Degradation of bisphenol A in aqueous solution by a novel electro/Fe3+/peroxydisulfate process

Heng Lin,Jie Wu,Hui Zhang

The removal of bisphenol A (BPA) by a novel “electro/Fe 3+ /peroxydisulfate” process is reported in this study. The effects of initial pH, electrolyte concentration, Fe 3+ concentration, peroxydisulfate (PDS) concentration and current density were investigated. The results indicated that the removal efficiency of BPA declined with the increase of initial pH and electrolyte concentration, but increased with an increase of Fe 3+ concentration and current density. The BPA degradation efficiency was improved significantly when the PDS concentration was increased from 1 to 10   mM, but further PDS increase had little effect. BPA was almost completely removed after 60   min reaction and a TOC removal efficiency of 94.3% was achieved when the reaction time was extended to 120   min.

Fluorescence performance and fractal feature of NA-grafted bimodal mesopores silica by Fe3+ modification

Zhenwei Yang,Jihong Sun,Xia Wu,Shiyang Bai,Hamida Panezai

The Fe 3+ -modified 1, 8-naphthalic anhydride (Fe-NA) was prepared, and thereafter successfully grafted on the mesoporous surface of bimodal mesopores material (BMMs) by post-synthesis method. The influence of various parameters, including amount of Fe 3+ ion, various solvents, different concentrations and loadings of FC-NA on the fluorescence behavior of resultant hybrid materials (FC-NA grafted BMMs) was investigated, and then its fluorescence properties were compared to the parent FC-NA. Meanwhile, their structural properties and photoluminescence performances were investigated using various characterizations XRD , TEM , SEM, SAXS , FT-IR, TGA, ICP-OES, elemental analysis , N 2 adsorption-desorption isotherms, and fluorescence measurement. The results showed that the mesoporous structural integrity was remained intact after introduction of FC-NA in the mesoporous channels of APTES-BMMs. Particularly, SAXS patterns revealed the mass fractal dimension of the hybrid FC-NA@BMMs were gradually increased with increasing loaded amount of FC-NA, and resulted in the uneven distribution and self-similarity fractal features. The fluorescence profiles exhibited the occurrence of red-shifts and then blue-shifts of characteristic peak with increasing grafted FC-NA amount. These shifts demonstrated a highly aggregation on the amine-modified mesoporous surface of APTES-BMMs when the obtained mass ratio of FC-NA/AP-BMMs was lower than 0.2, whereas a uniform monodispersion distribution was observed when the mass ratio got higher than 0.2. The obtained functionalized mesoporous materials with enhanced fluorescence intensity have a potential application in drug sustained/controlled delivery systems.

Surface passivation of carbon dots with ethylene glycol and their high-sensitivity to Fe3+

Zhaogan Wang,Peng Long,Yiyu Feng,Chengqun Qin,Wei Feng

Hydroxyl functionalized carbon dots (H-CDs) were prepared by monoesterification of ethylene glycol. The H-CDs exhibit a narrow size distribution of 1–4 nm and enhanced photoluminescent (PL) intensity due to an increased amount of electron donor hydroxyl groups. According to fluorescence spectra, the H-CDs exhibit a high sensitivity to Fe3+ with a detection limit of 2.56 nM, which is superior to the detection limit of CDs (7.4 μM). The quenching fluorescence is primarily controlled by the formation of a chelate compound based on the complexation between Fe3+ and the hydroxyl on the surface of the H-CDs. Furthermore, we demonstrate that paper impregnated with H-CDs exhibits a high sensitivity to Fe3+ by fluorescence quenching. In the future, the modified CDs can be developed for high sensitivity fluorescent probes by optimizing the chemical structures and microstructures.

One-pot green synthesis of highly fluorescent glutathione-stabilized copper nanoclusters for Fe3+ sensing

Hong Huang,Hua Li,Jiu-Ju Feng,Hui Feng,Ai-Jun Wang,Zhaosheng Qian

Herein, we reported a simple one-pot green method for preparation of fluorescent copper nanoclusters (Cu NCs) with a high quantum yield up to 8.6%, using glutathione as the stabilizing agent. The as-prepared Cu NCs had good water solubility, excellent stability and ultrafine size through the characterization of UV–vis absorption spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Experimental results showed that the fluorescence of Cu NCs was linearly quenched by the Fe 3+ concentrations in the range of 1–100   μM, with the detection limit of 0.3   μM. The as-formed Cu NCs were explored for the assay of Fe 3+ in real water samples.

Colorimetric detection of pyrophosphate using gold nanorods and Fe3+ based on anti-etching mechanism

Yiyu Yang,Minjie Peng,Wen Zang,Yu Jiang,Lijing Miao,Chaozhen Wang,Yuenan Zhang,Aiguo Wu,Yujie Zhang

Pyrophosphate (PPi), as a derivative of inorganic phosphate, has important applications in the fields of food and environment, it also plays an important role in biological metabolism and serves as a biomarker for clinical diagnosis of certain diseases. Thus, the development of a simple and convenient method to quantify PPi is of great significance for environmental protection, food safety and disease diagnosis. In this study, visual colorimetric detection of PPi was achieved by inhibiting the morphological change of gold nanorods (Au NRs). In the presence of SCN - , Fe 3+ with low concentration can oxidatively etch Au NRs due to the potential difference, leading to significant color change of Au NRs solutions and blue shift in longitudinal local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) absorption peak of Au NRs solutions. Due to the strong complexation between PPi and Fe 3+ , the etching of Au NRs by Fe 3+ was restrained, while the morphology of Au NRs, the color and UV–vis absorption spectrum of Au NRs solution remained uninfluenced. Under optimal conditions, this colorimetric detection method exhibited exceptional selectivity, anti-interference, and sensitivity towards PPi, with a linear detection range of 0.8–24 μM. Moreover, practical application results suggest that this colorimetric method holds significant potential for swiftly detecting PPi in intricate samples.

Catalase catalyzed tannic acid-Fe3+ network coating: A theranostic strategy for intestinal barrier restoration

Min Fu,Xiao-han Jiang,Min Wang,Zhi-ning Fan,Yu-lin Gu,Rui-han Zou,Li-li Zhao,Li Liu

Epithelial barrier impairment of intestinal inflammation leads to the leakage of bacteria, antigens and consequent persistent immune imbalance. Restoring the barrier function holds promise for management of intestinal inflammation, while the theragnostic strategies are limited. In this study, we developed a novel coating by catalase (CAT)-catalyzed polymerization of tannic acid (TA) and combined chelation network with Fe 3+ . TA-Fe 3+ coating was self-polymerized in situ along the small intestinal mucosa, demonstrating persistent adhesion properties and protective function. In enteritis models, sequential administration of TA-Fe 3+ complex solution effectively restored the barrier function and alleviated the intestinal inflammation. Overexpressed CAT in inflammatory lesion is more favorable for the in situ targeting growth of TA-Fe 3+ coating onto the defective barrier. Based on the high longitudinal relaxivity of Fe 3+ , the pathologically catalyzed coating facilitated the visualization of intestinal barrier impairment through MRI. In conclusion, the novel TA-Fe 3+ delivery coating proposed an alternative approach to promote theranostic intervention for intestinal diseases.

Synthesis and characterization of alternated (humic acid/Fe3 +)n multilayer film on alumina fiber

Guoxin Hu,Bo Tang,Xia Min

By using layer-by-layer self-assembly technology, multilayered films consisting of alternated humic acid and Fe 3   + ions ((HA/Fe 3   + ) n , n   =   10,20,40) were fabricated on alumina fiber (AF) substrate for the first time. FTIR and FESEM results show that the (HA/Fe 3   + ) n thin films were effectively immobilized on the AF surface. The average thickness of a single bi-layer HA/Fe 3   + is not sensitive to the total layers. On the contrary, the concentration of Fe 3   + ions significantly influences this mean thickness. A loose and amorphous structure with some irregular pores was detected from the as-prepared specimens, while relatively smooth surface and denser structure were observed after carbonized at 1000   °C. The large BET surface areas and excellent absorbability of the as-prepared and carbonized samples were found. Moreover, at room temperature, a ferromagnetic property of these samples was revealed by magnetism testing. Due to the adjustable number of layers, the ferromagnetic property is controllable. Therefore, these produces possess potential application as the support material in catalytic and target drug delivery areas.

Synchronization of Ti3C2 MXene/Fe3+ with sodium persulfate for the degradation of reactive dyes

Li Wanxin,Shu Dawu,An Fangfang,Liu Ruigang,Shan Juchuan,Han Bo,Cao Shaolei

Rapid activation of sodium persulfate (SPS) for the degradation of C.I. Reactive Red 218 (RR218) was achieved using Ti 3 C 2 MXene reduction of trace Fe 3+ . The degradation rate of RR218 reached 97.7% using a mixture containing 3 g L −1 of SPS, 3.35 mg L −1 of Fe 3+ and 60 mg L −1 of MXene stirred at 25 °C for 30 min. The intense reduction of Ti 3 C 2 MXene triggers the Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ cycle thereby accelerating the activation of SPS. When reactive dyes were degraded by Fe 3+ /SPS/MXene process, ·OH played a major role. The dye degradation capacity of the Fe 3+ /SPS/MXene process decreased after 5 cycles of recycling. In addition, the wastewater treated under these conditions resulted in high dyeing efficiencies in reuse experiments. This study not only improves the understanding of the catalytic reaction of MXene but also provides a wastewater treatment and reuse process with low metal consumption and high efficiency.

Super Fe3+ competing ability, high biocompatibility, and mild antibacterial carbon dots for food preservation

Fangchao Cui,Rongsen Fan,Dangfeng Wang,Likun Ren,Qianqian Wang,Yuqiong Meng,Rui Ma,Shulin Wang,Zhiteng Liu,Xuepeng Li,Tingting Li,Jianrong Li

Food spoilage caused by bacteria led to about 600 million people suffering from foodborne diseases in 2020, and the diseases kill approximately 400,000 people annually. Traditional food preservatives, antibiotics, and nanomaterials have problems such as high dosage, bacterial resistance, and low biocompatibility. In this study, mild antibacterial carbon dots (TM-CDs) with Fe 3+ nutritional competitiveness were prepared. TM-CDs specifically chelated Fe 3+ and formed Fe-O. The maximum chelating capacity of TM-CDs for Fe 3+ was 154.56 mg mL −1 . TM-CDs exhibited a much stronger chelating ability for Fe 3+ than traditional iron chelators and even siderophores secreted by Pseudomonas fragi . The minimum inhibitory concentration of TM-CDs against Pseudomonas fragi was 0.25 mg mL −1 . The antibacterial mechanism of TM-CDs was the existence of Fe 3+ competition between TM-CDs and siderophores secreted by Pseudomonas fragi , which ultimately led to the death of Pseudomonas fragi due to iron deficiency. Notably, no obvious cytotoxicity of TM CDs was observed. In addition, the experimental results of freshness showed that TM-CDs effectively prolonged the shelf-life of salmon by 3–4 d. Therefore, this study provides insight into developing a competitive approach to depriving bacteria of nutrients for antibacterial purposes, with potential applications in seafood storage and preservation.

Ratiometric fluorescence nanoprobe based on nitrogen-doped carbon dots for Cu2+ and Fe3+ detection

Yang Chunlei,Xu Guiju,Hou Chenghao,Zhang Hongwei

Heavy metal ions pollution in environmental waters has an increasing impact on human health. As two common metal ions, copper ions (Cu 2+ ) and ferric ions (Fe 3+ ) widely exist in nature and play a vital role in life process. Therefore, it is significant to design sensitive and simple detection approaches for Cu 2+ and Fe 3+ . In our work, the ratiometric fluorescence analysis method (denoted as N-CDs/OPD) was established for Cu 2+ and Fe 3+ detection. The N-CDs exhibited a Cu 2+ and Fe 3+ fluorescence quenching response properties. The o-phenylenediamine (OPD) may be oxidized to 2,3-diaminophenazine (DAP) by Cu 2+ and Fe 3+ . With addition of Cu 2+ or Fe 3+ , the fluorescence of N-CDs (436 nm) was quenched and a new peak at 556 nm (DAP) appeared, which realized fluorescent ratiometric detection of Cu 2+ and Fe 3+ . The Cu 2+ concentration shows a good linear correlation versus fluorescence ratio (F 436 /F 556 ) in the range of 10 to 30 µM (R 2  = 0.9981) with detection limit (LOD) of 0.86 µM. In addition, a good linear relationship between fluorescence ratio (F 436 /F 556 ) and Fe 3+ concentration in the range of 20 to 80 µM (R 2  = 0.9880) with LOD of 7.12 µM. This nanoprobe realizes the detection of authentic samples successfully, which is expected to serve as a testing kit for analysis in water samples.

Sensitive and selective chemosensor for Fe3+ detection using carbon dots synthesized by microwave method

Xiang Deng,Huan Yang,An-Jie Gong,Xiao-Mei Huang,Lu Li

The excessive accumulation of heavy metal ions can pose significant hazards to human health and the environment, hence the detection and removal of heavy metal ions from water bodies are essential. Generally, carbon dots (CDs) are used as a good fluorescence sensor to sense heavy metal ions. In this study, using one-step microwave method, CDs were synthesized with the traditional Chinese medicine Radix Vladimiriae as a carbon source for the first time. These CDs display excellent fluorescence properties with an average particle size of approximately 5.9 nm and a fluorescence quantum yield (QY) about 0.15. The fluorescence emission spectra were recorded at different excitation peaks with the highest intensity emission peak observed at 465 nm with an excitation wavelength of 360 nm. Interestingly, fluorescence intensities of CDs greatly decreased in the existence of Fe 3+ . Under optimum conditions, a good linear relationship was observed between ( I 0 - I )/ I and the Fe 3+ concentration in the range of 0.2–200 μM with the correlation coefficient ( R 2 ) of 0.9992 and the limit of detection (LOD) of 62 nM. Finally, after adding Fe 3+ at concentrations of 5 μM, 20 μM, and 50 μM to real water samples, the relative standard deviation and spiked recovery rates were 1.2 %-2.7 % and 99.2 %-101.6 %, respectively. Thus, a novel method for rapid detection of Fe 3+ were successfully discovered.

Synergistic mechanism of isolated Fe3+ and highly dispersed Ptδ+ over zeolite for boosting propane dehydrogenation

Ying Zhang,Xiaofang Wang,Huihui Deng,Qin Sun,Baozhen Li,Wenchun Zheng,Zhuangzhuang Ren,Xiangqing Fang,Li Tan,Yu Tang,Lizhi Wu

Pt-based catalysts have been widely investigated in propane dehydrogenation (PDH) owing to their high activity in C  H activation, while it suffers from Pt sintering and coke deposition. We develop a transition metal Fe and zeolite support synergistic-modified method to realize the highly dispersed and stable Pt species inside zeolite over Pt/Fe-silicate-1. And it shows the excellent PDH performance with propylene generation rate of 51.6 mol C 3 H 6 g Pt −1 h −1 and low deactivation rate constant k d of 0.017 h −1 as well as a high TOF Pt of 37.6 s −1 at 550°C. The systematic characterizations reveal the isolated Fe 3+ species could significantly improve Pt dispersity and regulate Pt electronic density to realize a more positive Pt δ+ species inside Silicalite-1 pore. And the further in situ DRIFTS experiments demonstrate that the synergistic effect between the appropriate acidic Fe sites and the highly dispersed Pt δ+ species around Fe species are responsible for the superior PDH performance.
