Electrochemical water splitting, the most direct and clean method used for the production of hydrogen, requires highly efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts that can accelerate hydrogen evolution reactions (HER) and oxygen evolution reactions (OER) by overcoming their kinetics barriers. Herein, self-supported F, N codoping CoP nanosheets (denoted as FN-CoP NS) are prepared as efficient and stable bifunctional electrocatalysts. Codoping of F and N neutralizes the electronegativity of surface P-O by cleaving the Co-P-O of non-metallic P sites on the surface (O derived from the surface oxidation). This contributes to an increased Co 2+ content with considerable adjustable electronegativity and also optimizes HER and OER processes. As a result, FN-CoP NS requires 66 and 241 mV overpotentials to deliver the current density of 10 mA cm −2 during HER and OER, respectively. A full water electrolyzer equipped FN-CoP NS as both cathode and anode only require 1.57 V to drive the current density of 10 mA cm −2 and to sustain 50 mA cm −2 for 48 h. This work adjusts the electronic structure of metal phosphides by a double anion codoping strategy, which provides a reference value for the rational design of efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts.

Photocatalytic CO 2 reduction has been regarded as an ideal method to simulate photosynthesis for achieving carbon neutralization. However, poor charge transfer efficiency limits its development. Herein, an efficient Co/CoP@C catalyst was prepared with compact contact of Co and CoP layer by using MOF as precursor. At the interface of Co/CoP, the difference in functionality between the two phases may result in uneven distribution of electrons, thus forming a self-driven space-chare region. In this region, spontaneous electron transfer is guaranteed, thus facilitating the effective separation of photogenerated carriers as well as boosting the utilization of solar energy. Furthermore, the electron density of active site Co in CoP is increased and more active sites are exposed, which promotes the adsorption and activation of CO 2 molecules. Together with suitable redox potential, low energy barrier for *COOH formation and easy desorption of CO, the reduction rate of CO 2 catalyzed by Co/CoP@C is 4 times higher than that of CoP@C.

The development of electrocatalysts for efficient water splitting is a pivotal and challenging task. Transition-metal phosphides (TMPs) have been known as one of the most promising candidates for the efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) due to their favorable intrinsic reactivity. However, structural engineering related to the gas bubbles evolution and tiny regulation of components concerned with the electronic structure remained as a significant challenge that requires further optimization. Herein, the nanoarrays (NAs) composed of ultrasmall Co2P and CoP nanoparticle-embedded N-doped carbon matrix (Co2P&CoP@N–C) are prepared and demonstrated an overpotential of 62.8 ± 4.7 mV at 10 mA cm–2 in 1.0 M KOH. The nanoarray-structured electrocatalyst revealed the superaerophobicity and facilitates the detachment of the in situ formed hydrogen gas bubbles, ensuring abundant catalytic sites and electrode–electrolyte interface for the mass transfer process. The amount of P doping modulated the local electron density around Co and P atoms, which attains a favorable compromise to afford sufficient electrons for the electrocatalysis and inhibit the negative influence of H2 desorption. Significantly, the lowered overpotential induced by the electrocatalyst surface architecture is much stronger than that of the component content and promotes the electrocatalytic activity.

Transition metal phosphates have proved to be promising electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reactions (HER) of water splitting, however, further increasing their active sites and catalytic activity remains a major challenge. Herein, accordion-like Co-MOF with layered structure was synthesized. After subsequent carbonization and phosphidization, lamellar heterostructured Co/CoP nanocrystals encapsulated in a P, N co-doped C matrix (Co/CoP@PNC) was obtained. Heterojunction provides abundant active sites and improves electron transfer rate. Additionally, the effect of phosphating degree on the electrocatalytic activity was studied. In the alkaline electrolyte , the current density of the optimized Co/CoP@PNC-10 for HER reached 10 mA cm −2 at overpotential of 137 mV in 1.0 M KOH, which was superior to most of transition metal-based electrocatalysts. This work provides new guidance for the design and development of transition metal-based electrocatalysts.

Graphical CoP for photocatalysis : Sphericalmesoporous SBA-15-supported CoP nanoparticlecatalysts tuning the highly efficient photocatalytic CO-and H 2 -generating pathways with product selectivity of up to 76.3 %and 99.9 % through switching solvent, respectively, were in situ fabricated by CoP embedded on the surface and interior of the porous s-SBA-15. The highly active spherical hybrid catalysts with diameters of 3–8 μm for robust selective CO 2 photoreduction and hydrogen production by switching solvent, CoP/(i)s-SBA-15 and CoP/(o)s-SBA-15, were in situ synthesized for the first time by incorporating CoP nanoparticles on the interior and outside of the spherical mesoporous Santa Barbara Amorphous (s-SBA)-type material s-SBA-15. CoP/(i)s-SBA-15 has a larger pore diameter of ∼9.5 nm, relative to ∼5.7 nm of CoP/(o)s-SBA-15, and a calculated Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area of ∼214 m 2 g −1 compared with ∼336 m 2 g −1 for the latter. In comparison with bare CoP, the composites exhibited excellent catalytic CO- and H 2 -generating performance with product selectivity of up to 76.3 % and 99.9 % through switching solvents containing Ru-based photosensitizer under ambient conditions, respectively. The influences of various solvents and electron donors, as well as the amounts of H 2 O, and catalyst on reaction kinetics for CO 2 reduction and H 2 production, and intrinsic properties of both catalysts were investigated and compared.

The development of high-efficiency and low-cost oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts has attracted increasing research attention. Herein, we report a novel nanocomposite of N-doped CoP nanoparticles embedded in porous carbon nanofibers (N–CoP@NPCNFs) synthesized using zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67)@Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers (ZIF-67@PNFs) as the precursor through carbonization, oxidation and phosphidation with N-doping. The fabricated N 1 –CoP@NPCNFs-900 shows outstanding electrocatalytic properties for OER due to a synergistic effect between the carbon nanofibers and the N-doped CoP nanoparticles. It exhibits a low overpotential of only 266 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , a small Tafel slope of 70 mV dec −1 and excellent durability for OER in 1.0 M KOH. Therefore, the obtained N 1 –CoP@NPCNFs-900 is promising for application as a high-efficiency and low-cost OER electrocatalyst.

Ammonia borane (NH 3 BH 3 , AB) is promising for chemical hydrogen storage; however, current systems for rapid hydrogen production are limited by the expensive noble metal catalysts required for AB hydrolysis. Here we report the design and synthesis of a highly efficient and robust non-noble-metal catalyst for the hydrolysis of AB at 298 K (TOF = 89.56 mol H2 min −1 mol Co −1 ). Experiments and density functional theory calculations were performed to explore the catalyst’s hybrid nanoparticle heterostructure and its catalytic mechanism. The catalyst comprised nitrogen-doped carbon dots confining CoO and CoP , and exhibited strong interface-induced synergistic catalysis for AB hydrolysis that effectively decreased the energy barriers for the dissociation of both AB and water molecules. The co-doping of N and P introduced numerous defects, and further regulated the reactivity of the carbon layers. The heterogeneous interface design technique presented here provides a new strategy for developing efficient and inexpensive non-noble-metal catalysts that may be applicable in other fields related to energy catalysis.

CoP and Co 2 P were prepared by temperature-programmed reduction of the mixtures of Co(OH) 2 and H 3 PO 3 with stoichiometric P/Co ratios, but their surfaces were still enriched in phosphorus. Based on the product distributions of the hydrodesulfurization (HDS) of dibenzothiophene (DBT), 1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-dibenzothiophene (TH-DBT), and 1,2,3,4,4a,9b-hexahydro-dibenzothiophene (HH-DBT), a reaction network of DBT HDS was proposed and the mechanisms of the cleavage of different C S bonds in DBT and its hydrogenated intermediates were discussed. CoP was much more active and more nitrogen-tolerant than Co 2 P, which make it a promising HDS catalyst. The HDS reactions over CoP and Co 2 P followed a pseudo-first-order kinetics and a pseudo-zero-order kinetics, respectively. Piperidine strongly inhibited the hydrogenation/dehydrogenation reactions and the direct desulfurization of DBT, but its inhibition on the desulfurization of TH-DBT and HH-DBT were less pronounced. The active surfaces of CoP and Co 2 P in HDS reactions can be cobalt phosphosulfide phases.

It is an indisputable fact that electrochemical performance is always ameliorated by introducing proper phosphorus vacancy defect into electrode materials. In this work, the lattice-like CoP grown on the nickel foam with appropriate concentration of vacancies is fabricated successfully. The specific capacitance of 1865 F g −1 is improved by 1.7 times compared with the pristine CoP of 1125 F g −1 at the current density of 1 A g −1 . Meanwhile, the deliberately designed electrode also possesses great stability of retention rate up to 90% after 5000 cycles. Before the electrode is assembled into the asymmetric supercapacitor , the potential window is altered by electrode potential blend technique in order to utilize capacitances of anode and cathode efficiently. Subsequently, the supercapacitor is studied in the electrochemistry systematically. The results show that power density is up to 737 W kg −1 as energy density is 31 W h kg −1 . Meanwhile, the capacitance retention rate remains 88% after 5000 cycles. It is a meaningful guide for exploring efficient energy storage equipment that appropriate vacancies are injected into electrode materials, and optimal potential windows are obtained via electrode potential blend technology.

Designing efficient non-precious electrocatalysts to facilitate overall water splitting is crucial and highly desirable but remains challenging. In this study, we synthesized nitrogen-doped carbon-decorated CoP@FeCoP yolk-shelled micro-polyhedras (denoted as CoP@FeCoP/NC YSMPs) via the phosphorization of ZIF-67@Co-Fe Prussian blue analogues YSMPs. The yolk-shelled construction and nitrogen-doped carbon matrix can effectively reduce the degree of CoP agglomeration, which is beneficial for increasing the specific surface area and active sites of the catalysts. The synergistic effect of yolk-shelled structure and nigtrogen-doped carbon matrix also optimizes the electronic structure and enhances the electrocatalytic activity of CoP@FeCoP/NC YSMPs. In an alkaline electrolyte, the overpotentials of hydrogen evolution reaction and oxygen evolution reaction only need 141 and 238 mV, respectively, to drive the current density of 10 mA cm −2 . When a two-electrode water splitting device was conducted with the as-prepared catalyst, it required only a low cell voltage of 1.68 V to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm −2 and displayed outstanding stability over 20 h. This work offers insights into the facile, controllable synthesis strategy of various non-precious metal nanomaterials for high-efficiency water splitting electrocatalysis.

The design and manufacture of effective non-noble metal catalysts for the H 2 evolution reaction (HER) are urgent for realizing a cost-effective hydrogen production . We report herein on flower-like structures consisting of NiCoP–CoP heterostructural nanowires grown directly on the hierarchically porous nickel framework (NiCoP–CoP/Ni/NF) to achieve a highly efficient HER in alkaline solution (1.0 M KOH). The NiCoP–CoP/Ni/NF is synthesized by electrodeposition of porous Ni layers on Ni foam, followed by simple hydrothermal reaction and phosphorization. For HER, the binder-free NiCoP–CoP/Ni/NF electrode can reach 10 mA cm −2 current density at a quite low overpotential of 49 mV, because of the combination of porous Ni layers and highly active NiCoP–CoP nanowires. In addition, the NiCoP/CoP heterostructures exhibited remarkable stability under the long-term durability test. This work provides a new strategy that combines electrodeposition and hydrothermal reaction to synthesize effective HER catalysts.

CoP was synthesized in situ on the surface of CdS nanowires using a cobalt–ammine complex as a precursor. The generated CoP@CdS photocatalyst was well characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, selected-area electron diffraction, and diffuse reflectance spectra. A more efficient charge transfer was successfully achieved owing to the close contact between CoP and CdS. The hybrid photocatalyst showed excellent activity for the reduction of nitroarenes to the corresponding anilines or azobenzene compounds in water. In present work, hydrogen evolution and nitro reduction were concurrent and with the consumption of substrate, the rate of hydrogen evolution increased. The driving force for the reduction originated from the activated hydrogen species in the photocatalytic reaction rather than from dihydrogen. The photocatalytic activity of as-prepared CoP@CdS in situ is comparable to that of the catalysts formed using a noble metal loaded onto CdS. Mechanistic investigation showed that the condensation route is the major pathway for nitro reduction in the present system, and azo compounds could be obtained with less irradiation time, while aniline will be obtained via long-time irradiation.
