Halide perovskites have attracted enormous attention as a novel optoelectronic material showing bright emission recently. In this paper, we chose CsPbX 3 nanocrystals (NCs) as an example to study the structural, morphological and optical properties . We have synthesized monodispersed colloidal inorganic cesium lead halide perovskites (CsPbX 3 , X = Cl, Br and I, or mixed lead halide CsPb(Cl/Br) 3 and CsPb(Br/I) 3 ) NCs with various morphologies and brightly luminescent properties. The emission wavelength of resulting CsPbX 3 NCs can be tuned from 440 nm to 696 nm by varying the amount of different PbX 2 (X = Cl, Br and I), while maintaining high quantum yields up to 95% and narrow emission spectra . The average lifetime of the NCs is several ns to hundred with changing the composition . The blinking of the NCs in terms of a binary (on/off) process is different from II-VI quantum dots . Interestingly, we find that CsPbBr 3 NCs to Cs 4 PbBr 6 NCs or a mixture of CsPbBr 3 NCs and Cs 4 PbBr 6 NCs were obtained by adjusting the amount of oleic acid (OA)-Cs precursor. The optical properties of these NCs have been controlled by varying their composition. Moreover, the injection speed of Cs-OA precursor enables the control of CsPbI 3 NCs with different morphology, which can be tuned from litter nanoparticles to uniform nanorods . This finding can serve as an ideal platform for the investigation of fundamental properties.

The interplay between solid electrolytes and electrodes is of vital importance to the performance of all-solid-state Li batteries. Recently, halide superionic conductors have emerged as a new family of high-performance solid electrolytes, but their compatibility with Li metal, i.e., the anode with the highest theoretical capacity, has not been systematically studied. Here, we investigate the interaction between Li metal and two representative halide solid electrolytes: Li 3 YCl 6 and Li 3 YBr 6 . Both materials are found to form interphases with Li, similar to most solid electrolytes. However, the interphases observed here contain electronic conducting components, which are detrimental to their compatibility with Li. By elucidating this phenomenon, the present study provides guiding principles for improving the Li compatibility of halide solid electrolytes.

Ag speciation in a chloride medium was dependent upon the Cl/Ag ratio after releasing into surface water. In this study, the photoreaction of in situ formed Ag–Cl species and their effects on aniline photochlorination were systematically investigated. Our results suggested that formation of chloroaniline was strongly relevant to the Cl/Ag ratio and could be interpreted using the thermodynamically expected speciation of Ag in the presence of Cl − . AgCl was the main species responsible for the photochlorination of aniline. Both photoinduced hole and •OH drove the oxidation of Cl − to radical •Cl, which promoted the chlorination of aniline. Ag 0 formation was observed from the surface plasmon resonance absorption during AgCl photoreaction. This study revealed that Ag + released into Cl − -containing water may result in the formation of chlorinated intermediates of organic compounds under solar light irradiation.

Microstructure construction is an effective strategy for regulating the performance of energetic materials. Herein, CL-20@Al microspheres were fabricated by integrating porous CL-20 spherulites with Al via a rapid solvent–nonsolvent method. The results show that Al is uniformly distributed on the surface of CL-20 spherulites, and the resulting CL-20@Al microspheres possess a narrow particle size distribution, abundant nanoscale pores and enhanced dispersibility. Compared to the physical mixture, the CL-20@Al microspheres demonstrate significantly improved energy release performance, with increases of 10.4% in heat release, 33.3% in peak pressure, and 24.4% in pressurization rate. Laser ignition further reveals a 72.5% reduction in ignition delay time and a 66.8% increase in combustion rate. Meanwhile, the CL-20@Al microspheres also exhibit significantly reduced impact sensitivity compared to CL-20 spherulites. The porous structure, intimate Al/CL-20 interfacial contact, and uniform Al distribution on the porous surface collectively enhance the laser ignition and energy release of CL-20@Al microspheres.

Direct electrolysis of seawater for hydrogen production offers a vital route to circumvent freshwater limitations and advance a sustainable hydrogen economy. Herein, we present a novel catalyst design strategy based on the co-doping of Ru atoms with strong chloride affinity and Cr atoms serving as Lewis acid centers into a nickel phosphide matrix (RuCr-Ni 3 P). This material is a highly active anode for direct alkaline seawater electrolysis, offering outstanding oxygen evolution reaction (OER) selectivity and operational longevity exceeding 4000 h under industrially relevant conditions. Mechanistic investigations reveal that chloride ions are not merely detrimental impurities, but are selectively captured by Ru sites to form a dynamic Ru–Cl coordination motif. This interaction electronically modulates adjacent Ni active centers, facilitating the generation of high-valent Ni >3+ species and switching the dominant OER pathway from the lattice oxygen mechanism (LOM) to the more efficient adsorbate evolution mechanism (AEM). Simultaneously, Cr sites promote the formation of Cr–OH species, which cooperatively create a localized alkaline microenvironment favorable for OER on the high-valent Ni centers. This dual-site synergistic mechanism, wherein Ru sites regulate chloride and Ni/Cr sites drive catalysis, effectively transforms Cl − from a performance-limiting species into a chemical switch that concurrently enhances both activity and stability.

Electrocatalytic dehalogenation can effectively detoxify chlorinated organic pollutants (COPs) by cleaving C–Cl bonds in wastewater treatment, however, it often fails to achieve complete mineralization. In particular, the fate of the released Cl - has often been overlooked and whether they can be recycled and reutilized to facilitate pollutant degradation has remained unclear. Herein, a reduction–oxidation cascade system is constructed, in which Cl - liberated during electrocatalytic reduction is directly converted into reactive chlorine species (RCS) during the subsequent oxidation step, enabling complete mineralization of organic pollutants. Quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy (EPR) confirm the in situ reutilization of detached Cl - . Laser scanning confocal microscopy (LSCM) visualizes the adsorption and transformation of Cl - on the electrode surface, while ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) calculations reveal the interfacial concentration distribution of Cl - and the energy profiles of its migration. This work establishes a cascade electrocatalytic strategy that couples reduction and oxidation, enabling chlorine reutilization and providing a sustainable pathway for the removal and resource recovery of COPs.

Groundwater is a critical component of water resources and plays a fundamental role in maintaining ecological stability and supporting economic development. Industrial activities constitute a major source of groundwater contamination. Controlling groundwater pollution in industrial production facilities has become a key priority in environmental management. In this study, we present a high-performance ex situ electrochemical remediation system designed to treat contaminated saline (Cl–Na type) groundwater from an operational coastal chemical park. The system, optimized with a Ti/RuO 2 –IrO 2 anode and Ni cathode, achieved complete removal of ammonium nitrogen (100%) and converted 79% of total nitrogen to harmless N 2 within 45 min at a current density of 5.0 mA cm −2 . Energy consumption was as low as 1.2 kWh·m −3 . Remediation efficacy was primarily driven by in situ–generated reactive chlorine species (RCS) (e.g., Cl•, Cl 2 • - , ClO•), whose formation was significantly enhanced by the presence of bicarbonate (HCO 3 − ). Notably, the system exhibited superior removal efficiency for persistent humic acid–like dissolved organic matter (DOM) compared with biodegradable protein-like DOM, resulting in a 71% reduction in overall fluorescence intensity. The system maintained robust performance across different real groundwater samples (energy consumption: 1.2-2.1 kWh·m −3 ) and demonstrated excellent electrode stability. These results demonstrate that the technology is an economically viable and effective approach for on-site remediation of contaminated groundwater in challenging coastal industrial environments.

Polyamide thin-film composite (PA TFC) membranes synthesized via conventional interfacial polymerization (IP) often underperform in Cl − /SO 4 2− separation due to their subpar spatial architectures. This study presents a novel strategy to fabricate advanced anion-selective nanofiltration (NF) membranes by functionalizing PA selective layer pore walls with nitrogen/oxygen-containing heterocyclic compounds (crown ether and cyclen) to tailor intrapore chemical microenvironments. Both experimental validations and molecular simulation results demonstrate that precise regulation of chemical interactions between the membrane matrix and permeation species (NaCl/Na 2 SO 4 ) enables controlled tuning of diffusion energy barriers for anions traversing the membrane. Beyond size exclusion and charge repulsion mechanisms, we employ transition state theory to elucidate the fundamental Cl − /SO 4 2− separation mechanism. The distinct roles of these compounds in modulating IP reaction kinetics and their impacts on membrane microstructure are systematically investigated. Integration of heterocycles into the PA network yields more hydrophilic, less densely packed membranes. Resultant cyclen-modified membranes achieve exceptional separation performance (water flux of 26.65 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 , Cl − /SO 4 2− selectivity of 223), while 15-crown-5-modified membranes exhibit remarkable Cl − /SO 4 2− selectivity (690, Na 2 SO 4 rejection of 99.71 %) with maintained water flux (17.50 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 ). These modified membranes also exhibit robust long-term stability and excellent fouling resistance. This work establishes a novel pathway for developing high-performance Cl − /SO 4 2− separation membranes through engineered control of ion diffusion energy barrier.

The development of high-performance infrared (IR) nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals with ultra-wide bandgaps (>4.0 eV) is crucial for advancing laser technologies, yet achieving a balance between wide bandgaps and strong NLO responses remains challenging. A trivalent aliovalent substitution strategy is reported in this work to engineer diamond-like (DL) halides, CuAlX4 (X = Cl, Br), which simultaneously achieve record-wide bandgaps (4.25 eV for CuAlCl4 and 4.09 eV for CuAlBr4), high laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT) values (46.2 MW cm−2 and 33.9 MW cm−2, respectively), and competitive second-harmonic generation (SHG) coefficients (3.52 pm V−1 and 7.12 pm V−1 at 2.09 μm, respectively). Structural characterization and first-principles calculations reveal that the introduction of Al3+ induces asymmetric [CuX4] tetrahedra and cationic vacancies, breaking inversion symmetry and enhancing hyperpolarizability. The synergistic effects of increased valence electron concentration and optimized tetrahedral alignment result in exceptional optical properties, including broad transparency and type-I phase-matching behavior. This work demonstrates the potential of high-valence substitution for designing DL halides with ultra-wide bandgaps and robust NLO performance, offering new insights for IR optoelectronic applications.

The interaction of disinfectants with bromide/iodide ions and natural organic matter (NOM) generates brominated/iodinated disinfection byproducts (Br/I-DBPs), known for their heightened cytotoxicity and genotoxicity relative to chlorinated DBPs. This study investigated Br/I-DBP formation during sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) disinfection of lignin-containing synthetic water by quantifying adsorbable organic halogens (AOX) and trihalomethanes (THMs). Disinfection of bromide-containing water yielded a bromide ion (Br−) to adsorbable organic bromine (AOBr) conversion rate of approximately 60%, with bromine within THMs accounting for about 30% of the total AOBr, indicating significant brominated DBP formation where THMs represent a major fraction. Conversely, iodide ion (I−) conversion to adsorbable organic iodine (AOI) is minimal, suggesting negligible iodinated DBP formation under NaClO disinfection. Examination of key parameters revealed that brominated THM (Br-THM) formation decreased with increasing lignin concentration, while iodinated THM (I-THM) formation increased. The effect of chlorine dose differed: Br-THM formation exhibited an initial increase followed by a decrease at higher doses, whereas I-THM formation consistently decreased. Both Br-THM and I-THM formation increased with higher bromide or iodide ion concentration and with increasing pH. These results highlight the distinct pathways and influencing factors governing brominated versus iodinated DBP formation in lignin-containing waters disinfected with hypochlorite.

Metal halide perovskites with broad optical absorption and long carrier lifetime are considered as ideal photocatalysts. However, their poor stability in water greatly impedes their application in photocatalytic H 2 evolution because they lose their crystalline structure in water. Herein, we proclaim a new class of photocatalysts: all-inorganic Cs-Cu-Cl perovskite quantum dots (QDs). It exhibits a high photocatalytic hydrogen production rate of ∼ 3.1 mmol/g/h without any cocatalyst under AM 1.5-G solar irradiation (100 mW/cm 2 ). Especially, it remains the high activity for up to 330 h without apparent deterioration of the hydrogen production rate. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the Cu site works as the electron and proton absorption sites as the H 2 production active center. To our best knowledge, there is no report of metal halide perovskites as water-stable photocatalysts. This work opens an innovative way for guiding the exploration of metal halide perovskites photocatalysts for stable photocatalytic H 2 evolution.

Nanofiltration (NF) technology is crucial in alleviating global water scarcity through desalination. Overcoming the permselectivity trade-off to improve both the permeance and rejection of polyamide (PA) nanofiltration (NF) membranes beyond the log–log upper bound remains a significant scientific challenge. Herein, we explored advanced ion-transport barriers by constructing a chitin-assisted PA NF membrane, incorporating a biomass-derived carboxylated chitin nanofiber (CO-ChNF) interlayer that simultaneously modulates the pore architecture and surface charge of the PA layer. CO-ChNFs, sustainably extracted from squid cartilage and featuring rich carboxyl and amino functionalities, effectively suppressed the diffusion kinetics of amine monomers during interfacial polymerization. The engineered CO-ChNF/PA membranes demonstrated a sharper pore size distribution and an enhanced charge density, providing an ideal platform to systematically investigate the mechanisms behind ion sieving at PA microinterfaces by exploring ion dehydration energy and electrostatic repulsion energy. Leveraging the enhanced transport barriers, the optimal CO-ChNF/PA membrane achieved impressive performances with a permeance of up to 31.4 L m–2 h–1 bar–1 and a superior Cl–/SO42– selectivity of 91.3, surpassing most commercial and reported NF membranes. This work sheds light on the regulatory mechanism of the chitin-assisted interfacial polymerization reaction and introduces an innovative approach for efficient Cl–/SO42– sieving.
