In view of recent advances in photodegradation of antibiotics, low cost and stable photocatalyst remain rare. In this article, shape-controlled Cu2O@CuS nanocubes with the larger specific surface area were successfully prepared via a simple template-engaged strategy. Cu2O nanocubes were synthesized through a reduction method as original templates, the core-shelled Cu2O@CuS nanocubes were formed by sulphuration with Na2S as sulphur source, and the Cu2O core can be incompletely removed by Na2S2O3 to generate the Cu2O@CuS nanoboxes. Herein, hierarchical nanoboxes with two-layered Cu2O@CuS were used as photocatalyst materials for photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline (TC). The obtained nanocubes manifested high specific surface area (39.65 m2 g−1) and large pore volume (12.3 cm3 g−1). The degradation performance for TC was investigated in detail, including the effect of parameters such as photocatalyst, pH and catalyst dosage. The results indicated that degradation efficiencies were higher than 90% under visible light. Moreover, the degradation efficiency was 71% after six times.

Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is one of the important half-reactions in energy conversion equipment such as water-spitting devices, rechargeable metal-air batteries, and so on. It is beneficial to develop efficient and low-cost catalysts that understand the reaction mechanism of OER and analyze the reconstruction phenomenon of transition metal sulfide. Interestingly, copper sulfide and cuprous sulfide with the same components possess different reconstruction behaviors due to their different metal ion valence states and different atomic arrangement modes. Because of a unique atomic arrangement sequence and certain cationic defects, the reconstruction phenomenon of CuS nanomaterials are that S 2− is firstly oxidized to SO 4 2− and then Cu x + is converted into CuO via Cu(OH) 2 . In addition, the specific “modified hourglass structure” of CuS with excellent conductivity is easier to produce intermediates. Compared with Cu 2 S, CuS exhibits excellent OER activity with a lower overpotential of 192 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and remarkable electrochemical stability in 1.0 m KOH for 120 h. Herein, this study elucidates the reconstruction modes of CuS and Cu 2 S in the OER process and reveals that CuS has a stronger Cu S bond and a faster electronic transmission efficiency due to “modified hourglass structure,” resulting in faster reconstruction of CuS than Cu 2 S.

Hydrogen production by electrochemical overall water splitting is an economic and green approach to resolve the looming energy and environmental crisis. However, the electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) generally occurs at low rate due to the delayed reaction kinetics of four-electron transfer. Herein, a kind of crater-like micro-nano structure CuS three-dimensional electrode that was supported on a Cu foam was prepared and used as an electrode anode for overall water splitting. The superhydrophilic/underwater superaerophobic structure can significantly reduce the bubble adhesion on the electrode surface and improve the OER performance. The CuS/CF electrode showed good wettability and superaerophobicity with an underwater contact angle of 153.5°. The CuS/CF (CuS/Cu foam) electrode has been proved to have excellent electrocatalytic activity for water decomposition. In 1.0 M KOH solution, the OER overpotential is 350 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and the Tafel slope is 83 mV dec −1 . In acidic medium of 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 solution, the overpotential of hydrogen evolution (HER) is 134 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and the Tafel slope is 114 mV dec −1 . The underwater superaerophobic electrode still has strong stability after 10 h test. This work provides a new potential electrochemical catalyzed approach to water decomposition by constructing a super-infiltration electrode.

Nanomaterials offer enhanced stability and functionality for photothermal agents; however, their efficacy is often limited by suboptimal cellular internalization and photothermal conversion efficiency. To address these challenges, we designed a multicomponent inorganic–organic hybrid photothermal agent that integrates a virus-mimicking morphology and stimuli-responsive components. Gold nanostars (GNS) were functionalized with a pH-responsive epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) polyphenol network, followed by in situ growth of CuS, yielding star-shaped GEC nanoassemblies with a rough surface. This biomimetic design leverages (i) the plasmonic photothermal properties of the GNS core, (ii) the acid-triggered disassembly of the EGCG network (mimicking viral protein shells), and (iii) the in situ synthesized CuS layer exhibiting a virus-mimetic rough surface and targeting capability, which enhances near-infrared light absorption and promotes endocytosis by the target cells. The synergistic integration of GNS and CuS significantly enhanced the photothermal conversion efficiency. Under tumor acidic conditions, the EGCG network disintegrated, leading to the shedding of the CuS shell and a reduction in overall size, which facilitated deep tissue penetration. Structural characterization confirmed the hierarchical architecture and pH-responsive size transition. Compared to unmodified GNS, the cellular uptake of GEC by 4T1 cells was approximately 4.5-fold higher, attributable to its virus-like rough surface, acid-responsive disintegration, and targeting ability. This work demonstrates a rational biomimetic strategy for engineering stimuli-responsive inorganic–organic hybrids with optimized photothermal performance through biomimetic component engineering.

Graphical The catalytic and photocatalytic performance of the Copper sulfide (CuS) products prepared by using different copper sources are respectively studied. The catalytic performance of the CuS sample prepared via CuCl 2 as copper source is the best, and when H 2 O 2 is added to form a photo-Fenton catalytic system, it has excellent degradation ability for MB in both dark and light irradiation environments. Copper sulfide (CuS) is a p-type semiconductor material with narrow band gap and easy to be excited by visible light, which makes it has broad application prospect in the field of organic pollutant treatment. This work provides some significant insights into the photo-Fenton catalytic performance of the CuS materials in the degradation of organic dye MB. Via changing the copper source, the catalytic and photocatalytic performances of the CuS products prepared by using different copper sources such as CuSO 4 , Cu(NO 3 ) 2 , CuCl 2 , Cu(C 2 H 3 O 2 ) 2 were studied. The results indicated that due to the difference of copper sources, the catalytic performance of the obtained CuS samples varied greatly. For example, the catalytic properties of the CuS specimens prepared via CuCl 2 and CuSO 4 were significantly better than those of the products prepared using Cu(C 2 H 3 O 2 ) 2 and Cu(NO 3 ) 2 . Meanwhile, the degradation performance of MB by the same CuS specimen is better in a light irradiation condition than in a dark environment. Specifically, the catalytic performance of the CuS sample prepared via CuCl 2 as copper source was the best, and when H 2 O 2 was added to form a photo-Fenton catalytic system, it has excellent degradation ability for MB in both dark and light irradiation environments.

Antibiotic resistance poses a major challenge to modern healthcare and requires innovative microbial control strategies. Here, we report a novel method for integrating aluminum-doped copper sulfide (CuS@Al) microspheres into polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) matrix by electrospinning to obtain multifunctional nanofiber membranes with both photothermal and photodynamic antimicrobial properties (PVA-CuS@Al). Based on the rational design of Al doping to form structural defects on CuS microspheres, the light absorption and reactive oxygen species (ROS) were significantly enhanced. Under near-infrared (NIR) irradiation (808 nm, 2.0 W/cm²), PVA-CuS@Al with 5 wt% CuS@Al achieved rapid temperature rise from 25 °C to 181 °C within 15 s, and complete inactivation of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus was achieved within 10 min by photothermal ablation. In addition, under simulated sunlight, the membrane effectively generates ROS, achieving 100 % bacterial inhibition through photodynamic effects. The performance of the material goes beyond previous studies by combining dual antibacterial mechanisms on a single platform, reducing the required additive concentration (3 wt% CuS@Al), while maintaining biocompatibility and blood compatibility. This work introduces the development strategy of a new generation of antibacterial wound dressing with high efficiency and low cytotoxicity.

Phase change materials (PCMs)-integrated solar-thermal-electric generators (STEGs) have emerged as a promising platform for sustainable solar energy harvesting, yet faces critical challenges including liquid phase instability, insufficient photothermal efficiency, and limited thermoelectric output. Herein, we engineered hierarchical photonic confinement through the assembly of plasmonic CuS nanoparticles, broadband-absorbing MoS 2 nanosheets, and porous bacterial cellulose (BC). In this tripartite architecture, BC matrix provides robust structural integrity and enhances heat transfer via its 3D interconnected nanoporous structure; MoS 2 nanosheets enable extended photon harvesting across the ultraviolet to near-infrared spectrum; CuS nanoparticles amplify near-field optical effects through localized surface plasmon resonance. The optimized composite PCMs achieve a remarkable photothermal conversion efficiency of 93.6 % under 100 mW/cm 2 , along with excellent latent heat retention close to 100 % after 10-day thermal cycles, attributed to the plasmon-phonon coupling between MoS 2 nanosheets and CuS nanoparticles. When integrated with thermoelectric devices, this STEG delivers a high and durable thermoelectric output of 157.0 mV and 44.0 mA under 100 m W/cm 2 irradiation, enabled by the photothermal-thermoelectric coupling effects. This innovative hierarchical photonic confinement design provides a universal platform for next-generation thermal management systems and self-powered photothermal technologies.

A novel reduced graphene oxide graphene-CdS/CuS nanoplate (G-CdS/CuS NP) was fabricated using a microwave method of loading CdS nanoplates onto graphene sheets (G-CdS NP) and subsequent cation exchange between G-CdS NP and Cu(NO3)2. The prepared G-CdS/CuS NP exhibited
excellent photocatalytic activity which was attributed to the synergy between graphene and CdS/CuS NP. The heterostructure in the CdS/CuS NP lead to an efficient charge transport across the interface. Graphene facilitated the transformation of electrons and reduced the recombination of electron–hole
pairs. These results provide a fabrication method for highly active photocatalysts and will lead to future rational design of photocatalytic materials.

Objective To develop a multifunctional strategy based on in-situ copper sulfide (CuS) nanoparticle deposition, aiming to simultaneously mitigate interface-confined water to improve adhesive infiltration, suppress enzymatic degradation, and prevent bacterial colonization. Methods Demineralized dentin matrices (DDM) were sequentially treated with CuSO₄ and Na₂S solutions at three concentrations (0.0015, 0.015, 0.15 mol/L), with conventional wet-bonding as a control. Nanoparticle distribution, matrix dehydration, matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) activity, antibacterial efficacy ( Streptococcus mutans , Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli ), and bonding performance (nanoleakage, microtensile bonding strength) were systematically evaluated. Results Uniform CuS deposition significantly reduced DDM hydration to release the interface-confined water. The 0.015 and 0.15 groups showed enhanced mechanical properties. Moreover, all concentrations of CuS deposition inhibited MMP and showed antibacterial effect. As a result, the 0.015 and 0.15 groups showed improved adhesive infiltration, reduced nanoleakage ( p < 0.05) and increased both immediate and aged microtensile bonding strength ( p < 0.01). Conclusion In-situ CuS nanoparticle deposition synergistically enhances bond durability, through DDM dehydration, MMP inhibition, and antibacterial action. This approach effectively minimizes hybrid layer defects and collectively prolongs bonding longevity. Clinical significance The Cu-assisted bonding technique provides a clinically feasible solution to address multifactorial failure modes in dentin bonding, leveraging nanomaterial synergy for durable adhesive restorations.

In this paper, a thin layer of high work function CuS was introduced to the interface between the anode and hole transporting layer (HTL) to modify the indium tin oxide (ITO) anode. Modified ITO substrates possess a higher work function, a lower sheet resistance and a negligible loss in transparency. More importantly, a thin layer of CuS can also benefit for the hole transporting of the device. Polymer solar cells (PSCs) utilizing modified ITO anodes exhibit a significant enhancement in power conversion efficiency ( PCE ) and air stability compared to devices with normal ITO anodes. This anode modification strategy applies to different active layer systems. Anode-modified devices with poly (3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PC 61 BM) as the active layer exhibit a PCE of 3.5%, while poly(4,8-bis(5-(2-ethyl-hexyl)-thiophene-2-yl)-benzo[l,2-b:4,5-b′] dithiophene-alt-alkylcarbonyl-thieno[3,4-b]thiophene) (PBDTTT-C-T) and [6,6]-phenyl-C71-butyric acid methyl ester (PC 71 BM) system shows a PCE of 7.4%. As a result, this work provides a good compatibility for modification of ITO by a thin layer of CuS in PSCs to achieve better performance.

Water soluble copper sulfide (CuS) nanoparticles were synthesized using l -cysteine as the ligand. Multiple biotins were conjugated to the antibody of rabbit IgG, and the streptavidin was attached to the CuS nanoparticles. The Cu 2+ ions enclosed in the nanoparticles were used as the electron spin resonance (ESR) probes and detected with ESR spectrometer. The immunoassay reaction was resulted in the formation of the coating antibody attached to the microplate well, the detecting antibody labeled with the biotins, and the streptavidin attached to the CuS nanoparticles. After the immunoassay reaction was performed, large amount of Cu 2+ /Cu + ions inside the nanoparticles were released with the help of diethyldithiocarbamate (DDC) and the Cu 2+ -DDC complex formed. The Cu 2+ -DDC complex was extracted into n -butanol, which was used as the analytical sample. Both ESR and UV–vis signals were collected for the analytical sample. The double logarithm standard curve was well simulated with a linear regression equation. The limits of detection of the rabbit IgG were 1.76 pg/mL and 2.36 pg/mL by ESR and UV–vis method, respectively. The detection range using ESR as the detector was from 8.8 pg/mL to 500 ng/mL, covering almost 5 magnitude orders of the rabbit IgG concentrations. The rabbit serum was analyzed and the rabbit IgG concentration was found to be 7.76 mg/mL. The reproducibility of the present method was good enough with the intra-assay error within 3.4 % and the inter-assay error within 11.2 %. The spiked serum samples were analyzed and the experimental results indicated that the recoveries were from 108.2 to 113.7%.

Promotion of the photoelectric (PE) response is of great importance for improving performances of solar cells, photocatalysis and photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensing. Herein, advanced CuO/Ag 2 S/CuS nanohybrids (NHs) are developed in which the CuO/Ag 2 S NHs have superior PE properties while the CuS nanoparticles own notable photothermal (PT) feature. Under illumination of 850 nm light, the CuO/Ag 2 S NHs are in-situ heated by the PT effect of CuS, which significantly facilitates carrier generation and migration, thus eventually increasing related PE response by 1.4 times with a PT contribution percentage of 34.3% to the total photocurrent. Based on this PT-promoted PE mechanism together with an enzymatic catalysis-induced Cu species regulation, a bio-friendly PEC sensing platform is established, realizing the sensitive determination of inorganic pyrophosphatase with a broad detection range from 0.05 to 35 mU ml −1 and a low detection limit of 0.02 mU ml −1 . In particular, further variable temperature tests show that this PT effect is even capable of shrinking the band gap of CuS (from ≈2.1 to ≈1.3 eV), expanding the wavelength range of adoptable excitation light, thereby being beneficial for biological applications. In comparison with other methods, promotion of PE response with PT effect has few restrictions on photoactive materials, and is therefore valuable to various PE-relevant applications.
