The thermal insulation performance of cubic ZrO2–CaO solid solution (CSZ) (16 mol % CaO) and monoclinic ZrO2 (MZ) was investigated in a two-stage multi-anvil press under a pressure of 10 GPa and temperatures up to 1800°C through in situ temperature measurements with the same cell assembly. The results show that the cell temperatures with CSZ as the thermal insulator were always higher than that when thermal insulator was MZ at the same heating power, and the maximum deviation value was 600°C (50% higher) within the measurable range. These two materials were analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermal conductivity measurement and scanning electron microscopy. It revealed that the point defects existed in CSZ dominated the thermal insulation performance at high pressure, the same as what at normal pressure. It was also found that the heating process was more controllable when using CSZ as thermal insulator under high pressure.

Hexachlorobenzene (HCB) contamination of soils remains a significant environmental challenge all over the world. Reductive stabilization is a developing technology that can decompose the HCB with a dechlorination process. A nanometallic Al/CaO (n-Al/CaO) dispersion mixture was developed utilizing ball-milling technology in this study. The dechlorination efficiency of HCB in contaminated soils by the n-Al/CaO grinding treatment was evaluated. Response surface methodology (RSM) was employed to investigate the effects of three variables (soil moisture content, n-Al/CaO dosage and grinding time) and the interactions between these variables under the Box-Behnken Design (BBD). A high regression coefficient value (R2= 0.9807) and lowpvalue (<0.0001) of the quadratic model indicated that the model was accurate in predicting the experimental results. The optimal soil moisture content, n-Al/CaO dosage, and grinding time were found to be 7% (m/m), 17.7% (m/m), and 24 h, respectively, in the experimental ranges and levels. Under optimal conditions, the dechlorination efficiency was 80%. The intermediate product analysis indicated that dechlorination was the process by stepwise loss of chloride atoms. The main pathway observed within 24 h was HCB → pentachlorobenzene (PeCB) → 1,2,3,4-tetrachlorobenzene (TeCB) and 1,2,4,5-TeCB. The results indicated that the moderate soil moisture content was crucial for the hydrodechlorination of HCB. A probable mechanism was proposed wherein water acted like a hydrogen donor and promoted the hydrodechlorination process. The potential application of n-Al/CaO is an environmentally-friendly and cost-effective option for decontamination of HCB-contaminated soils. Keywords:nanometallic Al/CaO;ball milling;dechlorination;response surface methodology

This present work aimed to attain a high-performance tape for LTCC application by using butyl benzyl phthalate as plasticizer in tape casting slurry of CaO–SiO 2 –B 2 O 3 glass–ceramics. The plasticizing mechanism of butyl benzyl phthalate in suspensions was demonstrated in depth. Dried droplets of binder were prepared to preliminarily judge the compatibility of binder and plasticizer, and the optimal additive amount was determined by rheological characteristic. In addition, a series of qualitative and quantitative methods were carried out to assess the tensile strength and elongation of green tapes, microwave properties and densification of sintered bodies. The experimental results revealed that when the addition of BBP was up to 45 wt%, tape casting slurries had the optimal fluidity and green tapes obtained the excellent performance with density at 1.65 g/cm 3 , tensile strength at 1.43 MPa and elongation at 13.4%. Meanwhile, sintered bodies fired at 850 °C achieved the highest density at 2.42 g/cm 3 with ε r = 5.94 and tanδ = 10 × 10 −4 at 10 GHz.

Capturing CO 2 using clamshell/eggshell-derived CaO adsorbent can not only reduce carbon emissions but also alleviate the impact of trash on the environment. However, organic acid was usually used, high-temperature calcination was often performed, and CO 2 was inevitably released during preparing CaO adsorbents from shell wastes. In this work, CaO-based CO 2 adsorbent was greenly prepared by calcium-induced hydrogenation of clamshell and eggshell wastes in one pot at room/moderate temperature. CO 2 adsorption experiments were performed in a thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA). The adsorption performance of the adsorbents obtained from the mechanochemical reaction (BM-C/E-CaO) was superior to that of the adsorbents obtained from the thermochemical reaction (Cal-C/E-CaO). The CO 2 adsorption capacity of BM-C-CaO at 650 °C is up to 36.82 wt%, but the adsorption decay rate of the sample after 20 carbonation/calcination cycles is only 30.17%. This study offers an alternative energy-saving method for greenly preparing CaO-based adsorbent from shell wastes.

In this study, CaO–Al 2 O 3 –MgO–SiO 2 glass was utilized to join SiC after surface polishing and etching, without the application of pressure. To join polished SiC at 1250 °C using CaO–Al 2 O 3 –MgO–SiO 2 glass proved unsuccessful. However, when polished SiC was joined at 1350 °C, the joint shear strength was 108.0 ± 15.5 MPa. Etching polished SiC with a NaOH–K 3 [Fe(CN) 6 ] solution effectively removed surface carbon, resulting in numerous micro-pits, that increased the joining area and improved the wettability of CaO–Al 2 O 3 –MgO–SiO 2 glass. The joint strengths of etched SiC joined at 1250 °C and 1350 °C were 29.0 ± 11.6 MPa and 125.1 ± 19.6 MPa, respectively. After ablation at 1200 °C for 10 min, the retained strength of the etched joints (joined at 1350 °C) was 61.9 ± 4.0 MPa, whereas the strength of the polished joints decreased to only 36.6 ± 10.7 MPa. Surface etching demonstrates the potential to significantly enhance the strength and high-temperature resistance of SiC joints.

In this paper, alkali-free boroaluminosilicate glasses with low thermal expansion coefficient and low dielectric loss were prepared. The effect of Bi 2 O 3 substitution for CaO on structure, thermal expansion, elastic modulus, and dielectric properties of the samples was investigated by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermal dilatometer, ultrasonic thickness gauge, and impedance analyzer. The results show that the polymerization degree of the glass network structure increases first and then decreases, which reaches the highest with the substitution of 0.5 mol% Bi 2 O 3 for CaO. The thermal expansion coefficient and dielectric constant decrease and then increase, while elastic modulus shows the opposite trend, which is attributed to the change in the glass network structure. The atomic mass of Bi much greater than that of Ca causes the obvious increase of glass density. The ionic radius of Bi 3+ ions is larger than that of Ca 2+ ions, making it more difficult to migrate through the glass network, reducing dielectric loss. In particular, the sample with 0.5 mol% Bi 2 O 3 substitution shows excellent properties, such as low thermal expansion coefficient (3.07 × 10 –6 /K), high elastic modulus (80.58 GPa), low dielectric constant (5.52), and dielectric loss (3.15 × 10 –3 ), which is very suitable for use as chip packaging material.

Ca-based materials are considered to be promising energy storage materials for the 3rd generation concentrated solar power (CSP) plants due to their high energy storage density , high operating temperature , and low energy loss . However, the poor cyclic stability, low solar absorption capability, and slow reaction kinetics of conventional Ca-based materials seriously limit large-scale applications. Here, we successfully synthesized a Zr-Mn co-doped CaO-based composite, achieving good cyclic stability, enhanced solar absorption capability, and fast carbonation reaction kinetics simultaneously. The energy storage performance of 20Ca-0.5Zr-0.5Mn was evaluated at a high carbonation reaction temperature of 850 °C. Results showed that the performance decay of 20Ca-0.5Zr-0.5Mn was only 10.11 % over 30 cycles. By co-doping Zr and Mn elements, the carbonation reaction kinetics of CaO-based composites were promoted because of increased basicity and oxygen vacancies . Compared with pure CaO, the average solar absorptance of 20Ca-0.5Zr-0.5Mn was enhanced by about 376 %. Therefore, the proposed Zr-Mn co-doped CaO-based composite indicates the bright applied prospect in CSP plants for solar energy storage .

Nanotechnology has been widely used in agriculture to improve plant growth and stress tolerance. The exogenous application of calcium nanoparticles (CaO NPs) can improve plant tolerance to drought stress. However, the underlying physiological molecular mechanisms are still unclear. Herein, 100 mg L−1 of CaO NPs were applied to rapeseed plants when grown under the conditions of 0–15% w/v PEG-6000 solution. Drought stress reduced the rapeseed growth, CO2 assimilation rate, stomatal conductance, and photosynthetic pigments. The application of 100 mg L−1 CaO NPs improved the growth of rapeseed plants under drought conditions (shoot dry weight, 77%; root dry weight, 69%). Growth improvement due to CaO NPs was positively associated with the photosynthetic rate, quantum yield of photosystem II and quantity of photosynthetic pigments. The net photosynthetic rate (Pn), stomatal conductance (Gs), internal CO2 (Ci), and transpiration rate (Tr) increased by 65%, 85%, 69%, and 67%, respectively. The increases in quantum yield of photosystem II and photosynthetic pigments due to CaO NPs were 85% and 53%, respectively. A positive association between the growth and each of the gas exchange attributes, PSII activity and photosynthetic pigments indicated that CaO NPs improved the photosynthetic rate by reducing stomatal, as well as non-stomatal, limiting factors. The CaO NP treatment also improved the uptake of mineral nutrients under drought stress, including calcium by 82%, and potassium, phosphorous, magnesium, manganese, and boron by 78%, 89%, 72%, 80% and 73%, respectively. Furthermore, the application of CaO NPs caused a greater accumulation of 28 metabolites and reduced the accumulation of 18 metabolites that are mainly related to N-metabolism and amino acid biosynthesis, such as cysteine/homocysteine, lysine, tryptophan, alanine, glutamate, and proline, compared to droughted plants. The application of CaO NPs under drought conditions induced the up-regulation of upstream genes such as CHS, CHI, F3′H, and F3H, early development genes such as PAL, C4H, 4CL1, 4CL5, DFR, and ANS, and late development genes such as UGT78D2, UGT79B1, MT, PAP1, and PAP2 in plants involved in flavonoid biosynthesis expression. The findings of this study suggest that CaO NPs improved the photosynthetic capacity through modulating the stomatal conductance, photosystem II activity, accumulation of nutrients, and reprogramming of both primary and secondary metabolic pathways such as N-metabolism, hormonal and flavonoid biosynthesis for regulating rapeseed growth under drought stress.

The sorption-enhanced steam gasification of biomass using CaO-based materials is considered a promising method for H 2 production, while the presence of H 2 S in the syngas results sulfur poisoning of the materials. In this work, DFT calculations were combined with experimental verification to elucidate the mechanism of H 2 S resistance and structural stability of Ce-doped CaO material. The theoretical results reveal that Ce-doping significantly modulates the surface electronic structure, and Ce-doped CaO surface exhibits less negative H 2 S adsorption energies and higher activation barriers for the initial dissociation steps compared with pristine CaO, thus the onset of the sulfidation reaction is inhibited. Furthermore, the formation of oxygen vacancies is energetically less favorable on Ce-doped CaO surfaces, which is a prerequisite for sulfidation reaction. Even under sulfur-poisoning conditions, the Ce-doped CaO retains superior CO 2 adsorption, and the adsorption of Ca 4 O 4 clusters demonstrates that a robust chemical anchoring effect was introduced by Ce-doping. Experimental results from 20 cycles of steam gasification of high‑sulfur Enteromorpha prolifera validate these theoretical findings, and Ce-doped CaO maintains high H 2 production and CO 2 capture performances with minimal sulfur-poisoning deactivation.

Integrated CO 2 capture and dry reforming of CH 4 (ICC-DRM) is an effective approach to mitigate CO 2 emissions while producing syngas, with dual-functional material (DFM) as the core. CaO-Ni/CeO 2 DFM shows great potential for ICC-DRM application, but the impact of synthesis methods on its' structure and performance remains unclear. In this study, CaO-Ni/CeO 2 was prepared via solution combustion (SC), wet ball-milling (WM), and co-precipitation (CP), characterized by XRD, BET, SEM-EDS TEM, TGA and H 2 -TPR. The ICC-DRM performance was evaluated in a fixed-bed reactor. The SC sample exhibited the most favorable surface structure, with well-developed porosity and uniform elemental distribution, achieving the highest CO 2 capture capacity (152 wt% at 650 °C), achieving the highest CO 2 capture capacity (152 wt% at 650 °C) The WM sample showed intermediate properties, while the CP sample had a dense morphology and elemental aggregation leading to poor performance. Elevated temperature (675–700 °C) promoted WM/CP reactivity (still lower than SC at 650 °C), but caused severe performance degradation and increasing carbon deposition (21% for WM and 37% for CP after 10 cycles), while the SC sample maintained stability. Further optimization confirmed 5% Ni as the optimal loading for SC-DFM, achieving 95%–97% CH 4 conversion and a stable H 2 /CO ratio (∼1) at 650 °C. This study clarifies the regulatory effect of synthesis methods on DFM structure-reactivity relationship, identifying SC as the optimal strategy for high-performance ICC-DRM materials.

Abstract Calcium looping is a promising CO2 capture technology, and the mechanical stability of calcium-based adsorbent pellets is critical for their industrial application. Although pelletization processes and formulation optimization can improve the initial strength, the strength evolution of pellets during carbonation/calcination cycles and the underlying dominant mechanism remains little understood. This study identified two major effects governing pellet strength evolution during cyclic reactions: the thermal-driven effect (thermal shock damage and high-temperature sintering) and the reaction-induced effect (volume change damage and reactive sintering). Their respective roles and relative contributions at different cycling stages were systematically investigated by combining carbonation/calcination cycling tests, short-term thermal shock tests, and nonreactive long-term thermal cycling control experiments. The results indicate that the CaO pellets show an early decline in strength, followed by a partial recovery in later cycles. Mechanistic analysis indicates that thermal shock promotes pellet cracking, while cyclic volume expansion/contraction caused by the CaO/CaCO3 phase transformation can induce local stress concentration, both of which cause strength degradation. In contrast, sintering-induced densification enhances structural strength, thereby contributing to late-stage strength recovery. Relative contribution analysis reveals a clear stage-dependent transition in the factors governing strength evolution. The thermal-driven effect dominates the early stage, contributing over 70% in the 0–5 cycle, whereas the reaction-induced effect gradually increased to over 60% in the 20–25 cycle and became dominant later. This study provides mechanistic insights into the strength evolution of calcium-based pellets during calcium looping and offers guidance for improving the mechanical stability of calcium-based pellets.

Among high-temperature adsorbents, CaO is considered a promising material due to its high CO 2 absorption capacity and cost efficiency. This work reports the synthesis of CaO composite adsorbent using coal-fired slag (CFS) as an anti-sintering agent to enhance the cyclic stability of CO 2 capture. The precursor was prepared by a simple stirring protocol that incorporated a CO 2 -storage material (CO 2 SM) previously obtained by reacting CO 2 with a tetraethylene glycol (T4EG) and 1,2-propanediamine (PDA) mixture. Systematic optimization identified the optimal synthesis conditions as 10 wt% CFS, particle sizes of 500–800 mesh, synthesis temperature of 30°C, and reaction time of 2 h. The CaO/CFS precursor was obtained through stirring-induced precipitation and subsequently calcined at 900°C. The presence of CFS effectively inhibited CaO particle sintering and significantly improved cyclic stability. The optimized CaO/CFS composite absorbent exhibited an initial CO 2 adsorption capacity of 485.91 mg/g, maintaining 68.36% of the initial capacity after 20 cycles. In contrast, pure CaO typically maintains only 42.48% under identical conditions (99.99 vol% CO 2 , 650°C adsorption, 900°C regeneration). This work presents a viable and sustainable method for CO 2 capture utilizing low-cost waste materials, offering practical insights for the development of advanced CO 2 capture technologies. Graphical A CaO/CFS composite adsorbent was synthesized using coal-fired slag as an anti-sintering scaffold to enhance high-temperature CO 2 capture. The optimized material achieved a CO 2 uptake of 485.91 mg/g and maintained 68.36% capacity after 20 cycles, higher than pure CaO owing to suppressed sintering and preserved pore structure accessibility.
