Metal-organic-framework-derived porous core/shell CoP polyhedrons intertwined with 2D MXene as anode for Na-ion storage

Yanyan Ma,Hongwei Zhang,Haofei Cong,Yuxiao Wang,Shuwen Xin,Peilong Xu,Yuanbin Qin,Guangxu Xu,Xiaochan Kang,Fengyun Wang

Transition metal phosphides (TMPs) are considered satisfactory anode candidates for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) due to their high energy density and modest plateau. However, the TMPs anode suffers from poor cycling and rate properties owing to the negative effects of severe volumetric expansion and sluggish reaction kinetics. Herein, a novel structure of porous core/shell CoP@N-C nano polyhedral embedding on 2D MXene nanosheets (CoP@N-C/MXene) was synthesized by self-assembly and in-situ phosphorization methods. The porous CoP@N-C with the unique core/shell structure benefits the infiltration of electrolytes and alleviates the volumetric change. Besides, high-conductive 2D MXene nanosheets could enhance electrical conductivity and charge transfer kinetics, and effectively inhibit CoP@N-C pulverization and agglomeration. Based on the above advantages, the as-prepared CoP@N-C/MXene anode delivers an excellent cycling capacity, outstanding rate capability and low-temperature high-rate capability. This synthetic strategy of CoP@N-C/MXene architecture can be extended to other materials which are promising for SIBs electrodes.

Electronic structure tailoring via P-ligation in CoP nanoflowers drives bifunctional electrocatalysis for plastic waste valorization and hydrogen evolution

Jing Su,Tan Li,Xin Liu,Qihui Song,Jianmeng Cen,Zhongyang Luo,Kaige Wang

The valorization of plastic waste via electrocatalytic conversion into value-added chemicals and hydrogen represents a promising sustainable technology, yet is hindered by the lack of efficient and cost-effective bifunctional catalysts. Herein, we develop a hierarchically structured cobalt phosphide nanoflower catalyst anchored on nickel foam (CoP-F@NF) through fluoride-mediated morphology control. Comprehensive characterization confirms the successful synthesis of crystalline CoP nanoflowers with homogeneous elemental distribution. When applied to polyethylene terephthalate (PET) hydrolysate electro-oxidation, CoP-F@NF exhibits exceptional activity, high formic acid selectivity (>95 %) and Faradaic efficiency (>86 %), attributed to synergistic effects of the CoP phase and nanoflower architecture that optimize mass/charge transport (Tafel slope: 110.12 mV dec −1 ). Mechanistic studies reveal the dominant reaction pathway: ethylene glycol → glycolaldehyde → glyoxal → formic acid. Simultaneously, CoP-F@NF demonstrates efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity (Tafel slope: 117.7 mV dec −1 ), leveraging PET oxidation to replace energy-intensive oxygen evolution. In an integrated two-electrode system, CoP-F@NF achieves concurrent formic acid production (FE: >92 %, selectivity: >92 % at 2.0 V) and H₂ generation with superior stability over five cycles. Control experiments with CoO-F@NF and density functional theory calculations reveal that P-modulation elevates the Co d-band center (εd = −1.295 eV vs. -1.601 eV for CoO), optimizing intermediate adsorption strength for both anodic oxidation (weakened *CHO-CHO binding) and cathodic HER. This work establishes a noble metal-free route for plastic waste upcycling and green hydrogen production via electronic and morphological catalyst design.

Core-corona Co/CoP clusters strung on carbon nanotubes as a Schottky catalyst for glucose oxidation assisted H2 production

Yuanyuan Zhang,Yunfeng Qiu,Zhuo Ma,Yanping Wang,Yongxia Zhang,Yuxin Ying,Yinan Jiang,Yixue Zhu,Shaoqin Liu

The simultaneous improvement of intrinsic activities and the number of active sites in electrocatalysts is the bottle-neck issue for H2 production. Herein, commercial CNTs serving as conductive kernels are in situ coupled with 3D ZIF-67 derived Co/CoP core-corona clusters. Such a hierarchical bead string nanostructure not only possesses highly exposed active sites, but also favours fast electron transfer for electrocatalytic kinetics. Our material shows excellent HER (η10 = −151 mV) and glucose oxidation reaction (GOR) performance, showing a smaller hybrid water splitting potential of 1.42 V compared to conventional water splitting (η10 = 1.74 V) for H2 production. DFT calculations indicate that the Schottky heterointerface at Co/CoP decreases the initial H2O dissociation energy barrier and possesses a thermoneutral H* adsorption free energy for the HER, as well as reducing the energy barrier for the GOR. Meanwhile, more oxidative cobalt oxyhydroxide favoured the GOR process. The present work opens a new avenue for designing Mott–Schottky multifunctional electrocatalysts for both energy-saving H2 production and value-added products.

CoP/C composites synthesized by an in situ phosphorization method as high-performance anode materials for lithium-ion batteries

Xinyue Zhang,Fulei Liu,Jiachang Zhao,Jun Jin

Because of their great capacity to store lithium, cobalt-based phosphides are utilized as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, in practice, they are prone to capacity fading and volume expansion, which restrict their long-term use. Herein, a simple method was proposed to prepare CoP nanoparticles encapsulated in a Co-MOF-71 derived carbon layer (CoP/C). The carbon in the composites greatly improved the cycling stability and rate capability of CoP/C when compared with pure CoP. CoP/C exhibits a high initial discharge capacity of 823 mA h g−1, a cycling durability of 338 mA h g−1 over 100 cycles, a good initial coulombic efficiency of ca. 76%, and an excellent rate capability (1 A g−1: 318 mA h g−1 and 2 A g−1: 284 mA h g−1).

MOF nanosheet-derived carbon-layer-coated CoP/g-C3N4 photocatalysts with enhanced charge transfer for efficient photocatalytic H2 generation

Yan Ma,Dianjun Chi,Yuping Tao,Shengjun Liu,Lei Dong,Yu Chen,Lifang He,Kui Zhang

Catalysts with low cost, high efficiency, and no need for precious metal cocatalysts are the key to realizing the maximum utilization of solar energy-efficient hydrogen (H2) production. In this study, a series of graphitic carbon nitride-derived catalysts (g-C3N4/CoP@C) were successfully obtained by in situ phosphating of g-C3N4/Co-BDC. A CoP@C cocatalyst developed with Co-BDC nanosheets as precursors can accelerate the H2 generation of g-C3N4. The close interface between CoP@C and g-C3N4 increased the electron–hole separation efficiency. Moreover, the CoP@C surface carbon accelerated electron transfer and increased the light absorption range. The prepared g-C3N4/CoP@C composite material exhibited H2 production capability up to 1968 μmol g−1 (3 h), approximately 129.9 times that of g-C3N4. Therefore, the CoP@C cocatalyst is proposed as an alternative to non-precious metal cocatalysts based on the findings of the study.

Interfacial electronic structure modulation of CoP nanowires with FeP nanosheets for enhanced hydrogen evolution under alkaline water/seawater electrolytes

Chaojie Lyu,Jiarun Cheng,Kaili Wu,Jiwen Wu,Ning Wang,Zhonglu Guo,Pengfei Hu,Woon-Ming Lau,Jinlong Zheng

Interface engineering is an effective strategy to regulate surface properties and improve the catalytic activities of materials. Here we develop an interface engineered core-shell structure FeP@CoP catalyst, which only requires 50 mV to realize current density of 10 mA/cm 2 with a low Tafel slope of 51.1 mV/dec in 1 M KOH. Density functional theory (DFT) simulations indicate the FeP@CoP interface exhibits optimal H* adsorption energy (0.06 eV) compared with pure-phased CoP (0.26 eV) and pure-phased FeP (−0.18 eV), which is attributed to the significantly electronic structure modulation of Fe and Co atoms at the interface domain. Furthermore, the assembled NiFe LDH@Co 3 O 4 /NF || FeP@CoP/NF electrolyzer only demands the voltages of 1.50 and 1.70 V to achieve 10 and 100 mA/cm 2 under 1 M KOH. The electrolyzer also exhibits considerable catalytic performance in alkaline seawater electrolyte. What's more, it also can be driven by a commercial Si solar panel under AM 1.5 G 100 mW/cm 2 illumination. The regulation of interface-effect paves a novel avenue for constructing high-performance catalysts for hydrogen production .

Freestanding cathode design for lithium-sulfur batteries: CoP/Co-PCNF sandwich structure to enhance adsorption and catalysis for polysulfides

Jiaojiao Xia,Peng Xu,Yiyang Chen,Jianlin Li,Long Li,Jiaojing Shao,Chuan Yu

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are exceedingly restrained in practical application originating from the shuttling of soluble lithium polysulfides (LiPSs), despite their superelevated theoretical specific capacity as well as energy density . Herein, a flexible carbon nanofiber membrane in situ embedded with Co, CoP nanoparticles (Co-PCNF, CoP/Co-PCNF) was designed to fabricate a unique sandwich structure, as a free-standing cathode for Li-S batteries. These innovative Li-S batteries deliver an initial capacity of 993.5 mAh g −1 at 1 C, along with a substantial capacity of 814.18 mAh g −1 even over 300 cycles, which corresponds to a low capacity decay of only 0.06% per cycle. Besides, with a sulfur content of 4.5 mg cm −2 , an initial discharge capacity of 700.1 mAh g −1 was realized at 0.2 C with an excellent capacity retention rate of 91% over 200 cycles, prominent in long-cycle Li-S batteries. In this aspect, rosy cycling stability was achieved because of the impeded shuttle effect by the synergistic effect of Co and CoP compared with Co-PCNF sandwich structure as well as traditional aluminum foil. Moreover, underlying the DFT calculation, the enhanced overlap of electronic state ascribed to the conversion of fraction Co nanoparticles to CoP, triggering the adsorption capacity of CoP/Co-PCNF crucially higher than that of Co-PCNF. This observation paves ways into implementing the CoP/Co-PCNF sandwich structure as a free-standing cathode for the high-performance Li-S batteries.

A dye-sensitized solar cell based on magnetic CoP@FeP4@Carbon composite counter electrode generated an efficiency of 9.88%

Yu Du,Gentian Yue,Zhang Lan,Yueyue Gao,Jihuai Wu,Furui Tan

Transition metal phosphates have aroused wide attention and been applied in the field of energy conversion due to their high catalytic properties and low cost, but magnetic metal phosphates are rarely used in DSSC. In this work, the magnetic CoP@FeP4 thin film was prepared on carbon paper (CP) using a two-step process and proposed as a counter electrode (CE) for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The morphology of CoP@FeP4@CP with a silkworm-like structure is advantageous to enhance the catalytic ability for the interface reaction, establish a good connection between the electrode material and electrolyte, and accelerate the electron transmission. The characterizations using cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and Tafel curves all indicate that the CoP@FeP4@CP CE shows excellent electrochemical catalytic performance for the I−/I3− electrolyte. Under optimal conditions, a high power conversion efficiency of 9.88% is achieved for DSSC with CoP@FeP4@CP CE much higher than that of Pt (7.49%) and CoP@CP (8.73%) CEs. This phenomenon can be attributed to the unique chemical structure and the synergistic effect of CoP@FeP4@CP CE. CoP@FeP4@CP CE with the advantages of efficient, low cost, and facile synthesis is a promising alternative to the expensive Pt CE for the DSSCs in the future.

CoP nanoprism arrays: Pseudocapacitive behavior on the electrode-electrolyte interface and electrochemical application as an anode material for supercapacitors

Qiang Zhang,Wei-Bin Zhang,Peng Hei,Zhiqian Hou,Tingshuai Yang,Jianping Long

The self-supported transition metal phosphide with specific morphology and architecture has been investigated extensively due to excellent conductivity, stability, and morphologic diversity. In the work, cobalt phosphide with special nanoprism arrays in-situ grown on the nickel foam skeleton forms a typical three-dimensional open structure. It exhibits notable electrochemical performance when employed as an anode in a single electrode system, which owns a high mass specific capacitance (1349 F g −1 at the current density of 1 A g −1 , which is the highest compared with that in the extant literature), good rate capacity and cycle stability. Besides, pseudocapacitive contribution to the entire capacity is up to about 77%, revealing the nature of high mass specific capacitance of the as-prepared CoP@NF as the working electrode. Furthermore, an asymmetrical supercapacitor device has been fabricated using CoP@NF as an anode and CMK-3@NF as a cathode. It can deliver a high power density of 325 W kg −1 at the energy density of 24 Wh kg −1 and the specific capacitance retention of about 93% after 5000 cycles. The results demonstrate that CoP@NF with special nanoprism arrays is a promising potential candidate as the electrode material of supercapacitors and other energy-storing applications.

Callistemon-like Zn and S codoped CoP nanorod clusters as highly efficient electrocatalysts for neutral-pH overall water splitting

Liang Yan,Bing Zhang,Junlu Zhu,Zhonggang Liu,Haiyan Zhang,Yunyong Li

Exploring highly efficient and cost-effective electrocatalysts has become imperative for neutral-pH water splitting, which is environmentally friendly and can reduce the cost of electrolysis systems. Here, we report an effective strategy to design a novel type of callistemon-like Zn and S codoped CoP nanorod clusters by introducing both Zn and S into cobalt phosphide, thereby creating electrocatalysts for highly efficient and stable neutral water splitting. The best Zn and S codoped CoP nanorod clusters on carbon paper (Zn,S–CoP NRCs/CP) require overpotential values of 67 and 391 mV for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at 10 mA cm−2 in 1.0 M phosphate-buffered solution, respectively. Remarkably, this enables a neutral electrolyzer to deliver 10 mA cm−2 at a low cell voltage of 1.70 V, which is superior to those afforded by the Pt/C/CP‖IrO2/CP couple and most of the state-of-the-art electrocatalysts. Impressively, this electrolyzer can be powered by an AA battery (∼1.5 V). Density functional theory computations and systematic experiments have verified that the improved HER and OER activities originate from the optimized electronic structures that can facilitate the adsorption and desorption of hydrogen intermediates after introducing Zn and S and accelerating the formation of oxygenated intermediates on CoOOH, respectively. This work provides a new strategy to boost the performance of transition metal phosphides for neutral water or seawater splitting.

N, P-co-doped carbon coupled with CoP as superior electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction and overall water splitting

Zequn Chen,Hongfu Jia,Jingrun Yuan,Xi Liu,Chaohe Fang,Yunying Fan,Chuanbao Cao,Zhuo Chen

To achieve high activity and stability for both hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions through the non-precious-metal based electrocatalysts is still facing the great challenge. Herein, we demonstrate a facile strategy to prepare CoP nanoparticles (NPs) loaded on N, P dual-doped carbon (NPC) electrocatalysts with high concentration N and P dopants through a pyrolysis-deposition-phosphidation process. The great bifunctional electrocatalytic activity for both HER (the overpotential of 98 mV and 86 mV at 10 mA cm −2 in both 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 and 1 M KOH electrolytes, respectively) and OER (the overpotential of 300 mV at 10  mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH electrolyte) were achieved. When CoP@NPC hybrid was used as two electrodes in the 1 M KOH electrolyte system for overall water splitting, the needed cell potential for achieving the current density of 10 mA cm −2 is 1.6 V, and it also showed superior stability for HER and OER after 10 h’ test with almost negligible decay. Experimental results revealed that the P atoms in CoP were the active sites for HER and the CoP@NPC hybrid showed excellent bifunctional electrocatalytic properties due to the synergistic effects between the high catalytic activity of CoP NPs and NPC, in which the doping of N and P in carbon led to a stronger polarization between Co and P in CoP, promoting the charge transfer from Co to P in CoP, enhancing the catalytic activity of P sites and Co sites in CoP for HER and OER, respectively. Specifically, the improvements could result from the changed charge state, the increased active specific surface area, and the facilitated reaction kinetics by N, P co-doping and admixture. This work provides a high-efficient, low-cost and stable electrocatalyst for overall water splitting, and throws light on rational designing high performance electrocatalysts.

Construction of CoP/B doped g-C3N4 nanodots/g-C3N4 nanosheets ternary catalysts for enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen production performance

Huijie Li,Jingli Zhao,Yan Geng,Zhongjun Li,Yike Li,Jianshe Wang

CoP/g-C 3 N 4 , a kind of noble-metal-free binary photocatalyst , has been demonstrated to be active for water splitting. However, high recombination rate of charge carriers is still one of the biggest factors to restrict the photoactivity of CoP/g-C 3 N 4 . In this paper, Boron doped g-C 3 N 4 nanodots (BCNDs) were introduced to CoP/g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets (CoP/CNNS) and a novel CoP/BCNDs/CNNS ternary photocatalyst was constructed. Experimental characterization and testing results indicate that BCNDs/CNNS heterojunction was formed in CoP/BCNDs/CNNS ternary photocatalyst. Comparing with CoP/g-C 3 N 4 , CoP/BCNDs/CNNS facilitates electron-hole separation, and the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate can reach 1332.81 μmolg −1 ·h −1 , which is approximately 9.7 times as high as CoP/CNNS. It owns an apparent quantum efficiency of 10.78% at 420 nm. This work would provide a novel strategy to construct high activity g-C 3 N 4 based catalyst without noble metals.
