BiOX (X = Cl, Br, I) nanostructures: Mannitol-mediated microwave synthesis, visible light photocatalytic performance, and Cr(VI) removal capacity

Guangfang Li,Fan Qin,Runming Wang,Shengqiang Xiao,Hongzhe Sun,Rong Chen

A facile microwave irradiation method has been successfully developed for the controllable fabrication of BiOX (X   =   Cl, Br, I) nanostructures in mannitol solution. The morphology and size of BiOX nanostructures could be readily tailored by adjusting the amount of halide, reaction precursor, and mannitol concentration. Mannitol molecule acts as both a capping agent and a cohesive agent in the formation of BiOX nanostructures. A possible two-stage formation mechanism was discussed based on the morphology evolution of BiOI nanostructures obtained in mannitol solution with different concentrations. The as-synthesized BiOX nanostructures exhibit much higher photocatalytic activities than that of commercial TiO 2 . In particular, flower-like BiOX hierarchical nanostructures display the best photocatalytic performance, which is mainly ascribed to their unique hierarchical structure, high BET surface area, and large band gap. Moreover, BiOX nanostructures also demonstrate superior Cr(VI) removal capacity. The Cr(VI) adsorption behavior was also analyzed by the Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherms.

Insights into Adsorption Behavior and Mechanism of Br– onto Nickel–Aluminum Layered Double Hydroxides Intercalated with Different Inorganic Anions

Qiongyuan Zhang,Yanping Wang,Jilong Han,Haining Liu,Huifang Zhang,Zhijian Wu,Siyuan Zhang,Wenjie Han,Xiushen Ye

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) have garnered significant attention from researchers in the field of adsorption due to their unique laminated structures and ion exchange properties. LDHs with various anion intercalation showed different adsorption effects on adsorbing ions, but the corresponding adsorption mechanisms are ambiguous. In this study, three types of NiAl-LDHs were synthesized, utilizing NO3–, CO32–, or Cl– as the interlayer anions. Batch tests were conducted to study their adsorption performances for Br–. Among them, the LDH with a NO3– intercalation layer exhibited the highest adsorption capacity for Br–, reaching up to 1.40 mmol g–1. The adsorption kinetics, mechanism, and renewability of these NiAl-LDHs were systematically compared. As a result, the type of Br– adsorption by all three materials was single molecular layer chemisorption. Moreover, the thermodynamic results of adsorption suggested that the adsorption of Br– was a spontaneous exothermic process. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and point of zero charge analysis collectively indicated that the adsorption of Br– by LDHs primarily occurred through interlayer ion exchange and electrostatic interactions. Structural characterizations of the adsorbents revealed that Br– entered the interlayers of the three LDHs, causing varying degrees of reduction in the interlayer spacing. Density functional theory calculations indicated that the interlayer binding energy of LDH with NO3– intercalation was the lowest, thereby making it more susceptible NO3– to be exchanged with Br–. Finally, the stability of the NiAl-LDHs was studied. The NiAl-LDHs retains a high removal efficiency of Br– even after 5 cycles of adsorption and desorption.

Anodic Oxidation of Methanol to Formaldehyde Synergizing with a Br-/Br2 Redox-Mediated Chemical Route to Produce Methyl Formate

Ke-An Wang,Zhen-Long Wang,Hai-Bin Zhu

Graphical Efficient electrosynthesis of methyl formate is achieved through the facile reaction between formaldehyde produced from anodic methanol oxidation, and methoxy bromide which is in-situ generated by reaction of Br 2 from anodic oxidation of Br − and methoxide from cathodic methanol reduction. This method features high atomic economy only producing valuable methyl formate and hydrogen gas. Methyl formate (MF) is one of the most important chemical commodities, which has a wide range of applications. Due to environmental friendliness, mild reaction conditions, and easy operations, electrosynthesis of MF has garnered increasing attention in recent years. In this work, we reported an electrosynthesis route toward MF in a halide-containing methanol solution. The thorough mechanistic investigations point out that electrosynthesis of MF is accomplished by instant reaction between aldehyde from anodic methanol oxidation, and methoxy bromide (CH 3 OBr) that is in-situ generated by reaction of Br 2 from anodic oxidation of Br − with methoxide (CH 3 O − ) from cathodic reduction of methanol. This method features high atomic economy only producing valuable MF and hydrogen gas, and shows distinct advantages compared to the reported MF electrosynthesis methods. Even at 200 mA/cm 2 , the faradaic efficiency (FE) of MF remains consistently around 60 % at the anode while a 100 % FE hydrogen gas is produced at the cathode.

Bifunctional Ligand Passivation Enables Stable Blue Mixed-Halide CsPb(Br/Cl)3 Perovskite Quantum Dots toward Light-Emitting Diodes

Yongfeng Liu,Yupeng Ying,Qingyu Xie,Zhaoju Gao,Xiuwen Shao,Min Zhou,Wei Pei,Xiaosheng Tang,Yusong Tu

Mixed-halide CsPb(Br/Cl)3 perovskite quantum dots (PeQDs) have attracted extensive attention in light-emitting diodes (LEDs), but their low photoluminescent efficiency and especially poor stability impede their practical applications. Here, we employ bifunctional didodecyldimethylammonium thiocyanide (DDASCN) with a pseudohalogen SCN– and branched DDA+ to obtain blue-emitting CsPbBr2Cl PeQDs. DDASCN significantly boosts the photoluminescence quantum yield to 92% by inhibiting nonradiative recombination. Importantly, DDASCN PeQDs show excellent stabilities against air, UV light, heat, and polar solvents. These improved performances were explained by density functional theory calculation, which shows that SCN– fills the Cl– vacancy by simultaneously binding with undercoordinated Pb2+ and Cs+, while DDA+ connects undercoordinated Br– and lies parallel to the PeQD core, leading to efficient passivation and a strong binding capacity. Finally, we achieved high-performance white LEDs by integrating our PeQDs, resulting in a color-rendering index of 92.9, a color gamut of 119.61%, and chromaticity coordinates of (0.33, 0.33). This provides an effective method to obtain efficient and stable CsPb(Br/Cl)3 PeQDs for practical applications.

Nonradical degradation of antibiotics in seawater by Cl−/Br−-activated peracetic acid: Dominant contribution of 1O2 and reactive halogens

Jingzhen Su,Yong Wang,Cong Li,Zhengming He,Kai Zhang,Mingqiang Ren,Qile Wang,Tianxing Chen,Jibran Ali Ghumro,Virender K. Sharma,Hyunook Kim,Yunshu Zhang

Natural seawater contains abundant halide ions that remain largely untapped, while peracetic acid often requires activation to enhance its oxidative properties. The interaction mechanisms between these components have not been thoroughly investigated. This study investigated the activation effect of high concentrations of Cl − and Br⁻ coexisting in seawater on PAA by adding PAA to seawater. Quenching experiments, along with Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) spectroscopy and UPLC-TQ-MS, were conducted to determine the reaction mechanism and degradation process of SMX. Seawater systems containing 35 ‰ salinity or Br − -PAA systems (0.5 mM Br − ) degraded 100 % SMX within 10 min or 12 min, respectively ( k obs =0.4873 min⁻ 1 or 0.3581 min⁻ 1 ). While the Cl − -PAA system, though slower, still degraded 97.7 % within 180 min (300 mM Cl − , k obs =0.0173 min⁻ 1 ). SMX degradation rates remained above 95 % across the pH range of 3–9, with optimal performance at pH= 3. However, the presence of HA inhibited SMX degradation efficiency by over 40 %. Results indicate that SMX degradation efficiency correlates positively with Cl⁻/Br⁻ content and PAA concentration. The superior removal efficiency stems from activated PAA not only generating HOCl and HOBr via oxygen atom transfer but also further producing 1 O 2 , which dominates the non-selective degradation process. This approach adapts to a wide pH range but is consumed by coexisting HA. The superiority of the Br − -PAA system over Cl − -PAA stems from the strong oxidizing power of HOBr. The oxidation pathways include halogenation, bond cleavage, and hydroxylation. ECOSAR predictions indicated that most transformation products exhibited higher toxicity than the parent SMX compound.

Enabling a Reversible Six-Electron Redox Reaction Based on I−/I+ and Br−/Br0 for Aqueous Zinc-Bromine Batteries

Jing Zhang,Xiaoxing Ji,Qingxiu Yu,Xixi Zhang,Chuanlin Li,Na Li,Mengzhen Kong,Dingzheng Li,Wenjie Liu,Chenggang Wang,Xijin Xu

Zinc-halogen batteries are usually based on two-electron transfer reactions from X−to X2. However, the halogen is capable of being further oxidized to higher valence states, thereby achieving the higher capacity of zinc- halogen batteries. Here, a six-electron reaction based on I−/I+and Br−/Br0is activated successfully by introducing KI into the electrolyte. ZIF-8-derived porous carbon (ZPC), serving as the host of halogen, effectively suppresses polybromide/polyiodide shuttle owing to the chemisorption/physical adsorption. Additionally, the adsorption of I−on the surface of the zinc anode effectively inhibits the growth of dendrites and the formation of by-products. Consequently, zinc-bromine batteries exhibit outstanding electrochemical performance, including a specific capacity of 345 mAh g−1at 1 A g−1and an excellent capacity retention of 80% after 3000 cycles at 2 A g−1. This strategy provides a novel way for enhancing the electrochemical performance of zinc-halogen batteries.

Preparation and performance characterization of block cross-linked copolymers PCaPE(Br) and PCaPE(I) via RAFT polymerization and quaternization reaction

Chaoyue Shan,Haohao Zhang,Yan Gao,Hui Wang,Li Han,Yuanyuan Du,Wen He,Mingyuan Pang,Xing Gao,Yen Leng Pak

Reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization enables precise regulation of polymer chain growth and active center distribution. This study adopted a two-step approach with RAFT polymerization followed by quaternization to synthesize antibacterial materials, specifically tunable porous polymers PCaPE(Br) and PCaPE(I). The work focused on the structure–activity relationship between RAFT-derived block structures and the antibacterial properties of these materials. RAFT-mediated polymerization precisely controlled the block copolymer precursor PE-PDE, which is PEMA-b-P(DMAEA-co-EGDMA), and this control facilitated the subsequent formation of ordered porous structures. When the molar ratio of poly(ethyl methacrylate) (PEMA) to ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) was set to 1 : 6, the final quaternized products PCaPE2(Br) and PCaPE2(I) exhibited porous and fluffy microstructures. These microstructures were characterized by large specific surface area and high porosity. This structure, combined with uniformly distributed quaternary ammonium salt groups from the quaternization of N,N-dimethylaminoethyl acrylate (DMAEA) tertiary amine groups, enhanced the contact between antibacterial active sites and bacteria as well as antibacterial efficacy. PCaPE(Br) and PCaPE(I) showed excellent broad-spectrum antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus. They also maintained good reusability with over 95% activity retention after five cycles. Such advantages support their prospects in biomedicine, agricultural antibacterials and wastewater treatment.

Cost-Effective Strategy for the Synthesis of Air-Stable CH3NH3PbX3 (X = Cl, Br, and I) Quantum Dots with Bright Emission

Sai-Nan Guo,Hao Wu,Dan Wang,Jie-Xin Wang

Lead halide perovskite quantum dots (QDs) are known as prospective optoelectronic device materials because of their excellent luminescence, extraordinary photoelectric performance, and specific octahedron framework. Herein, we report a cost-effective approach for synthesizing highly stable CH3NH3PbBr3 QDs in low-polarity binary solvents without nitrogen protection. The CH3NH3PbBr3 QDs are tunable from 1.2 to 4.2 nm by adjusting the proportion of oleic acid and oleylamine as capping ligands. The photoluminescence quantum yield of CH3NH3PbBr3 QDs can reach 87.4%. The fluorescence can maintain over 80% of its earliest emission intensity under the atmosphere after 5 days, which is much better than that (∼10%) of QDs with ligand-assisted reprecipitation. The possible reaction mechanism of preparing CH3NH3PbBr3 QDs was also addressed. Notably, such a strategy can be applied extensively in the preparation of other lead halide perovskite QDs. Furthermore, the as-prepared thick PMMA-coated CH3NH3PbBr3 QDs were further conjoined with a red luminescence powder on a blue InGaN chip to obtain a powerful efficiency (45.4 lm W–1) warm white light-emitting diode.

[O2Pb3]2(BO3)Br: An Oxidoborate Oxide Bromide with the ∞1[O2Pb3] Double Chains Based on Edge-sharing OPb4 Tetrahedra

Lingyun Dong,Jiao Yang,Shigang Shen,Zhenzhen Liu,Xiaojing Chen,Sufang Sun

Through extensive research on the PbO / PbBr 2 / B 2 O 3 system, a new single crystal of yellow lead-containing oxyborate bromine, [O 2 Pb 3 ] 2 (BO 3 )Br, was grown from the melt. It crystallizes in the centrosymmetric space group Cmcm (no. 63) of the orthorhombic system with the following unit cell dimensions: a = 9.5748(8) Å, b = 20.841(2) Å, c = 5.7696(5) Å, and Z = 4. The whole structure is characterized by an infinite one-dimensional (1D) ∞ 1 [O 2 Pb 3 ] double chain, which is based on the OPb 4 oxocentered tetrahedra and considered as the derivative of the continuous sheet of OPb 4 tetrahedra from the tetragonal modification of α-PbO. The 1D ∞ 1 [O 2 Pb 3 ] double chains are further bridged by the BO 3 units through common oxygen atoms to form two-dimensional (2D) ∞ 1 [[(O 2 Pb 3 )(BO 3 )] layers, with Br atoms situated between the layers. IR spectroscopy, UV/Vis/NIR diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, and thermal analysis were also performed on the reported material.

Eco-friendly all-inorganic CsPbX3 (X = Cl, Br, and I) perovskite nanocrystals in pyrophyllite for bright white light-emitting diodes

Lin Yuan,Yufeng Zhou,Ze Wang,Enrou Mei,Xiaojuan Liang,Weidong Xiang

Colloidal lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) have recently emerged as versatile photonic sources. However, their performance stability has been far from the requirements, and this type of material is toxic to the environment after degradation. In this paper, a hot injection strategy was used to prepare a CsPbX 3 perovskite NC solution, wherein the photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of CsPbBrI 2 reached 78% and that of CsPbBr 3 was 63%. Then, CsPbX 3 NCs are successfully adsorbed on natural layered mineral pyrophyllite for improving heat, light, and water stability. Monodispersed CsPbX 3 NCs are evenly distributed on the surface of the pyrophyllite sheet in a high-density manner, which possibly originates from the electrostatic attraction effect of abundant anions on the surface of pyrophyllite to CsPbX 3 NCs. In a series of CsPbX 3 @pyrophyllite nanocomposites prepared, the PLQYs of green-emitting CsPbBr 3 and red-emitting CsPbBrI 2 were 47% and 29%, respectively. The materials were employed to fabricate white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) with a wide color gamut of 117%. Importantly, because of the swelling and cation-adsorbent properties of pyrophyllite, the dissolution of lead in water was greatly reduced, which plays a certain role in ecological protection.

Postsynthetic Surface-Treatment of CsPbX3 (X = Cl, Br, or I) Nanocrystals via CdX2 Precursor Solution toward High Photoluminescence Quantum Yield

Cong Xie,Yubin Zhao,Wenbin Shi,Ping Yang

The existing defects on the surface of CsPbX3 nanocrystals (NCs) resulted in the decrease of the photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) of NCs. In this study, we developed a simple strategy, which can make the treated CsPbX3 NCs exhibit high PLQYs and better stability by CdX2 post-treatment at room temperature. The treated CsPbX3 NCs were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns and PL spectra. The shape, size, and crystal structure of the NCs remained unchanged after Cd ion treatment. The PLQYs of CsPbCl3 increased from 24 to 73% and the PLQYs of CsPbBr3 NCs increased from 85 to 92% after treatment. The significant enhancement of PLQYs is ascribed to the effective passivation of surface defects, in which Cd2+ and X– ions occupied the Pb–X vacancies existing on the surface of the NCs. In addition, this strategy was also applied to a mixed halide perovskite. The practical application of CsPbX3 NCs will be extended by this method.

An integrated experimental and machine learning-based optimization framework for energy-efficient MEA/[TBA][Br] solvent in shipboard CO2 capture

Huang Kuniadi Wandy,Vo Dat-Nguyen,Yin Xunyuan

Shipboard CO 2 capture (SCC) systems using MEA/[TBA][Br] solvent lack experimental studies and efficient data-driven optimization frameworks that minimize regeneration energy while maintaining high CO 2 capture rates. This study conducts cyclic experiments and develops a deep neural network (DNN)-based framework to optimize operating conditions for shipboard-relevant carbon capture. In the first stage, 70 experimental samples are collected under varying [TBA][Br] concentration, desorber temperature, and liquid-to-gas (L/G) ratio to train a surrogate DNN model. This model is used to formulate an optimization problem, from which an optimal operating zone is identified. In the second stage, 28 additional experiments are performed within this operating zone, and the full 98-sample dataset is used to train a refined DNN model, featuring three hidden layers with hyperparameters tuned via grid search and evaluated using an 80−20 training-test split. Optimization using the refined DNN identifies the optimal condition at [TBA][Br] concentration of 2.96 wt%, a desorber temperature of 120 C, and an L/G ratio of 1.73 kg/kg, corresponding to more than 90% CO 2 capture and a regeneration energy of 2.94 GJ/t CO 2 . This optimal performance corresponds to an 11.40%–34.87% reduction in regeneration energy compared to baseline MEA in this study and MEA-based SCC systems from the literature. The refined DNN demonstrates strong predictive capability, achieving MAPE values of 1.27% (training) and 1.41% (test) for CO 2 capture rate, and 0.83% (training) and 1.04% (test) for regeneration energy. Sensitivity analysis highlights the influence of all three variables: [TBA][Br] addition reduces sensible and vaporization heat requirements, higher L/G ratios improve CO 2 capture rates, and elevated desorber temperatures simultaneously enhance CO 2 capture rates and lower regeneration energy. Moreover, ATR-FTIR analysis over 15 cycles confirms solvent chemical stability with no evidence of chemical degradation. This work demonstrates an effective machine learning-enabled optimization strategy for SCC with MEA/[TBA][Br] solvent and offers insights into developing energy-efficient SCC systems and a framework extendable to other CO 2 emission sources.
