of the BiOI microflowers gradually decreased, and the specific surface area and pore volume increased, providing more accessible active sites for photocatalytic reactions. Additionally, some iodine atoms in B-7 (i.e., 7 mL of a 1.0 M NaOH solution was added during the synthesis process) were replaced by hydroxide ions, affording B-7 with slight defects. The loss of iodine atoms shifted the valence band maximum (VBM) from 1.372 eV for the pristine BiOI (B-0) to 1.596 eV for I-deficient BiOI (B-7). The lowered VBM provides more oxidative holes, which is favorable for the oxidation reaction. The photocatalytic activities of the prepared samples were evaluated via the photodegradation of various organic pollutants, such as methyl orange, Rhodamine B, and phenol, under visible light. Owing to the higher surface area and pore volume, lower VBM, and presence of surface defects, B-7 exhibited the highest degradation efficiency among all of the samples.

Rational design and synthesis of highly efficient and robust photocatalysts with positive exciton splitting and interfacial charge transfer for environmental applications is critical. Herein, aiming at overcoming the common shortcomings of traditional photocatalysts such as weak photoresponsivity, rapid combination of photo-generated carriers and unstable structure, a novel Ag-bridged dual Z-scheme g-C 3 N 4 /BiOI/AgI plasmonic heterojunction was successfully synthesized using a facile method. Results showed that Ag-AgI nanoparticles and three-dimensional (3D) BiOI microspheres were decorated highly uniformly on the 3D porous g-C 3 N 4 nanosheet, resulting in a higher specific surface area and abundant active sites. The optimized 3D porous dual Z-scheme g-C 3 N 4 /BiOI/Ag-AgI manifested exceptional photocatalytic degradation efficiency of tetracycline (TC) in water with approximately 91.8% degradation efficiency within 165 min, outperforming majority of the reported g-C 3 N 4 -based photocatalysts. Moreover, g-C 3 N 4 /BiOI/Ag-AgI exhibited good stability in terms of activity and structure. In-depth radical scavenging and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analyses confirmed the relative contributions of various scavengers. Mechanism analysis indicated that the improved photocatalytic performance and stability were ascribed to the highly ordered 3D porous framework, fast electron transfer of dual Z-scheme heterojunction, desirable photocatalytic performance of BiOI/AgI and synergistic effect of Ag plasmas. Therefore, the 3D porous Z-scheme g-C 3 N 4 /BiOI/Ag-AgI heterojunction had a good prospect for applications in water remediation. The current work provides new insight and useful guidance for designing novel structural photocatalysts for environment-related applications.

Photo-degradation of pollutant and photo-reduction of CO 2 are efficient ways to address challenges of water pollution , the greenhouse effect and energy crisis, respectively. In our work, via fastening two-dimensional (2D) BiOI nanoplates on 2D g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets , a BiOI/g-C 3 N 4 (BI/CN) S-scheme photocatalyst with closely stacked structure were prepared though a self-assembly process. The prepared BI/CN S-scheme heterojunction could improve the transfer and separation efficiency of photo-generated electron-hole pairs by facilitating the electrons transfer from BiOI to g-C 3 N 4 . Under visible light exposure, the photo-degradation efficiencies of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) and p-chlorophenol (4-PC) by BI/CN-50% reached nearly 100% and 46%, respectively, which were more excellent in comparison with other samples. And BI/CN-50% sample exhibited the best CO production (12.45 μmol∙g −1 ) with visible-light irradiation of 4 h. This value was approximately 4.37 and 5.41 times higher than that of BI (2.85 μmol∙g −1 ) and CN materials (2.30 μmol∙g −1 ), respectively. Moreover, the excellent photocatalytic performance had no visible decay during five cycles. Meanwhile, an S-scheme charge transfer process was confirmed by species trapping experiments and electron spin-trap analysis. This study offers new insights into the activity, kinetics, and mechanism over BiOI-based materials for photocatalysis technology .

Developing novel photocatalysts with intense sunlight-harvesting capacity is still a challenge to realize pollutant degradation and water splitting. To settle this issue, we couple the Gd2MoO6:0.04Er3+/0.10Yb3+ (GMEY) upconverting particle with the BiOI microplate to construct the BiOI@GMEY-x composites. Their corresponding crystal structure, morphology, chemical composition, and upconversion (UC) properties are studied. Due to the UC emission behavior of the GMEY particle, near-infrared (NIR) light can be converted to green and red emissions which could be reabsorbed by the BiOI microplate, bringing about the full use of visible–NIR light by the prepared composites for photocatalysis. Upon visible light irradiation, the resultant samples exhibit good photocatalytic activities in the degradation of methyl blue, RhB, and methyl orange. Compared with that of the BiOI microplate, improved photocatalytic activity is achieved in the resultant composites due to the effect of a built-in electric field and an enhanced sunlight-harvesting ability. Furthermore, the h+ and •O2– species are responsible for the mechanism of photocatalysis. Additionally, excited by full spectrum light, the H2 production capacity of the designed samples is also investigated. It is found that the BiOI@GMEY-10 composite can split water efficiently and its H2 production rate is 10.35 μmol/g/h. These results indicate that both pollutant degradation and water splitting are able to be realized by utilizing the BiOI@GMEY-x composites.

Limited light absorption and severe charge recombination have been widely acknowledged as the two main obstacles restricting the application of P25 in NO photocatalytic conversion. In this work, an advanced heterojunction photocatalyst of Bi/BiOI/black TiO 2 was synthesized via an in-situ solid-state chemical reduction method. The black TiO 2 extended the light absorption to the full spectral region. It constructed a direct Z-scheme heterojunction with BiOI nanosheets, not only promoting the charge separation, but also preserving the strong oxidation ability of photogenerated holes in black TiO 2 and strong reducing ability of photogenerated electrons in BiOI. Thus, more •O 2 − and •OH radical could form when Bi/BiOI/black TiO 2 was subjected to visible light irradiation. Besides, the introduced Bi metal nanoparticles could also enhance the light utilization and served as a cocatalyst to accept the electrons. Therefore, enhanced NO photocatalytic oxidation activity was obtained, with the optimal sample Bi/BiOI/black TiO 2 exhibiting a high NO conversion efficiency of ~70% and NO x removal of ~45%. This work may provide a refreshing perspective for the design of heterojunction photocatalysts for efficient NO photocatalytic purification and other photocatalytic applications.

The BiOI/Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 p–n junctions were constructed by anion exchange method with Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 in situ growth on BiOI. Then, the surfaces of BiOI/Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 samples were modified by negative charge with (3-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (APTES) in an ethanol solution. Finally, the ami-BiOI/Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 /graphene (RGO) ternary composites were fabricates by the simple hydrothermal reaction. The obtained photocatalysts were well characterized with the various characterization techniques to study their morphological, physical, optical, and photocurrent properties, and have been evaluated by investigating the degradation of Rhodamine B and tetracycline under visible irradiation. Compared with single BiOI, the BiOI/Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 photocatalysts displays higher photocatalytic activity, due to the formation of the electric fields between p–n heterojunction to promote the migration of photogenerated carriers. Moreover, the ami-BiOI/Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 /RGO composites with the best photocatalytic activities can be attributed to that the positively charged ami-BiOI/Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 were coupled with the negatively charged graphite oxide (GO) by electrostatically attraction to form the effectively interfacial contacts, causing the photocatalytic reaction sites increased, the range of light response expanded, the separation of photogenerated charge further improved. This work provides a feasible strategy for the construction of high efficiency semiconductor and RGO nanocomposite photocatalyst.

Adjusting the desired structure and heterojunction interface of photocatalytic materials using a facile and efficient strategy is still challenging. In this study, a novel two-dimensional/three-dimensional (2D/3D) oxygen-doped g-C 3 N 4 /BiOI heterostructure nano-sphere (O-g-C 3 N 4 /BiOI) was successfully prepared by a facile solvothermal method for the degradation of nondye organic contaminants. Its composition , morphological characteristics, chemical structure and electrochemical properties have been measured. The result shows the introduction of oxygen doping (O-doping) causes a new defect energy level, extends the light absorption range, and the formation of heterojunction enables the effective separation of photo-generated carriers. Under visible light irradiation, the optimum ratio of O-g-C 3 N 4 /BiOI (2:1) exhibited 100% removal efficiency of bisphenol A within 80 min, which was about 9.1, 2.33, 3.45, and 1.6 times that of pure g-C 3 N 4 , O-g-C 3 N 4 , BiOI, and O-doped-poor heterostructure, respectively. Based on the identified intermediates, the photocatalytic mechanism of O-doped O-g-C 3 N 4 /BiOI (2:1) was also revealed. This finding suggested that the synergistic effect between 2D/3D heterojunction and O-doped greatly promoted visible light photoabsorption and photoinduced carrier separation efficiency with a prolonged lifetime, which was confirmed by multiple optical and electrochemical analyses . This study could bring new opportunities for the rational design of highly efficient photocatalysts by combining 2D/3D heterojunctions with O-doped in environmental remediation.

Bismuth oxyiodide (BiOI) has garnered intense attention in the field of photocatalysis for environmental remediation; however, it suffers from a high electron-hole recombination rate. In this study, for the first time, we report on a facile strategy for the creation of oxygen vacancies in BiOI via strontium (Sr 2+ ) doping. The as-prepared 0.45-SrBiOI demonstrated significantly enhanced photocatalytic degradation of indometacin under visible light exposure, which was almost 10 folds higher than pristine BiOI. This augmented photocatalytic performance was ascribed to the accelerated separation of charge carriers by oxygen vacancies, as well as Sr ion trapping electrons. Reactive species determination experiments revealed that O 2 ▪− , 1 O 2 , and h + were the dominant active species. Finally, potential indometacin degradation pathways were proposed based on the identification of degradation by-products and theoretical calculations. This study offers new perspectives for the synthesis of highly efficient and cost effective BiOI-based photocatalysts, and provides a promising strategy toward advanced environmental remediation.

Bismuth oxyhalide (BiOI) has been used for photoelectrochemical catalysis in the field of catalytic hydrogen evolution, but it in a single-phase form has hardly been reported for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (PHER). Herein, we designed a W/S co-doped BiOI-based superhydrophilic catalyst with oxygen vacancy-rich defects and heterovalent valence states for efficient PHER under visible light. The W/S doping in BiOI not only adjusts the energy band structure and expands the visible light response range, but also transforms its hydrophobicity into superhydrophilicity, with which the gas bubble amount can be reduced and PHER activity enhanced. The introduction of sulfur regulates the content of oxygen vacancies which enhance the active surface sites for capturing water molecules and activating the H-O-H bond. The added tungsten exists in different valence states of W 6+ and W 5+ which is beneficial for electron hopping and PHER activity. The W/S-BiOI-3 with the suitable W/S doping content exhibits the highest visible-light PHER rate of 9.46 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 , with an apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of 9.7 % at 420 nm. W/S-BiOI-3 shows excellent PHER activity, stability, and durability, which provides a feasible scheme for other bismuth-based halogen oxides to be used in PHER.
