Sulphate radical (SO 4 · - ) -based advanced oxidation process (SR-AOP) is a promising sewage treatment technology. Reduced graphene oxide (rGO) supported Co 3 O 4 composites were synthesized by a hydrothermal method for the degradation of iohexol (IOH) in the rGO/Co 3 O 4 /peroxymonosulfate (PMS) system. Experimental results show that rGO/Co 3 O 4 possessed much better PMS activated ability than pure GO or Co 3 O 4 , which is ascribed to the summation of rGO and Co 3 O 4 . The efficiency of rGO/Co 3 O 4 composite, single GO and Co 3 O 4 nanocrystals for the degradation of IOH were 98.7%, 15.8% and 79.8% at 15 min, and their corresponding reaction rate constants ( k app ) were 0.21 min −1 , 0.0077 min −1 and 0.080 min −1 , respectively. The results of active species capture experiment and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) experiment, showed that singlet oxygen is the main active species, which is non-radical degradation. rGO is conducive to the electron conduction of Co 3 O 4 , thus improving the efficiency of PMS activation. The system is simple and efficient, which is an effective technology to remove IOH.

A novel Co3O4 nanoparticles-decorated graphene (GR) composite was synthesized by electro-deposition and characterized by scanning electron micrographs, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Then, amperometric biosensors based on a Co3O4 nanoparticles-decorated GR composite modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) were developed for the sensitive determination of L-tryptophan (Trp). The direct electrooxidation behaviors of Trp on the Co3O4/GR/Nafion/GCE were carefully investigated by cyclic voltammetry and square wave voltammetry. The results indicated that Trp showed an increase of the oxidation peak current with a negative shift of the oxidation peak potential compared with that on the bare GCE. Under optimum conditions, the proposed biosensor can be applied to the quantification analysis of Trp with a wide linear range covering 0.05–10 μM (R = 0.996) and a low detection limit of 0.01 μM. The experimental results also showed that the sensor exhibited good reproducibility, long-term stability as well as high selectivity. Moreover, the novel biosensor for the detection of Trp in a real amino acid sample with satisfactory results has been proved.

The efficiency of hydrogen production from water electrolysis is mainly restricted by the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The mainstream adsorbate evolution mechanism and lattice oxygen-mediated mechanism face a trade-off between performance and stability, while the diatomic oxygen mechanism (DOM) based on the O–O coupling provides a solution to overcome this limitation. However, the intrinsic principles that facilitate the O–O coupling remain unclear, which complicates material design. In this work, we use spinel Co3O4 as a model and identify that the asymmetric sites formed by the octahedral Co with O defects and the original octahedral Co are effective sites for O–O coupling. Based on this, we propose using the degree of asymmetry of the dual site as a descriptor to quantify the reaction free energy of rate-determining step along the DOM pathway, presenting a volcano plot relationship. Experimental validation shows that plasma-prepared Co3O4 enables O–O coupling, requiring only 287 and 420 mV overpotentials to achieve current densities of 10 and 1000 mA cm–2 in 0.5 M H2SO4, respectively. This work demonstrates efficient sites for the OER along the DOM pathway in Co3O4, providing valuable insights for designing high-performance OER catalysts.

Co 3 O 4 nanochain and Co 3 O 4 /CeO 2 heterostructures were prepared via an electrospinning process and subsequent calcination . The formation and shape evolution from Co 3 O 4 nanochains to Co 3 O 4 /CeO 2 composite nanobelts were investigated, suggesting that both components and preparation parameters play important roles in resulted morphology and properties. Homogeneous Co 3 O 4 /CeO 2 junctions in belt samples were formed towards enhanced catalysis performance. Well-dispersed Au nanoparticles were deposited on Co 3 O 4 /CeO 2 composite nanostructures or doped inside through reduction and direct calcination route method, respectively. The loading of Au nanoparticles significantly enhanced catalytic performance with onset CO conversion at 100 °C and resulted in CO conversion over at 127 °C.

Considerable efforts have been devoted recently to design and fabrication of high performance and low cost electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, catalytic activity of current electrocatalysts is usually restricted by high onset potential and limited active sites. Herein, we fabricated three-dimensional (3D) highly ordered mesoporous Pd-Co 3 O 4 composite materials as excellent electrocatalysts for OER in alkaline solution with high activity and stability. Three-dimensional highly ordered mesoporous Co 3 O 4 material was firstly synthesized using mesoporous silica KIT-6 as hard template. Then, Pd-Co 3 O 4 nanomaterials were prepared by a simple reduction method. The as-prepared 3D mesoporous Pd-Co 3 O 4 catalysts have ordered mesoporous structure with a high surface area of 81.0 m 2 g −1 . Three-dimensional highly ordered mesoporous structure can facilitate diffusion and penetration of electrolyte and oxygen. Moreover, the catalysts can also keep catalyst particles in a well dispersed condition with more catalytic active sites. Electrochemical measurements reveal that the 3D mesoporous Pd-Co 3 O 4 catalysts exhibit superior performance in alkaline solution with low onset potential (0.415 V vs . SCE) and excellent long-duration cycling stability.

The development of highly active non-precious metal bifunctional oxygen catalysts is of great significance in improving the efficiency of zinc-air batteries (ZABs). In this work, Co 3 O 4 is modified by a simple sulfur-doping strategy, which achieves a sulfur-doped Co 3 O 4 (S-Co 3 O 4 ) with significantly-enhanced oxygen catalytic activity. The doping of sulfur promotes the exposure of cobalt active sites and brings abundant oxygen vacancies, which provide additional active sites and enhance the conductivity of Co 3 O 4 . Consequently, S-Co 3 O 4 exhibits a low overpotential of 318 mV in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and an improved half-wave potential (0.788 V) for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). In addition, the sulfur doping increases the ORR kinetic current density of pristine Co 3 O 4 by a factor of 49. The assembled ZABs based on S-Co 3 O 4 cathodes show a higher peak power density (98.90 mW cm −2 ) than the commercial Pt/C + RuO 2 -based ZABs. This work reveals that the intrinsic oxygen catalytic activity of Co 3 O 4 can be significantly strengthened by sulfur doping, which can modify its structural characteristics and introduce structural defects. Microwave-assisted catalysis is a promising technique for enhancing catalytic reactions through selective heating, potentially leading to improved reaction rates and energy efficiency. However, understanding the complex interactions between microwave absorption and catalytic performance in composite catalysts remains a challenge. In this study, Cobalt oxide(Co 3 O 4 )/silicon carbide(SiC) composite catalysts with varying SiC content were synthesized and characterized to investigate the relationship between their microwave absorption properties and catalytic performance. Quantitative analysis revealed that SiC and Co 3 O 4 absorb microwave energy through relaxation polarization and magnetic loss mechanisms, respectively. Increasing SiC content enhanced the dielectric and magnetic loss capabilities of the composites, with the Co 3 O 4 /SiC composite containing 10 wt% SiC (Co 3 O 4 /SiC-10) exhibiting a dielectric loss tangent of 3.87 and a minimum reflection loss of −35dB. However, higher SiC content decreased the surface chemically adsorbed oxygen, surface oxygen mobility, and benzene adsorption capacity, weakening the catalytic activity under conventional heating. The Co 3 O 4 /SiC-10 sample achieved a significantly better balance between microwave absorption and catalytic performance, significantly outperforming the original Co 3 O 4 sample under microwave irradiation. These founding establishes a quantitative research methodology that correlates dielectric loss tangent, reflection loss, and other crucial parameters with microwave absorption performance and further catalytic properties, providing insights for the rational design of catalysts that optimize both microwave absorption and catalytic activity.

Photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) degradation of refractory antibiotics has attracted great interest in recent years, thereinto, the selection and design of efficient catalysts is particularly pivotal. With the in-depth study of semiconductor materials, the composite electrodes which can inhibit the recombination between electrons and holes have made significant progress in the field of PEC. Herein, the Co 3 O 4 @NiMn-LDH photoanode with stratified core-shell heterostructure was prepared and its removal process of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) was evaluated. The study showed that the constructed heterostructures had the following advantages: (i) the nutrient transporting arteries of Co 3 O 4 nanoneedle acted as charge transport channels to promote the induced charge migration and separation; (ii) The petal-like NiMn-LDH nanosheets were significantly adjustable and had excellent charge storage capabilities, which could remarkably collect solar energy leading to more active species; (iii) the pollutants could be gathered on the “spider network” surface of Co 3 O 4 @NiMn-LDH by electrostatic adsorption proved by DFT calculations, which was conducive to electrolyte penetration and utilization of the active site. The optimized Co 3 O 4 @NiMn-LDH-3.00 catalyst showed excellent PEC degradation activity and stability for SMX (initial removal rate of 98.00 %, removal rate of 75.12 % after five cycles). Based on the energy band matching and morphology construction proposed in this study, this unique layered core-shell heterostructure could be expected to achieve excellent PEC performance through synergistic effects.

Developing an accurate, reliable, and stable glucose detection sensor poses a formidable challenge for the food industry. In this study, hydrothermal and wet chemical methods were employed to fabricate a Pt single-atom catalyst on Co3O4 (Co3O4/Pt SAs), where dispersed Pt atoms collaboratively catalyze the electrochemical reaction on the electrode surface. Subsequently, the integration of the microelectrode with polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEG-DA) hydrogel and a dual-channel microfluidic chip facilitated continuous and rapid glucose detection. The addition of 5% PEG-DA hydrogel served to eliminate interference and expedite glucose detection, while the design of the dual-channel microfluidic chip generated microscale vortices, providing ample reaction opportunities for the target glucose while preventing interference from the mixing of previous and current reaction solutions. The research exhibited a favorable linear detection range from 1 to 800 μM, with a detection limit of 0.84 μM. Furthermore, validation of the device’s feasibility in real samples demonstrated a glucose recovery rate ranging from 94.9 to 104.4% in beverages.

In this work, distinct-morphological Co 3 O 4 /Nickel foams were prepared through a simple hydrothermal method and a subsequent heat treatment process. The morphology of Co 3 O 4 can be efficiently modulated from hexagonal nanosheets to nanobunches and urchin-like microspheres by manipulating the NH 4 F concentration. For the urchin-like Co 3 O 4 /Nickel foam composites, the minimum reflection loss (RL min ) value can reach −42.53 dB at a matching thickness of 2.7 mm. Theoretical analysis shows that the enhanced microwave absorption intensity is mainly originated from dielectric losses including significant interfacial polarization of the abundant interfaces, intrinsic dipoles of Co 3 O 4 and magnetic losses containing natural resonance and eddy current loss are favorable for the impedance matching. Simultaneously, multiple scattering occurring within the 3D Ni network skeleton are considered to promote the microwave absorption performance. Furthermore, a quadrilateral cone array of the resultant urchin-like Co 3 O 4 /Nickel foam composites has a RL min of −56.7 dB and an effective absorption bandwidth can achieve 9.44 GHz. This work could be beneficial for exploiting high-efficient magnetic-dielectric microwave absorption materials via the microstructural design.

As a prototypical heavy metal pollutant, copper ions (Cu 2+ ) are ubiquitously present in industrial wastewater from electroplating and metallurgical processes. Their excessive discharge poses severe threats to ecological systems and human health, underscoring the critical need for advanced detection technologies. This study pioneers a light-driven oxygen vacancy engineering strategy to develop a Co 3 O 4 -based sensor through an in situ growth approach on transparent fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) substrates. The engineered oxygen vacancies (O v ) enable ultraviolet-triggered directional migration of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, with electrons accumulating at O v defect states to directly reduce Cu 2+ via Cu 2+ + 2e − → Cu 0 . Crucially, the dynamic Co 3+ /Co 2+ valence cycling ensures continuous regeneration of active sites, circumventing the pre-enrichment requirement inherent to conventional electrochemical methods. Experimental evaluations demonstrate exceptional performance: the sensitivity within the linear range of 0.1–1 μM is 11.76 μA·μM −1 , and the detection limit (22.99 nM) is extremely low and practical recoveries of 83–127 % in real water matrices. This study provides a light-driven oxygen vacancy mechanism for the rapid detection of heavy metal ions without enrichment, and provides a new idea for the development of in situ monitoring technology for environmental pollutants.

The derivatives of primary Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) products are indispensable to the sustainable FTS run. For the one-pot conversion of FTS-based 1-octene to nonanol, nitrogen-doped cobalt oxides were obtained through hydrothermal synthesis followed by ammonia atmosphere thermal treatment (AATT) at 325 °C with varying treatment time. The AATT significantly affected the phase structure and the surface element valence states of the synthetic samples. The resulting (Co 3 O 4 ) x N showed high catalytic activity toward the reaction of 1-octene with CO + H 2 to nonanol through a successive hydroformylation-hydrogenation process, with conversion of 98 % and selectivity of close to 80 %. The crucial role of the CoO phase and the enhanced adsorption of the reactant molecules by the induced oxygen vacancy (O v ) were discussed based on multiple physicochemical properties characterization and activity evaluation.
