A high removal rate (>99.7%) of combined arsenite (As(III)) and Cd (Cd(II)) in low concentration (1000 μg/L) from contaminated water was achieved by a calcined MgZnFe-CO 3 layered double hydroxide (CMZF) adsorbent. Batch control studies and a series of spectroscopy detection technologies were employed to investigate the removal mechanism and interactions between As(III) and Cd(II) on the interface of water/CMZF. Synergistic adsorption and photooxidation occurred based on the systematical kinetic and isotherm studies. The enhanced removal of As(III) was achieved by the photooxidation, formation of ternary As(III) Cd(II) surface complexes and enhanced hydrogen bond . Meanwhile, oxidative formed negative charged As(V) could reduce the electrostatic repulsion force between Cd(II) cations and play a role as anion bridging, consequently resulted in a stronger attraction between CMZF and Cd(II). Combined with the verdicts of relevant characterizations such as XRD, XPS and EPR, it was assumed that the deep co-removal mechanism could be attributed to the coupling of various processes including intercalation, complexation, photooxidation of As(III) and precipitation of CdCO 3 . Moreover, the successful removal of As(III) and Cd(II) from real water matrix qualified the CMZF a potentially attractive adsorbent for both As(III) and Cd(II) deep treatment in practical engineering.

Soils contain abundant organic matter (OM) and Mn(oxyhydr)oxides (MnOs) composites, which primarily control the geochemical behavior of Cd. However, the impact of manganese phase transformation on the retention and availability of Cd remains unclear. Here, four organo-mineral composites were synthesized using birnessite (δ-Mn Ⅳ O 2 ), β-Mn Ⅲ,Ⅳ O 2 , γ-Mn Ⅲ OOH, and Mn Ⅱ,Ⅲ 3 O 4 with fulvic acid (FA), during adsorption to preformed MnOs with 5 wt% organic carbon loadings. The performance and underlying Cd(II) adsorption mechanism by resulting FA-MnO composites were explored. Results showed that δ-MnO 2 transformation decreases Cd(II) adsorption capacity by 23.02–45.44 % on the resulting FA-MnOs. This reduction was attributed to increased aggregation of MnO particles and competition from generated Mn(II/III) for available vacancy sites. Cd undergoes redistribution within the FA-MnOs during the transformation of δ-MnO 2 . The amount of Cd associated with MnOs decreases by 9.46–37.08 %, while OM bound-Cd increases by 2.82–10.49 %. FAδ-MnO 2 predominantly interacted with Cd(II) through tetravalent manganese, forming stable coordination or chemical bonds. In contrast, FAγ-MnOOH and FA-Mn 3 O 4 primarily interacted with Cd(II) through divalent manganese via electrostatic attraction and ion exchange, resulting in weaker binding stability. These findings provide new insights into the roles of manganese transformation in the geochemical cycling of Cd in soils.

The creation of dependable analytical platforms capable of detecting multiple heavy metal ions (HMIs) concurrently continues to be a significant challenge in environmental monitoring. This study introduces an innovative composite sensing material composed of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) modified UiO-66-NH 2 metal organic frameworks (MOFs) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) for simultaneous detection of multiple HMIs. UiO-66-NH 2 , with its extensive specific surface area and three-dimensional porous framework, facilitates effective ion diffusion and target preconcentration. The interconnected CNTs network significantly enhances electron transfer kinetics and expands the electroactive surface area, as confirmed by cyclic voltammetry (CV) analyses. AuNPs can effectively amplify electrochemical reactions and enhance the sensitivity of electrochemical detection. The thoughtful design of this sensing material amalgamates the unique benefits of its constituents. This sensing material attains remarkably low limits of detection (LOD), which is 0.021 μg·L −1 for Cd 2+ and 0.008 μg·L −1 for Pb 2+ , showcasing outstanding resistance to interference in complex environments. The potential applicationsapplications of MOF-based composites in the electrochemical sensors of HMIs are expanded by this methodology.

A set of Cd(II)-based metal coordination complexes with indazole and benzimidazole scaffolds, namely, [Cd( IZBI) Cl 2 ] n ·H 2 O ( 1 ) [Cd( IZBI) Br 2 ] n ·H 2 O ( 2 ) [Cd( IZBI) I 2 ]·H 2 O ( 3 ) ( IZBI stands for 3-(1 H -benzimidazol-2-yl)-1 H -indazole), were obtained through solvothermal reaction conditions. They have been structurally characterized by elemental analysis, single-crystal X-ray diffraction and IR spectra. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that complexes 1 – 3 show one-dimensional polymeric, dimeric and mono-nucleic features, respectively, which indicates that the halide anions affect the final structure of metal coordination complexes. The luminescent maximal peaks can be observed 448, 456 and 462 nm for complexes 1 – 3 , respectively. Compared with the emission peak of IZBI , there exist bathochromic phenomena for metal coordination complexes 1 – 3 , where the red-shifted values can be observed to be 46, 54 and 60 nm, respectively. The order of the photoluminescent emission peaks is summarized as the following: 3 > 2 > 1 . The single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis shows that it occurs the order of the dihedral angles between the pyrazole and imidazole rings ( 3 < 2 < 1 ). The Hirshfeld analysis demonstrates that there is a positive correlation between the sequence of H∙∙∙C/C∙∙∙H intermolecular contacts and the dihedral angles formed between the pyrazole and imidazole rings, which is negative correlation with the positions of the luminescent maxima. Additionally, the thermostable behaviors of these complexes were inspected in detail.

Here, inspired by the poisoning process of heavy metal in human body that the accidental ingested heavy metal can anchor to the functional groups of DNA/protein/enzyme to exert their toxicities during the rapid blood circulation, we developed the adsorbent that enveloped Etched UiO-66 with abundant functional groups into chitosan (CTS) aerogel to capture Pb(II) and Cd(II) in aqueous and apple juice. SEM, XRD and FTIR spectra were used to characterize the Etched UiO-66/CTS aerogel. The results showed that Etched UiO-66/CTS aerogel has a three-dimensional porous structure, and –OH groups of CTS interact with Zr(IV) of Etched UiO-66 to form the stable UiO-66/CTS aerogel. Benefiting from the intrinsic properties of porous and abundant functional groups, Etched UiO-66/CTS aerogel exhibits satisfactory adsorption capacities of 654.9 mg g −1 for Pb(II) and 343.9 mg g −1 for Cd(II) at 45 °C. Moreover, the aerogel shows excellent removal efficiencies of 98.21% for Pb(II) and 98.70% for Cd(II) with initial concentration of 1.0 mg L −1 in apple juice with little effect on the quality of apple juice. This strategy of mimetic heavy metal ions’ poisoning behavior opens up a new avenue for the removal of heavy metal ions in complex matrices.

When used individually, ZIF-8 suffers from hydrolysis in aqueous media, while CAU-17 is limited by its low specific surface area (64.71 m²/g). Therefore, we employed an in situ self-assembly strategy to construct a MOF-on-MOF heterostructure (CAU-17@ZIF-8) for the synergistic removal of Cd(II) and methylene blue (MB). The composite achieved maximum adsorption capacities of 607.65 mg/g for Cd(II) and 1025.38 mg/g for MB, with a 99% removal efficiency for low-concentration pollutants in real wastewater. Even after five cycles, 75% efficiency was maintained. Mechanistic studies combining batch experiments, characterization, and DFT calculations revealed that the heterojunction interface promotes substantial charge transfer from CAU-17 to ZIF-8, significantly enhancing electrostatic attraction toward cations. Simultaneously, new mesopores formed at the interface increase the specific surface area (239.62 m 2 /g) and provide rapid mass-transfer channels. MB adsorption is governed by electrostatic attraction, hydrogen bonding, and π-π interactions, while Cd(II) adsorption relies on ion exchange, coordination, and electrostatic attraction. This work demonstrates that constructing MOF-on-MOF heterojunctions is a promising strategy to overcome the intrinsic limitations of single MOFs in water remediation, thereby greatly enhancing the adsorption capacity toward methylene blue (MB) and Cd(II).

Heavy metal pollution, especially from Pb(II) and Cd(II), poses significant risks due to its persistence and bioaccumulation potential. Traditional removal methods face challenges like high costs and secondary pollution. This study developed a novel three-dimensional porous adsorbent XBS, derived from xanthate-modifiedPhanerochaete sordidaYK-624 (a white-rot fungus), for the rapid and efficient removal of Pb(II) and Cd(II) from wastewater. Characterization showed that XBS has a sponge-like structure with abundant functional groups, significantly enhancing its adsorption capacity and kinetics. XBS achieved 96% Pb(II) and 32% Cd(II) removal within 1 min at a 0.25 g/L dose, reaching over 95% of the maximum adsorption capacity within 30 min for Pb(II) and 240 min for Cd(II). The maximum capacities were 224.72 mg/g for Pb(II) and 82.99 mg/g for Cd(II). Kinetic and thermodynamic analyses indicated a chemisorption-driven process, which was both endothermic and spontaneous. XBS exhibited high selectivity for Pb(II) over Cd(II) and other metals (Tl(I), Cu(II)), attributed to stronger covalent interactions with sulfur- and nitrogen-containing groups. Mechanistic analyses (XRD, FTIR, and XPS) revealed that removal occurs via ion exchange, complexation, and precipitation, forming stable compounds like PbS/CdS and PbCO3/CdCO3. Given its cost-effectiveness, scalability, and high efficiency, XBS represents a promising adsorbent for heavy metal remediation, particularly in Pb(II)-contaminated wastewater treatment applications.

Owing to the limited pore structure and surface charged groups, it is still challenging for biochar (BC) as the host of metallic oxide nanoparticles to achieve the highly efficient treatment of heavy metals in water. To overcome this barrier, a highly porous and charged biochar (LABC) was developed as supporter to load hydrated ferric oxide (HFO), and a new nanocomposite HFO-LABC was acquired for heavy metal decontamination. The increased and enlarged pores from KHCO 3 for LABC activation apparently cut down adsorption equilibrium time of HFO-LABC to Cd(II) and Cu(II) (within 10 min) by reducing pore diffusion resistance of targeted metals. The predicted pore diffusion coefficient D is 2.3 ☓10 –8 and 3.6 ☓10 –8 cm 2 /s for Cd(II) and Cu(II) in HFO-LABC, respectively, about 10 times higher than that in HFO-BC (2.1 ☓10 –9 and 3.7 ☓10 –9 cm 2 /s). The introduced charged groups onto LABC notably enhanced Cd(II) and Cu(II) adsorption on HFO-LABC through promoting the dispersion of the loaded nanoparticles (size < 10 nm) and the potential Donnan membrane effect. Consequently, Fe-normalized adsorption capacities of Cd(II) and Cu(II) on HFO-LABC of 976.23 and 1170.77 mg/g-Fe are much greater than those on HFO-BC (299.50 and 510.92 mg/g-Fe). Moreover, HFO-LABC can achieve advanced treatment for synthetic and real Cd(II) and Cu(II)-polluted wastewater in cyclic batch system, with treatment capacities of 1500, 3500 and 8000, 4500 mL/g-HFO-LABC. In addition, the spent HFO-LABC can achieve complete regeneration using HCl-CaCl 2 binary solution with desorption rate >95 %.

Hydroxyapatite (HAP) has been widely used for the preconcentration and stabilization of various heavy metal pollutants in both the water and soil environment. Nonetheless, there still exists a gap between its synthesis conditions, physicochemical properties and removal performances. Under such a research background, three HAP materials were synthesized via a modified co-precipitation approach by varying initial Ca/P molar ratios (i.e., 4/3, 5/3 and 6/3) and used for capturing toxic cadmium (Cd(II)) from an aqueous solution. According to the experimental results, the three synthesized HAP samples were all the Ca-deficient type and the actual Ca/P molar ratio was in the increasing order of HAP4/3 < HAP5/3 < HAP6/3. In particular, the HAP4/3 sample exhibited higher Cd(II) removal performance due to its higher specific surface area (SSA) value and abundant Ca-deficient sites. More than 93% of Cd(II) was removed within an extremely short period of 5 min and a complete removal was achieved at a prolonged contact time of 24 h. The sorption behavior of Cd(II) was independent of ionic strength variation and scarcely influenced by various inorganic electrolyte ions, low molecular weight organic acids (LMWOAs) and competing heavy metal ions . The desorption data of Cd(II)-containing HAP phases, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses pointed to a predominant removal mechanism of lattice incorporation with a minor contribution of inner-sphere surface complexation. The experimental findings demonstrated the significant application potential of Ca-deficient HAP material for the cost-effective treatment of Cd(II)-polluted water systems.

The heavy metals and organic substances has deterioration of the ecosystem, resulting in serious environmental pollutions, thus urgent solutions need to be developed in treating these waste water problems. Functional compounds modified 3D polyurethane foams, with high surface to volume ratio has paid much attentions due to their high efficiency of absorption capability. In this study, polyethyleneimine (PEI) was used to incorporated into polyurethane foam (PUF) loaded with sodium carboxymethylcellulose (SCMC), resulting in a cross-linked, 3D interconnective porous polyurethane foam (PCPUF). The results of adsorption experiments demonstrated that PCPUF exhibited a strong adsorption capacity for both MO and Cd 2+ , with corresponding maximum adsorption capacity of 415.198 mg/g (at 328 K, pH 7) and 166.48 mg/g (at 343 K, pH 7), respectively. Furthermore, the results of cyclic adsorption experiments showed that the removal rates of MO and Cd 2+ after five cycles are 90 % and 85 %, respectively, indicating that PCPUF has a good recyclability. Therefore, 3D porous polyurethane foams show promise as an effective adsorbent for removing metal ions and organic substances.

The continuous expansion of the market demand and scale of commercial amidoxime chelating resins has caused large amounts of resin to be discarded around the world. In this study, the waste amidoxime chelating resin was reutilized as an adsorbent for the removal and recovery of Pb(II), Cu(II), Cd(II) and Zn(II) ions from aqueous solutions. The physical morphology and chemical composition of the waste amidoxime chelating resin (WAC-resin) from the factory was characterized by the elemental analyzer, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The influence of the initial metal ions concentration, contact time, temperature and the solution pH on the adsorption performance of the metal ions was explored by batch experiments. It was shown that the optimal pH was 4. Kinetic studies revealed that adsorption process corresponded with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the adsorption isotherm was consistent with the Langmuir model. At room temperature, the adsorption capacities of WAC-resin for Pb2+, Cu2+, Zn2+and Cd2+reached 114.6, 93.4, 24.4 and 20.7 mg/g, respectively. Keywords:waste amidoxime chelating resin;characterization;reutilization;heavy metals

Novel porous cellulose/chitosan composite spheres loaded with nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI/PCSs) were fabricated for the removal of Cd (II) from aqueous solution and the remediation of Cd species in contaminated soil. The green-based nZVI/PCSs exhibited the improved dispersion and antioxidability of nZVI compared to the pristine one. The results from SEM/EDS suggested that the Fe (0) took part in the adsorption of the Cd (II) ions; whereas XPS analysis revealed that Fe (0) and amino groups in nZVI/PCSs played crucial roles in Cd (II) removal via the effects of precipitation or chelation. The results of the experiments in aqueous solution and model fitting showed that the adsorption of Cd (II) induced by nZVI/PCSs was better described by Langmuir isotherm and the maximum adsorption capacity reached up to 110.3 mg/g. The soil remediation tests demonstrated that nZVI/PCSs could significantly enhance cadmium immobilization, enabling the conversion of most exchangeable Cd species to Fe Mn oxides and organic matters in contaminated soil after the remediation. Overall, nZVI/PCSs have great potential as an excellent adsorbent with cost-effectiveness in Cd (II) removal from the aqueous solution and the remediation of Cd species in contaminated soil phases.
