Nitrogen-Doped Graphene with Enhanced Room Temperature NH3 Gas Sensing Properties

Qingwu Huang,Peng Zhou,Wulin Song,Jinjin Wu

Herein, nitrogen-doped wrinkled multilayer graphene sheets (N-doped graphene) are synthesized via a facile solvothermal route followed by NH3atmosphere annealing at different temperatures. Systematic characterization by SEM, XRD, FTIR, Raman, and XPS confirms the successful incorporation of nitrogen with tunable configurations, i.e., pyridinic N, pyrrolic N, and graphitic N, whose relative fractions are strongly dependent on annealing temperature. Room-temperature gas sensing tests toward NH3reveal that the G-600 (N-doped graphene annealed at 600 °C) sensor exhibits the highest response (4.76 toward 300 ppm NH3), about 7.8 times that of G-400 (a counterpart sample thermally treated at 400 °C), along with excellent selectivity, reproducibility, and stability. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate that pyridinic N provides the strongest adsorption affinity for NH3and the largest charge transfer, whereas graphitic N ensures superior electrical conductivity. The optimal performance of G-600 arises from a synergistic effect between abundant pyridinic N active sites for enhanced NH3adsorption and sufficient graphitic N for efficient charge transport. This work not only elucidates the mechanism of nitrogen-configuration-governed sensing behavior but also offers a rational strategy for designing high-performance room-temperature NH3sensors based on N-doped graphene.

PEI-coated MWCNTs Incorporating Polyimide Membrane for High Efficient Gas Separation

Shan Chao,Liu Zhongying,Wu Shanshan,Qu Junjie,Mo Junhao,Sun Xiaoyi,Liu Chanjuan,Huang Xiaohua

In this work, polyethyleneimine (PEI)-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (PEI@MWCNTs) were synthesized by coating pristine MWCNTs with PEI. Subsequently, mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) containing various loadings of PEI@MWCNTs were fabricated by incorporating the aminated nanotubes into FFBA (a fluorinated copolyimide, synthesized from 6FDA, FPPAB, and BAMF) matrix. This modification strategy takes advantage of the low-diffusion-resistance tubular structure of MWCNTs to facilitate gas transport, while the abundant amino groups of PEI serve as active sites for CO 2 molecules. The PEI@MWCNTs/FFBA MMMs exhibited superior thermal stability compared with the pristine FFBA membrane. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis revealed that the incorporation of carbon nanotubes expanded the interchain spacing within the PI matrix, thereby increasing the free volume of the membrane. Gas permeation tests showed that, at a PEI@MWCNTs loading of 3 wt%, the CO 2 permeability increased by 74%, while the CO 2 /N 2 selectivity improved by 46%. These results indicate that the incorporation of PEI@MWCNTs enables simultaneous improvements in both gas permeability and selectivity, thus mitigating the conventional permeability–selectivity trade-off typically observed in polymer membranes. This work offers a novel and effective strategy to enhance interfacial interactions between dispersed nanomaterials and the PI matrix, showing great promise for practical gas separation applications.

The synthesis and evaluation of two new gas hydrate kinetic inhibitors

Huang Liu,Minghao Liu,Jianfen Du,Qingping Li,Ping Guo,Yanghui Liu

Gas hydrate plugging is a common yet hazardous problem during oil and gas reservoir exploitation, compelling the petroleum industry to invest substantial resources annually in mitigation strategies. Two novel hydrate kinetic inhibitors (HKIs), a PVP derivative (PVP-DP) and a PVCap derivative (PVCap-DP), were synthesized and systematically evaluated. Structural characterization by FT-IR, NMR, and TG analyses confirmed increased molecular weights and the introduction of additional polar functional groups relative to the present polymers. In pure water at a subcooling temperature of 6.2 K and a concentration (C p ) of 1 wt%, the methane hydrate induction times ( I h ) for PVP-DP and PVCap-DP were 358 min and 395 min, respectively. These values significantly exceed those observed in distilled water (23 min) and in systems containing commercial HKIs, such as PVP (138 min) and VC-713 (272 min). Increasing C p to 3 wt% further prolonged I h to 911 min and 964 min, respectively. Even at a higher subcooling of 8.4 K, I h remained considerable at 126 min and 158 min, demonstrating sustained inhibition under more severe thermodynamic driving forces. Synergistic effects were observed when HKIs (3 wt%) were combined with glycol (1 wt%), resulting in I h values of 230 min and 268 min. Increasing the glycol concentration to 3 wt% maintained a strong inhibition performance, with I h values of 211 min and 238 min even at a subcooling of 9 K. In addition, both derivatives exhibited effective inhibition in water/diesel emulsion systems. At 6.2 K subcooling, the PVP-DP (3 wt%)–water/diesel emulsion system achieved an I h of 404 min, which was markedly longer than that of the uninhibited water/diesel emulsion (51 min), although the emulsion phase moderately reduced the inhibitor efficiency. Overall, PVP-DP and PVCap-DP demonstrate strong kinetic inhibition performance against the formation of natural gas hydrate in both aqueous and emulsion systems, indicating promising application potential in complex production environments.

Intelligent Optimization of Gas-Assisted Electrospinning via LLM-Guided Bayesian Inference

Jun Zeng,Rongguang Zhang,Weicheng Ou,Xuanzhi Zhang,Shize Huang,Xun Chen,Guojie Xu

Nanofiber-based structures have shown considerable potential in semiconductor-related applications, including ultra-thin dielectric layers and flexible electronic devices, owing to their tunable micro-/nanoscale morphology. However, the manufacturing of these structures is often hindered by the complex multiparameter coupling and poor reproducibility inherent in conventional electrospinning processes. To address these challenges, this study develops an intelligent optimization framework for gas-assisted electrospinning by integrating Large Language Models (LLMs) with Bayesian Optimization (BO). A Gaussian Process Regression (GPR) surrogate model was established to navigate the high-dimensional parameter space efficiently. Comparative studies demonstrate that the proposed BO+LLM strategy not only outperforms pure data-driven BO and pure knowledge-driven LLM approaches but also surpasses the conventional Response Surface Methodology (RSM) baseline, successfully locating a verified minimum fiber diameter of 239 nm. Furthermore, through response-surface analysis, this work identifies a specific multiphysics collaborative window where electrostatic stretching and aerodynamic assistance are balanced. These findings provide a robust pathway for the reproducible fabrication of nanofiber-based electronic devices.

Porous CoFe2O4/WO3/Ag composite for high-performance triethylamine gas sensor

Zhipeng Wang,Xiaojie Zhu,Weixiang Gao,Yuliang Zhang,Junfeng Li,Yingchang Jiang,Xueting Chang,Shibin Sun

Spinel ferrites with a general formula of AFe 2 O 4 (A=Zn, Mn, Ni, or Co) have attracted considerable attention in chemiresistive gas sensors, given their superior chemical stability and good catalytic activity. However, the development of spinel ferrite-based gas sensors that simultaneously possess high selectivity and excellent humidity resistance has so far remained challenging. Herein, we successfully fabricated a novel CoFe 2 O 4 /WO 3 /Ag (CWA) composite by depositing the WO 3 nanosheets and Ag nanoparticles successively onto the porous CoFe 2 O 4 (CFO) nanosheets that were obtained through co-precipitation, calcination, and in-situ reduction methods. Due to the unique porous layered structures of the CFO nanosheets, the formation of p-n heterojunctions between the CFO and WO 3 nanosheets, and the catalytic effects of the Ag nanoparticles, the CWA composite-based gas sensor exhibited distinct selectivity (at least 4 times enhanced sensitivity), wide detection range (0.1∼500 ppm) reproducibility (RSD=1.3% in 5 independent batches), stability (maximum 4.4% fluctuation over 56 days), and humidity resistance (>60.7% response retention at 90% RH) towards triethylamine (TEA). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further proved the intense TEA chemisorption on the Fe sites and the indispensable role of Ag in electron mobility modulation. In addition, a practical gas-sensing system was also developed to demonstrate its real-world implementation. This study provided a general strategy for constructing spinel ferrite-based gas sensors that could work in high-humidity environments.

Moisture-Tolerant Sulfide Solid Electrolytes Enabled by Gas-Phase Surface Engineering

Gu Run,Gui Jingjing,Yang Linlin,Qi Meizhou,Gao Lei,Bi Wentuan

Sulfide solid electrolytes are pivotal for the advancement of all-solid-state lithium batteries due to their superior ionic conductivity and mechanical ductility. However, their commercialization is severely hindered by inherent moisture sensitivity, which leads to structural degradation and hazardous H 2 S gas generation. Addressing this challenge without compromising ionic conductivity remains a significant hurdle. Herein, we develop a gas-phase surface-engineering strategy for in situ doping that simultaneously enhances the moisture tolerance and electrochemical performance of commercial solid-state electrolytes. Using low-melting-point BiBr 3 as a volatile doping precursor, Bi and Br are uniformly incorporated into commercial Li 6 PS 5 Cl (LPSCl) particles through a sealed heat treatment at 500 ° C. The volatilization of BiBr 3 promotes homogeneous gas–solid contact and reaction, yielding Bi/Br- co -doped LPSCl with substantially improved resistance to moisture-induced degradation. All-solid-state lithium batteries (ASSLBs) employing this electrolyte exhibit markedly improved rate capability and more stable cycling performance compared to ASSLBs using pristine LPSCl. This work provides a facile and effective pathway to simultaneously achieve high moisture tolerance and excellent electrochemical performance in sulfide solid electrolytes.

PDMS Regulated Growth of Cyclodextrin Polyester Membranes for Natural Gas Dehydration

Junfeng Zheng,Chuanrong Liu,Zixue Zhao,Tianyi Zhou,Yikai Wang,Zhongde Dai

Abstract Membrane separation is an energy-efficient route for natural gas dehydration, but achieving high water permeance, H2O/CH4 selectivity, and humid-state stability remains challenging. Here, a PDMS-mediated interfacial polymerization strategy was developed to construct ultrathin cyclodextrin-derived polyester selective layers on PES supports. The PDMS interlayer sealed surface pores, regulated monomer diffusion, and enabled the formation of a continuous selective layer of approximately 70 nm. Among α-, β-, and γ-cyclodextrin membranes, the β-CD/TMC membrane showed the best performance, reaching an H2O permeance of 76,423 GPU and an H2O/CH4 selectivity of 78,602. Its superior performance results from the balanced cavity size, hydrophilic oxygen-containing groups, and low transport resistance of the cross-linked polyester layer. The membrane also maintained stable separation under highly humid conditions for 7 days, demonstrating the effectiveness of PDMS-regulated cyclodextrin polyester membranes for natural gas dehydration.

TEA gas sensor based on MoV2O8 nanorods for seafood spoilage detection

Yao Wang,Zhihua Zhao

Amine gases have become essential indicators for assessing seafood spoilage, with triethylamine (TEA) standing out due to its close association with the decay process. Effective detection of TEA in complex environments is therefore crucial. However, current TEA sensors often suffer from limitations such as low sensitivity, poor selectivity, or the need for high operating temperatures. In this work, a highly efficient TEA gas sensor which based on MoV 2 O 8 was successfully fabricated through hydrothermal reaction and assisted calcination. Gas sensing tests demonstrated a response of 2.63 towards 100 ppm TEA at the optimal working temperature of 160 ℃, exhibited good linearity at low TEA concentrations. Additionally, experimental results confirmed that the sensor possesses excellent selectivity, reproducibility, and stability. The gas sensing mechanism was further analyzed in depth. Finally, a TEA detection device based on MoV 2 O 8 was designed to detect TEA emissions from decayed marine fish.

Highly sensitive NO2 gas sensor based on VS2/Ti3C2Tx/TiO2 nanocomposites

Zhihua Zhao,Jingzhao Tian,Xiaobei Xu,Chunhua Zheng,Lan Wu

Elevated concentrations of nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) pose detrimental effects on the environment, contributing to pollution in water bodies, soil, and the atmosphere. Moreover, NO 2 , being a potent oxidant, can directly impinge upon the respiratory system, precipitating a range of pulmonary illnesses. Consequently, rigorous surveillance and assessment of NO 2 emissions are of paramount importance for safeguarding environmental integrity and public health. To address this challenge, we fabricated a NO 2 gas sensor using VS 2 /Ti 3 C 2 T x /TiO 2 nanocomposites. The sensors were thoroughly characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). In our tests, the M/v-2 sensor showed excellent performance, with a response of 4.73 at 180 °C to 50 ppm NO 2 , which is 2.5 times that of the Ti 3 C 2 T x /TiO 2 sensor. Additionally, its response time was short (26 s), the recovery time was even shorter than the response time (15 s), and it demonstrated a high response speed to low concentrations of NO 2 (≤10 ppm). Furthermore, the long-term stability was excellent over a period of 45 days. The gathered characteristics indicate that our VS 2 /Ti 3 C 2 T x /TiO 2 gas sensor has great potential for NO 2 detection.

Ultrasensitive Room-Temperature NO2 Gas Sensor Based on MXene–Cu2O Composites

Wenbin Ren,Jinfeng Luan,Liang Yin,Huijuan Chen,Changchun Wang,Pinhua Zhang,Guangliang Cui,Li Lv

The development of real-time trace-level NO2 quantification platforms that can be operated at room temperature constitutes a critical advancement for occupational safety and public health monitoring systems. This study demonstrates a room-temperature NO2 sensor using MXene–Cu2O composites prepared via a hydrothermal method. Systematic evaluation of MXene-introduced effects identified the 0.84 wt % MXene–Cu2O composite as optimal, exhibiting 4-fold enhanced sensitivity and shorter response (55 s)/recovery (35 s) time compared to pure Cu2O. Additionally, the sensor exhibits a low detection limit (10 ppb), high selectivity, great reversibility, and long-term stability. The enhanced sensing performance originates from precisely engineered interfacial architectures between MXene and Cu2O, which effectively adjust the charge-transfer behavior through the conduction tunnel in the sensing material. Furthermore, oxygen vacancy engineering creates defect-mediated adsorption centers that promote selective NO2 chemisorption through charge polarization effects. This research offers a novel strategy for designing optimized structures to enhance the sensitivity of MOS-based materials for NO2 gas detection.

High efficiency triethylamine gas sensor based on SmVO4 nano octahedron granules

Cheng Yu Xu,Shu Yi Ma,Tian Yuan Dong,Ji Ming Liu,Jin Sha Wei,Hong Tao Jiang,Ping Ni,Ge Ge Fan,Jia Yun Guo

Triethylamine (TEA) is typical hazardous volatile organic gas (VOCs), it is particularly important for us to effectively detect triethylamine in complex places. In this work, high efficiency triethylamine gas sensor based on SmVO 4 was successfully obtained by means of hydrothermal reaction and assisted calcination. Characterization of analytical materials, SmVO 4 octahedral nanoparticles formed clusters similar to pomegranate fruits. There is a trace +4 valence state of vanadium in the material, which contributes to the oxidation-reduction reaction between the target gas and the surface of the material. Gas sensitive test results found that the SmVO 4 sensor still has a 2.45 response to the target gas (triethylamine) at low concentrations (1 ppm). SmVO 4 shows excellent selectivity for triethylamine, with a response value more than three times that of other gases. In 25 days, it shows excellent stability and fast response recovery time (15 s/40 s). In addition, the gas sensing mechanism is analyzed.

Gas–liquid two-phase bubble flow spinning for hydrovoltaic flexible electronics

Cao Yuanming,Tan Ji,Sun Tingting,Deng Yechuan,Zhang Min,Guan Shiwei,Zhang Xianming,Wei Chao,Huo Panpan,Zhuo Mingpeng,Zhu Hongqin,Qiu Jiajun,Liu Xuanyong

Hydrovoltaic technologies that generate electricity by absorbing or transferring free water without chemical reactions have been explored as potential candidates for renewable energy. Self-powered flexible sensors, including hydrovoltaic fibers, are becoming an important research direction in the field of renewable energy. However, integrating sensing and power generation in functional fibers remains challenging due to the need to regulate water movement to achieve performance differences. Here, we present a gas-liquid two-phase flow spinning method, inspired by spider multimodal spinning, that uses bubble-triggered spinning-liquid deformation to fabricate hollow, solid spindle, and ratchet tooth-shaped fibers. These structures alter water adsorption and transfer behaviors, making them suitable for targeted applications in hydrovoltaic devices for energy and sensing fields. Shaped fibers prepared from alginate-bridged MoS₂ enable a wide range of hydrovoltaic applications. The obtained fiber has a power density of 2.18 mW/cm 3 , stable operation at 2.1 V for 43 hours, and sensitivity of 9.36 mV/RH%/s, leading to the development of smart masks for nasal cycle monitoring, diagnosis, and therapy as potential applications. Spinning materials were extended to materials such as carboxymethyl cellulose, polyvinyl alcohol, etc., inspiring the design of structure-responsive hydroelectric materials and advancing textile electronics.
