New Cu 2 O@TiO 2 core-shell microspheres were successfully prepared for the first time in this paper. The XRD, N 2 adsorption-desorption, SEM, TEM, EDX and XPS characterizations were utilized to investigate the physical and chemical properties. The liquid phase oxidation of naphthalene was also carried out to test their catalytic performance. The characterization results indicating that the Cu 2 O microspheres were firstly formed by hydrothermal treatment and the rutile TiO 2 coating on the surface would be formed by the hydrolysis of tetrabutyl titanate. The Cu 2 O@TiO 2 - 5.0 catalyst with the molar ratio of copper to titanium species as high as 5.0 has the largest surface area and maximum pore volume resulting from the integrated microspheres with rougher surface thickness of about 6.3 nm, and it showed higher catalytic performance in the liquid phase oxidation of naphthalene. Naphthalene conversion of 43.2%, 1, 4-naphthoquinone selectivity of 26.7% and phthalic anhydride selectivity of 53.4% can be obtained, and it only slightly decreased even after repeated use for 5 times. The method would provide a valuable theoretic reference for the hindrance of Cu 2 O rapid deactivation and the industrial application of the naphthalene oxidation to produce high valuable chemicals.

The precise control architectures of Cu2O crystals are very crucial, which have a significant influence on their various performances. Herein, Cu2O crystals with diverse architectures were achieved via finely adjusting the concentration of NaOH. The intriguing results showed that the addition of specific amounts of OH− to the solution was crucial to tailor the morphology and size of the resulting microcrystals. We observed the evolution of the shapes of the Cu2O microcrystals, which change from a rhombic dodecahedron to spherical, octahedral-like and then to hexapod upon the increase in the NaOH concentration. Adjusting the volume of NaOH added provides a means to vary the particle size. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) may reveal that OH− ions serve as an efficient coordination agent selectively adsorbing onto different crystal faces of Cu2O crystals modifying the crystal energies, inducing the structure anisotropy on crystal growth. This work reveals that an effective and facile strategy has been developed for morphology-control of Cu2O crystals.

Dielectric nanoparticles are expected to complement or even replace plasmonic nanoparticles in many optical and optoelectronic applications, because they exhibit small absorption losses and support strong electric and magnetic resonances simultaneously. Dielectric nanoparticles need to be deposited on various substrates in many applications. Understanding the substrate effect on the electromagnetic resonances of dielectric nanoparticles is of great importance for engineering their resonance properties and designing optical devices. In this study, moderate-refractive-index cuprous oxide nanospheres with uniform sizes and shapes are synthesized. The scattering spectra and images of the nanospheres deposited on three types of substrates are analyzed experimentally and theoretically. When supported on indium tin oxide–coated glass slides and Si wafers, the color of the nanospheres varies from blue, cyan, green, yellow, orange and red, covering almost the entire visible region. When deposited on gold films, the electromagnetic resonances of the nanospheres redshift intensively and a new effective magnetic resonance mode appears. The enhanced Raman scattering reveals that large electromagnetic field enhancements are produced in the gap region between the nanosphere and the substrate. The results shed light on the manipulation of the electromagnetic responses of dielectric nanoparticles and the design of dielectric metamaterials in the presence of various substrates.

The degradation of organic pollutants through photocatalysis is currently a major research focus. Core–shell heterostructures of metal semiconductors have been widely recognized as an effective strategy for enhancing photocatalytic performance, particularly when alloy nanoparticles are incorporated due to their unique electronic and catalytic properties. However, conventional synthetic approaches typically rely on high-temperature and high-pressure conditions, which often induce undesirable particle overgrowth and aggregation. Herein, AuPt bimetallic alloy nanoparticles were successfully fabricated via two successive in situ redox processes under room-temperature and ambient-pressure conditions, which were in situ integrated with Cu2O to form multilevel core–shell composite particles. Structurally, an octahedral Cu2O crystal serves as the inner core (denoted as Cu2O(O)), sequentially coated with a Cu2O nanoparticle (denoted as Cu2O(P)) interlayer and a AuPt alloy nanoparticle shell. Functionally, the enhanced photocatalytic activity of Cu2O(O)@Cu2O(P)@AuPt was proven to be attributed to a dual function of AuPt, which includes an adsorption-induced polarized interface and an efficient charge-transfer mediator with the ohmic contact. This work demonstrates a mild and versatile synthetic strategy for constructing semiconductor–alloy heterostructures, offering valuable insights into the rational design of highly efficient and stable photocatalysts.

In this study, Fe 3 O 4 @C@Cu 2 O was synthesized using a solvothermal method. The morphology and structural characteristics of the material were systematically investigated through various characterization techniques, including TEM, XPS, FT-IR, DLS, and VSM. Its antibacterial efficacy was assessed through colony counting. Results showed that at a concentration of 0.5 mg/mL, Fe 3 O 4 @C@Cu 2 O nanoparticles with a copper atomic percentage of 2.42% achieved bactericidal rates of 98.45% against E. coli and 90.58% against S. aureus . Compared to pure Fe 3 O 4 @C and Cu 2 O, the composite material demonstrated a 100% bactericidal rate against E. coli and 99.23% against S. aureus . Notably, after five cycles, the composite nanoparticles maintained effective bactericidal rates, with 82.16% against S. aureus and 94.72% against E. coli . SEM images of bacterial morphology and EPR tests confirmed that the antibacterial mechanism primarily involves the generation of reactive oxygen species(ROS).

Traditional optical communication using single narrow-band photodetectors (PDs) has poor confidentiality because all information and data are exposed to free space. With the development of science and technology, even the optical communication in the solar-blind ultraviolet (UV) band carries the risk of eavesdropping. Dual-band PDs have potential applications in secure and reliable optical communication through a combination of optical encryption and algorithmic encryption. In this paper, self-powered Cu2O/Ga2O3 heterojunction PDs with solar-blind UV-visible photodetection were fabricated. By adjusting the pH value of the Cu2O electrolyte, the crystallization quality and grain orientation of the Cu2O thin film were improved, and the interface transfer resistance of the heterojunctions was decreased. The Cu2O/Ga2O3 PDs fabricated in Cu2O electrolyte with a pH value of 9.5 demonstrated the optimized solar-blind UV-visible photoresponse characteristics. In the absence of applied bias, the device exhibited a responsivity of 0.12 mA W−1, a rise time of 2.48 ms and a fall time of 11.72 ms at 254 nm. The responsivity reaches 19 mA W−1 when illuminated at 475 nm, and the rise and fall times are 0.96 and 9.12 ms, respectively. Utilizing the excellent photoresponse characteristics of the solar-blind UV-visible band, the device was used to design and demonstrate a proof-of-concept optical communication system for secure data transmission. The proposed system features two independent light channels, utilizing solar-blind UV light as the information carrier and visible light for key transmission. By implementing specific algorithms, this design ensures safe and reliable communication.

Magnetically separable NiFe2O4/Cu2O composites were successfully synthesized by a two-step method. The samples were characterized by XRD, XPS, SEM and VSM as well as their PL spectra and UV–vis adsorption spectra. The results showed that the NiFe2O4/Cu2O composites were composed of cubic-structured Cu2O and spinel-structured NiFe2O4, were able to absorb a large amount of visible light, exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity under simulated solar light irradiation and could be easily separated by an external magnetic field. The NiFe2O4/Cu2O composites exhibited higher photocatalytic performance than that of a single semiconductor. It was found that the prominently enhanced photocatalytic performance of NiFe2O4/Cu2O composites was ascribed to the effective separation of photo-generated electron–hole pairs and the effective generation of the hydroxyl radical •OH.

Cuprous oxide (Cu 2 O) is a promising photocathode for photo-electrochemical hydrogen production. One of the main issues limiting the application of Cu 2 O is photo-corrosion in aqueous electrolyte during the PEC process. Herein, to improve the stability of Cu 2 O, for the first time, a soluble polymer polyimide (PI) was introduced as a protective layer using a facile spin-coating method. It was found that dense PI films effectively isolated Cu 2 O from the aqueous electrolyte and inhibited self-reduction and oxidation reactions of Cu 2 O as evidenced by XRD spectra. Compared with bare Cu 2 O, the photocurrent density and stability of modified Cu 2 O samples were increased with increasing the spin-coating amount of PI solutions. It was found that sample Cu 2 O/PI-200 showed the highest current density value of 1.8 mA/cm 2 at 0 V RHE after 1200 s without attenuation, which is 40 times higher than the bare Cu 2 O (0.04 mA/cm 2 at 0 V RHE ). Further enhancing the PI amount, such as sample Cu 2 O/PI-300, will lead to a very stable but lower current density (1.48 mA/cm 2 ) during the whole test duration. EIS measurements indicated that thicker PI films lead to larger charge transfer resistance and higher capacitance in the space charge layer. Therefore, there is an optimum amount of PI (Cu 2 O/PI-200) to balance the above two opposite effects and achieve the best PEC performance. This work provides a facile strategy to improve the PEC activity and stability of Cu 2 O, which may be extended to other systems with photo-corrosion problems, such as BiVO 4 or ZnO.

Micro/nanomotors have attracted extensive attentions in aquatic environmental remediation, but the random motion and uncontrollability restricts the precise location and timely adjustment in micro-environmental remediation, such as in microchannels and microwells. Herein, we demonstrated visible-light-driven cadmium sulfide quantum dots doped cuprous oxide (Cu 2 [email protected] ) micromotors adsorbent with excellent removability to cationic dye, in along with effective motion regulation. The Cu 2 [email protected] micromotors adsorbent with type II heterostructure was fabricated by simple in-situ deposition and exhibited outstanding motion controllability and instant response under visible light illumination. The existence of a staggered gap between Cu 2 O and CdSe formed a heterojunction, effectively inhibiting recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs and improving photocatalytic activity of Cu 2 [email protected] micromotors. Negative phototactic self-propulsion with maximum speed to ∼42.3 μm/s was achieved in biological environments because of the formation of the asymmetric chemical concentration gradient around the motors. Additionally, by modulating the direction and on/off state of asymmetric light field, it is capable of steering motor moving with multiple controllable modes, such as horizontal, vertical, stop/go and patterned propulsion, which will facilitate the on-demand orientation once in the complex microchannel. Furthermore, the capability of Cu 2 [email protected] micromotors adsorbent is confirmed with a rapid adsorption rate of 96% on methyl blue after 10 min. Additionally, the stability of micromotors is evaluated. Although with inevitable oxidation or photocorrosion for all Cu 2 O micromotor, the strong adsorption ability is promised with 5 times recycling in low concentration of dye solution. Such attractive micromachines with boosted motility and lower production cost hold a considerable promise for a complex environmental remediation.

In photocatalyst design, the rapid recombination of photo-generated electron–hole pairs in the bulk or on the surface of semiconductors is a major limiting factor in achieving high photocatalytic efficiency, which is a key scientific issue. Surface modification is used to change the surface properties of photocatalyst related to dark adsorption and photocatalytic efficiency. In this work, micro-sized CuO powder was surface modified by in situ-growing heterojunctions CuO/Cu 2 O and CuO/Cu 2 O/Cu when simply calcinating a mixture of CuO and urea, in which urea acted as a reducing agent. The phases, microstructure, composition, photogenerated carrier lifetime, dark adsorption rate, photodegradation rate, and surface charges of the as-modified powder were investigated. The surface modification was found to change the negative surface charge of micro-sized CuO to a positive one, resulting in enhanced dark adsorption (nearly twice that of pristine CuO). Furthermore, the surface modification prolonged the photogenerated carrier lifetime, which in turn enhanced the photocatalytic efficiency. Overall, this work implies that the electric properties of surface charges and carrier lifetime can be altered by constructing an appropriate heterojunction on the surface of the photocatalyst.

The direct propylene epoxidation with molecular oxygen offers an atom-economical route to propylene oxide (PO). However, the oxidative reaction conditions required at high temperatures often induce complete propylene oxidation and the reconstruction of the active centers, compromising PO selectivity. Herein, we propose a redispersion-confinement strategy to encapsulate small, low-valence Cu nanoparticles (NPs) within a silica shell, thereby achieving stable dispersion across various supports. We confirm that the formation of Cu-O-Si coordination between Cu and silica, together with cesium promotion, could stabilize the small Cu NPs and enhance the PO formation. The optimum Cs-Cu@Si/SBA-15 catalyst delivers a 3.9% propylene conversion and a 68% PO selectivity, markedly surpassing the 0.6% conversion and 42% selectivity obtained over Cs-Cu/SBA-15 without the silica shell. A significant space and chemical state confinement effect is evidenced between CuO and the silica shell, which retards the reactivity of lattice oxygen and allows the moderate activation of molecular oxygen to electrophilic oxygen species; thus, promoting the selective epoxidation of propylene. This strategy offers a general approach for molecular-level control of active-site structure and electronic states in heterogeneous catalysts.
