Preparation of a novel two-dimensional carbon material and enhancing Cu(II) ions removal by phytic acid

Wang Jing,Wen Xin,Yang Fan,Cao Zhanfang,Wang Shuai,Zhong Hong

A novel two-dimensional carbon material using phytic acid-functionalized graphene oxide was successfully synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method. Properties of the material were characterized by SEM, FT-IR, FITR-Rama and BET. Some factors like contact time, pH, and temperature were studied to investigate the adsorption characteristics on Cu(II) ions of the material. Experiment results showed that the material can reach equilibrium adsorption in 20 min and get maximum adsorption capacity (316.586 mg g) under the condition of pH 4.0, 304 K. The adsorption of Cu(II) ions was an exothermic and spontaneous process, and could be better simulated by the pseudo-second-order kinetics and Freundlich isotherm model.

Successive grafting of poly(hydroxyethyl methacrylate) brushes and melamine onto chitosan microspheres for effective Cu(II) uptake

Shaojun Yuan,Ping Zhang,Zhenyi Yang,Li Lv,Shengwei Tang,Bin Liang

Cross-linked chitosan (CCS) microspheres tethered with melamine-conjugated poly(hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) brushes were synthesized by combination of surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of HEMA and subsequent covalent immobilization of melamine onto the chain ends of PHEMA brushes. The as-synthesized CCS microsphere was used as a novel adsorbent for effective uptake of Cu(II) ions from aqueous solution. Success in each functionalization step was ascertained by SEM, ATR-FTIR and XPS characterization. Batch adsorption experimental results demonstrated that the adsorption equilibrium of Cu(II) ions on the melamine-grafted CCS microsphere was rapidly established within 20 min, and the adsorption process was found to be governed by intra-particle diffusion and chemisorption processes. The Langmuir-fitted maximum adsorption capacity of Cu(II) ions on the as-synthesized CCS microspheres was as high as circa 4.67 mmol L −1 (299 mg g −1 ). The calculated thermodynamic parameters revealed an endothermic and spontaneous adsorption process of Cu(II) ions on the melamine-grafted CCS microspheres. XPS spectra revealed that the adsorption mechanism was attributed to coordination (or chelation) interactions between amino (or hydroxyl) groups with cationic Cu(II) ions.

Biosorbent derived from plant tannin for selective removal of Cu(II) from aqueous solutions at low concentration

Qi Wenqian,Deng Bo,Mao Hui

Despite the low levels of copper ions in aquatic environments, excessive concentrations of copper ions can eventually cause serious harm to animals and humans as they are biologically enriched and ecologically cycled. Herein, an appropriate and selective separating material for copper ions with low concentrations needs to be developed. In the present work, bayberry tannin-modified chitosan fibres (TMF) were fabricated for selective removal of Cu 2+ . The adjacent phenolic hydroxyl groups at the B ring of tannin enable them to chelate with heavy metal ions, while the fibre structure of chitosan is conducive to the extended distribution of the active sites. It showed an adsorption capacity of 14.98 mg g –1 for Cu 2+ at 303 K, which was higher than that of most conventional adsorbents and activated carbon. Moreover, in the presence of co-existing heavy metal ions, including Ni 2+ , Cd 2+ , Fe 3+ and Cr 3+ , we found that TMF showed highly selective adsorption of Cu 2+ , with Cu 2+ concentrations as low as 5 mg l –1 . The TMF can be robustly recycled through acid treatment with 96.6% desorption efficiency.

Preparation and photocatalytic activity of composite metal oxides derived from Salen-Cu(II) intercalated layered double hydroxides

Meng Yue,Xia Shengjie,Pan Guoxiang,Xue Jilong,Jiang Junhui,Ni Zheming

Copper(II) Schiff-base Complexes (Salen-Cu(II)) intercalated zinc-chromium layered double hydroxides (ZnSBCuCr-LDHs) were successfully prepared via coprecipitation. Then, a novel photocatalytic material Zn-Cu-Cr composite oxides (ZnSBCuCr-MO) was prepared after calcination at 500 °C with ZnSBCuCr-LDHs as precursor. The structure and properties of the materials were thoroughly characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES), ultraviolet visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-Vis DRS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The photocatalytic activities of the materials were investigated by photodegradation of a cationic dye Rhodamin B (RhB), which was hard to adsorb by LDHs. The effects of the photocatalyst dosage, the initial pH and temperature of RhB solution on the photocatalytic efficiency were discussed. The results showed that ZnSBCuCr-MO displayed higher photocatalytic activity for RhB than calcined ZnCr-LDHs (ZnCr-MO) and calcined ZnCuCr-LDHs (ZnCuCr-MO). Meanwhile, ZnSBCuCr-MO exhibited better stability and reusability. In addition, the possible photocatalytic mechanism and degradation pathway for RhB were studied through density functional theory (DFT) calculation of the RhB molecule, UV-vis absorption variation and LC-MS analyses of the RhB solution.

Enhanced adsorption of Cu(II) ions on chitosan microspheres functionalized with polyethylenimine-conjugated poly(glycidyl methacrylate) brushes

Li Lv,Jing Zhang,Shaojun Yuan,Liqiang Huang,Shengwei Tang,Bin Liang,Simo O. Pehkonen

To enhance the adsorption capacity of crosslinked chitosan (CCS) microspheres towards Cu(II) ions, well-defined poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA) brushes were grafted onto the surfaces of CCS microspheres via surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) for subsequent conjugation of polyethylenimine (PEI). The resultant PEI-grafted CCS (defined as CCS-g-PGMA-c-PEI) microsphere was used as an effective adsorbent to uptake Cu(II) ions from aqueous solution. Success in each functionalization step was ascertained by ATR-FTIR, XPS, SEM and water contact angle measurements. Batch adsorption experiments were performed to determine adsorption kinetics, adsorption isotherms and thermodynamics of Cu(II) ions on the CCS-g-PGMA-c-PEI microspheres. The adsorption equilibrium of Cu(II) ions on the microspheres was found to be rapidly established within 60 min at an optimal solution pH of 5.0, and the adsorption kinetics was well represented by the pseudo-second-order model, together with a significant effect of mass transfer on the Cu(II) adsorption rate. The Langmuir-fitted maximum adsorption capacity was about 3.58 mmol g−1 (229 mg g−1), and the calculated thermodynamic parameters demonstrated an endothermic and spontaneous adsorption process of Cu(II) ions. The PEI-grafted CCS microspheres also exhibited good regenerability and stability for recycle applications. The postulated adsorption mechanism was proposed to account for the adsorption process of Cu(II) ions on the CCS-g-PGMA-c-PEI microspheres.

A new porous magnetic chitosan modified by melamine for fast and efficient adsorption of Cu(II) ions

Zhan-Chao Wu,Zhao-Zhan Wang,Jie Liu,Jin-Hua Yin,Shao-Ping Kuang

A new porous magnetic chitosan modified by melamine (MA-CS/Fe 3 O 4 ) was synthesized. The compositions and surface topographies were characterized by infrared (IR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, thermogravimetric (TG) analysis and scanning electron microscope (SEM), respectively. The results of adsorption kinetics showed the adsorption behavior could be better described by the pseudo-second-order equation ( R   >   0.999). The adsorption isotherm was well fitted by the Langmuir equation ( R   >   0.999), and the values of separation factors were in the range of 0–1.0. The maximum adsorption capacity for Cu(II) was 2.58   mmol   g −1 at the optimal experimental conditions, which were pH   =   5.5, t   =   25   min, C 0   =   5.0   mmol   L −1 . The rate-controlling step was supposed to be chemical adsorption rather than mass transport. The adsorbent still exhibited high adsorption capacity after five regeneration cycles. The adsorption mechanism was due to coordination between Cu(II) and N atoms.

Fe3O4@SiO2@CS-TETA functionalized graphene oxide for the adsorption of methylene blue (MB) and Cu(II)

Fan Wang,Lijuan Zhang,Yeying Wang,Xijian Liu,Sohrab Rohani,Jie Lu

The graphene oxide (GO) functionalized by Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @CS-TETA nanoparticles, Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @CS-TETA-GO, was firstly fabricated in a mild way as a novel adsorbent for the removal of Cu(II) ions and methylene blue (MB) from aqueous solutions. The magnetic composites showed a good dispersity in water and can be conveniently collected for reuse through magnetic separation due to its excellent magnetism. When the Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @CS- TETA-GO was used as an absorbent for the absorption of MB and Cu(II), the adsorption kinetics and isotherms data well fitted the pseudo-second-order model and the Langmuir model, respectively. Under the optimized pH and initial concentration, the maximum adsorption capacity was about 529.1   mg   g −1 for MB in 20   min and 324.7   mg   g −1 for Cu(II) in 16   min, respectively, exhibiting a better adsorption performance than other GO-based adsorbents reported recently. More importantly, the synthesized adsorbent could be effectively regenerated and repeatedly utilized without significant capacity loss after six times cycles. All the results demonstrated that Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @CS-TETA-GO could be used as an excellent adsorbent for the adsorption of Cu(II) and MB in many fields.

Plasma polyacrylic acid and hollow TiO2 spheres modified with rhodamine B for sensitive electrochemical sensing Cu(II)

Zhihong Zhang,Hongfei Ji,Shuai Zhang,Donglai Peng,Qixuan Fu,Minghua Wang,Linghao He,Lingyu Yue

We report a novel nanocomposite of hollow TiO2 microspheres and plasma polyacrylic acid (TiO2@PPAA) modified with rhodamine B (TiO2@PPAA-RhB). This nanocomposite was further used as an electrochemical sensor for the ultra-sensitive and selective detection of Cu2+ in water. A gold electrode was modified with hollow TiO2 nanospheres, followed by the closely bonded layer of PPAA via plasma polymerization. Subsequently, the carboxyl groups of TiO2@PPAA nanocomposites were activated to ester groups by N-hydroxysuccinimide/1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminoprolyl) carbodiimide hydrochloride. The resultant activated ester groups reacted with the amino groups on rhodamine to form the amide groups, leading to the modification of TiO2@PPAA nanocomposites with rhodamine. Considering the synergistic effect of strong electrostatic interaction between the carboxyl groups of PPAA and Cu2+, the direct adsorption of Cu2+ on the TiO2 surface, and the coordination chemistry formed between Cu2+ and rhodamine, the developed electrochemical biosensor exhibited high sensitivity of Cu2+ detection, with a detection limit of 0.404 pM within the range of 0.001–10 nM of Cu2+. Therefore, the fabricated electrochemical sensor based on TiO2@PPAA-RhB can be obtained via plasma polymerization and represents a highly promising tool for use in environmental monitoring.

Electrochemical investigation on the complexes of Cu(II), Mn(II), Ca(II), and Mg(II) with insulin

Zhijiang Rong,Wei Guo,Haotian Liang,Huan Lv,Hua Guo,Yi Zhang,Bo Zhang,Chunyan Hao,Xianjun Liu,Hongyan Sun,Yifan Gao

Biological metal ions play crucial roles in various life processes and exhibit diverse biological functions. Specifically, Ca(II), Mg(II), Cu(II), and Mn (II) ions are intricately involved in insulin function. To further clarify the biological functions of biological metal ions on insulin, the interaction mechanism of insulin affected by Ca(II), Mg(II), Cu(II), and Mn (II) ions were comparably investigated via spectroscopic, circular dichroism(CD), and electrochemical approaches. Electrochemical studies demonstrate that Mn(II) forms an M 2 L-type complex with insulin, exhibiting a binding constant of β Mn = 9.3 × 10 9 , while Cu(II) and insulin form an M 4 L-type complex with a significantly higher binding constant of β Cu =9.18 × 10 12 . Electrochemical investigation of the interaction between Ca(II) and Mg(II) with insulin adsorbed onto a glass carbon electrode surface revealed that the presence of Ca(II) and Mg(II) induced conformational changes in insulin, resulting in reduced adsorption capacity. Additionally, it was observed that the presence of Ca(II) and Mg(II) enhanced the redox signal of probe ions. The binding constants values were calculated to be 1.108 × 10 3 L•mol –1 for the insulin-Ca(II) system and 2.28 ×10 2 L• mol –1 for the insulin-Mg(II) system. Spectroscopic studies showed that the binding of Cu(II) ions to insulin molecules may be controlled by chelation mechanism, and the interaction between Cu(II) ions and insulin molecules may occur in the aromatic region. Mn(II) ion binding is mainly controlled by ionic interactions, and its binding site is far away from the aromatic region. The combination of Ca(II) and Mg(II) with insulin induced a small enhancement in the Ultraviolet-visible (UV) absorption peak, with Ca(II) exhibiting a more pronounced effect compared to Mg(II). The results of spectral, CD and electrochemical studies are consistent.

Jie Song,Lijun Chen,Yingnan Zhou,Zhiwen Yuan,Yuhua Niu,Zhiqiang Wei

With the rapid development of industrialization, the removal of heavy metal ions and small organic molecules from wastewater has triggered a hot debate. ZIF-8 was grown on a sodium alginate backbone using an in situ growth technique, the core-shell P-SMG@ZIF-8 was synthesized. It was also characterized by FTIR, XRD, SEM, UV–Vis and XPS, and the optimal conditions and mechanism of adsorption were explored. At pH 2.0, a contact time of 200 min, and 298 K, removal of Cu(II) and Ph up to 80.2 %, 65.6 % by P-SMG@ZIF-8, adsorption behavior consistent with Langmuir model for pseudo-secondary rates, the saturated adsorption of Cu(II) and Ph could reach up to 83.5812 mg/g and 78.1779 mg/g, respectively. And the adsorbed P-SMG@ZIF-8 is easy to separate and reusable, which is a cost-effective and efficient natural product-based adsorption material.

Flame-Retardant and Antibacterial Waterborne Polyurethane Composites Based on a Cu(II)–Phytate–Aromatic Schiff Base Complex

Jiayi Gan,Jie Zhou,Yusong Xu,Tao Zhang,Xianming Zhang

Waterborne polyurethane (WPU) has promising application prospects in paints and coatings owing to its low volatile organic compounds (VOCs), excellent abrasion resistance, and mechanical properties. However, WPU is highly flammable, and there is a high demand for its antibacterial properties in practical applications. To date, effectively suppressing melt dripping remains a challenge during combustion and imparts a high antibacterial property to WPU without compromising the inherent mechanical property. Herein, we report WPU composites on the basis of a Cu(II)–phytate–aromatic Schiff base complex prepared from an aromatic Schiff base derivative, copper(II) acetate, and green and renewable phytic acid. The resultant WPU composites achieved a limiting oxygen index (LOI) of 27.5%. In the UL-94 test, they achieve a UL-94 V-0 rating with no molten droplets and self-extinguish within 1 s after the first and second flame applications. Meanwhile, smoke emission is effectively inhibited in the cone calorimetry test. Moreover, the WPU composites exhibit a killing rate of 99.9% against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli and excellent tensile toughness, providing a useful reference for designing and fabricating flame-retardant and antibacterial WPU composites.

Synthesis of Cu(II)-loaded polydopamine to construct fluorescence sensor for detection of cTnI from myocardial infarction

Linling Zhong,Fanpeng Gong,Jing Li,Guizhu Liu,Xin Wen,Fan Yu,Changjun Hou,Sen Yang,Fangyong Zhu,Xianfeng Wang

High-performance detection of cTnI possesses great significance for diagnosis of myocardial infarction. In this work, two kinds of lower-dimensional Cu(II)-loaded polydopamines were synthesized via in-situ polymerization of dopamine for the first time using Cu-pBDC MOFs and Cu-aBDC MOFs as templates. The obtained Cu-ppDA nanosheets and Cu-apDA nanoribbons maintain the original structure of MOFs and exhibit the advantages of large specific surface area and metal coordination effect, which efficiently enhances the adsorption of single-stranded aptamer DNA probe via π–π stacking. Energy transfer from FAM-Apt probe to Cu(II)-loaded pDA occurred, resulting in the fluoresce quenching. The inference of target cTnI assembles with FAM-Apt probe and the releases from FAM-Apt/Cu-ppDA or FAM-Apt/Cu-apDA systems, leading to the fluorescence recovery. This approach enables a simple, rapid, sensitive, and specific detection method for cTnI. By contrast, FAM-Apt/Cu-ppDA system shows a lower LOD than that of FAM-Apt/Cu-apDA. Furthermore, the successful implementation of these two fluorescent sensors for the detection of cTnI in serum samples obtained from mice with myocardial infarction has been demonstrated. The outcomes of this detection aligned with those achieved through the ELISA method, suggesting their promising potential for practical application in early screening for myocardial infarction.
