Microfluidic fuel cell (MFC) represents a novel technology for chip cooling and energy harvesting at the same time. By flowing electrolytes on chip surface, the waste heat can be efficiently removed, while the elevated electrolyte temperature can boost the fuel cell power output. To further improve its efficacy, this work introduces nanographene into its electrolyte for the first time, leading to an innovative nanofluid-enhanced MFC. Integrated with a heat simulation chip operated at 8.6 W/cm 2 , this novel technology achieves 20.6% higher peak power density and 14.2% lower chip surface temperature than the conventional MFC, proving nanographene's positive role in heat transfer enhancement and minimum negative impact on the fuel cell system. Moreover, starch is confirmed to be a suitable dispersant for this nanofluid electrolyte with excellent dispersion durability of more than 14 days as well as negligible fouling effect to the catalytic surface. Furthermore, the high physiochemical stability of nanographene under the combined thermal-mechanical-chemical-electrical stress is strongly proved, guaranteeing its high recycling capability so as to minimize the cost penalty.

Accurate detection of iron ions (Fe 3+ ) is crucial for environmental and health monitoring. Traditional methods mainly rely on larger and complex instruments, making it difficult to meet the demand for rapid or on-site analysis. This study aims to develop a novel method integrating microfluidic synthesis, paper-based sensing, and smartphone-based detection. Through simulation and experimental verification, a three-dimensional micromixer capable of inducing vortex flow was studied. Based on orthogonal experiments in the microfluidic system, the synthesis process of nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) was optimized, increasing the fluorescence quantum yield to 44.2%. For the detection of Fe 3+ , a microfluidic paper-based analytical device (μPAD) was designed and fabricated using a commonly available laser printer, with the N-CQDs immobilized as the probes afterwards. By integrating a portable device with a self-developed mobile phone application, quantitative Fe 3+ analysis was achieved within minutes. The method exhibits a linear detection range of 0.01–3 mg/L, a limit of detection of 8 μg/L and excellent selectivity for Fe 3+ , with recovery rates of 98.0%–110.0% in spiked recovery experiments for water and serum samples. This work provides a feasible solution for on-site and low-cost detection of heavy metal ions in environmental monitoring and point-of-care diagnostics.

Patient-derived colorectal cancer organoids (CRCOs) are increasingly recognized for their ability to preserve genetic, transcriptional, histological, and drug-responsive features of the original colorectal tumors, offering promise in precision medicine and drug development. While the conventional Matrigel dome culture (DOME) approach has been instrumental in enabling valuable investigations, it has limitations—most notably considerable variation in organoid size and drug sensitivity profiles. In this study, we developed an organoid-on-a-chip (CHIP) for forming uniform organoids and improving precision drug evaluation. Specifically, we fabricated the CHIP using three-dimensional (3D)-printing and micro-molding techniques. Using this CHIP, 19 uniform CRCOs can be generated concurrently in a single well of a 96-well plate within three days, each forming from a minimal seeding density of only 100 cells. Furthermore, the CHIP facilitates in situ imaging and continuous monitoring of individual organoids, supporting label-free, morphometric analysis-based drug screening. Organoids cultured on the CHIP show significantly improved consistency, uniformity, and reproducibility over the DOME method. Our CHIP organoids are functionally identical to conventional DOME organoids, but exhibit greater reliability in drug screening. These results support the CHIP’s potential for high-throughput assays and predictive drug screening models.

The plasma-derived reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS) enable cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) to combat cancer and infectious wounds. Achieving therapeutic outcomes with CAP necessitates precise treatment doses. Current CAP devices are constrained by their capability of delivering a single dose to a single sample, limiting dose optimization. We propose a novel “one exposure, multiple-dose delivery” strategy by programming gas flows. This approach facilitates efficient screening of optimal CAP dose by distributing feed gas through boundary-conditioned transport channels to generate multiple, flux-varied gas streams, which ignite plasmas with diverse chemical compositions and dose gradients across samples. Our developed demonstration device, capable of administering three doses to sixteen samples, significantly reduces experimental complexity, particularly when handling large candidate doses or samples for treatment. Leveraging multiplexed treatment, we capably optimize the CAP dose to effectively eradicate the liver cancer cell line of Huh7 and bacteria of S. aureus within one exposure. Furthermore, we find manipulating gas flow velocities allows targeted generation of short-lived species. This approach disentangles the roles of short-lived and long-lived RONS in therapeutic applications, offering critical insights into their bio-functional mechanisms. The concept of multiplexed dose treatment with fluidic manipulation promises to catalyze the development of high-efficiency CAP devices and advance research in CAP-based therapies.

Staphylococcus aureus enterotoxins (SEs) are major foodborne contaminants that pose severe threats to public health. In this study, we developed a multi-channel microfluidic biosensing chip featuring a MNPs-ssDNA-AuNPs sandwich structure system, which integrated specificity aptamer-functionalized magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) and ssDNA chain-amplified gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) signal probes. The chip achieved uniform liquid distribution, efficient fluid mixing, and high-throughput analysis, while multi-ssDNA probe design facilitated powerful fluorescence signals. Notably, the system enabled simultaneous detection of three classical serotypes-Staphylococcal enterotoxin A (SEA), B (SEA) and C 1 (SEC 1 )-on a single chip within 15 min. The biosensor exhibited highly sensitive and specific fluorescence responses in the range of 10 2 -10 7 fg/mL, with limits of detection of 9.19 fg/mL (SEA), 9.67 fg/mL (SEB) and 11.66 fg/mL (SEC 1 ). In addition, spiked recoveries in milk samples ranged from 89.00 % to 110.40 % (RSDs < 5 %). By overcoming the limitations of single-target detection paradigms, this study offers a convenient, sensitive and visual biosensing platform for rapid, high-throughput screening of SEs, which is essential for comprehensive risk assessment in food safety monitoring.

Cumbersome preprocessing and specialized manual operations in clinical blood samples remain a significant challenge for achieving high sensitivity and accurate quantification in point-of-care testing. In this paper, a finger-driven integrated microfluidic chip based on visualization of single nanoparticle scattering was proposed for the detection of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in the whole blood. To control on-chip fluid, a finger-driven module based on a Tesla valve was designed to unidirectionally regulate fluid mixing and separation in the microchannel. In addition, a membrane separation unit was designed to efficiently separate blood cells and serum, reducing interference from blood cells in the detection process. For quantitative PSA concentration detection, a Multi-functional core-satellite magnetic probe was constructed by using the principle of complementary base pairing of ligands on the surface of gold nanoparticles and magnetic beads. In the presence of target PSA, the constructed core-satellite nanostructure was decomposed, producing a characteristic fluorescence signal and releasing gold nanoparticles with green scattering spots under dark-field microscopy. By correlating the concentration with the number of green scattering spots, cancer risk levels were displayed intuitively using a traffic light system. This biosensor achieves an ultra-low detection limit of 0.5 pg/mL for PSA. Due to the ultra-sensitive ability in detection, the monitoring of PSA concentrations for patients during treatment was also demonstrated. Compared with other methods, this proposed microfluidic assay technology has the advantages of small sample volume, minimal operation, high sensitivity and accuracy. Overall, this biosensor provides a new approach for cancer recurrence monitoring and early diagnosis.

Phase change flow boiling heat transfer in microchannel is a very efficient thermal management mode for high-power electronics/devices cooling. However, achieving comprehensive enhancement of flow boiling heat transfer performance at low power consumption is still challenging. Herein, we devised and manufactured a teardrop-like micro-pin-fin coated stable copper hydroxide nanotubes array chip surfaces (S-Nanotube), demonstrating their exceptional enhancement in flow boiling heat transfer efficiency. A series of experiments were conducted using HFE-7100 as a working fluid within a semi-open microchannel. Compared to the smooth surface, the critical heat flux (CHF) and the maximum boiling heat transfer coefficient (HTC) of the S-Nanotube is increased by 82.1 % (from 45.1 to 72.9 and then to 82.1 W/cm 2 ) and 140.5 % (from 5955 to 11,325 and then to 14,316 W/m 2 ·K) at extremely low-pressure drop (≤4 kPa), showing a high coefficient of performance (COP). The temperature of the onset of nucleate boiling on the S-Nanotube surface is reduced by 26.4 %, and the heat flux is greatly increased in a small wall temperature variations (Δ T ≤ 10 °C). In situ observation and analysis of the surface properties and the bubble dynamics, the S-Nanotube chip promotes the phase change heat transfer process by providing massive nucleation sites, reducing bubbles size and residence time, and enhancing the wicking wetting capacity. These findings provide guidance for the rational design of boiling heat transfer-enhanced surfaces and heat sinks and point the way to achieving efficient thermal management of power devices.

Blood potassium and creatinine levels are critical indicators for managing chronic kidney disease (CKD). In response to the need for home monitoring and emergency care, point-of-care diagnostic technologies based on microsystems have emerged, nevertheless they remain limited in portability and speed for direct in whole blood samples measurement. To enable direct blood detection of potassium and creatinine for effective CKD management, this study presents a novel on-chip self-driven dual-channel optical microsensor designed for real-time monitoring of potassium and creatinine levels in whole blood. Utilizing 3D printing technology to design and fabricate microstructures, and integrating microchannels with a filtration layer, this microsensor requires only 10 μL of blood for single-pass sample filtration and dual-parameter detection. A novel passive blood sample pumping method is proposed, utilizing internal and external pressure differentials along with internal hydrophilic properties to facilitate sample flow into the detection chambers. Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and photodiodes, positioned on either side of the detection chamber, are employed to measure the concentrations of blood indicators. The detection results can be instantly handheld read and uploaded to the cloud via intelligent terminal, enabling seamless follow-up diagnostics and treatment. Through multiple rounds of testing on animal serum samples, whole blood samples, and real porcine blood samples, this microsensor demonstrated excellent linearity and accuracy. This innovative microsensor, designed for direct testing from a minimal volume of whole blood, holds significant potential for improving CKD management, offering a portable, reliable alternative for preoperative diagnostics and home-based chronic disease monitoring.

This article uses a combination of experimental and simulation methods for mutual verification to explore the possibility of nano aluminum thermite damaging chips and disrupting circuit systems. In terms of experiments, Fe2O3/SiO2/Al and SnO2/SiO2/Al aluminum thermites were prepared by physically mixing micro Al powder, nano SiO2, and nano metal oxide powder in a certain proportion. The binder was added and pressed into a charge column for ignition testing. The prepared aluminum thermite was characterized and its performance was tested using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS), and constant pressure combustion experiments. In terms of molecular dynamics simulation, Materials Studio software was used to investigate the interaction relationships between atoms in the aluminum thermite. The reaction process and properties of the aluminum thermite under adiabatic conditions at different initial temperatures were explored from the perspectives of potential energy, radial distribution function, mean square displacement, and self diffusion coefficient. The simulation results were compared with experimental reaction phenomena. The results show that the aluminum thermite prepared by physical method is uniformly mixed, various materials are fully adhered, well dispersed, and there is no agglomeration phenomenon. In terms of combustion performance, the overall performance of Fe2O3/SiO2/Al thermite is better than that of SnO2/SiO2/Al thermite, with higher combustion efficiency, higher reaction temperature, and the ability to maintain high temperature for a longer period of time. The combustion of Fe2O3/SiO2/Al aluminum thermite is more complete, and the reaction generates more elemental Si, which plays a positive role in the damage of chips. In terms of molecular dynamics simulation, the aluminum thermal reaction of Fe2O3/SiO2/Al at different initial temperatures is more stable, with a faster energy release rate and a higher total energy content than SnO2/SiO2/Al. The aluminum thermal reaction generates oxides of elemental Fe/Sn, Si, and Al. Overall, the diffusion coefficients of both aluminum thermites increase with the increase of initial temperature, and the intensity of the reaction also increases with the increase of initial temperature. Temperature has an accelerating effect on their diffusion, and SnO2/SiO2/Al has stronger diffusion ability than Fe2O3/SiO2/Al. The Fe2O3/SiO2/Al aluminum thermite has a better damage effect on chips, and the simulation and experimental results are consistent.

Endometrial clear cell cancer (ECCC) is an extremely rare and highly malignant subtype of endometrial cancer. For most ECCC patients, cancer metastasis is the major cause of death. To date, due to the complexity of cancer evolution and the small number of cases, the metastasis of ECCC at the early stage remains largely unknown. Herein, we modeled the early invasion-metastasis cascade of ECCC by coculturing the ECCC patient-derived tumor cells (PDTCs) and primary human vascular endothelial cells on a microfluidic chip. With the chip, we for the first time replicated the dynamic migration of PDTCs into the surrounding stroma, including the intravasation and extravasation of PDTCs through the capillaries/microvessels, and presented the changes in the morphology and permeability of capillaries, with the decreased diameter and the increased permeability after cancer metastasis. We found that PDTCs were more invasive than the common endometrial adenocarcinoma cells. In addition, we preliminarily explored the inhibition of drugs on the early PDTC infiltration. This study provides new ideas for better understanding of ECCC evolution.

Concentration gradient generation plays a pivotal role in advancing applications across drug screening, chemical synthesis, and biomolecular studies, yet conventional methods remain constrained by labor-intensive workflows, limited throughput, and inflexible gradient control. This study presents a novel multilayer microfluidic chip leveraging shear flow-driven partitioning–recombination mechanisms to enable the flexible and high-throughput generation of concentration gradient droplets. The chip integrates interactive upper and lower polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) layers, where sequential fluid distribution and recombination are achieved through circular and radial channels while shear forces from the oil phase induce droplet formation. Numerical simulations validated the dynamic pressure-driven concentration gradient formation, demonstrating linear gradient profiles across multiple outlets under varied flow conditions. The experimental results revealed that the shear flow mode significantly enhances mixing uniformity and droplet generation efficiency compared to continuous flow operations, attributed to intensified interfacial interactions within contraction–expansion serpentine channels. By modulating hydrodynamic parameters such as aqueous- and oil-phase flow rates, this system achieved tunable gradient slopes and droplet sizes, underscoring the intrinsic relationship between flow dynamics and gradient formation. The proposed device eliminates reliance on complex channel networks, offering a compact and scalable platform for parallelized gradient generation. This work provides a robust framework for optimizing microfluidic-based concentration gradient systems, with broad implications for high-throughput screening, combinatorial chemistry, and precision biomolecular assays.

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a powerful fingerprint spectroscopic technique capable of detecting trace molecules, which finds extensive application potential in diverse fields. The SERS substrates with excellent Raman signal enhancement, scalability in large-scale fabrication, and long-term stability is of significant scientific interest and practical value. Herein, we report a hybrid SERS substrate, namely tip-Si@MoSxOy, which integrates a periodic tip-patterned Si metasurface with MoSxOy semiconductor nanostructures, to develop novel noble-metal-free SERS substrate with sensitive molecule detection performance. The engineered periodic Si metasurface enables broadband matrix resonance by coupling with incident light, significanlty amplifying the localized near-field intensity at the inter-element nanogap regions. Theoretical calculations show that the maximum E-field enhancement can be up to 511 times. Meanwhile, the MoSxOy semiconductor leads to modification of the the polarization of probe molecules due to the charge-transfer interactions enabling chemical mechanism SERS effect. These combined effects make the detection of rhodamine 6G (R6G) at concentrations as low as 10-9 M and enhancement factor as high as 107. Moreover, the hybrid substrate exhibits superior antioxidation properties, eliminating the requirement of inert storage environments necessary for traditional noble-metal-based SERS substrates. Also, the MoSxOy semiconductor nanosructures are covalently bonded to the metasurface, ensuring structural stability without the need for post-transfer processes. Therefore, our work provides a novel approach to develop hybrid substrates with improved SERS performance, which is readily achievable and is expected to attract more research enthusiasm in the future.
