Oxygen vacancies are crucial for enhancing oxygen ion transport in solid-state materials. Therefore, an approach was established to efficiently adjust the surface oxygen vacancy concentration in the solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) cathodes. This method employs NaBH 4 solution to capture lattice oxygen on the cathode surface, enabling precise control over both the surface oxygen vacancy concentration and the transition metal ion valence states in spinel CoFe 2 O 4 (CFO) by modulating the NaBH 4 treatment duration. The results indicate that CFO-10, treated with NaBH 4 solution for 10 min, exhibits optimal electrochemical catalytic activity. This enhancement is primarily attributed to the improved oxygen adsorption-dissociation and charge transfer processes. At 750 °C, CFO-10 shows a polarization resistance (Rp) of 0.032Ω cm 2 , representing a reduction of 42.8 % compared to CFO. Additionally, CFO-10 achieves a peak power density (PPD) of 923 mW·cm −2 , representing a 78.5 % increase compared to CFO. This study provides new insights for optimizing SOFC spinel oxide cathode performance and opens a promising avenue for the development of other high-performance catalytic materials.

The broad spectrum applications of CoFe 2 O 4 NPs have attracted much interest in medicine, environment and industry, resulting in exceedingly higher exposures to humans and environmental systems in succeeding days. Their health effects and potential biological impacts need to be determined for risk assessment. Zebrafish ( Danio rerio ) embryos were exposed to environmentally relevant doses of nano-CoFe 2 O 4 (mean diameter of 40 nm) with a concentration range of 10–500 μM for 96 h. Acute toxic end points were evaluated by survival rate, malformation, hatching delay, heart dysfunction and tail flexure of larvae. Dose and time dependent developmental toxicity with severe cardiac edema, down regulation of metabolism, hatching delay and tail/spinal cord flexure and apoptosis was observed. The biochemical changes were evaluated by ROS, Catalase (CAT), Lipid peroxidation (LPO), Acid phophatase (AP) and Glutatione s- transferase (GST). An Agglomeration of NPs and dissolution of ions induces severe mechanical damage to membranes and oxidative stress. Severe apoptosis of cells in the head, heart and tail region with inhibition of catalase confirms ROS induced acute toxicity with increasing concentration. Increased activity of GST and AP at lower concentrations of CoFe 2 O 4 NPs demonstrates the severe oxidative stress. Circular dichroism (CD) spectra indicated the weak interactions of NPs with BSA and slight changes in α-helix structure. In addition, CoFe 2 O 4 NPs at lower concentrations do not show any considerable interference with assay components and analytical instruments. The results are possible elucidation of pathways of toxicity induced by these particles, as well as contributing in defining the protocols for risk assessment of these nanoparticles.

The efficiency of strain-mediated magnetoelectric (ME) coupling is fundamentally governed by the fidelity of stress transfer across the interface between magnetostrictive and piezoelectric phases. In polymer-based nanocomposites, however, mechanical energy is often dissipated due to viscoelastic damping at interfaces, which severely limits the energy transduction efficiency. Herein, we fabricated flexible P(VDF-TrFE)-based ME nanocomposites through an intrinsically anchored strategy to enhance the interfacial stress transfer. By directing the growth of magnetic CoFe 2 O 4 on self-assembled s PPTA/BTAc aromatic backbones, we created intrinsically anchored magnetic nanofibers (IAM NFs) with skeleton-integrated nanostructure. In this geometric-chemical hybrid structure, molecular templates are interwoven with the magnetic phase, providing an aromatic backbone for direct stress conduction and abundant functional groups for molecular-level interlocking with polymer chains. Consequently, the composite achieves highly efficient strain-mediated ME coupling of 42.8 mV·cm −1 ·Oe −1 at an exceptionally low filler content of 1 wt%. By optimizing interfacial efficacy rather than increased filler content, the ME nanocomposite films maintain exceptional lightweight and flexibility, evidenced by breaking elongation of 23.3%. This work provides a strategic pathway for developing high-performance, lightweight, flexible electronics through rational interfacial engineering and morphological control.

The treatment of wastewater laden with energetic compounds, particularly 2,2′,4,4′,6,6′-hexanitrostilbene (HNS), remains highly challenging owing to the environmental persistence and inherent toxicity of nitroaromatic derivatives. Herein, we reported a CoFe 2 O 4 /PMS system for the first-time efficient degradation of HNS. The CoFe 2 O 4 /PMS process afforded 96.3% removal of HNS within 150 min, together with 89.3% chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal and 49.5% total organic carbon (TOC) removal, indicating substantial deep oxidation and partial mineralization. Mechanistic studies combining quenching experiments, EPR spectroscopy, electrochemical analysis, and DFT calculations disclosed a synergistic radical/non-radical pathway dominated by 1 O 2 , with Fe incorporation enhancing PMS adsorption, charge transfer, and catalytic activation. HPLC-MS revealed degradation intermediates and supported three plausible degradation pathways, whereas QSAR analysis indicated progressive detoxification during oxidation. The catalyst further exhibited excellent stability, negligible metal leaching, and broad applicability toward actual HNS production wastewater and other energetic organic pollutants. These findings identify CoFe 2 O 4 /PMS as a promising platform for the efficient remediation of hazardous energetic compound wastewater.

In-situ preparing robust CoFe 2 O 4 /PCN PMS activator for multi-pollutant degradation. • Complete degradation TC within 3 min with the rate constant 24-fold higher than CN • Degradation intermediates, routes and toxicity were explored • Wide light absorption, exposed active sites, and charge behavior boost photocatalysis Facing the urgent environmental crisis, it is imperative to create an efficient and robust technology for treating diverse pollutants in aquatic environments. Herein, a CoFe 2 O 4 /PCN composite was designed via a facile in-situ growth method, in which CoFe 2 O 4 uniformly grows on carbon nitride. This architecture not only forms a close interface that facilitates efficient charge separation and migration, but also introduces abundant mixed-valence metal sites, that serve as superior active centers for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation and subsequent organic pollutant removal. Specifically, under visible light, the optimized catalyst can 100% degrade TC within 3 min (complete degrade rhodamine B within 20 s, methyl orange within 40 s, and methylene blue within 3 min), and the rate constant was 24-fold higher than pristine CN, surpassing most reported catalysts. The catalyst also demonstrates excellent recyclability and broad pH adaptability. The mechanism behind the performance enhancement stems from the significantly broadened light absorption (supported by UV–vis DRS), fully exposed active sites (evidenced by SEM/TEM/AFM and N₂ adsorption), and enhanced charge behaviors (supported by PCR, EIS, PL/TRPL and KPFM), especially caused by strong internal electric field. At last, the active species, degradation intermediates and their toxicity were investigated using TC degradation as a model, coupled with DFT theoretical calculations. This work proposes a rational design strategy toward constructing efficient and robust photocatalysts, revealing significant promise for water remediation. In chlorination disinfection treatment, residual iodinated X-ray contrast media (ICMs) are the precursors to iodinated disinfection by-products (I-DBPs). This study employed CoFe2O4nanoparticle catalytic peracetic acid oxidation (CoFe2O4/PAA) to remove iopamidol (IPM) and control I-DBP formation. The experimental results demonstrated that over 90% of the IPM degradation was achieved in 40 min. The metastable intermediate (≡Co(II)-OO(O)CCH3), rather than the alkoxyl radicals, was identified as the dominant oxidation species (ROS). The electron transfer pathways between the metastable intermediate and IPM were oxygen-atom transfer and single-electron transfer. The monoiodoacetic acid formation potential (MIAAFP) was investigated. In ultraviolet-activated ClO−(UV/chlorine), a portion of I−generated through IPM dehalogenation underwent conversion to reactive iodine species (RIS), consequently elevating the MIAAFP. In CoFe2O4/PAA, the MIAAFP was less than 43% of that in UV/chlorine, which can be attributed to the complete conversion of I−into iodate IO3−without generating RIS. CoFe2O4/PAA is thus a promising treatment for removing ICMs and controlling I-DBP formation due to the efficient degradation of ICMs while avoiding the generation of RIS.

Achieving optimal morphologies specific for applications continues to be a challenge in the case of mesoporous ceramic oxide materials. It is well known that for several applications, nanograins need to remain un-agglomerated; this is because such particles offer larger specific surface. Here a novel template, economic route has been used for the synthesis of magnetic cobalt iron oxide with a hierarchical (and hence extended surface) morphology. These microspheres exhibit a high surface area of 786 m2 g−1 with large pore density. The particles are found to be excellent adsorbents and catalysts for oxidative-dissociation of Rhodamine B (RhB) and 4-Nitrophenol (4-NP) from water at room temperature. We also report the microwave absorbing capabilities of these materials, in the frequency range 1 MHz to 3 GHz. Interestingly these extended surface microspheres possess fine absorption of microwaves with two broad reflection loss peaks at −59 dB and −49.85 dB in the entire range. This is substantially different from the smooth surface cobalt ferrite that possesses only one absorption peak (−41.9 dB) in the low frequency region. Hence the reported material has plausible applications as magnetic adsorbents for pollution abatement, and also as electromagnetic shields.

Rational fabrication of an electrocatalyst with excellent stability, conductivity, and activity is urgently demanded for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). In this work, Ru-regulated hierarchical CoFe/CoFe 2 O 4 nanoparticles with graphitic carbon shells were successfully fabricated via self-assembling and vapor reduction strategies. Our investigation uncovers high concentrations of octahedral Co 3+ sites in electrocatalysts can be triumphantly acquired via moderate Ru doping, which could give rise to excellent electrocatalytic activities during OER. In addition, the design of CoFe alloys and graphitic carbon shells can compensate for the weak conductivity of cobalt ferrites. Based on the intrinsic stability, improved conductivity and activity, the as-prepared electrocatalyst yields a low overpotential of 237 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and a small Tafel slope of 47 mV dec −1 in 1.0 M KOH electrolyte, exhibiting outstanding electrocatalytic activities for OER.

Novel reusable acid-resistant magnetic polymer nanospheres-immobilized MIL-100 (CoFe 2 O 4 @Polymer@MIL-100) catalyst was prepared by a layer-by-layer method to achieve a controllable structure. The obtained core-shell catalyst consisted of modified magnetic nanoparticles as the core, a carboxylic-functionalized polymer as the protective layer, and an MIL-100 shell as the active catalytic layer by chemical bonds on the polymer. The catalysts showed good stability, good magnetic saturation, and acid corrosion resistance. The thickness of the MIL-100 shell could be adjusted by controlling the metal salt concentration and the number of layer-by-layer cycles. Nano-sized MIL-100 showed better mass transfer efficiency and catalytic activity. A conversion of 97.7% after 10 min was observed during acetalization when using CoFe 2 O 4 @Polymer@MIL-100 as the catalyst. CoFe 2 O 4 @Polymer@MIL-100 could be reused at least five times. The use of a polymer layer on CoFe 2 O 4 @Polymer@MIL-100 prevented acidic ligands from corroding the magnetic core. Chemical bonds between MIL-100 and functional magnetic polymer cores improved the catalyst’s stability. CoFe 2 O 4 @Polymer@MIL-100 exhibited high activity, excellent stability, and easy magnetic separation.

Various additives in smart materials are attracting wide attention owing to the improved adaptable functions, such as the ferromagnetic additive. However, the effect of additives' morphology is not well investigated, causing inconsistent phenomena reported for the same additive. In this work, the spherical and rod-shaped CoFe2O4 nanoparticles were prepared by varying the reaction process of solvothermal, and introduced as dispersed phases into strain rate-sensitive materials to fabricate new strain-rate sensitive composite materials. The influence of magnetic particle morphology on its rheological performance was investigated. The results showed that the strain-rate sensitive composites with rod-shaped CoFe2O4 (RCFO) have a higher storage modulus and viscosity than the ones with spherical CoFe2O4 (SCFO) nanoparticles. The relationship between shear rate and viscosity indicates that all samples exhibited significant shear thinning effects in the range of shear rates studied, and the RCFO nanoparticles are useful for achieving a higher viscosity in comparison to the SCFO nanoparticles at the same shear rate. This work proves that the morphology of additives plays an important role in adjusting the property of smart materials and is expected to present some principles to choose the suitable morphology of additives for the design of new magneto-rheological materials.

Here we present a simple method to prepare a highly efficient three components nanocomposites via thermal degradation of layered double metal hydroxides (LDHs)@polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) composites. Co 7 Fe 3 /CoFe 2 O 4 @C obtained from this method is applied to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to degrade polluted organics and showed excellent performance. The best removal RhB efficiency of Co 7 Fe 3 /CoFe 2 O 4 @C (Co/Fe = 1:1) is near 100% within 10 min and the lowest ions elution (∼0.05 mg/L) under pH = 7, which is also better than the performance of the precursor Co–Fe LDH. Through further cycling experiments and degradation of p -nitrophenol, the stability and catalytic performance of the catalyst were verified. Finally, free radical scavenging experiments prove ·OH and SO 4 · - radicals participating in the reaction, which are the key factors for degradation. Based on the above, the derivation of the mechanism of Co 7 Fe 3 /CoFe 2 O 4 @C (Co/Fe = 1:1) catalyzing PMS to degrade polluted organics was proposed, and we consider this catalyst has great application prospect.

The improved photocatalytic activity of TiO 2 with the addition of spinel CoFe 2 O 4 as an effective catalyst for O 2 reduction reaction (ORR) is studied and proved in this study. CoFe 2 O 4 -TiO 2 heterostructure nanoparticles are prepared by a reflux condensation and two-step hydrolysis-hydrothermal method. The addition of trace CoFe 2 O 4 onto TiO 2 can improve its affinity to O 2 , generate a faster transportation of photo-induced carriers, but hardly affect band structure. With an appropriate amount of CoFe 2 O 4 to TiO 2 , a remarkable acceleration occurs in photocatalytic decolorization of dye wastewater, and the calculated apparent kinetic constant ( k app ) of the composite (0.020 min −1 ) is 2.4 and 5.6 times of pure TiO 2 (0.0085 min −1 ) and CoFe 2 O 4 (0.0036 min −1 ), respectively. Quenching experiments with different radical scavengers show that O 2 –∙ is the key oxidative radical in all photocatalytical reactions. Meanwhile, the rapid growth of O 2 –∙ production by CoFe 2 O 4 -TiO 2 is proved to be a major cause for photocatalytic performance improvement. Furthermore, an improved electrochemical ORR catalytic ability by CoFe 2 O 4 -TiO 2 is verified and the 2-plus-2 electron route generates the same product (H 2 O 2 ) as the photocatalytic process. Therefore, the synergistic operation of photocatalytic and catalytic ORR process by CoFe 2 O 4 -TiO 2 resulted in a rapid degradation of dye wastewater.
