The food-borne diseases triggered by Escherichia coli O157: H7 ( E. coli O157: H7) have become a life-threatening problem for tens of thousands of people around the world in the past few decades. Therefore, a rapid, simple, and user-friendly biosensing label to monitor E. coli O157: H7 has become necessary and important. In this work, carboxyl functionalized graphene quantum dots (cf-GQDs) as fluorescent labels for optical imaging and sensing in E. coli O157: H7 have been firstly proposed and evaluated. E. coli O157: H7 antibody is successfully covalently conjugated to water-soluble cf-GQDs via a cross-linking reaction, and then cf-GQDs immunofluorescence probe is achieved. The probe can effectively recognize E. coli O157: H7 and generate strong fluorescent signal. The experimental result shows that the blocking agent can obviously improve the specificity of the bioprobe for E. coli O157: H7 with the minimum detection limit of 100 cfu/mL. This novel detection method could be as a useful tool to detect E. coli O157: H7 in food, water, and environment.

In this study, a one-pot aryl diazonium reaction was used as a simple and mild method to graft graphene onto the smooth and inert surface of T1100-grade carbon fiber (CF) through covalent bonding without any damage on CF, to refine the interface performance of CF/bismaleimide (BMI) composites. XPS, SEM, AFM, and dynamic contact angle testing (DCAT) were used to characterize chemical activity, morphologies, and wettability on untreated and grafted CF surfaces. Meanwhile, the impact of the graft method on the tensile strength of CF was also examined using the monofilament tensile test. IFSS between CF grafted with graphene and BMI resin achieved 104.2 MPa after modification, increasing from 85.5 MPa by 21.8%, while the tensile strength did not decrease compared to the pristine CF. The mechanism of this interface enhancement might be better chemical bonding and mechanical interlock between CF grafted with graphene and BMI resin, which is generated from the high surface chemical activity and rough structure of graphene. This study may propose a simple and mild method to functionalize the CF surface and enhance the interface performance of composites without compromising the tensile properties of T1100-grade CF.

Carbon fiber-reinforced high-performance thermoplastic composites have been widely used in military science, aerospace, and new energy fields. However, the inert surface of carbon fibers leads to poor interfacial strength, necessitating surface modification. In this study, Pc was introduced onto the CF surface via a solution impregnation–coating method to enhance the interface interactions of CF/PPESK composites. The effects of Pc structure on the interfacial bonding and high-temperature performance of the composites were investigated. When CF was impregnated in a 5 mg/mL Pc solution and dried at 150 °C, its surface energy reached 36.9 mN/m, representing a 41.37% increase compared with untreated CF. Meanwhile, the CF/PPESK composites modified with 5 mg/mL Pc exhibited 18%, 67%, 14%, and 36% increases in interlaminar shear strength, interfacial shear strength, tensile strength, and flexural strength, respectively, compared with those based on desized fibers. At 150 ℃, 200 ℃, and 250 ℃, the composites retained 93%, 85%, and 75% of their flexural strength, respectively, outperforming the unmodified counterparts. These improvements are attributed to π – π conjugation between Pc, CF, and PPESK, which enhances interfacial bonding, as well as the increased surface roughness and polarity of CF after Pc modification. Moreover, the excellent thermal stability of Pc ensures the maintenance of interfacial performance at elevated temperatures. This work provides a new approach for developing high-temperature-resistant sizing agents for high-performance thermoplastic resin composites.

Carbon fiber reinforced polyetheretherketone (CF/PEEK) composites suffer from severe fiber-matrix modulus mismatch and weak interfacial adhesion, limiting their mechanical performance. Herein, eco-friendly waterborne sizing agents consisting of self-crosslinkable polyamide-imide (CPI) and carboxylated carbon nanotubes (CCNTs) are developed to construct a triple-coupled organic-nano-transcrystalline interphase. Thermally robust CPI adapts to high processing temperature of PEEK, while uniformly dispersed CCNTs enrich surface active groups, increase fiber roughness and supply heterogeneous nucleation sites for thick transcrystalline (TC) layers. CCNT content governs interfacial morphology, TC thickness and composite mechanical properties. The optimized CF-CPI-25CCNT achieves tensile strength of 233.4 MPa, flexural strength of 348.0 MPa, impact strength of 41.0 MPa and IFSS of 84.4 MPa, rising by 70.4%, 55.1%, 54.1%, and 110.4% versus bare CF. CF-CPI-50CCNT delivers maximum tensile and flexural moduli, whereas CF-CPI-75CCNT obtains superior tensile strength at 200°C. AFM characterizations confirm the hybrid sizing builds a continuous gradient-modulus interphase to mitigate interfacial stress concentration. Moreover, CF-CPI-25CCNT exhibits balanced tow integrity and flexibility suitable for industrial processing. Synergistic reinforcement originates from improved wettability, mechanical interlocking, TC induction and rigid-flexible gradient architecture. This green sizing provides a scalable multi-scale interfacial design route for high-temperature-resistant CF/PEEK composites. Highlights The CPI/CCNT sizing agents build organic-nano-transcrystallinity interphase. CCNT serves nucleation sites to thicken transcrystallinity. The interfacial wettability of CF is significantly improved. Gradient interphase is formed and relieves modulus mismatch. CF-CPI-25CCNT achieves 110.4% higher IFSS.

Electrospinning-electrospray assembles aligned CNT on fibers, overcoming resin viscosity limits. • CNT embedded in fibers form cohesive interlocking, achieving strong mechanical interlock. • Guide–arrest–3D propagation mechanism enables multiscale crack deflection for high toughening. • G IC ,ini and G IC ,prop increased by 51% and 44% respectively, G IIC rose by 178%; flexural strength, flexural modulus, and ILSS also improved. Conventional carbon fiber reinforced high-performance thermoplastic (CFRHPTP) composites suffer from inherent dispersion deficiency and alignment challenges of carbon nanotubes (CNT) in high-viscosity matrix, leading to suboptimal interlaminar toughening efficiency. To address this critical issue, a bioinspired multiscale toughness and reinforcement paradigm for carbon fiber reinforced poly(phthalazinone ether sulfone ketone) (CF/PPESK) composite was proposed. Specifically, drawing inspiration from the geometric microstructure of cactus spines (high aspect ratio and directional growth), the vertically aligned CNT-anchored electrospun fiber veils were developed by the synergistic electrospinning-electrospraying protocol, and were strategically inserted into the interlaminar zones of CF/PPESK composites. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) characterizations confirmed that the electrospun fibers were firmly anchored with CNT, successfully constructing a three-dimensional reinforcement network. Furthermore, this architecture significantly enhanced the toughness of CF/PPESK composites, with the initiation and propagation values of mode I fracture toughness increased by 51 % and 44 %, respectively, while mode II fracture toughness improved remarkably by 178 %. Notably, flexural strength, flexural modulus, and interlaminar shear strength were enhanced by 25 %, 24 %, and 18 %, respectively. Microstructural analysis revealed that the excellent toughening effect originates from a three-dimensional crack deflection, guidance, and arrest mechanism formed by the synergistic interaction between electrospun fibers and aligned CNT. This micro-nano synergistic mechanism significantly promotes fracture energy dissipation and simultaneously enhances the in-plane strength of the composite. This work provides an innovative and efficient pathway to overcome the interlaminar toughness limitations in high-viscosity resin-based composites. A one-step electrospinning-electrospray assembly is developed to anchor aligned carbon nanotubes (CNT) onto electrospun fibers, overcoming resin viscosity limitations to achieve controlled nanoscale orientation within composites. This bioinspired micro-nano architecture features CNT embedded within the electrospun fibers and forming cohesive interlocking, achieving a strong mechanical interlocking effect. Introduced into the interlaminar region, this architecture triggers a "guide–arrest–three-dimensional propagation" crack deflection mechanism, significantly enhancing toughening efficiency. As a result, Mode I initiation toughness increases by 51%, Mode I propagation toughness by 44%, and Mode II interlaminar toughness by 178%, with simultaneous improvements in flexural strength (25%), modulus (24%), and ILSS (18%). Herein, an excellent cathode of ZnO-CeO 2 /CF was fabricated successfully via one-step electro-deposition method for the degradation of ciprofloxacin (CIP) in sewage by electro-Fenton (EF) technology. The detailed characterizations of ZnO-CeO 2 /CF material were conducted by SEM, XRD, XPS, CV and EIS. Effects of deposition time, initial pH and voltage value on degradation performance of ZnO-CeO 2 /CF were investigated systematically. The results showed nearly 100% degradation efficiency was easily obtained at 2 h owing to the large specific surface area of cathode, the good oxygen storage ability and Fenton-like performance of ZnO-CeO 2 . It was worth to mention that the favorable capability still existed in cathode body after 10 consecutive runs. Moreover, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) test and sacrificial agent experiments revealed that the increase of active substance accelerated the degradation efficiency of CIP during the process of valence state transition of Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ or Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ .

The scientific community has dedicated the past decade to integrate its resources in pursuit of “sustainable development”, aiming to pave the way for a perpetually eco-friendly and sustainable future. As a part of this collective effort, traditional petroleum-based polyurethanes have been progressively substituted by environmentally friendly alternatives. In this study, a conservation-minded approach was implemented using a green solvent, γ-valerolactone, along with fully biogenic-derived reagents: epoxidized soybean oil, tartaric acid and L-lysine diisocyanate to develop a hyperbranched waterborne polyurethane (HWPU) sizing agent. Meanwhile, tertiary amine was integrated into the polyol structure, facilitating the self-catalytic process en route to polyurethane, thereby eliminating the need for highly toxic catalysts. The meticulously developed fully bio-based sizing agent notably enhanced the interfacial properties between the carbon fiber (CF) and nylon 6 resin matrix. Comprehensive mechanical property evaluations of the modified composites revealed 49.4% and 49.6% improvements in flexural strength and interlaminar shear strength, respectively, compared with pristine CF composites. Additionally, interfacial shear strength tests demonstrated a substantial increase of 66.1%. This work presents an attractive avenue for the prospective industrial production and application of a green HWPU sizing agent.

Carbon fiber (CF) reinforced thermoplastic composites are limited in applications like the automotive industry due to the weak interfacial strength between the fiber and matrix, which adversely affects overall composite performance. In this work, a novel series of water-based polyamide (WPA) sizing agents were designed and synthesized from polyetheramine D230, 5-sulfoisophthalic acid sodium salt, 1,6-hexamethylenediamine, and dodecanedioic acid to improve the interfacial properties of CF fabric reinforced polyamide 612 (CF/PA612) composites. Their chemical structures were characterized by FT-IR and 1 H NMR spectra. Furthermore, their thermal stability, hydrophilicity, and dispersion stability were systematically characterized via TGA, contact angle measurements, and dynamic light scattering, respectively. After sizing treatment with the WPA sizing agent, the surface-modified CFs exhibited an increase in surface roughness from 175.4 to 61.4 nm and in dynamic contact angle from 85.56° to 55.25°. Furthermore, for the WPA-sized CF-reinforced PA612 thermoplastic composites, the flexural strength and interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) increased from 505 MPa and 43.9 MPa to 676 MPa and 55.8 MPa, respectively, representing increases of 27.11% and 33.68%. This water-based sizing agent design and CF surface modification strategy provide new insights for enhancing the interfacial properties of CF reinforced polyamide-type thermoplastic composites. Highlights Water-based polyamide sizing agents with hydrophilic and hydrophobic segments. Hydrophilic and hydrophobic ratio control for particle size regulation and film-forming optimization. Multiscale synergistic interfacial enhancement through π – π interactions, mechanical interlocking, and hydrogen bonding mechanisms. Significantly improved mechanical properties with 1.0 wt% WPA-101 sizing agent.

Hydroxyapatite (HA) coatings on carbon fiber-reinforced carbon (C f /C) composites hold promise for orthopedic implants. However, the interface between HA and C f /C is prone to delamination, limiting its application. To address this, a polydopamine (PDA)-polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-graphene oxide (GO) transition layer was introduced to reinforce and toughen HA coatings on C f /C composites (PDA-PVA-GO/C f /C) via hydrothermal electro-deposition/post-hydrothermal treatment. For comparison, the PDA and PDA/PVA transition layers were also prepared on C f /C, designated as PDA/C f /C and PDA-PVA/C f /C, respectively. The precursor and transformed coatings obtained were monetite and HA. XRD analyses revealed that PDA and PVA infiltrated the monetite lattice without affecting the HA lattice parameters. Remarkably, scratch tests demonstrated that the HA/PVD-PVA-GO coating on C f /C exhibited a dense configuration and compact interfacial structure, achieving a maximum critical load of 51.5 N, surpassing other reported electrochemically prepared HA coatings. Moreover, scratch tests indicated a more homogeneous scratch pattern with no sudden delamination of the coating from the matrix. In vitro assessments revealed that all HA coatings with the transition layer exhibited enhanced bioactivity and cell compatibility compared with HA alone. In particular, PDA/PVA/GO-C f /C exhibited the best superior efficacy in promoting the proliferation of mouse embryonic osteoblast precursor (MC3T3-E1) cells and significantly increased Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) production in rat bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs). These findings underscore the potential of PDA-PVA-GO/C f /C as a promising biomaterial for bone regeneration. Graphical

The interfacial bonding between carbon fiber (CF) and the matrix in carbon fiber-reinforced high-performance thermoplastic (CFRHPTP) composites is weak, owing to the chemical inertness of the CF surface and nonreactivity of the thermoplastic resin. Hence, the applications of these composites are severely limited. In this study, a 2D GO/3D NH 2 -UiO-66 nanohybrid coating was hierarchically assembled via a two-step method. First, GO was assembled on CF (G-CF) via electrophoretic deposition to provide nucleation sites, and the NH 2 -UiO-66 was assembled in situ on the G-CF surface to obtain modified CF (G-N-CF) via electrochemical deposition. The chemical compositions, surface morphologies, and wettabilities of the CFs were systematically analyzed. Using poly(bisphthalazinone ether sulfone ketone) (PBPESK) as a matrix, a series of CF/PBPESK composites were prepared using G-N-CF, G-CF, and D-CF. The flexural strength and interlaminar shear strength of the G-N-CF-2/PBPESK composite increased by 28.5% and 48.3%, respectively, compared with those of the D-CF/PBPESK composite. The interfacial failure mechanism changed from adhesive failure to cohesive failure after treating CF with the 2D GO/3D NH 2 -UiO-66 nanohybrid coating. This study provides an effective strategy for the interphase design of CFRHPTP composites based on multiple physical and chemical interactions.

The application of polyimide (PI) as an effective sizing agent for carbon fiber (CF) in CF/poly ether ether ketone (PEEK) composites represents a promising approach. Here, a series of novel carboxylated waterborne PI sizing agents with different aliphatic ratios were designed to construct a rigid-flexible gradient interphase for the purpose of promoting interfacial adhesion between CF and PEEK. It was observed that the mechanical properties of the composites were optimal when the molar ratio of rigid diamine monomer to flexible diamine monomer reached 7:3. Significant augmentation was observed in various mechanical and interfacial properties, including tensile modulus (25.6 %), tensile strength (19.8 %), flexural modulus (28.5 %), flexural strength (15.8 %), impact strength (24.3 %), and IFSS (57.8 %). Furthermore, the tensile strength of the composites exhibited a greater increase (27.2 %) at elevated temperatures, thus indicating that the role of the interfacial layer was more pronounced at high temperatures. The interphase was analyzed by peak force quantitative nanomechanical imaging (PF-QNM) mode of atomic force microscopy (AFM), the results indicated the formation of a modulus transition zone between the CF and PEEK. This zone exhibited a gradient change of modulus, enabling the composite to transfer and distribute applied loads more effectively when subjected to external forces. Consequently, the findings of this study demonstrated the potential of waterborne PI sizing agents for application on CF, offering a promising avenue for surface modification of high-performance CF/PEEK composites.

The development of high-end equipment towards lightweight, intelligent designs places stringent demands on multifunctional integration in structural materials. Although thermoplastic carbon fibre-reinforced polyetheretherketone (CF/PEEK) composites offer advantages such as rapid processing and recyclability, their weak interfacial properties and limited functionality severely limit their potential for advanced applications, such as electromagnetic shielding and intelligent de-icing. This study, therefore, proposes an innovative, multi-scale, synergistic modification strategy that combines electrophoretic deposition interface engineering and matrix modification to manufacture CF/PEEK composites with enhanced mechanical properties and multifunctional integration. A three-dimensional carbon nanotube reinforcement layer was formed on the surface of the carbon fibre via electrophoretic deposition (EPD). Concurrently, the incorporation of graphene nanoplates (GNPs) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) into the PEEK matrix via blending formed an interfacial bridging-matrix co-permeation three-dimensional structure. Experiments were conducted on the mechanical properties, electrical heating performance, electromagnetic shielding capabilities, and in-situ rapid repair capacity of synergistically reinforced CF/PEEK composites. The results indicate that the interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) and flexural strength of the synergistically reinforced composites increased by 113.1% and 121.6%, respectively, compared to the original composite. Electromagnetic shielding performance improved by 92.5% (65.06 dB), and the composites exhibited excellent electrical heating performance, reaching 113.9°C at 3 V/300 s, with stability maintained after 10 cycles. The mechanical properties recovered to 77.8% of the original composite after in-situ rapid repair, and the shielding effectiveness was restored to 96.4%. This work provides new insights and broader application prospects for designing next-generation structural-functional integrated thermoplastic composites for high-end equipment applications.
