Metal-organic framework (MOF) fluorescent materials have significant advantages in detecting organic pollutants and metal ion pollution. A zinc metal organic framework nanofiber fluorescent membrane (Zn(Eu)-MOF@PAN NFM) was prepared by doping the lanthanide metal Eu using an electrospinning and impregnation process. The structure and morphology of the membrane was characterized by SEM, XRD, FT-IR and XPS. The results show that the membrane has good fluorescence performance and can successfully and efficiently detect nitrobenzene (NB; detection limit = 0.861 ppm, K sv = 0.143 ppm −1 ), 4-nitrophenol (4-NP; detection limit = 0.631 ppm, K sv = 0.178 ppm −1 ), benzaldehyde (BA; detection limit = 0.981 ppm, K sv = 0.051 ppm −1 ) and Fe 3+ ions (detection limit = 3.418 ppm, K sv = 3.210×10 −3 ppm −1 ) in solution. In terms of repeatability and stability, the test results are obviously better than the property of the powder.

With the increasing demand for on-site detection, the current approach of building dual-emission or multi-emission luminescence sensors based on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) which possess the capacity of self-reference for numerous non-analyte factors falls short of meeting sensing requirements. Therefore, we have designed a novel strategy for constructing wavelength shift-based luminescence sensor named Eu/Gd(TCPP), which exhibits dual-emitting from metal ions Eu 3+ and flexible rotating aggregation-induced emission (AIE) ligands H 4 TCPP (2,3,5,6-tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)pyrazine). This sensor was prepared by a simple, green and fast plasma synthesis method. It's worth noting that the fluorescence emission of Eu/Gd(TCPP) shows a specific wavelength shift from ligand peak, and a visual color change from red to blue within a pH range of 4 to 3. Moreover, various characterization data verified that the luminescence switching mechanism of Eu/Gd(TCPP) was attributed to the H + -induced collapse of the Eu/Gd(TCPP) crystal structure, followed by untwisting of free ligands that lose rigid MOFs confinement. This hindered the antenna effect from H 4 TCPP to Ln 3+ ions and restricted the rotation emission of ligand, resulting in the red-shifting of the ligand emission and corresponding luminescence switching. By tactfully utilizing the short-range pH response property of Eu/Gd(TCPP), highly sensitive and selective on-site visual detection of acidic aspartic acid can be achieved.

This paper introduces a novel composite bone cement (Eu:HAp/V-C 3 S), which is composed of carbonated tricalcium silicate (V-C 3 S) and europium-doped hydroxyapatite (Eu:HAp), and Eu:HAp was generated by hydrothermal synthesis . The physical and chemical properties, mineralization in vitro, biocompatibility and bacteriostasis of the composite bone cement were evaluated. The results show that the Eu:HAp/V-C 3 S composite bone cement has good setting properties and a relatively low pH value. The composite bone cement with 0.1 wt% Eu has a higher compressive strength than pure V-C 3 S (141.06% higher than pure V-C 3 S), which can greatly improve the mechanical properties of the materials. The in vitro immersion test shows that composite bone cement has good mineralization ability. The cell test proves that it has good cell proliferation ability and low cytotoxicity. In addition, the bacteriostatic experiment also verifies that composite bone cement has bacteriostatic effect to some degree. These results indicate that Eu:HAp/V-C 3 S composite bone cement is a promising biomedical material .

The creation of defects into luminescent MOFs allows for manipulation of fluorescent properties and thus leads to the enhanced detection performance for technological applications. Herein, a modulator-induced defect formation strategy was proposed to introduce missing-linker defect into lanthanide-based metal–organic framework (Eu@UiO-MOFs) and the enhanced detection properties was investigated. Notably, the missing-linker numbers in per Zr 6 cluster were calculated to facilitate comparison and quantitively interpretation. By elaborately tailoring defect numbers, the resultant Eu@UiO-MOFs-2 sensor with 0.53 missing linkers per Zr-O cluster showed a remarkably enhanced response slope and realized excellent trace detection under the range of 0–10 ppm with ultralow detection limit to 5.67 × 10 −7 M (114 ppb), acting as a powerful signal amplifier for trace detection of Cd 2+ . Moreover, the relationship between structural change and defect numbers of Eu@UiO-MOFs-X has been studied to understand the positive effect of the improved enrichment for the optical behavior. As far as we know, this is the first experimental demonstration of missing-linker defects in luminescent MOFs for regulation of optical sensing, offering a unique approach to explore innovative technologies for precisely detecting of heavy metal ion pollutants.

Nitroaromatic explosives pose a great threat to the environment and human safety. It is very important to design simple, highly efficient and multifunctional sensors for detecting nitroaromatic explosives. However, a few sensors can determine multicomponent nitroaromatic explosives simultaneously. Eu functionalized MOF-253 (Eu@MOF-253) hybrid material was synthesized using the post-synthetic modification method. The introduction of Eu3+ in MOF-253 caused the fluorescence peak of the ligand to show a distinct red-shift due to its polarization enhancement effect in the presence of 2,4-DNP. The emission and excitation spectra of the Eu@MOF-253 sensor showed overlap with the ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) absorption spectra of the representative nitroaromatic explosives 2,4-dinitrophenol (2,4-DNP) and 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP). Therefore, it is feasible to discriminate and quantify TNP and 2,4-DNP simultaneously. As proposed, the Eu@MOF-253 luminescent sensor was highly sensitive and selective towards TNP and 2,4-DNP. The other coexisting nitroaromatic explosives did not interfere with the determination. Upon addition of TNP, the fluorescence of the Eu@MOF-253 sensor decreased dramatically and showed an excellent quenching constant (Ksv) of 1.58 × 106. The fluorescence intensities of the Eu@MOF-253 sensor presented good linear relationships with concentrations of TNP and 2,4-DNP ranging from 0.01–100 μM and 0.01–25 μM, respectively. Low limits of detection (LOD) for both 2,4-DNP and TNP were approximately 10 nM. The determination mechanism is mainly ascribed to the internal filtration effect (IFE) and electron transfer. This work provides a practical method for the highly efficient determination of nitroaromatic explosives.

The development of a simple, rapid, and sensitive method for monitoring antibiotic residues is crucial for maintaining food safety. Herein, a ratiometric fluorescence probe based on bimetallic organic framework (Eu/Zr-MOF) was developed for the detection of tetracycline (TC). The Eu/Zr-MOF was synthesized by the coordination of Eu 3+ and Zr 4+ with 2-APDC, which exhibited a grape-like cluster morphology and dual-emitting fluorescence at 430 nm/616 nm. Based on the internal filtering effect (IFE), significant fluorescence quenching was observed at 430 nm, whereas only slight changes occurred at 616 nm. The ratiometric sensing offered two broad linear ranges (0.5–8 μg/mL; 10–60 μg/mL) and a low detection limit (26.7 ng/mL). The proposed method was applied to the determination of TC in pork and water samples. Fluorescent sensors have the advantages of simple design, fast response, and high sensitivity, thus providing a promising means for evaluating the safety of food contaminated with TC.

In this present work, a room temperature coprecipitation method for the synthesis of CaMoO 4 @SiO 2 :Ln (Eu 3+ , Tb 3+ , Dy 3+ ) phosphors was reported. These particles were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), Fourier Transform IR spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscope (SEM), UV-visible spectrophotometer and photoluminescence (PL) respectively. The results indicated that emission intensity of SiO 2 modified samples increased by about 2 times, compared with no-silica modified samples. Multicolor phosphors were also designed by changing the lattice activators (Eu 3+ , Tb 3+ , Dy 3+ ). To further explore its applications, the transparent photoluminescent film was developed through the incorporation of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), and selective and sensitive detection performance on dichromate was demonstrated in detail. In addition, red emission LED devices was assembled with as-prepared phosphors. The present results provide not only the high-performance phosphors modified by silica , but also a deep explanation of the structure-property relationship of the as-prepared sample. Based on these findings, it can be foreseen that these microparticles will be applied in versatile filed.

Modern agriculture needs multifunctional greenhouse films to meet different needs. A novel method for improving light converting properties and wettability of polyethylene film was developed in this paper. Glycerin monostearic acid itaconic acid diester (GI) with a carboxyl group and double band was synthesized. Rare earth complex Eu(GI)3Phen with Eu3+ as central ion has been obtained. Subsequently, a simple strategy of grafting it onto LLDPE backbone was employed to delay the migration of Eu(GI)3Phen. The fluorescence spectrum indicated that the modified film emitted red light. Meanwhile, the accelerated dripping time of modified film was extended to 12 days.

Hydrothermal carbon microsphere (HTC) is a carbon-based fluorescent material, which can be synthesized by hydrothermal carbonization of glucose. In this article, a series of 4ZnO·B 2 O 3 ·H 2 O:Ln 3+ /HTC (where Ln = Eu or Tb) composites were prepared under hydrothermal conditions. The effects of the glucose concentration on the morphology, photoluminescence (PL) intensity and emission color of Zn 3.64 :Eu 0.24 [B 2 O 7 ]·H 2 O/HTCx and Zn 3.55 :Tb 0.3 [B 2 O 7 ]·H 2 O/HTC y were investigated. The relationship between morphology and PL intensity of composites was discussed. The results revealed that the presence of HTC did not change the original emission color of 4ZnO·B 2 O 3 ·H 2 O:Ln 3+ (where Ln = Eu or Tb) materials, but greatly increased their PL intensity, the sphere-like morphology composites have the strongest PL intensity. The Zn 3.64 :Eu 0.24 [B 2 O 7 ]·H 2 O/HTCx and Zn 3.55 :Tb 0.3 [B 2 O 7 ]·H 2 O/HTC y emit bright red light and green light, respectively, under respective excitation wavelengths. The present research suggests that the 4ZnO·B 2 O 3 ·H 2 O:Ln 3+ /HTC (where Ln = Eu or Tb) composites may be candidates of red and green phosphors for display and lighting applications.

Control of Eu valence is one of the main issues to obtain mixed−valent Eu 2+/3+ co−doped phosphor with flexible−tunable emission spectra. In this study, for the first time, we report a simple single cation substitution strategy for controlling Eu valence. The structure of Sr 1− x Ba x Al 2 Si 2 O 8 host was tailored by Ba 2+ substitution for Sr 2+ ions. The lattice parameters show a linear evolution with increase in Ba 2+ amount. Correspondingly, the Eu 3+ emission intensity also increases over Ba 2+ amount. The spectral variation was considered to be attributed to the suppression of Eu 3+ reduction by the lattice stress, which is introduced by ion substitution. Finally, valence control of Eu and spectral tuning of Eu 3+/2+ co−doped Sr 1− x Ba x Al 2 Si 2 O 8 phosphor were realized by the proposed strategy. This study will open a novel avenue for Eu valence control and spectral tuning of mixed–valent Eu doped phosphors.

To further promote the visible-light photocatalytic efficiency of Bi 24 O 31 Cl 10 , g-C 3 N 4 /Eu(III) doped Bi 24 O 31 Cl 10 heterojunction composites (CN/Eu-BCO) were successfully synthesized via modified solution combustion and immersion-calcination method. The effects of Eu(III) dopants and g-C 3 N 4 coupling on the micro-structures and the photocatalytic efficiency of Bi 24 O 31 Cl 10 towards Rhodamine B (RhB) degradation were investigated in detail. The results displayed that Eu(III) doping and coupling with g-C 3 N 4 can largely promote the photocatalytic efficiency of Bi 24 O 31 Cl 10 . The photodegradation rate of RhB over 5CN/0.01Eu-BCO can reach to be 91.9% in 40 min, which was 8.46 folds of Bi 24 O 31 Cl 10 , 1.91 folds of 0.01Eu-BCO, and 1.72 folds of 5CN/BCO. The main radical species being responsible for RhB degradation were ● O 2 − and ● OH. Furthermore, 5CN/0.01Eu-BCO composite photocatalyst exhibited good reusability and stability.

The high value rare earth elements (REEs) recycling from wastewater remains a great challenge. In the present work, biological calcium carbonate (bio-CaCO 3 ) was functionalized by mussel-inspired polydopamine (PDA) chemistry to improve its Eu(III) adsorption in aqueous solutions. The functional groups of the organic matters in bio-CaCO 3 that served as both reductant and coupling agent were found to be able to effectively inhibit the auto-oxidation of PDA in alkaline environments, rendering a uniform and tight PDA coating on bio-CaCO 3 . The batch experiments indicated that the mussel-inspired PDA functionalized bio-CaCO 3 (bio-PDA) exhibited superior Eu(III) adsorption capacity in aqueous solutions. The adsorption isotherm was fitted well with the Langmuir model, and the maximum adsorption capacity was determined to be 151.52 mg/g. The adsorption kinetics followed pseudo-second-order model, suggesting that the adsorption was chemisorption. Based on the scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS) analyses, the possible Eu(III) adsorption mechanism of bio-PDA was proposed as the coordination of Eu(III) with the abundant catechol and amine/imine groups on the PDA coating. Our work has demonstrated great application potentials of bio-PDA as an efficient Eu(III) adsorbent and provided new insights into the interaction mechanism between PDA and Eu(III).
