Cr doped mesoporous silica spheres for propane dehydrogenation in the presence of CO2: Effect of Cr adding time in sol-gel process

Hao-Miao Wang,Yan Chen,Xi Yan,Wan-Zhong Lang,Ya-Jun Guo

CrO X- doped mesoporous silica spheres (Cr/MSS-X) were prepared by adding Cr precursors at different preparation stages using sol-gel method (X = 1, 2, 3) and incipient-wetness impregnation method (X = 4), and their catalytic performances of propane oxidative dehydrogenation were evaluated in the presence of CO 2 . The results indicate that for the Cr/MSS-X catalysts prepared by sol-gel method, Cr adding time significantly influences the Cr dispersion, surface physic-chemical properties and their catalytic performance. Cr/MSS-2 catalysts obtained by adding Cr precursor after the tetraethyl-orthosilicate (TEOS) show the optimal catalytic activity. Although Cr/MSS-1 also shows good CrO X dispersion, part CrO X wrapped in the center of mesoporous silica spheres presents weaker catalytic activity. In this work, the catalyst preparation method is quite facile and has the potential to be utilized for industrial production.

Efficient Charge Separation via MoSe2 Nanosheets with Tunable 1T Phase Contents: Piezoreduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) and Piezodegradation of RhB

Mianmian Wu,Nan Li,Shixiang Zuo,Wenjing Shen,Guifang Sun,Qingfei Li,Minghao Shi,Jiangquan Ma

Piezocatalysis is a promising technology to address environmental pollution by converting mechanical energy into chemical energy. Herein, MoSe2 nanosheets with different 1T phase percentages (ranging from 30 to 80%) were constructed by adjusting hydrothermal temperature. Moreover, the roles of phase engineering in the piezocatalysis were thoroughly investigated by degrading rhodamine B and reducing Cr(VI) in ultrasonic vibration conditions. In particular, MoSe2 prepared at 220 °C (MoSe2-220) exhibits ultrahigh observed constant kobs and degradation rate k, which is superior to most reported catalysts to date. The experimental results indicate that the introduction of the 1T phase increases the active sites of the material, improves the conductivity, and inhibits the recombination of electrons and holes. Moreover, an internal electric field in the 2H phase induced by piezoelectric polarization is facilitated to separate electron–hole pairs, enabling the degradation and reduction to proceed. The capture experiments and EPR tests further confirm that •O2– and •OH are main reactive species, and a rational mechanism is finally put forward. This study offers a clear understanding of phase engineering in piezocatalysis and provides an efficiency strategy to construct highly efficient piezocatalysts.

PANI/MCM-41 adsorption for removal of Cr(VI) ions and its application in enhancing electrokinetic remediation of Cr(VI)-contaminated soil

Yang Yanzhi,Xu Mingchen,Jin Wenlou,Jin Jiacheng,Dong Fan,Zhang Zhipeng,Yan Xin,Shao Min,Wan Yushan

In this study, a polyaniline/mesoporous silica (PANI/MCM-41) composite material that can be used as a filler for permeable reactive barrier (PRB) was prepared by in situ polymerization. Firstly, the adsorption capacity of PANI/MCM-41 on Cr (VI) in solution was investigated. The results show that the prepared PANI/MCM-41 exhibits a significant Cr (VI) adsorption capacity (~ 340 mg/g), and the adsorption process is more accurately described by the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The thermodynamic functions evidenced that the Cr(VI) adsorption was an endothermic spontaneous process. In addition, adsorption–desorption cycle experiments proved the excellent reusability of the material. Subsequently, the material was utilized as a filler in the PRB for the remediation of Cr(VI)-contaminated soil using electrokinetic-permeable reactive barrier (EK-PRB) technology. The results show that compared with traditional electrokinetic remediation, the use of PANI/MCM-41 as an active filler can enlarge the current during remediation and enhance the conductivity of soil, which increases the removal rates of total Cr and Cr(VI) in soil (17.4% and 10.2%).

Defect-Tailoring and Titanium Substitution in Metal–Organic Framework UiO-66-NH2 for the Photocatalytic Degradation of Cr(VI) to Cr(III)

Yi Feng,Qian Chen,Mengjue Cao,Nan Ling,Jianfeng Yao

Defect engineering and surface chemistry are closely related to the performance of materials. In this work, the effects of Zr precursors and Ti substitution on the photocatalytic performance of UiO-66-NH2 are studied and analyzed from the perspective of defect engineering and surface chemistry. The findings show that when using ZrOCl2·8H2O as the Zr precursor combined with the postsynthetic treatment of Ti substitution, sample U-OCl-Ti shows significant improvement in Cr(VI) adsorption (20.9 mg/g) and photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI) under visible light. The improvement can be attributed to the highly defective framework and more -NH2 groups exposed on the surface; therefore the highest light absorption and lowest recombination rate of photogenerated electron–hole pairs are observed in U-OCl-Ti. The findings in this study contribute to a better understanding of how defects and surface chemistry affect the photocatalytic performance, thus providing some designing knowledge for the synthesis of UiO-66 or UiO-66-NH2 with high photocatalytic performance.

Magnetic solid-phase extraction combined with graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry for speciation of Cr(III) and Cr(VI) in environmental waters

Hong-mei Jiang,Ting Yang,Yan-hong Wang,Hong-zhen Lian,Xin Hu

A new approach of magnetic solid phase extraction (MSPE) coupled with graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GFAAS) has been developed for the speciation of Cr(III) and Cr(VI) using zincon-immobilized silica-coated magnetic Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles (Zincon–Si–MNPs) as the MSPE absorbent. Cr(III) was quantitatively reserved on the absorbent at pH 9.1 while total Cr was reserved at pH 6.5. The absorbed Cr species were eluted by using 2   mol/L HCl and detected by GFAAS. The concentration of Cr(VI) could be calculated by subtracting Cr(III) from total Cr. All the parameters affecting the separation and extraction efficiency of Cr species such as pH, extraction time, concentration and volume of eluent , sample volume and influence of co-existing ions were systematically examined and the optimized conditions were established accordingly. The detection limit (LOD) of the method was 0.016 and 0.011   ng   mL −1 for Cr(III) and Cr(VI), respectively, with the enrichment factor of 100 and 150. The precisions of this method (Relative standard deviation, RSD, n =7) for Cr(III) and Cr(VI) at 0.1   ng   mL −1 were 6.0% and 6.2%, respectively. In order to validate the proposed method, a certified reference material of environmental water was analyzed, and the result of Cr speciation was in good agreement with the certified value. This MSPE–GFAAS method has been successfully applied for the speciation of Cr(III) and Cr(VI) in lake and tap waters with the recoveries of 88–109% for the spiked samples. Moreover, the MSPE separation mechanism of Cr(III) and Cr(VI) based on their adsorption–desorption on Zincon–Si–MNPs has been explained through various spectroscopic characterization.

Thermally converted oxide microstructure on ferritic stainless steel with Cu/Ni dual-layer coating for SOFC interconnect applications

Huixian Weng,Danyang Liu,Shujiang Geng,Gang Chen,Fuhui Wang

Cu/Ni dual-layer coating is applied to improve the performance of SUS 430 steel as solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) interconnects. Cu layer is deposited by electroplating, followed by magnetron sputtering Ni layer on top of Cu layer. The coated steels are evaluated in air at 800 °C in correspondence with SOFC cathode environment. Results showed that a considerable amount of Ni diffuses into the steel substrate, while Fe and Cr diffuse from the steel substrate into the coating during the initial oxidation. A (Ni,Fe) 3 O 4 spinel layer is initially formed on the scale surface. Cu diffuses outwards and eventually dopes into (Ni,Fe) 3 O 4 spinel to form (Ni,Fe,Cu) 3 O 4 spinel. The oxide scale evolved into a dual-layer structure of an inner Cr 2 O 3 layer and an outer layer of NiO mixed with spinels after 5 weeks of oxidation. Preoxidation treatment in 800 °C air for electroplated Cu coated steel prior to depositing Ni layer improves oxidation resistance and significantly decreases Cr outward diffusion after 5 weeks of oxidation. Moreover, the oxide scales formed on both Cu/Ni and CuO/Ni coated steels maintain low area specific resistance (ASR) after 5 weeks of oxidation.

Facile synthesis of sulfonated covalent organic framework for the adsorption of heavy metal ions

Heping Wang,Ting Wang,Rongrong Ma,Kai Wu,Honglan Li,Bang Feng,Cong Li,Yehua Shen

The sulfonated covalent organic frameworks (COF@SO 3 H) have been synthesized by a simple one-step solvothermal reaction and used to adsorb Cd 2+ , Co 2+ , and Cr 3+ metal ions from aqueous solution. The structure, composition and stability of as-prepared material were confirmed by FT-IR, PXRD, BET and TGA, and a fiber bundle-like COF@SO 3 H could be observed in the SEM and TEM images. The adsorption behaviors of Cd 2+ , Co 2+ , and Cr 3+ onto COF@SO 3 H were studied through batch adsorption experiments, and the obtained data were analyzed using various models. The adsorption process of the three ions can be better described by the Langmuir isotherm and the pseudo-second-order kinetics than other models tested, and the maximum adsorption capacities for Cd 2+ , Co 2+ and Cr 3+ at 298 K are 81.97, 77.52, and 105.26 mg g −1 , respectively. The thermodynamic parameters indicate that the adsorption of Cd 2+ onto COF@SO 3 H is spontaneous, which is more favorable than Co 2+ and Cr 3+ . Moreover, the adsorbed metal ions can be easily eluted by nitric acid or EDTA solution, and the COF@SO 3 H can be reused for more than 5 adsorption-elution cycles without obvious collapsing in structure and reducing in adsorption capacity. All the results suggested that the COF@SO 3 H could be used to the adsorption and removal of heavy metal ions from wastewater.

Efficient photoreduction of Cr(VI) on TiO2/functionalized activated carbon (TiO2/AC-AEMP): improved adsorption of Cr(VI) and induced transfer of electrons

Gao Zhao,Yang Hanpei,Fu Xiaofei,Jin Qiu,Wu Qiangshun,Kang Li,Wu Junming

Slow and random transfer of pollutants and photo-induced carriers on photocatalysts causes loss of efficiency in photodegradation of contaminants. Enhancing and directing mass transfer of them are considered as two major methods for improving the photodegradation of pollutants over photocatalysts. Here in this work, we focused on the design of a novel photocatalyst which not only accelerated the transfer rate of Cr(VI) and electrons but also provided specific transfer routes for them. By careful characterizations, it is indicated that 2-((2-(2-aminoethylamino)ethylimino)methyl)phenol (AEMP) was covalently attached onto activated carbon (AC), which enhanced Cr(VI) transfer from bulk solution to AC through electrostatic or coordinative interactions. The external mass transfer coefficient ( K f ) of Cr(VI) over TiO 2 /AC-AEMP was estimated as 1.75 × 10 −6  m s −1 , which was ~ 12.79 and ~ 5.96 times that of TiO 2 and TiO 2 /AC, respectively. Dense and homogeneous heterojunctions between AC and TiO 2 were acquired synchronically by forming Ti–O–C linkages, which increased traveling of electrons from TiO 2 to AC. Accordingly, Cr(VI) can capture photo-induced electrons on the surface of AC via concrete routes and then be reduced efficiently. The results showed that the photoreduction rate of Cr(VI) on TiO 2 /AC-AEMP reached to ~ 92.7%, and the overall photocatalytic activity of this well-designed TiO 2 /AC-AEMP has been enhanced significantly by 5.5 times compared to TiO 2 /AC. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of TiO 2 /AC-AEMP was mainly attributed to an improved synergetic process of mass transfer–induced adsorption–photoreduction by forming specific transfer routes for accelerative motion of Cr(VI) and electrons. This work provides a feasible strategy to improve the photoactivity of photocatalysts for the degradation of pollutants by effective mass transfer. Graphical abstract

Enhanced oxygen evolution reaction performance of Cr-CoFe-layered double hydroxide via the synergistic roles of Fe etching, Cr doping, and anion intercalation

Shuo Liu,Yufan Zhang,Lin Hao,Wei Shen,Anaclet Nsabimana,Shigang Shen

The development of cost-effective and efficient electrocatalysts for water electrolysis is crucial for sustainable hydrogen production. In this study, we designed a hierarchical Cr-CoFe-LDH composite using a tailored etching and doping strategy to enhance catalytic performance. By integrating mesoporous CoFe-LDH layers with C 2 O 4 2− anions and Cr dopants, we engineered a structure that optimizes mass transport, strengthens electronic interactions at active sites, and stabilizes key catalytic species. In situ spectroscopic analysis provided direct evidence of active species evolution, offering insights into the underlying reaction mechanisms. As a result, the Cr-CoFe-LDH catalyst exhibited excellent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity, demonstrating enhanced intrinsic performance and long-term stability. This work presents a novel approach to designing high-performance LDH-based catalysts and advances the understanding of active site modulation for efficient water electrolysis.

Regulating the non-effective carriers transport for high-performance lithium metal batteries

Simeng Wang,Youchun Yu,Shaotong Fu,Hongtao Li,Jiajia Huang

The absence of control over carriers transport during electrochemical cycling, accompanied by the deterioration of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) and the growth of lithium dendrites, has hindered the development of lithium metal batteries. Herein, a separator complexion consisting of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofiber and MIL-101(Cr) particles prepared by electrospinning is proposed to bind the anions from the electrolyte utilizing abundant effective open metal sites in the MIL-101(Cr) particles to modulate the transport of non-effective carriers. The binding effect of the PANM separator promotes uniform lithium metal deposition and enhances the stability of the SEI layer and long cycling stability of ultra-high nickel layered oxide cathodes. Taking PANM as the Li || NCM96 separator enables high-voltage cycling stability, maintaining 72% capacity retention after 800 cycles at a charging and discharging rate of 0.2 C at a cut-off voltage of 4.5 V and 0 °C. Meanwhile, the excellent high-rate performance delivers a specific capacity of 156.3 mA h g −1 at 10 C. In addition, outstanding cycling performance is realized from −20 to 60 °C. The separator engineering facilitates the electrochemical performance of lithium metal batteries and enlightens a facile and promising strategy to develop fast charge/discharge over a wide range of temperatures.

A Novel Near-Infrared Emitting Sr2LuSbO6:Fe3+ Phosphor with Persistent Luminescence Performance

Jiangyue Su,Ran Pang,Tao Tan,Shangwei Wang,Xuexia Chen,Su Zhang,Hongjie Zhang

The near-infrared (NIR) persistent luminescence (PersL) materials have attracted widespread attention owing to the unique self-sustained light with good penetrability. Currently, most of the reported NIR PersL materials are activated by Cr 3+ . Considering the potential toxicity of chromium ions, there is an urgent requirement to explore the Cr 3+ -free NIR phosphors. Herein, a novel NIR phosphor Sr 2 LuSbO 6 :Fe 3+ (SLSO:Fe 3+ ) is prepared and its luminescence properties are systematically studied. The Fe 3+ -activated Sr 2 LuSbO 6 exhibits a long-wavelength NIR emission band centered at 890 nm with a 110 nm full-width at half maximum (FWHM), and its PersL can last over 18 h. The phosphor shows excellent PersL stability even after being dispersed in solutions of different environments for 7 days. Furthermore, the PersL emitted by the phosphor can penetrate the 2 cm thickness beef, evidencing its good NIR PersL penetration property. This work provides a novel NIR PersL materials based on Fe 3+ luminescence for technological applications and also contributes to accelerate the development of new-generation Fe 3+ -doped NIR PersL phosphor toward versatile applications.

Microwave-enhanced reductive immobilization of high concentrations of chromium in a field soil using iron polysulfide

Jianle Wang,Xueming Liu,Zhihua Zhu,Le Yuan,Dongye Zhao,Hong Deng,Zhang Lin

High concentrations of Cr(VI) are often detected in contaminated soil. Yet, cost-effective remediation technologies have been lacking. In this study, we prepared a type of FeS x based on commercial FeSO 4 .7H 2 O and CaS x and tested a microwave-assisted technology based on FeS x for reductive immobilization of high concentrations of Cr(VI) in a field contaminated soil. The as-prepared FeS x particles appeared as a honeycomb-like and highly porous structure. The microwave-assisted FeS x reduction process was able to rapidly reduce the TCLP-based reachability of Cr(VI) from 391.8 to 2.6 mg·L -1 . The dosage of FeS x , S/Fe molar ratio, initial moisture content, microwave power, and irradiation time can all affect the treatment effectiveness. After 500 days curing under atmospheric conditions, the TCLP-leached concentration of Cr remained below the regulatory limit of 5 mg·L -1 , while other treatments failed to meet the goal. S x 2- or S 2- served as the primary electron donors, whereas Fe facilitated the microwave absorption and the formation of the stable final product of FeCr 2 O 4 . S and Fe are mostly precipitated in soil. The microwave-assisted FeS x reduction was shown to be an effective approach to rapidly reduce the leachability of Cr(VI) in contaminated soil, especially in heavily contaminated soil.
