Organic–inorganic hybrid metal halides have been extensively studied because of their great potential in optoelectronics. Herein, we report three hybrid metal halides (Bmpip)2ZnBr4, (Bmpip)2CdBr4, and (Bmpip)8Pb11Br30 (where Bmpip+ is 1-butyl-1-methyl-piperidinium, C10H22N+). (Bmpip)2ZnBr4 and (Bmpip)2CdBr4 crystallize in the P21/c space group with zero-dimensional crystal structures with [MBr4]2− (M = Zn, Cd) tetrahedra isolated by Bmpip+. (Bmpip)8Pb11Br30 crystallizes in the triclinic space group P with one-dimensional corrugated chains constructed from face-sharing [PbBr6]4− octahedra. All of the compounds exhibit excellent ambient and thermal stability. Under UV excitation, all three compounds exhibit very broad emissions. Temperature-dependent photoluminescence measurements indicate that the broad emissions of (Bmpip)2ZnBr4 and (Bmpip)2CdBr4 can be attributed to both the organic cations and self-trapped excitons (STEs) and that the emission of (Bmpip)8Pb11Br30 is assigned to STEs. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the three compounds adopt a direct band gap. This work enriches our understanding of the structure types of hybrid metal halides while revealing their diverse emission mechanisms.

A triple-amplified and ratiometric electrochemical aptasensor for CA125 was designed based on hemin–graphene/SH-β-cyclodextrin@PdPt nanoflower (H-Gr/SH-β-CD@PdPtNF) composites and an exonuclease I (Exo I)-assisted strategy. In the nanocomposite, hemin acts as an internal reference signal owing to the reversible heminox/heminred pair. PdPtNFs can significantly improve the electron transfer rate. SH-β-CD can efficiently enrich quercetin probes through host–guest recognition and increase the second indicator signal. In the presence of CA125, due to the specific binding between the aptamer and CA125, the conformational change of dsDNA (designed by the CA125 aptamer and its complementary DNA) results in the release of quercetin embedded in dsDNA. Subsequently, the free quercetin and DNA fragments are enriched on the H-Gr/SH-β-CD@PdPtNF-modified electrode. Thus, an enhanced oxidation peak from quercetin (IQ) and a reduced peak from hemin (Ihemin) can indicate the same biological identification event. In addition, the recycling amplification of CA125 by Exo I can effectively assist the increase of the quercetin signal. The value of IQ/Ihemin is linear with the concentration of CA125 in the range from 6.0 × 10–4 to 1.0 × 103 ng/mL, and the limit of detection is 1.4 × 10–4 ng/mL. The recovery of CA125 in human blood serum samples was from 99.2 to 104.4%. The proposed sensor is sensitive and reliable, which provides an avenue for the development of triple amplification and ratiometric signal strategies for detecting tumor markers in clinical diagnostics.

The development of thin film composite (TFC) membrane with a high flux, a good fouling resistance and superior rejections remains a challenging task for membrane researchers, due to the inherent permeability-selectivity trade-off of the polymeric selective layer. In this work, highly permeable TFC membranes with excellent fouling resistance are developed by employing hydrophilic pore-containing monomers – ethylenediamine (EDA)-substituted cyclodextrins ( α , β , γ -CD-EDA) in interfacial polymerization. Effects of CD-EDA type on the surface properties, pore size, separation performance and antifouling properties of TFC_CD-EDA membranes are investigated by considering the differences in CD cavity size and EDA substitution degree. Superior FO flux up to 26–28 LMH (0.5 M Na 2 SO 4 draw solution) and exceptional antifouling properties with relatively low flux reduction (< 20%) and high flux recovery rate (> 91%) can be achieved by TFC_CD-EDA membranes, owing to the unique structure of CD-EDA with the intramolecular cavity and abundant hydrophilic hydroxyl groups. Furthermore, TFC_ β -CD-EDA membrane is applied for the enrichment of high-concentration BSA solution by taking advantage of its high flux, low reverse draw solute leakage and excellent fouling resistance. The obtained high BSA enrichment efficiency and high-quality BSA suggest a great potential of TFC_CD-EDA membrane in this aspect.

A novel cellulose/TiO2/β-CD hydrogel with high photocatalytic antibacterial activity and sustained release of drug was prepared. TiO2 sol with a diameter of about 9 nm in this hydrogel was the photoantibacterial agent. β-CD can significantly enhance photoantibacterial activity and the sustained-release effect of this hydrogel. The structure and property of this hydrogel composite were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus were selected as model bacteria to evaluate the antibacterial activity of the composite hydrogel under natural light irradiation and darkness, respectively. The in vitro release experiment used curcumin as a model drug in PBS buffer solution. The influence of β-CD on the antibacterial activity and sustained-release effect of the composite hydrogel was investigated. The results showed that the hydrogel composite presented a good photoantibacterial property, while the antibacterial activity can be neglected under the condition of no light. The complete release of curcumin from the composite was achieved after 120 h. Therefore, the hydrogel system has the characteristics of low cost and high effect, which could be used for an antibacterial sustained-release material.

Highly luminescent CdTe quantum dots (QDs) is a typical luminescent material with great application potential. The photoluminescence (PL) and stability of the QDs depended strongly on Cd precursors, ligand (e.g. thioglycolic acid TGA) and preparation conditions. In this paper, CdTe QDs were prepared using Cd precursors with various molar ratios of TGA/Cd at different conditions. The composition of Cd-precursors depend strongly on the molar ratios of TGA/Cd and storage time due to the formation of Cd-TGA clusters which affects strongly the surface states of the QDs. The effect of the preparation conditions of Cd-precursors (e.g. molar ratios of TGA/Cd) on the PL peak wavelength, the full width at half maximum of PL spectra, PL quantum yields (PLQYs), fluorescence lifetime , and stability were tested in detailed. Interestingly, the PLQYs of the QDs prepared using a large molar ratio of TGA/Cd remarkably increased after Cd precursor stored in dark conditions for long time. This confirms that Cd-TGA clusters in the precursors drastically affected the synthesis of the QDs. The mechanism was discussed in detailed. These aqueous CdTe QDs with high PLQYs were obtained using a molar ratio of TGA/Cd of 1.25. In addition, the PL peak position of the QDs was red-shifted with increasing temperature, but is back to the initial value after cooling down to room temperature . Cycle test indicates red-emitting QDs reveal high stability.

Predicting the sublethal effects of pollutants to aquatic organism is essential in realistic chemical risk assessment. However, only a few dynamics models for sublethal endpoints are available. Here, we investigated the toxic effects of the essential metal Cu and the nonessential metal Cd on Chlamydomonas reinhardtii under both single and combined exposure, compared the effectiveness of different effect endpoints as toxic effect factors, and developed a Dynamic Energy Budget toxicology (DEBtox) model to predict the sublethal effects of Cu and Cd on C. reinhardtii . The results showed that the chlorophyll fluorescence parameter is a better toxic effect indicator than others for short-term exposure (<24 h), while algal cell growth is preferred for long-term exposure (2–6 days). The developed DEBtox model could successfully predict single metal toxicity to C. reinhardtii, while the combined metal DEBtox model slightly overestimates the joint toxicity of Cu-Cd due to the antagonistic effect of Cu-Cd on C. reinhardtii. This study is helpful to understanding and better predictions of metal sublethal toxic effects on aquatic organisms.

Metal-hydroxyquinoline-halogen (MqX, M = Cd, Cu; q = 8-hydroxyquinoline; X = Cl, Br, I) nanowires are synthesized via a sonochemical-assisted method. The elemental analysis (EA), inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) support an M/q/X ratio of 1:1:1. The electron microscope images reveal a typical CdqX and CuqX nanowire diameter of 30–50 nm and a nanowire length of 400–600 nm. In addition, the synthesis of the MqX nanowires is only observed when there is an excess of halide ions (X/q molar ratio of 3 or greater). This halide deficiency results in the formation of micrometer-sized Mq 2 sheets. We demonstrated the conversion of the MqX nanowires to Mq 2 micro-sheets in an ultrasonic bath of 1 M 8-Hq ethanol solutions (50%, w / w ) at 50 °C for 2 h, but not vice versa. The MqX nanowires exhibited excellent properties for photoluminescence, electrochemiluminescence (ECL), and photoelectrochemistry (PEC). The CdqBr and CdqI nanowires were coated onto a glass carbon and a fluorine-doped tin oxide glass electrode to develop the above ECL and PEC methods for the detection of H 2 O 2 and Cu 2+ , respectively. In the range of 2 to 14 μM, the ECL intensity of the CdqBr nanowires was inversely proportional to the concentration of H 2 O 2 with a detection limit of 0.26 μM. For Cu 2+ sensing, the photocurrent of the CdqI nanowires exhibited a linear response to Cu 2+ over the range of 2 to 16 μM of which a detection limit of 0.2 μM was observed.

Nanofiltration (NF) is a promising technique to achieve sustainable and efficient separation of antibiotics with high industrial value. In this work, carboxymethyl- β -cyclodextrin (CM- β -CD) modified nanofiltration membrane was fabricated through interfacial polymerization (IP) for high concentration cephalexin solution separation, which is a classic antibiotic pharmaceutical wastewater. In principle, CM- β -CD can slow down the diffusion of amine monomers via electrostatic attraction, steric effect, hydrogen bonding and adsorption of the piperazine (PIP) monomer onto the hydrophilic surface, which renders amine monomer the high local concentration. The fabricated NF membranes possessed a larger proportion of dense primary layer on the surface. In addition, the accumulation of CM- β -CD between the substrate membrane and polyamide (PA) layer played the role as a barrier with specific cavity structure and bulk carboxylate to enhance the rejection of cephalexin. The cavity structure and stacking gap of CM-β-CD simultaneously rendered the membrane interlayer highly permeable. The optimal CM- β -CD modified membrane exhibited high rejection of cephalexin (94.7%) and water permeability of 122.4 L m −2 h −1 MPa −1 when the concentration of cephalexin was 3473.9 ppm (10 mmol/L). This work furnished an available way to prepare a novel nanofiltration membrane with efficient separation performance for relevant pharmaceutical production wastewater.

Clay adsorbents are considered an inexpensive and readily available solution for removing heavy metals, including cadmium, from the environment to reduce pollution. In this study, thiol-modified bentonite (SH-Bent) was prepared by grafting cysteamine hydrochloride onto natural bentonite (Bent). The effects of pH, equilibrium contact time, and temperature on the adsorption–desorption behavior of Cd 2+ were studied, and adsorption isotherm models were applied to examine the adsorption behavior of SH-bent. SH-Bent demonstrated better performance and stability for Cd 2+ adsorption than Bent. SH-Bent exhibited an enhanced adsorption capacity for Cd 2+ at equilibrium of 49.3 mg/g at pH 6, 120 min, and 303 K, which was 42-fold higher than that of Bent under the same conditions. An investigation of the desorption behavior of Cd 2+ adsorbed on Bent and SH-Bent in simulated acid rain revealed that SH-Bent has high stability, with a desorption rate of 5.73% at pH 4.5, 60 min, and 303 K, which was much lower than that demonstrated by Bent under the same conditions (45.68%). The Langmuir equation was the best-fitted adsorption isotherm model, closely followed by the Freundlich, Tempkin, and Dubinin–Radushkevich models. A significant difference in diffusion was observed between the two types of clay according to the intraparticle diffusion model. The adsorption–desorption processes of SH-Bent and Bent fit the pseudo-second-order model best among the five kinetic models examined. The information provided in this study can be used to apply thiol-modified clay for wastewater treatment or for the removal of cadmium from soil. Graphical abstract

Doping is an effective functional modification method for improving the optical, electrical, and magnetic properties of semiconductors. Here, Cd-doped wurtzite ZnO-quantum-dot (ZQ) zero-dimensional nanomaterials were successfully prepared via liquid-phase synthesis. The experimental results showed that Cd doping can effectively shorten the bandgap, where the optical bandgap range of Cd-doping photocatalysts were 3.31–3.36 eV; in particular, the Cd5-ZQ (Cd contents of 0.5 wt%) sample reduced the bandgap from 3.39 to 3.31 eV compared to that of pure ZQ. This is consistent with the experimental results, where the simulation calculation results indicated the bandgap reduced from 3.107 to 2.912 eV after introducing Cd. Photoluminescence spectroscopy results confirmed the Cd-ion dopants efficiently capture excited electrons and further prolongs the charge lifetime. The degradation of a methylene blue solution under simulated solar light irradiation revealed that the photocatalytic properties of Cd-ZQ nanomaterial with suitable dopant concentration (Cd content 0.5 wt%) was significantly better than those of pure ZQ. The underlying mechanism involves a synergistic effect, and a reasonable and convenient strategy for uprate performance is presented.

Rice bran, an underutilized by-product obtained from outer rice layers, has received wide interest due to its abundance, eco-friendliness, and low cost. In this research, cellulose , hemicellulose and lignin as the main components of rice bran were fractionated, and their Cd(II) adsorption capacity, behavior and mechanism were further studied. The adsorption capacity of cellulose for Cd(II) was 5.79 mg/g within the equilibrium time of 10 min, which was 1.8 and 3.6 times those of hemicellulose and lignin, respectively. The Cd(II) adsorption onto cellulose exhibited monolayer surface behavior, whilst the heterogeneous adsorption behavior was observed for hemicellulose and lignin. These differences were related to the discrepancy of morphology and chemical composition in three polymers. The multi-hole sticks morphology of cellulose and porous blocky structure of hemicellulose were observed, while lignin showed compact and agglomerated blocky structure. Cellulose had numerous available adsorption sites including the oxygen-containing functional groups, which bonded with Cd(II) driven by chemical interaction. In conclusion, it highlights that cellulose from rice bran has the great potential of being applied as adsorbent for the Cd(II) removal.

In this study, a multiple binding sites ligand, 5-(4-carboxyphenoxy)nicotinic acid ligand (H 2 cpna), was used to construct metal complexes with Zn 2+ , Cd 2+ , Mn 2+ and Co 2+ by solvothermal reaction, and four new complexes were constructed, namely, [Zn (cpna)•H2O]n (1),[Cd (cpna) (CH 3 CN)·2H 2 O] n ( 2 ), [Mn (cpna)•2H 2 O] n ( 3 ) and Co(cpna)•2H 2 O] n ( 4 ); All the complexes were characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis and infrared analysis in the solid state; Single crystal x-ray diffraction analyses reveal that complexes 1 and 2 have two-dimensional network structures, complexes 3 and 4 have three-dimensional structures. In addition, Luminescence behavior of complex 1 and 2 was investigated and magnetic properties of complex 3 and 4 were studied. The fluorescent test results show that the fluorescence intensity of complex 1 is higher than that of ligand and emission band can be considered as LLCT emission of ligand; The Magnetic results indicate weak ferromagentic interactions in complex 3 and χ m T value rises slowly and then decreases sharply from 300 K to 2 K. However, magnetic results indicate antiferromagentic interactions in complex 4 and χ m T value can be divided into three parts with the change of temperature from 300 K to 2 K.
