The determination of α-glucosidase activity through a nano fluorescent sensor of F-PDA−CoOOH

Heng Zhang,Zhen Wang,Xiaoqing Yang,Zi-Long Li,Linhao Sun,Jimei Ma,Hong Jiang

A sensitive nanocomplex probe prepared from fluorescent polydopamine nanoparticles (F-PDA) and cobalt oxyhydroxide (CoOOH) nanosheets was established for the determination of α-glucosidase activity. In this detection system, the fluorescence of F-PDA was firstly quenched by CoOOH nanosheets based on fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET). Subsequently, ascorbic acid was produced from 2-O-α- d -glucopyranosyl- l -ascorbic acid which was selectively hydrolyzed by α-glucosidase. CoOOH was reduced to Co 2+ by the released ascorbic acid, which resulted in the recovery of F-PDA nanoparticles fluorescence. In consequence, α-glucosidase activity was determined by the fluorescence recovery degree of the F-PDA nanoparticle. This fluorescent method showed a good linear relationship with the activity of α-glucosidase from 2 to 80 U L −1 and low detection limit of 1.65 U L −1  (S/N = 3). This fluorescence probe with high selectivity and sensitivity demonstrated a remarkable applicability in human serum samples and provided an alternative for α-glucosidase inhibitors screening in the discovery of anti-diabetes drugs.

Cr3+ and F− co-doped lithium manganese oxide cathode for medium-temperature reserve primary cell

Hengxu Song,Yuhong Zhao,Yongqiang Niu,Hua Hou

Medium-temperature molten salt reserve primary cell utilizes low-melting nitrate electrolyte, that is considered suitable for geothermal borehole as well as oil and gas exploration . In this work, Cr 3+ and F − ions were introduced into spinel lithium manganate oxides by high-temperature solid-state method and verified by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The effects of fluorine content on the morphology and discharge performance of the LiCr 0.1 Mn 1.9 O 4− x F x (0 ≤  x  ≤ 0.5) have been studied in LiCr 0.1 Mn 1.9 O 4− x F x /LiNO 3 -KNO 3 -Ca(NO 3 ) 2 /Li-Mg-B system. Fluoride-doped samples have a significant improvement in discharge performance at the condition of 10 mA·cm −2 and 250 °C because of the stabilization of the crystal structure. Factors of operating temperature and current density have a significant effect on battery discharge performance, and the surroundings of 10 mA·cm −2 and 200–250 °C contributes the battery to achieve high performance. That indicates the LiCr 0.1 Mn 1.9 O 4− x F x /LiNO 3 -KNO 3 -Ca(NO 3 ) 2 /Li-Mg-B battery shows great potential in geothermal borehole as well as oil and gas exploration environment.

Bio-nanoplatforms based on carbon dots conjugating with F-substituted nano-hydroxyapatite for cellular imaging

Yafei Zhao,Liyi Shi,Jianhui Fang,Xin Feng

Carbon dots (CDs) have shown great promise in a wide range of bioapplications due to their tunable optical properties and noncytotoxicity. For the first time, a rational strategy was designed to construct new bio-nanoplatforms based on carboxylic acid terminated CDs (CDs-COOH) conjugating with amino terminated F-substituted nano-hydroxyapatite (NFAp) via EDC/NHS coupling chemistry. The monodisperse NFAp nanorods were functionalized with o-phosphoethanolamine (PEA) to provide them with amino groups and render them hydrophilic with respect to the ligand exchange process. The CDs-COOH@PEA-NFAp conjugates exhibits bright blue fluorescence under UV illumination, excellent photostability and colloidal stability. Due to their low cytotoxicity and good biocompatibility as determined by methyl thiazolyl tetrazolium (MTT) assay, the CDs-COOH@PEA-NFAp conjugates were successfully applied as bio-nanoplatforms to MCF-7 breast cancer cells for cellular imaging in vitro. More importantly, the functional CDs conjugated to NFAp provide an extended and general approach to construct different water-soluble NFAp bio-nanoplatforms for other easily functionalised luminescent materials. Therefore, these green nanoplatforms may be a prospective candidate for applications in bioimaging or targeted biological therapy and drug delivery.

Multi-layer SiC/Mg and F co-substituted hydroxyapatite/chitosan bioactive coating for carbon fibers

Zhang Leilei,Li Hejun,Li Kezhi,Liu Shoujie,Zhang Yulei,Yao Pei,Zhang Wenqi,Chen Guanzheng

A multi-layer coating composed of SiC inner-layer and Mg and F co-substituted hydroxyapatite/chitosan hybrid out-layer for carbon fibers has been synthesized using a combination method of chemical vapor deposition , electrochemical deposition and ion exchange method. The morphology, microstructure and in-vitro bioactivity of the multi-layer coating are analyzed. The results show that the SiC inner-layer exhibits a squamous shape. Mg and F co-substituted hydroxyapatite/chitosan hybrid out-layer covers the SiC inner-layer coated carbon fiber entirely and uniformly with a flat structure. The multi-layer coating could induce the precipitation of particle-shaped apatite crystals with Ca/P molar ratios of 1.34–1.51 on its surface in simulated body fluid. The multi-layer SiC/Mg and F co-substituted hydroxyapatite/chitosan coated carbon fibers should have potential application for tissue engineering.

Manganese valence modulation in δ-MnO2 via F-doping for enhanced electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction

Xinyu Shi,Libo Deng,Lingna Sun,Qianling Zhang,Xiangzhong Ren,Yongliang Li

Manganese dioxide (MnO2) is recognized as a promising candidate for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER); however, its practical application is hindered by limited active sites and low electrical conductivity. Fluorine (F), known for its strong electron affinity and electronegativity, can modulate the surface electronic structure and physicochemical properties of catalysts. In this study, we synthesized MnO2 nanosheets and fluorine-doped MnO2 (F-MnO2) using simple hydrothermal and ion-exchange methods. We then assessed the influence of fluorine doping on the intrinsic OER activity and stability of these catalysts, as well as their underlying catalytic mechanisms. By manipulating the amount of fluorine introduced and the fluorination temperature, we explored the relationship between varying fluorine concentrations and OER performance. The experimental results show that F-MnO2 exhibits higher OER activity than pristine MnO2. At a current density of 10 mA cm–2, the overpotential required for F-MnO2 is merely 320 mV, substantially lower than that of pristine MnO2. This enhanced performance is ascribed to fluorine doping, which leads to an increased quantity of active Mn3+ centers and oxygen vacancies, along with an expanded electrochemically active surface area. Furthermore, F-MnO2 displays improved stability during the testing period. It maintains long-term stability for over 25 h, further corroborating the catalyst's excellent anti-oxidation and anti-corrosion properties in alkaline water electrolysis.

Impact of ternary nanocomposite In2O3/SnO2/F-CDs composition on low ppm NO2 sensing performance

Yi Zhong,Chenhan Zhang,Zhihua Ying,Yuan Jiang,Weiqin Sheng

Nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) is a significant air pollutant with a notable environmental impact, necessitating precise monitoring. However, most existing NO 2 sensing materials exhibit low sensitivity and require high-temperature operation. In this study, we employed a hydrothermal and co-precipitation method to synthesize a novel ternary nanocomposite , In 2 O 3 /SnO 2 nanoparticles (NPs)/fluorine-doped carbon quantum dots (F-CDs). By varying the mass ratio of In 2 O 3 to SnO 2 NPs, we investigated the gas-sensing performance of the composite towards NO 2 . The results demonstrate that when the ratio of SnO 2 and In 2 O 3 reaches to 1 : 2, the 2-In 2 O 3 /SnO 2 /F-CDs gas sensor exhibited the highest response, excellent selectivity , and remarkable stability under ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation at room temperature (∼25 °C). Furthermore, the response of the 2-In 2 O 3 /SnO 2 /F-CDs gas sensor displayed a strong linear relationship with the concentration of NO 2 gas. At a NO 2 gas concentration of 3 ppm, the sensitivity was 238, which is significantly higher than that of In 2 O 3 /SnO 2 NPs and In 2 O 3 sensors. The response time and recovery time were measured at 62 s and 33 s, respectively. Finally, based on experimental characterization results and band structure analysis, we confirmed the promising effects of ternary nanocomposite in enhancing gas sensing.

Optimization of F/M ratio for stability of aerobic granular process via quantitative sludge discharge

Di Wu,Zhiming Zhang,Zhuodong Yu,Liang Zhu

Food to microorganisms (F/M) ratio is one of the most important factors affecting microbial growth and pollutant removal in biological wastewater treatment system. For stability of aerobic granular process, optimal range of F/M ratio and a maneuverable F/M ratio control method via quantitative sludge discharge were investigated in this study. Results showed that stable aerobic granules were achieved with good settleability, high pollutant removal efficiency and microbial diversity when F/M ratio was controlled at 0.4–0.5 gCOD/gSS d. In addition, a maneuverable F/M ratio control method via quantitative sludge discharge was developed to verify the feasibility for optimization of F/M ratio. By this method, aerobic granules cultivated with the F/M ratio of 0.4 ± 0.02 gCOD/gSS d had better pollutant removal performance and stable structure with higher protein-like components in EPS. This study further revealed the importance of F/M ratio in the stability of aerobic granular sludge process.

Efficient Photocatalytic Degradation of RhB in Water via Co3O4 and F-Doped Carbon Nitride Heterojunction

Linbo Chen,Yingying Zhu,Di Wang,Jinyuan Zhu,Yumeng Ren,Geng Chen

Graphical A novel Co─FCN heterojunction photocatalyst was synthesized by introducing Co 3 O 4 and fluorine into graphitic carbon nitride (CN) using a simple one-pot pyrolysis method. The photocatalytic activity was assessed through the photodegradation of Rhodamine B (RhB). The resulting Co─FCN photocatalyst demonstrated superior photocatalytic performance and stability compared to pure CN. Photocatalysis is an effective solution to degrade organic dye discharge in wastewater treatment due to its efficiency, environmental friendliness and cost-effectiveness. However, issues such as limited visible light absorption and rapid charge carrier recombination hinder its practical use. In this research, the heterojunction (Co─FCN) composed of carbon fluoride nitride and cobalt tetroxide (Co 3 O 4 ) was successfully prepared by a simple one-pot pyrolysis method. The obtained nanocomposites showed their efficiency as photocatalyst in the photodecomposition of Rhodamine B (RhB). The relationship between microstructure and properties of photocatalyst was studied in detail by means of characterization techniques. The results showed that the RhB degradation efficiency of Co 3 ─FCN was 92.91% within 60 min irradiation time. The results of free radical scavenging experiments show that superoxide anion (·O 2− ) and hydroxyl radical (·OH) are the main active species in Co─FCN composite catalysts. In addition, the potential degradation pathway of RhB was inferred based on the intermediates detected by liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LC-MS), and the preliminary photocatalytic reaction mechanism of Co─FCN heterogeneous catalyst was constructed accordingly. Therefore, this research provides new insights into the preparation and modification of CN photocatalysts, thereby promoting the application potential of efficient photocatalysts in the degradation of organic pollutants.

Solvent-derived inorganic F and N-rich solid electrolyte interface for stable lithium metal batteries

Lei Zhang,Bing Sun,Qinghua Liu,Lin Song,Teibang Zhang,Xiaobo Duan

Extensive research has focused on the lithium (Li) metal anode, but progress in developing this technology has been hindered by the formation of lithium dendrites and their irreversible effects. In this study, an inorganic LiF-Li 3 N-rich solid electrolyte interface (SEI) is established in ether electrolyte through the direct use of 2,3-difluoro-5-(trifluoromethyl)pyridine (DP) to enable uniform Li deposition and enhance interfacial properties for a stable Li metal anode. Theoretical calculations show that DP has a higher tendency to decompose on lithium metal. An alternative approach involving the inclusion of additional anions into the solvation sheath of Li + ions using weakly solvating solvents is proposed. During Li plating, DP is reduced to form a LiF and Li 3 N-rich SEI, resulting in a heterogeneous SEI layer on the Li metal anode surface. This approach allows stable cycling of Li|Li cells for over 1800 h at current densities of 5 mA cm −2 and 15 mAh cm −2 . The method presented here has potential significance in the identification of suitable electrolytes for future research on lithium metal anodes.

Trace F-doped Co3O4 nanoneedles for enhanced acidic water oxidation activity via promoting OH coverage

Genyan Hao,Tao Zhao,Qiang Fang,Yunzhen Jia,Dandan Li,Dazhong Zhong,Jinping Li,Qiang Zhao

Exploring Earth-abundant and efficient electrocatalysts to replace Ir and Ru for the acidic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is essential to reduce the cost of clean hydrogen production. Here, we show that trace amounts of electronegative non-metallic element fluorine (F)-doped Co3O4 nanoneedles improve the activity and stability of Co3O4. The F-doped Co3O4 nanoneedles supported on carbon paper (F-Co3O4/CP) exhibit an overpotential of 350 mV at 10 mA cm−2 for the acidic OER. In addition, their performance remains consistent after continuous operation for 80 h. Detailed investigations reveal that introducing an anion promotes the enrichment of OH on the surface of Co3O4 and prevents acid corrosion, thereby enhancing the intrinsic OER activity and stability. Theoretical calculations further indicate that F doping can effectively improve electron transfer and optimize the energy barrier for the formation of *OOH intermediates, which significantly improves OER performance. This study provides guidance for designing efficient and stable non-noble metal acidic water oxidation catalysts.

3-hydroxykynurenine increase in kynurenine pathway driven bisphenol F induced anxiety- and depression-like behaviors

Yuxin Lin,Luyao Wang,Sining Meng,Jianjia Liu,Xinyu Li,Wenjuan Wang,Miaoyang Hu,Xi Wang,Weixia Duan,Shangcheng Xu,Jun Wang,Rong Gao

Bisphenol F (BPF), one of the major substitutes for bisphenol A (BPA), is increasingly used in pharmaceuticals, food packaging, and chemical manufacturing. Emerging evidence suggests its potential neuropsychiatric risks. However, the underlying mechanisms remain poorly characterized. Thus, the present study was performed to investigate the roles of the kynurenine (KYN) pathway in BPF induced anxiety- and depression-like behaviors, especially the keys roles of the toxic metabolite 3-hydroxykynurenine (3−HK). The mice were administrated with BPF (10, 40, 160 μg/kg/day) for 30 consecutive days, and the behaviors as well as the changes of the KYN pathway were examined. Noteworthily, even low-dose of BPF exposure (40 μg/kg/day) elicited pronounced anxiety- and depression-like behaviors, molecularly shown as the synaptic marker proteins (PSD95, SYN) and dendritic spine proteins (Drebrin) loss in the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus, along with impaired synaptic connection. The UHPLC-MS/MS metabolomic profiling revealed the aberrant metabolism of the KYN pathway, as shown by the elevated neurotoxic metabolite 3-HK and decreased neuroprotective metabolite kynurenic acid (KynA). Mechanistic analyses demonstrated that the 3-HK rate-limiting enzyme KMO was upregulated while the KynA rate-limiting enzyme KAT2 was downregulated in mouse brain. Notably, pharmalogical inhibition of KMO (GSK180) or blockage kynurenine generation with the TDO2 inhibitor (680C91) substantially ameliorated the BPF induced anxiety- and depression-like behaviors and synaptic impairments. Collectively, the present study unravels a previously unrecognized the BPF induced anxiety- and depression-like behaviors in mice via KMO and 3-HK increase. Therefore, targeting the KMO may provide novel interventive strategy for BPF induced neurobehavioral disorders.

Anchoring metal cobalt species on defective alumina for enhanced catalytic performance in F-T synthesis

Qiuyao Jiao,Yan Liu,Ran Yu,Lei Li

For supported heterogeneous catalyst, metal-support interaction (MSI) is very important factors for catalytic performance. Commercial γ-alumina was reduced with hydrogen in advance, providing strong anchoring sites for metal (metal oxide) species. This research demonstrates the use of pre-reduced alumina as catalyst carrier to anchor metal Co species in FTS compared with unreduced one. The defective alumina supported catalyst displayed a supeior performance. The Co/RAl2O3-550 catalyst showed surprisingly high CO conversion of 56.0%, C5+ hydrocarbons selectivity of 93.2%, and a low methane selectivity of 2.7% at a remarkable high activity (CTY = 1.1 × 10-5 molCO gCo-1 s−1). It revealed the strong reduction of alumina generated more defective sites, which was strongly anchored with metal cobalt species under MSI. Besides, the reduction of alumina also boosted the number of surface L-acidity, promoting the CO absorption rate through CO dissociation. These results reveal the unique property of defective Al2O3 supported cobalt catalysts, and provide a practical strategy to explore stable and efficient FTS catalysts.
