The red emission with suitable peak wavelength and narrow band is acutely required for high color rendering index (CRI) white LEDs without at the cost of the luminous efficacy. Herein, the Li 2 Ca 2 Mg 2 Si 2 N 6 :Eu 2+ red phosphor was prepared with facile solid-state method using Ca 3 N 2 , Mg 3 N 2 , Si 3 N 4 , Li 3 N, and Eu 2 O 3 as the safety raw materials under atmospheric pressure for the first time, which shows red emission peaking at 638 nm with full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 62 nm under blue light irradiation and becomes the desired red phosphor to realize the balance between luminous efficacy and high CRI in white LEDs. The morphology, structure, luminescence properties, thermal quenching behavior, and chromaticity stability of the Li 2 Ca 2 Mg 2 Si 2 N 6 :Eu 2+ phosphor are investigated in detail. Concentration quenching occurs when the Eu 2+ content exceeds 1.0 mol%, whereas high-temperature photoluminescent measurements show a 32% drop from the room-temperature efficiency at 423 K. In view of the excellent luminescence performances of Li 2 Ca 2 Mg 2 Si 2 N 6 :Eu 2+ phosphor, a white LEDs with CRI of 91 as a proof-of-concept experiment was fabricated by coating the title phosphor with Y 3 Al 5 O 12 :Ce 3+ on a blue LED chip. In addition, the potential application of the title phosphor in plant growth LED device was also demonstrated. All the results indicate that Li 2 Ca 2 Mg 2 Si 2 N 6 :Eu 2+ is a promising red-emitting phosphor for blue LED-based high CRI white LEDs and plant growth lighting sources.

The development of advanced luminescent materials is highly desirable for developing the energy-efficient lighting technology. However, it is still challenging to achieve stable full-color tuning in the same matrix upon a single-beam light excitation so as to ensure the high color stability and consistency. Herein, Eu 3+ /Eu 2+ /Tb 3+ co-doped sintered nanoporous glass via the dipping strategy is fabricated, which can emit blue, green and red emissions simultaneously by simply modifying the thermal treatment temperature. This full-color tuning is attributed to the dual roles of the thermal reduction of Eu 3+ to Eu 2+ in Al 2 O 3 -SiO 2 glass and simultaneous emissions of Eu 3+ /Eu 2+ /Tb 3+ activators. The densification of nanoporous glass via sintering could effectively decrease the amount of hydroxyl groups that present in the glass matrix, resulting in 5 times enhancement of the photoluminescence intensity and longer photoluminescence lifetime of rare earth (RE) ions. The thermal reduction of Eu 3+ to Eu 2+ is due to the reduction environment provided by Al 3+ ions in the Al 2 O 3 -SiO 2 glass. The energy transfer (ET) from Eu 2+ to Tb 3+ , Eu 2+ to Eu 3+ and Tb 3+ to Eu 3+ have been investigated in detail. Based on the ET mechanism, rational PL spectra design was demonstrated by varying the concentration of Eu 3+ ions in solution. The Color Correlated Temperature (CCT) and the Color Rendered Index (CRI) values of the white light emission glass are 7420 K (Cold-white emission) and 80.85, the temperature dependent photoluminescence (TDPL) analysis reflects the white light emission glass possesses high thermal stability and excellent thermal restorability. This facile fabrication and full-color tuning of Eu 3+ /Eu 2+ /Tb 3+ co-doped sintered nanoporous Al 2 O 3 -SiO 2 glass may provide a novel luminescent material for white-light emitting diodes (WLEDs) application.

In the field of luminescent materials, the search for good substrates and the use of a single substrate to excite near-ultraviolet chips to produce white LED devices has always been of great interest. This study utilized energy transfer between Bi 3+ and Eu 3+ to design KAlSiO 4 : 0.02Bi 3+ , 0.04Eu 3+ red emission phosphors with a potassium nepheline structure, which were calcined in air with a high-temperature solid-state method. Under 286 nm excitation, energy transfer between Bi 3+ and Eu 3+ up to 85.9 %. Through DFT theoretical calculations, it was found that the bandgap of the matrix was 4.86 eV, KAlSiO 4 : 0.02Bi 3+ , 0.04Eu 3+ has excellent heat quenching resistance, and the emission intensity at 150 °C is 92.9 % of that seen at room temperature . Second, by doping with Eu 2 O 3 and calcining in a reducing atmosphere, KAlSiO 4 : 0.02Eu 2+ , 0.1Li + broadband blue emitting phosphors were obtained. Finally, KAlSiO 4 : 0.02Bi 3+ , 0.04Eu 3+ was mixed with KAlSiO 4 : 0.02Eu 2+ , 0.1Li + to prepare a near-ultraviolet white LED device. The color rendering index of the device reached 87.1, the color coordinates were (0.3328, 0.3015), and the color temperature was 5422 K. These results proved that KAlSiO 4 : 0.02Bi 3+ , 0.04Eu 3+ samples have potential for use in near-ultraviolet white LEDs and that KAlSiO 4 is a good substrate in the field of luminescence. This work provides a new breakthrough in the use of a single substrate to prepare multiple colored fluorescent powders and mix them together to produce white LED devices.

Dynamic photoluminescence and photochromism are two critical technologies applied in advanced anti-counterfeiting and encryption. In this work, an innovative phosphor of CaAl 12 O 19 :Eu 2+/3+ combining the features of dynamic photoluminescence and photochromism is developed for the first time. After being irradiated by a portable 254 nm ultraviolet lamp, the photoluminescent color of the phosphor can dynamically change from red to magenta in dark field, and the surface color can dynamically alter from white to light brown in bright field. Based on these two appealing features, an application in advanced anti-counterfeiting and encryption is designed which can write, encrypt, and erase information successfully, thus guaranteeing information security. Furthermore, a composite material of CaAl 12 O 19 :Eu 2+/3+ /PDMS is fabricated for application in advanced anti-counterfeiting and encryption in both dark and bright fields, which is difficult to be replicated.

Eu 2+ , Dy 3+ and Zr 4+ ions co-doped strontium aluminate (i.e., SrAl 2 O 4 :Eu 2+ ,Dy 3+ ,Zr 4+ )/molybdate (i.e., Ho 2 MoO 6 or Nd 2 MoO 6 ) with photo-/mechano-luminescence and allochroic effect as multi-optical functional hybrid pigments were prepared via solid state reactions and subsequent mixing. The phosphor and hybrid pigments were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy, L∗a∗b∗ color scale analysis, spectrophotometry and mechanoluminescent measurement. The results show that the optimum luminescent emission intensity of SrAl 2 O 4 :Eu 2+ ,Dy 3+ ,Zr 4+ phosphor can be obtained when 5 mol% Zr 4+ ions is doped into the lattice. Under the excitation of 365 nm wavelength, the hybrid pigments prepared with the phosphor and molybdate at a mass ratio of 1:1 present a green broad band emission located at 460–650 nm due to 4f 6 5d 1 →4f 7 transitions of Eu 2+ ions. The hybrid pigments have the superior mechanoluminescent property and emit light after being exerted by mechanical stresses. Besides, the hybrid pigments also exhibit an allochroic effect under different illuminants. In addition, the anti-counterfeiting of the hybrid pigments as a promising application was also presented.

We report on the development of a new class of highly sensitive luminescent optical thermometers building blocks via engineering multicolor-emitting Eu2+-activated Li4(Sr1–xCa1+x)(SiO4)2 phosphors. Since the Eu2+ ions occupied two diverse sites in the host, the resultant compounds emitted two distinct emissions in blue and yellow regions. In particular, the blue emission is ascribed to the Sr2+ sites, while the yellow emission is attributed to Ca2+ sites. By adjusting the content ratio between Ca2+ and Sr2+ ions, the emitted color can be changed from yellowish-brown to blue upon 365 nm excitation. Furthermore, with the aid of the fluorescence intensity rate technology, the temperature-sensing ability of the synthesized phosphors is revealed by means of detecting the inequable responses of the blue and yellow emissions to the temperature. When x = 0.4, the maximum relative sensitivity of the developed samples is 1.181% K–1. Importantly, the sensor sensitivities of the resultant phosphors can be adjusted by engineering the composition. These features elaborate that the Eu2+-activated Li4(Sr1–xCa1+x)(SiO4)2 phosphors with high sensor sensitivities present as one of most promising candidates for noninvasive optical thermometers.

(Eu 2+ , Dy 3+ )-co-doped strontium aluminate (SrAl 2 O 4 :Eu 2+ , Dy 3+ ) powder as a mechanoluminescent (ML) phosphor was synthesized via soft mechanochemical pretreatment of precursor mixtures in a stirred media mill and subsequent calcination . Effect of soft mechanochemical pretreatment of precursors on the synthesis process as well as the photoluminescent (PL) and ML properties of SrAl 2 O 4 :Eu 2+ , Dy 3+ phosphor was investigated. The precursor mixtures unground and ground at different time and the resultant phosphors were characterized by laser particle size analysis , X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry , Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and optical property measurement. The results reveal that soft mechanochemical pretreatment of precursor mixture promotes the crystal growth, and reduces the subsequent calcination temperature. SrAl 2 O 4 :Eu 2+ , Dy 3+ phosphor can be obtained via calcining at 1200 °C for precursor mixture ground at 60 min, but formed via calcining at 1400 °C for unground precursor mixture. The phosphor synthesized with precursor mixture ground at 60 min has the maximum PL and ML intensities due to the enhancement of Eu 2+ and Dy 3+ ions into the crystal lattice to form more electron traps . The measurements by a designed ML instrument indicate that the ML intensity increases with increasing impact stress, and decreases with multiple applications of the same impact stress on phosphor disks.

A series of novel blue-emitting Sr 3 CeNa(PO 4 ) 3 F:Eu 2+ (SCNPOF:Eu 2+ ) phosphors were synthesized through solid-state reaction. The as-prepared phosphor shows a blue light emission ranging from 350 ~ 550 nm centered at 447 nm under 340 nm UV light excitation, attributed to the 4f-5d transition of Eu 2+ . The energy transfer mechanism from Ce 3+ to Eu 2+ was identified as dipole–dipole interaction, and the energy transfer efficiency and critical distance were calculated. Subsequently, a white light-emitting diode (WLED) with a color rendering index of 94 was fabricated by combining a 365 nm UV-LED chip with the as-prepared blue-emitting SCNPOF:Eu 2+ phosphor, commercial green (Ba, Sr) 2 SiO 4 :Eu 2+ phosphor, and red CaAlSiN 3 :Eu 2+ phosphor. The results indicate that the SCNPOF:Eu 2+ phosphors have potential application in UV-based WLEDs.

A multifunctional, multiphase-supported photocatalyst was fabricated via the combination of LCD three-dimensional (3D) printing, cold plasma discharge (CPD) technology, and surface chemistry to be used for the degradation of organic pollutants in water and for the generation of hydrogen gas. BiOBr was chosen as the main catalytic phase and was used in association with a phosphor, SrAl2O4:Eu2+,Dy3+ (SAED), and a metal–organic framework, Ni-BDC. Their immobilization was realized thanks to polydopamine (PDA), which is used as a coupling agent. While BiOBr was the most active photocatalytic phase, the phosphor acted as a light-storing component for photodegradation in the dark and overall, as a boost for photoactivity. PDA also boosted the photoactivity, in parallel with its crucial role in the immobilization of the SAED/Ni-MOF/BiOBr catalyst on fractal polymer support. An in situ complexation-assisted precipitation (ISCAP) process was used, allowing the formation of the catalytic phases with nano features. The resulting hybrid photocatalysts were tested through rhodamine B (RhB) dye photodegradation upon visible light irradiation or light/dark alternating conditions to simulate more realistic variable light illumination. We found that, although used in a very small amount, the Ni-MOF had a significant impact on the photoactivity, forming a Z-scheme heterojunction with BiOBr. Finally, H2 evolution testing further established the photocatalytic activity and versatility of the supported catalysts.

Borate-based phosphors have emerged as ideal host materials for near-ultraviolet ( n UV) pumped phosphor-converted white light-emitting diodes (pc- w LEDs) owing to their mild synthesis conditions, broad transparency window, and excellent chemical and thermal stability. Cubic Ba 3 Y 2 B 6 O 15 (BYB) features a highly symmetric lattice structure, providing stable binding sites for rare-earth ions. Its [YO 6 ] octahedral structure allows for controllable lattice distortion, making it an ideal host for multivalent rare-earth luminescent systems. In this study, Ce 3+ , Eu 3+ , Eu 2+ , and Ca 2+ co-doped BYB nanophosphors were prepared in an Ar atmosphere. The partial substitution of Ba 2+ by Ca 2+ promotes the generation of more oxygen vacancies, which in turn induces the self-reduction of Eu 3+ to Eu 2+ . The phosphor exhibits strong absorption characteristics at 365 nm. Acting as an efficient sensitizer, Ce 3+ can simultaneously transfer energy to Eu 2+ and Eu 3+ . By tuning the Ca 2+ content, the Eu 3+ /Eu 2+ ratio and the emission color can be continuously adjusted, achieving a smooth transition from blue-green to orange-red. This Ca 2+ mediated strategy stabilizes the coexistence of Eu 2+ and Eu 3+ , addressing the key limitations of traditional single-phase phosphors. It provides a novel approach for developing high-performance n UV-excited warm white phosphors and demonstrates potential for widespread application in highly efficient pc- w LED devices.

Red-Green-Blue (RGB) phosphors are promising for optical information encoding and full-spectrum white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs). Herein, KCsPbBr 3 perovskite quantum dots (PQDs, ∼5.0 nm) were successfully formed on Sr 2 MgSi 2 O 7 : Eu 2+ phosphors via a facile deposition–precipitation method, yielding blue-green emitting composites. The KCsPbBr 3 -Sr 2 MgSi 2 O 7 : Eu 2+ composites exhibit tunable emissions at 463 nm and 519 nm under 365 nm excitation. Specifically, the blue emission at 463 nm is attributed to the 4f 6 5 d 1 → 4f 7 transition of Eu 2+ ions in the Sr 2 MgSi 2 O 7 host, while the green emission at 519 nm originates from the emission of KCsPbBr 3 perovskite quantum dots. Notably, the emission intensity at 75 wt% KCsPbBr 3 is ∼240 times higher than that at 9 wt% and a blue afterglow persists after removing UV excitation. Under external stimulation, the composites display color-variable patterns with fluorescence mode conversion, enabling multi-dimensional anti-counterfeiting. For instance, an RGB pattern appears white under natural light but transforms into a red-green pattern under UV and afterglow modes. Furthermore, full-spectrum WLEDs with high color rendering (Ra = 90, Rf = 83, Rg = 91), comparable to sunlight, are achieved by combining the composites with CaAlSiN 3 : Eu 2+ . These results indicate that KCsPbBr 3 -Sr 2 MgSi 2 O 7 : Eu 2+ PQD phosphors have strong potential in advanced anti-counterfeiting and full-spectrum WLED applications.

In this work, a series of Eu2+-doped SrLa2Sc2O7 phosphors were rationally designed and synthesized, exhibiting high photoluminescence quantum yields and excellent thermal stability. Under 440 nm blue-light excitation, these phosphors show a broad red emission band centered at 613 nm, with a full width at half-maximum (fwhm) of 81 nm (corresponding to ∼0.26 eV at ∼613 nm). By employing a Sr2+/Ba2+ substitution strategy to modulate the local crystal field around Eu2+, both a redshift in the emission peak and significant spectral broadening were achieved. Notably, complete substitution of Sr2+ with Ba2+ yielded a BaLa2Sc1.985O7:0.015Eu2+ phosphor that exhibits a broadband near-infrared (NIR) emission peaking at 812 nm with an ultrabroad fwhm of 318 nm (corresponding to ∼0.59 eV at ∼812 nm). Moreover, aliovalent substitution of Eu2+ for Sc3+ generates oxygen-vacancy-related defect centers that act as carrier traps, extending the emission lifetime and enhancing resistance to thermal quenching in SrLa2Sc1.985O7:0.015Eu2+. In addition, incorporation of larger Ba2+ ions softens the host lattice, strengthening excited-state lattice relaxation and electron–phonon coupling, thereby increasing the Stokes shift and further broadening the Eu2+ emission band to realize tunable broadband red-to-NIR emission in Eu2+-activated Sr1–xBaxLa2Sc2O7 phosphors. These findings broaden the family of Eu2+-activated scandate oxide phosphors and provide a viable strategy for tuning broadband NIR emission via targeted cation substitution devices.
