A novel europium metal-organic frameworks (Eu-MOFs), based on 1,3,5-benzotricarboxylic acid (H 3 BTC), 4,4′-azopyridine (4,4′-AZ) and N , N -dimethyllformamide (DMF), was synthesized by the solvothermal method . The crystal structure, thermal stability, morphology and luminescent properties are characterized by the X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetry (TG), scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and optical spectroscopic techniques. The Eu-MOFs display a unique luminescence quenching effect to nitrobenzene (NB) and copper (Cu 2+ ) ions. The turn-off luminescence can be induced by 210 ppm NB or by 1000 μM Cu 2+ ions. Furthermore, the high sensitivities ( K SV = 0.039 ppm −1 for NB, and K SV =0.029 μM −1 for Cu 2+ ) and low detection limits (0.656 ppm for NB, and 1.395 μM for Cu 2+ ) are obtained. The sensing mechanisms are reasonably explained based on the electron and energy transfer. The experimental results show that the Eu-MOFs can be used as a potential sensing luminescence quenching probes for NB and Cu 2+ ions.

As eco-friendly adsorption material, hydroxyapatite (Ca 5 (PO 4 ) 3 OH, HA) has been extensively applied to the removal of heavy metal ions. However, separating and recovering of HA powder after the adsorption process limits their application. Alginate-based composite beads (HCA) encapsulated with HA and cellulose were designed to remove Cu(II) from aqueous solution. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used for characteristic analysis. An extensive discussion in terms of HCA adsorption capacity, effect of various Cu(II) concentration, and analysis of the involved mechanisms of Cu(II) removal on the biosorption. HCA beads showed that the maximum adsorption capacity for Cu(II) of 64.14 mg/g at pH = 5 with 8 h contact time. The Langmuir adsorption isotherm and second-order kinetic model gave the closest fit. HCA beads display good regeneration ability after four cycles and offer potentiality for practical application.

Improving charge transport properties between the quantum dots (QDs) and reducing the non-radiative recombination have been attempted on silver bismuth iodide (Ag2BiI5) perovskite QDs using oleylamine–sulfide passivation. Herein, we have prepared Ag2BiI5 silver bismuth iodide QDs via a simple ligand-assisted reprecipitation method, and the samples were passivated with the oleylamine–sulfide complex. The absorption and emission profiles were red-shifted, which implies that the overall size of the QDs has increased after the passivation. An increase in the emission intensity confirmed the reduction of non-radiative recombination and an increase in excited-state carrier lifetime, as observed from the time-correlated single-photon counting-lifetime measurements. Further, the photocurrent devices were fabricated and generated high-magnitude photocurrent values in the ranges of ∼1.1 to 1.8 μA (bare Ag2BiI5) and ∼0.27 to 0.54 μA (oleylamine–sulfide-passivated Ag2BiI5) for the biasing voltages of 0.1 and 0.2 V, respectively. Surprisingly, the oleylamine–sulfide-passivated Ag2BiI5 sample exhibited a sharp rise in the photocurrent value with a high on/off ratio. In addition, the bare and oleylamine–sulfide-passivated QDs were further applied for the fluorescence detection of copper Cu(II) ions in drinking water samples for the first time.

Abstract The pore structure of the regenerated cellulose hydrogel was used as a microreactor for generating magnetic MnFe 2 O 4 nanoparticles via in situ co-precipitation technology. Sodium periodate and sodium chlorite were used as oxidants, and the carboxyl modification of magnetic cellulose aerogels was achieved through a two-step oxidation reaction. The method used was convenient and environmental-friendly, and the raw materials were also green and non-toxic. The addition of magnetic nanoparticles promoted the adsorption and enabled the recycling of materials. The results showed that the adsorption equilibrium time was only 120 min and adsorption capacity could be increased by increasing the adsorption temperature. The maximum adsorption capacity of Cu(II) was 73.70 mg/g at 25 °C when the initial concentration of solution was150 mg/L. The adsorption behaviour towards Cu(II) followed the pseudo-secondary reaction kinetics and the Langmuir isotherm adsorption model. According to the results of XPS, carboxyl and hydroxyl groups were the main active adsorption sites for Cu(II). Moreover, all the composite aerogels exhibited good reusability and could be easily separated from the water after adsorption. Waste biomass can be recycled to prepare biochar for soil restoration, in which process soil fertility would not be lost. In this work, biochar was prepared from waste pomelo peel, combined with ZnO, to be used to immobilize Cu(II) in contaminated soil, whose maximum adsorption capacity was up to 216.37 mg g −1 . Due to combination of ZnO, the BET surface area of biochar increased from 2.39 to 18.53 m 2 g −1 . Meanwhile, the surface functional groups increased, which was conducive to fixation of metal ion on the surface of biochar. Both pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir isotherm model fit the experimental data well. Adsorption was easy to happen since the adsorption site on the surface of biochar/ZnO had a strong affinity with Cu(II). In addition, mechanism investigation indicated that Cu(II) was bond with biochar/ZnO mainly by non-bioavailable state (75.6%) primarily. It inferred that biochar/ZnO was an efficient and promising passivator in reducing heavy metal risk in soil.

A novel two-dimensional carbon material using phytic acid-functionalized graphene oxide was successfully synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method. Properties of the material were characterized by SEM, FT-IR, FITR-Rama and BET. Some factors like contact time, pH, and temperature were studied to investigate the adsorption characteristics on Cu(II) ions of the material. Experiment results showed that the material can reach equilibrium adsorption in 20 min and get maximum adsorption capacity (316.586 mg g) under the condition of pH 4.0, 304 K. The adsorption of Cu(II) ions was an exothermic and spontaneous process, and could be better simulated by the pseudo-second-order kinetics and Freundlich isotherm model.

The pollution of water resources has become a worldwide concern. The primary pollutants including insoluble oil, toxic dyes, and heavy metal ions. Herein, we report a polymer adsorbent, named SPCT, to remove the above three contaminants from water simultaneously. The preparation process of SPCT contains two steps. Firstly, a hydrogel composed of sulfonated phenolic resin (SMP) and polyethyleneimine (PEI) was synthesized using glutaraldehyde (GA) as the crosslinking agent, and the product was named SPG. Then SPCT was prepared by the reaction between SPG and citric acid (CA) at 170 °C. SPCT exhibited an excellent performance for the removal of methylene blue (MB) and Cu(II) from aqueous solution. For a solution with a pollutant concentration of 50 mg L−1, a removal efficiency of above 90% could be obtained with a SPCT dosage of 0.2 g L−1for MB, or a SPCT dosage of 0.5 g L−1for Cu(II), respectively. SPCT also presented an interesting wettability. In air, it was both superhydrophilic and superoleophilic, and it was superoleophobic underwater. Therefore, SPCT could successfully separate oil-in-water emulsion with high separation efficiency and resistance to oil fouling. Additionally, SPCT was easily regenerated by using dilute HCl solution as an eluent. The outstanding performance of SPCT and the efficient, cost-effective preparation process highlight its potential for practical applications. Keywords:wastewater treatment;adsorption;emulsion separation;thermal crosslinking;superhydrophilicity

We report a novel nanocomposite of hollow TiO2 microspheres and plasma polyacrylic acid (TiO2@PPAA) modified with rhodamine B (TiO2@PPAA-RhB). This nanocomposite was further used as an electrochemical sensor for the ultra-sensitive and selective detection of Cu2+ in water. A gold electrode was modified with hollow TiO2 nanospheres, followed by the closely bonded layer of PPAA via plasma polymerization. Subsequently, the carboxyl groups of TiO2@PPAA nanocomposites were activated to ester groups by N-hydroxysuccinimide/1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminoprolyl) carbodiimide hydrochloride. The resultant activated ester groups reacted with the amino groups on rhodamine to form the amide groups, leading to the modification of TiO2@PPAA nanocomposites with rhodamine. Considering the synergistic effect of strong electrostatic interaction between the carboxyl groups of PPAA and Cu2+, the direct adsorption of Cu2+ on the TiO2 surface, and the coordination chemistry formed between Cu2+ and rhodamine, the developed electrochemical biosensor exhibited high sensitivity of Cu2+ detection, with a detection limit of 0.404 pM within the range of 0.001–10 nM of Cu2+. Therefore, the fabricated electrochemical sensor based on TiO2@PPAA-RhB can be obtained via plasma polymerization and represents a highly promising tool for use in environmental monitoring.

A new porous magnetic chitosan modified by melamine (MA-CS/Fe 3 O 4 ) was synthesized. The compositions and surface topographies were characterized by infrared (IR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, thermogravimetric (TG) analysis and scanning electron microscope (SEM), respectively. The results of adsorption kinetics showed the adsorption behavior could be better described by the pseudo-second-order equation ( R > 0.999). The adsorption isotherm was well fitted by the Langmuir equation ( R > 0.999), and the values of separation factors were in the range of 0–1.0. The maximum adsorption capacity for Cu(II) was 2.58 mmol g −1 at the optimal experimental conditions, which were pH = 5.5, t = 25 min, C 0 = 5.0 mmol L −1 . The rate-controlling step was supposed to be chemical adsorption rather than mass transport. The adsorbent still exhibited high adsorption capacity after five regeneration cycles. The adsorption mechanism was due to coordination between Cu(II) and N atoms.

Copper(II) Schiff-base Complexes (Salen-Cu(II)) intercalated zinc-chromium layered double hydroxides (ZnSBCuCr-LDHs) were successfully prepared via coprecipitation. Then, a novel photocatalytic material Zn-Cu-Cr composite oxides (ZnSBCuCr-MO) was prepared after calcination at 500 °C with ZnSBCuCr-LDHs as precursor. The structure and properties of the materials were thoroughly characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES), ultraviolet visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-Vis DRS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The photocatalytic activities of the materials were investigated by photodegradation of a cationic dye Rhodamin B (RhB), which was hard to adsorb by LDHs. The effects of the photocatalyst dosage, the initial pH and temperature of RhB solution on the photocatalytic efficiency were discussed. The results showed that ZnSBCuCr-MO displayed higher photocatalytic activity for RhB than calcined ZnCr-LDHs (ZnCr-MO) and calcined ZnCuCr-LDHs (ZnCuCr-MO). Meanwhile, ZnSBCuCr-MO exhibited better stability and reusability. In addition, the possible photocatalytic mechanism and degradation pathway for RhB were studied through density functional theory (DFT) calculation of the RhB molecule, UV-vis absorption variation and LC-MS analyses of the RhB solution.

To enhance the adsorption capacity of crosslinked chitosan (CCS) microspheres towards Cu(II) ions, well-defined poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA) brushes were grafted onto the surfaces of CCS microspheres via surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) for subsequent conjugation of polyethylenimine (PEI). The resultant PEI-grafted CCS (defined as CCS-g-PGMA-c-PEI) microsphere was used as an effective adsorbent to uptake Cu(II) ions from aqueous solution. Success in each functionalization step was ascertained by ATR-FTIR, XPS, SEM and water contact angle measurements. Batch adsorption experiments were performed to determine adsorption kinetics, adsorption isotherms and thermodynamics of Cu(II) ions on the CCS-g-PGMA-c-PEI microspheres. The adsorption equilibrium of Cu(II) ions on the microspheres was found to be rapidly established within 60 min at an optimal solution pH of 5.0, and the adsorption kinetics was well represented by the pseudo-second-order model, together with a significant effect of mass transfer on the Cu(II) adsorption rate. The Langmuir-fitted maximum adsorption capacity was about 3.58 mmol g−1 (229 mg g−1), and the calculated thermodynamic parameters demonstrated an endothermic and spontaneous adsorption process of Cu(II) ions. The PEI-grafted CCS microspheres also exhibited good regenerability and stability for recycle applications. The postulated adsorption mechanism was proposed to account for the adsorption process of Cu(II) ions on the CCS-g-PGMA-c-PEI microspheres.

The graphene oxide (GO) functionalized by Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @CS-TETA nanoparticles, Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @CS-TETA-GO, was firstly fabricated in a mild way as a novel adsorbent for the removal of Cu(II) ions and methylene blue (MB) from aqueous solutions. The magnetic composites showed a good dispersity in water and can be conveniently collected for reuse through magnetic separation due to its excellent magnetism. When the Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @CS- TETA-GO was used as an absorbent for the absorption of MB and Cu(II), the adsorption kinetics and isotherms data well fitted the pseudo-second-order model and the Langmuir model, respectively. Under the optimized pH and initial concentration, the maximum adsorption capacity was about 529.1 mg g −1 for MB in 20 min and 324.7 mg g −1 for Cu(II) in 16 min, respectively, exhibiting a better adsorption performance than other GO-based adsorbents reported recently. More importantly, the synthesized adsorbent could be effectively regenerated and repeatedly utilized without significant capacity loss after six times cycles. All the results demonstrated that Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @CS-TETA-GO could be used as an excellent adsorbent for the adsorption of Cu(II) and MB in many fields.
