Decomplexation Performance of Cu–EDTA and Parameter Optimization by Three-Dimensional Electro-Fenton

Ma Yameng,Huang Xiao,Han Qi,Yu Jianghua,Yu Fengjiao,Zhu Jia

The strong stability of Cu–ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (Cu–EDTA) results in the low decomplexation efficiency by the traditional Fenton process. For breaking this limitation, a three-dimensional electro-Fenton (3D-EF) system was constructed to study the decomplexation of Cu–EDTA at different pH, and the effects of Fe2+ concentration, particle electrode dosage, current density, and coexisting ions on decomplexation performance were investigated. The results showed that 3D-EF exhibited high pollutant removal efficiency in a wide pH range compared with the traditional electro-Fenton process. The optimal conditions for the removal of Cu–EDTA were as follows: the pH was 7, Fe2+ was 1 mmol L−1, granular activated carbon was 2 g L−1, and current density was 10 mA cm−2, and the optimum Cu–EDTA removal efficiency reached 90.95%. In addition, the presence of Cl− slightly improved the decomplexation efficiency, whereas NO3− and HPO42− inhibited the removal of Cu–EDTA. The kinetics of Cu–EDTA decomplexation in all experimental groups followed the first-order kinetic equation.

The type II MIL-100/BiOBr heterojunctions promote efficient photo-Fenton degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride

Bo Xue,Chuanruo Yang,Pengtao Guo,Ting Wang,Gan Li,Dahuan Liu

The low efficiency of photogenerated carriers separation and slow cycling of Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ in Fe-based metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have limited the improvement of their photo-Fenton activity. Therefore, in this work, MIL-100/BiOBr heterogeneous photo-Fenton catalyst was constructed by compositing MIL-100 with BiOBr nanosheets through a simple solvent evaporation method. In this system, the type II heterojunctions formed by the close contact of MIL-100 and BiOBr can promote the separation of photogenerated carriers and accelerate the redox cyclic of Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ , thereby significantly enhancing the photo-Fenton activity. Under visible light irradiation for 60 min, the best removal rate of tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) by MIL-100/BiOBr is 94.3 %. Remarkably, the MIL-100/BiOBr exhibits a nearly fourfold increase in degradation rate constant compared to MIL-100 at photo-Fenton system. In addition, the catalysts can maintain high degradation performance over a wide pH range (3–9) and the co-existence of different anions. An in-depth investigation of the degradation mechanism reveals that superoxide radicals ( · O 2 – ) and hydroxyl radicals (·OH) play major roles in the photo-Fenton system. Based on this, the possible degradation pathways were proposed. Therefore, this study provides a new strategy for Fe-based MOFs to remove emerging pollutants from wastewater by photo-Fenton reaction.

Biocompatible double emission boron nitrogen co-doped carbon quantum dots for selective and sensitive detection of Al3+ and Fe2+

Cunjin Wang,Qian Sun,Chenxi Li,Daibin Tang,Huanxian Shi,Enzhou Liu,Pengqi Guo,Weiming Xue,Jun Fan

In this work, dual-emission boron-nitrogen co-doped carbon quantum dots (B,N-CQDs) were synthesized by a micro-solvothermal method, and the prepared B,N-CQDs were used to detect Al 3+ and Fe 2+ . The doping of B elements changed the microstructure of CQDs and endowed them with a dual emission property (F 430 and F 500 ). The detection basis of Al 3+ and Fe 2+ with the B,N-CQDs were attributed to the reverse changes of double emission peaks( F 430 and F 500 ) and fluorescence intensity changes of B,N-CQDs, respectively. Besides, the limit of detection (LOD) of Al 3+ and Fe 2+ as low as 0.187 μM and 0.276 μM, respectively. In addition, B,N-CQDs were loaded onto filter paper to prepare a paper-based sensor for the detection of Al 3+ with the feature of being more portable and practical. Meanwhile, B,N-CQDs presented outstanding performance in the detection of Al 3+ in tap water and Fe content in ferrous sulfate tablets.

Fe2+-NTA synergized UV254 photolytic defluorination of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS): Enhancing through intramolecular electron density perturbation via electron acquisition

Yihua Chen,Jiaxin Zhu,Hang Ma,Yurong Gu,Tongzhou Liu

Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) is a persistent organic pollutant posing a risk in environmental persistence, bioaccumulation and biotoxicity. This study was to reach a comprehensive and deeper understanding of PFOS elimination in a UV 254 photolytic treatment with the co-presence of Fe 2+ and nitrilotriacetic acid trisodium salt (NTA). PFOS defluorination was noticeably enhanced in the UV/Fe 2+ -NTA treatment compared with UV/NTA, UV/Fe 2+ and our previously studied UV/Fe 3+ treatments. UV–vis, FTIR, and UPLC/MS-MS results indicated the formation of PFOS-Fe 2+ -NTA complex in PFOS, Fe 2+ and NTA mixture. The transition energy gap of PFOS-Fe 2+ -NTA decreased below the excitation energy supplied by UV 254 irradiation, corresponding with red shift appearing in UV–vis scanning spectrum. This favored intramolecular electron transfer from Fe 2+ -NTA to PFOS under UV 254 irradiation to form electron-accepting PFOS. Molecular electrostatic potential and atom charge distribution analyses suggested electron density rearrangement and perturbation in the perfluorinated carbon chain of electron-accepting PFOS, leading to the decrease in bond dissociation energies. Intermediate products detection suggested the parallel defluorination pathways of PFOS desulfonation, middle carbon chain scission and direct C-F cleavage. NTA exhibited crucial functions in the UV/Fe 2+ -NTA treatment by holding Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ in soluble form as a chelant and favoring water activation to generate hydrated electrons (e aq − ) under UV irradiation as a photosensitizer. Fe 2+ acting as the conduit for electron transfer and the bridge of PFOS anion and NTA was thought functioning best at 200 µM in this study. The degree of UV/Fe 2+ -NTA -synergized PFOS defluorination also depended on e aq − yield and UV 254 photon flux. The structure dependence on the electron transfer process of PFOS and PFOA was explored incorporating molecular structure descriptors. Because of possessing greater potential to acquire electrons or less likeliness to donate its electrons than PFOA, PFOS exhibited faster defluorination kinetics in the published “reduction treatments” than “oxidation” ones. Whereas, PFOA defluorination kinetics were at similar level in both “reduction” and “oxidation” treatments.

Insights into the inhibitive mechanism of chelators for biodiesel oxidation induced by Cu2+/Fe2+: An experimental and computational study

Xinru Han,Rongyan Li,Fashe Li,Yaozong Duan,Hua Wang

Biodiesel has attracted widespread attention as a renewable energy source. However, the presence of metal ion contaminants in biodiesel can lead to a decrease in fuel oxidative stability performance and alter fuel physicochemical properties, greatly limiting its large-scale application. This study proposes an effective method to inhibit biodiesel oxidation catalyzed by Cu 2+ /Fe 2+ via complexation of metal ions by chelators. Two typical chelators (1-Hydroxyethylidene-1,1-diphosphonic acid, HEDP; 2-phosphonobutane-1,2,4-tricarboxylic acid, PBTCA) were tested for their capability to improve the oxidation stability of biodiesel. The addition of HEDP was able to counteract the undesirable catalyzed oxidation effects on biodiesel induced by both Cu 2+ and Fe 2+ , while PBTCA was only effective for the case induced by Fe 2+ . With 0.05% HEDP addition, the oxidation induction times of biodiesel samples contaminated by Cu 2+ and Fe 2+ were extended by about 12 and 20 times, respectively. For the case of 0.05% PBTCA addition, the oxidation induction time of Fe 2+ contaminated biodiesel sample was extended by about 20 times, while that of Cu 2+ contaminated biodiesel sample was only extended by about 37%. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis indicated that either the addition of HEDP or PBTCA has little effect on the chemical structure of biodiesel. Molecular dynamics calculations were then carried out to unravel the inhibitive mechanism of HEDP and PBTCA on biodiesel oxidation. The complexation of Cu 2+ /Fe 2+ by HEDP and PBTCA can block the chain branching pathways, reduce the generation of active radicals and thus inhibit biodiesel oxidation.

A Fe2+-activated carbon dots nanozyme with high oxidase-like activity at neutral pH for antioxidants detection and discrimination

Yuyuan Chen,Xinyu Zhu,Lisha Feng,Shuli Tian,Jianbin Ye,Yongfang Zheng,Hu Zhu

In this study, we developed an innovative stimuli-responsive oxidase-mimicking nanozyme system based on carbon dots (CDs) and ferrous ions (Fe 2+ ) for rapid detection and effective discrimination of antioxidants under neutral conditions. The uniqueness of this system lies in its exhibition of oxidase-like activity activated by Fe 2+ , which acts as both a switch and a regulator of catalytic performance. Importantly, the Fe 2+ -triggered activation shows instantaneous response and reaches steady-state within 240 s. Another key feature of this system is its exceptional oxidase-like activity at neutral pH, overcoming the limitation of most oxidase mimics that require acidic conditions. Moreover, it shows remarkable cold tolerance, retaining over 70% catalytic activity even at 0 °C. Mechanistic studies reveal that Fe 2+ coordinates with functional groups on CDs, enhancing Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ conversion efficiency and accelerating electron transfer, which greatly promotes the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and subsequent TMB oxidation. Additionally, the generated Fe 3+ further catalyze TMB oxidation, synergistically enhancing the colorimetric reaction. Capitalizing on these attributes, we developed a colorimetric sensing platform for rapid and sensitive detection of antioxidants including ascorbic acid (AA), glutathione (GSH), and cysteine (Cys). Based on their differential inhibitory effects, we further constructed a sensor array that enables effective discrimination among these antioxidants. This work not only opens new avenues for designing nanozymes with stimulus-responsive properties, but also expands the toolbox for detecting and identifying antioxidants in complex samples under neutral conditions.

Nanostructured Fe2(MoO4)3 cathodes: Enhancing ion and electron kinetics for high-rate and low-temperature sodium-ion batteries

Ting Zhao,Hang Liu,Gacao Dou,Dongting Zhang,Junqiang Qiao,Juan Yang,Pengjun Ma,Cuiying Lu,Hongxia Li,Hongruo Ma,Kunjie Wang,Bingjun Yang

The nanostructured process effectively boosts the rate capability of Fe 2 (MoO 4 ) 3 . • The FMO-4.25 maintains a high capacity of 74.5 mAh g −1 at 100C. • Even at −20 °C, it retains 65 mAh·g −1 at 1C after 500 cycles. • In-situ EIS tracked interface kinetics evolution and CEI formation. Fe 2 (MoO 4 ) 3 (FMO), a promising polyanionic cathode material for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), offers a stable three-dimensional framework, high operating voltage, and exceptional thermal stability, positioning it as a suitable candidate for large-scale energy storage systems. However, its practical implementation is still hindered by sluggish reaction kinetics. In this study, we address the issues of low electronic conductivity and slow Na + migration in FMO cathode material by an electrospinning-based nano-Synthesis strategy. By precisely regulating the pH of the precursor solution and optimizing the sintering process, the as-prepared FMO-4.25 electrode delivers a high specific capacity of 83.4 mAh·g −1 at 2C after 100 cycles and maintains a discharge capacity of 74.5 mAh·g −1 even at an ultrahigh rate of 100C. Moreover, it exhibits remarkable rate capability and long-term cycling stability even under low-temperature conditions. The electrochemical analysis reveals that the nano structuring of the FMO-4.25 electrode effectively enhances the kinetics of ion diffusion and electron transfer. Furtherover, the nanostructure effectively suppresses volume strain during Na + (de)intercalation, promotes the formation of a stable cathode-electrolyte interphase (CEI), and preserves the integrity of the interfacial and conductive networks, thereby synergistically improving the structural stability of the material. This work provides new insights into the controlled synthesis and mechanistic understanding of high-performance iron molybdate-based cathode materials, offering a valuable reference for advancing the practical application of SIBs in high-power and low-temperature environments. WS2 enhances the Fe2+/Fe3+ cycle in MIL-101(Fe) to promote the activation of peroxymonosulfate for phenol degradation

Huiying Lei,Xuechang Ren,Ning Fu,Gongrong Chen,Yajun Wei,Zhongshan Li,Hongjin Chen,Zerui Lu

To address the low Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ redox cycling efficiency of Fe-based catalysts during peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation, this study successfully constructed a MIL-101(Fe)/WS 2 composite catalytic material. The results show that the MW 1:1 composite exhibits excellent performance toward PMS activation. By leveraging the cooperative effect of dual-metal cycling between Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ and W 4+ /W 6+ , as well as unsaturated sulfur vacancies, it achieves 97% phenol degradation within 60 min, with a reaction constant of 0.1038 min −1 , which is approximately 110 times that of single MIL-101(Fe) and WS 2 . The effects of key operating parameters such as catalyst dosage, PMS concentration, pH value and coexisting anions on phenol degradation efficiency were systematically evaluated. Through in-depth radical quenching experiments and electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy analysis, it was clearly identified that sulfate radical ( SO 4 ∙ − SO4∙− ) and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) were the main active oxide species driving the degradation reaction. Furthermore, this study further elucidated the degradation means of phenol, proclaimed the reaction mechanisation, and evaluated the ecological toxicity of phenol and its intermediate products using the ECOSAR model. This work provides new insights for constructing efficient iron-based catalysts to activate PMS and promoting its application in the control of refractory organic pollutants.

Exploring the Degradation Mechanism of Bisphenol-A with Low Fe2+&H2O2 Content and the Toxicity Evolution of Oxidation Intermediates

Rui Miao,Yanfei Li,Xin Zhang,Haoxue Ran,Yifan Yang,Jinwen Wang,Lei Wang,Xiaorong Meng,Danxi Huang

Efficient and cost-effective removal of emerging contaminants from water bodies has become a global priority. This study assessed the degradation efficiency of bisphenol-A (BPA) at varying Fe 2+ &H 2 O 2 (molar ratio 1:1) concentrations. In addition, the degradation mechanism of BPA by Fe 2+ &H 2 O 2 and the evolution of toxicity in intermediates were examined. The results indicated that, no additional acid is needed, with a Fe 2+ &H 2 O 2 concentration at 0.15 mM and a reaction time of 20 min, and the degradation efficiency of BPA exceeded 90%; this is primarily because the oxidation still occurred when Fe 2+ &H 2 O 2 was added to neutral BPA solutions, possibly leading to the conversion of the active functional groups of BPA into carboxyl groups. The deprotonation of these carboxyl groups provided the acidic conditions necessary for Fenton oxidation, thereby possibly facilitating further degradation of BPA and the formation of more carboxyl-rich intermediates, replenishing acidity for Fenton reactions and promoting continuous oxidation. Moreover, highly toxic intermediates are likely to form during the degradation of BPA at a 0.05-0.1 mM Fe 2+ &H 2 O 2 concentrations, but this tendency decreases substantially with increasing Fe 2+ &H 2 O 2 concentrations. At a Fe 2+ &H 2 O 2 concentration of 0.2 mM, the intermediates were predominantly low-toxicity or even nontoxic. These findings highlight the importance of monitoring toxicity evolution and the conditions favorable for the formation of low-toxic or nontoxic intermediates in the removal of emerging contaminants. To further validate the applicability of this method, p-chloroxylenol (PCMX) and paracetamol (PAM) were also tested under identical conditions, and both showed high degradation efficiencies under neutral pH.

Enhancing the rate capability of Na4Fe3(PO4)2(P2O7) by partial co-substitution of V3+ and Al3+ for Fe2+

shu zhao,浩 李,shuo shi,Chao Wang,Xiu Song Zhao

Sodium iron pyrophosphate (NFPP) is a cost-effective and safe cathode material for sodium-ion batteries (NIBs). However, NFPP suffers from low electron conductivity and sluggish Na+ diffusion kinetics, resulting in a poor rate capability. Here, we show that partial co-substitution of V3+ and Al3+ for Fe2+ synergistically enhances the rate capability of NFPP with improved Na+ storage capacity. The V3+/Al3+ co-substitution narrows the band gap energy of NFPP from 2.99 to 1.53 eV to increase electron conductivity, reduces Na+ diffusion energy barrier from 0.529 eV to 0.398 eV to enhance Na+ diffusivity, leads to the formation of Na vacancies to further facilitate Na+ transport, and improves Na+ storage capacity is because of enhanced electroactivity of the Fe2+/Fe3+ couple. At 0.1, 5 and 10C, the Na+ storage capabilities of the V3+/Al3+ co-substituted NFPP cathode are 120, 85 and 72 mAh g−1, respectively. At 5C, this electrode maintains 81% capacity after 1000 cycles. A full cell fabricated with the co-substituted NFPP as the cathode and a commercial hard carbon (HC) as the anode delivers a Na+ storage capacity of 87 mAh g−1 with 77% capacity retention after 100 cycles at 1C, outperforming a counterpart full cell fabricated with NFPP as the cathode and the anode and electrolyte.

A novel Fe2+/persulfate/tannic acid process with strengthened efficacy on enhancing waste activated sludge dewaterability and mechanism insight

Dongdong Ge,Yanting Dong,Wenrui Zhang,Haiping Yuan,Nanwen Zhu

As an essential section before final sludge disposal, sludge dewatering has currently been one of the focus issues. In this study, an innovative Fe 2+ /persulfate/tannic acid (TA) process was verified to further strengthen systemic efficacy on enhancing sludge dewaterability, compared with the conventional Fe 2+ /persulfate process. With the efficient TA/Fe 2+ (molar ratio) of 0.25 added in Fe 2+ (0.3 mmol/gTS (total solid))/persulfate (0.6 mmol/gTS) process, sludge dewaterability was enhanced remarkably. Capillary suction time, specific resistance to filtration, and water content of dewatered sludge cake were further reduced by 61.5%, 35.3%, and 6.4% than these in Fe 2+ /persulfate. Sludge supernatant viscosity was further reduced by 86.7% due to the more removal of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). The secondary structure of EPS protein changed apparently and fluorescent components of EPS decreased distinctly. Sludge functional group contents were observed to be lower. TA effectually increased sludge particle size and heightened sludge flocculability, rendering the large and compact aggregations. Moreover, TA accelerated the recovery of Fe 2+ , facilitating persulfate activation to generate more SO 4 ·− and · OH for EPS disruption and cell lysis in the conditioning system. These findings provided a novel approach based on the Fe 2+ /persulfate process in sludge treatment for desirable dewaterability.

The roles of suspended solids in persulfate/Fe2+ treatment of hydraulic fracturing wastewater: Synergistic interplay of inherent wastewater components

Di Wang,Yuqing Sun,Daniel C.W. Tsang,Deyi Hou,Eakalak Khan,Daniel S. Alessi,Yaoyu Zhao,Jianyu Gong,Linling Wang

The high content and low removal efficiency of suspended solids (SS) in wastewater derived from shale gas development via hydraulic fracturing has raised advanced treatment problems ( e.g., organics removal) and environmental concerns. In this study, two kinds of suspended solids were separated from synthetic flowback wastewater (FWW) after 1 or 14 days of sedimentation. The physicochemical properties , porous structures, surface chemistry, and particle stability of the obtained 1-/14-day solids were characterized. To illustrate the specific roles of SS during radical-based FWW treatment , the removal of di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP, a typical recalcitrant organic that has been identified in FWW) by a ferrous iron/peroxysulphate (Fe 2+ /PS) system was examined as a representative case. Results showed that DEHP was simultaneously adsorbed onto the solids and degraded by Fe 2+ /PS. The removal processes were governed by the phase distribution of DEHP and Fe 2+ , and the distribution was influenced by interactions between the 1-/14-day solids, Fe 2+ /PS, and various FWW components. Polyacrylamide (PAM), an anionic surfactant commonly detected in FWW, can attach to the solids and aid in maintaining the structural and compositional integrity of the solids. Due to stronger adsorption with PAM, the 14-day solids retained less DEHP and Fe 2+ , contributing to enhanced DEHP degradation in the solution phase as compared to the 1-day solids. Thus, sufficient sedimentation is advantageous for the degradation of recalcitrant organic contaminants ( e.g., DEHP) in FWW treatment. Moreover, certain FWW components ( i.e. , PAM and ethylene glycol) can interact with FWW solids, creating a positive synergistic effect on organic removal efficiency.
