Electronic modulation with Ru nanoclusters decorated CoP nanowire arrays for alkaline and acidic hydrogen evolution reaction

Dongfeng Sun,Pengpeng Qiang,Yuan Yu,Jingyun Zhang,Linyin Huang,Yanning Qu,Qingmei Su,Bingshe Xu

In this study, we meticulously prepared electrocatalysts in the form of Ru nanoclusters-decorated CoP nanowire arrays supported on carbon cloth (Ru@CoP/CC) for HER under both alkaline and acidic conditions. Ru@CoP/CC exhibited exceptional catalytic activity for hydrogen evolution, showcasing overpotentials of 48 mV and 66 mV (10 mA/cm 2 ) in acidic and alkaline media, respectively, which closes to 20% of commercial Pt/C catalysts. Moreover, they showcased outstanding durability, a crucial aspect for their practical application in hydrogen production. Furthermore, this research employed DFT computations to attain a comprehensive understanding of the electronic and structural modifications brought about by the integration of Ru nanoclusters. Ru nanoclusters could coordination environment of CoP, and then effectively accelerate the catalytic reaction. This method opens up a new way to reduce the amount of precious metals in the electrocatalyst, and is helpful to the development of high-performance HER electrocatalyst.

Optimizing hydrogen adsorption via Mo-doped Ni3S2 nanoparticles anchored on Ni–N–C framework as an efficent electrocatalyst for all-pH hydrogen evolution

Conghan Zhang,Jiating Cheng,Fan Yang,Yang Sun,Xinyang Sun,Kexin Wei,Guang Ma,Junpu An,Meitong Zhao,Jiahui Liu,Yongfeng Li

Electrolytic water splitting using transition metal sulfide catalysts has garnered a lot of attention lately. Herein, a composite material consisting of Mo-doped Ni 3 S 2 nanoparticles supported on N-doped carbon layers with anchored Ni single atoms (Mo–Ni 3 S 2 /Ni–N–C) was synthesized using a two-step hydrothermal process. These features enable Mo–Ni 3 S 2 /Ni–N–C to achieve low overpotentials of 71, 58, and 89 mV for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) at 10 mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH, 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 , and 1 M PBS, respectively. After 20 h of durability testing, its current density retains over 95 % of the initial value across diverse pH electrolytes. Mo doping enhances structural stability, enabling wide pH applicability. Electron transfer from Ni 3 S 2 nanoparticles to Ni single atoms accelerates kinetics and boosts intrinsic activity, which improves HER performance. Theoretical calculations confirm that Ni single atoms possess ideal H∗ adsorption energy, which optimizes H∗ adsorption capability of Ni 3 S 2 . This work offers suggestions for creating excellent low-cost electrolytic water catalysts.

Boosting electrochemical nitrogen fixation by mesoporous Rh film with boron and sulfur co-doping

H. Yu,Z. Wang,W. Tian,Z. Dai,Y. Xu,X. Li,L. Wang,H. Wang

Electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) has been regarded as one of the most promising alternative strategies for nitrogen fixation, and the design of efficient NRR catalysts is the critical factor. Herein, boron and sulfur co-doped mesoporous Rh film on Ni foam (B, S-mRh/NF) is developed for electrochemical ammonia synthesis. The boron and sulfur co-doping, the B, S-mRh/NF, can inhibit competitive hydrogen evolution reaction  effectively. Owing to binder-free mesoporous structures, binder-free characteristic, and multicomponent alloy, the B, S-mRh/NF displays a high NH 3 yield of 11.88 μg/h/cm 2 at −0.1 V and Faraday efficiency of 38.42% at −0.05 V in neutral electrolyte. This work offers an effective strategy for the rational design of nonmetal-doped porous Rh electrocatalysts with self-supported structure, which would be highly potential for the electrochemical ammonia synthesis.

Designed Synthesis of Size-Controlled Pt?Cu Alloy Nanoparticles Encapsulated in Carbon Nanofibers and Their High Efficient Electrocatalytic Activity Toward Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Juan Wang,Jia Wei Chen,Jia Dong Chen,Han Zhu,Ming Zhang,Ming Liang Du

Well-dispersed Pt  Cu alloy nanoparticles (NPs) with a diameter of only ≈2 nm encapsulated in carbon nanofibers (CNFs) are synthesized using electrospinning technology followed by a graphitization process in a chemical vapor deposition furnace. Distinctly, even with a small amount of Pt, the Pt  Cu/CNFs-1:2 catalyst possesses outstanding hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity, including small overpotential, long-term stability, and a high exchange current density as well as large double layer capacitance ( C dl ). The excellent HER performance of the Pt  Cu/CNFs-1:2 catalyst is attributed to the synergistic interaction between Pt and Cu, the uniform distribution of the alloy NPs and the use of CNFs with 3D architectures. This development may provide a simple, efficient, and green synthesis method to design bi- or multimetal alloys for use as the cathode electrocatalysts for the HER or other electrocatalytic devices.

Low loading of Pt on MoB Constructed by microwave Quasi-solid approach with solvent Regulation for hydrogen evolution reaction

Chengfeng Wang,Hongdong Li,Weiping Xiao,Zhenyu Xiao,Guangrui Xu,Dehong Chen,Zexing Wu,Lei Wang

The interaction between metal nanoclusters and the carrier can enhance the electron transfer rate to optimize the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance, but the common synthesis approaches often lead to metal particle agglomeration, and then blocking active sites. Herein, highly-dispersed Pt nanoclusters supported onto molybdenum boride (MoB) is developed through microwave approach with various solvent to regulate the catalytic performance. The synthesized electrocatalyst with the addition of methanol (Pt/MoB-M) exhibits excellent electrocatalytic performance towards HER with low overpotential (13 mV at 10 mA cm −2 ), small Tafel slope (24 mV dec −1 ), and high mass activity (10.06 A/mg Pt at 50 mV). This work presents a novel approach to prepare highly-efficient electrocatalysts for renewable energy-related applications of non-carbon supported low loading of precious metals.

Ru-triggered domino effect constructs a local acid-like environment to achieve the ampere-level current density of a/c-Ru-FeP/IF electrode for alkaline HER

Jie Liu,Xiaoli Sun,Yunmei Du,Yanru Liu,Wenna Wang,Dehong Chen,Ruiyong Zhang,Lei Wang

Because of the huge energy consumption required to drive the Volmer step, the reaction efficiency of alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is usually 2–3 orders of magnitude lower than that of acidic HER. Therefore, overcoming the weakness of alkaline HER from the perspective of reaction kinetics is the core of electrode design. Density functional theory (DFT) illustrates that Ru dopants trigger the domino effect of electrodes. Ru induces electron redistribution of Fe@a/c-interface, increasing H 2 O adsorption and O-H bonds length. The longer O-H bonds promote the transfer of dissociated H to Ru@a/c-interface, thereby establishing a locally acid-like environment and efficient Volmer-Tafel mechanism in KOH. As expected, the well-designed a/c-Ru-FeP/IF obtains 1 A cm −2 at only 189 mV for alkaline HER. Overall, this work provides a new idea for optimizing the local reaction environment and reaction kinetics in alkaline HER by introducing a single element to trigger the domino effect of the electrode.

Anionic phosphorous and sulfur regulate self-supported Ni-Fe-based electrocatalyst for water-splitting under large current density

Silu Liu,Yue Wang,Jinxiao Gao,Wei Jin,Weiping Xiao,Liantao Xin,Zhenyu Xiao,Guangrui Xu,Chunlong Dai,Huadong Zhang,Zexing Wu,Lei Wang

Nickel-iron based (Ni-Fe) catalysts are widely used in the electrolysis of water due to their high activity and low cost. However, the development of highly active non-precious metal catalysts is still a great challenge. Herein, self-supported nickel–iron phosphide is fabricated through a sulfurization/phosphorization approach (Ni-Fe-P-S-1/Ni-Fe-P-S-2). The prepared catalysts show excellent catalytic performance and stability. The HER performance of Ni-Fe-P-S-1 reaches 500 mA cm −2 with small overpotentials of 289 mV in alkaline freshwater. Meanwhile, the Ni-Fe-P-S-2 requires 312 and 375 mV to reach 500 mA cm −2 in alkaline freshwater and alkaline seawater for OER. Remarkably, at the current density of 500 mA cm −2 , the Ni-Fe-P-S-1||Ni-Fe-P-S-2 electrolyzer requires only 1.85 V in alkaline. Interestingly, sustainable energies can power the electrolyzer effectively. The work provides methods for potentially promising and cost-effective electrocatalysts.

Alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction catalyzed by atomically dispersed ruthenium on phosphorus-nitrogen co-doped porous carbon

Sanchuan Liu,Longyun Shen,Yujun Tang,Chengyu Guo,Francesco Ciucci,Zhenghua Tang

Exploring high-efficiency catalyst toward hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) for sustainable hydrogen production is critical for building a forthcoming hydrogen economy. Atomically dispersed catalysts have shown great promises for catalyzing HER yet further fine-tuning the coordination chemical environment to boost the performance is still challenging. Herein, we report the synthesis and electrocatalytic HER application of Ru single atoms dispersed in P, N co-doped porous carbon (Ru SAs@PNC). Spherical aberration corrected scanning transmission electron microscope (AC-STEM) analysis revealed the formation of atomically dispersed Ru single atoms. The as-prepared Ru SAs@PNC catalyst showed excellent HER activity in 1 M KOH, evidenced by a small overpotential of 21 mV @ 10 mA cm −2 and a low Tafel slope of 31 mV dec −1 , both of which are comparable to the Pt/C benchmark catalyst. It also exhibited great durability for long-time operation, as demonstrated by negligible overpotential increase in the 50 h E -t test, and outperformed stability in the accelerated durability test. Such excellent HER performance is mainly attributed to the N, P co-doped chemical coordination environment that differs from most widely reported solely nitrogen-coordinated Ru single atoms.

Hierarchical CuO@Ni/NiO nanoarchitectures with dual synergistic effects for industrial high-current-density hydrogen evolution

Feng Chen,Junshuang Zhou,Wenfeng Peng,Xiaowen Feng,Zikang Zhao,Yubin Yuan,Tianshuo Wang,Faming Gao

The development of efficient and durable non-precious metal catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) remains a significant challenge. In this work, we present a novel approach combining heterojunction and structural engineering to enhance HER performance. A NiO/Ni layer with a heterogeneous structure is grown on CuO nanorod arrays supported by copper foam. This 3D nanostructure increases the density of active sites, improves mass and electron transport, and accelerates HER kinetics. The rough surface also facilitates rapid bubble release, enhancing catalyst stability under high currents. As a result, the CuO@NiO/Ni catalyst exhibits excellent HER performance, with overpotentials of 86.5 and 198.8 mV at 100 and 500 mA cm −2 , respectively. Additionally, a two-electrode electrolytic cell using CuO@NiO/Ni and NiFe LDH achieves 500 mA cm −2 at only 1.64 V and maintains excellent stability over 100 h. These findings highlight the potential of CuO@NiO/Ni as a highly efficient, stable catalyst for industrial-scale water electrolysis, and provide a promising approach to addressing the challenges of non-precious metal-based HER catalysts in industrial settings.

Chitin-derived porous carbon loaded with Co, N and S with enhanced performance towards electrocatalytic oxygen reduction, oxygen evolution, and hydrogen evolution reactions

Jiaxiang Chen,Lei Qiu,Zheling Li,Guanhui Gao,Wenhua Zhong,Peixin Zhang,Yongji Gong,Libo Deng

Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) are the rate-controlling and/or energy-intensive reactions of numerous energy conversion and storage devices. It is a great challenge to attain a high catalytic efficiency with a single electrocatalyst towards these reactions simultaneously. Herein, a porous carbon was prepared by pyrolysis of chitin with the assistance of CoCl 2 and ZnCl 2 and a subsequent sulfurization process, which resulted in uniform loading of Co, N and S elements. The porous and modified carbon exhibited high catalytic performance towards ORR, OER and HER. Furthermore, the catalyst was used as air electrode to construct Zn-air batteries, which showed a power of 142 mW cm −2 and discharging and charging voltages of 1.3 V and 1.74 V at 1 mA cm −2 after 100 cycles, respectively. When used as both the anode and cathode for water splitting, the voltage to achieve a 10 mA cm −2 electrolysis current was 1.58 V which was stable over 75 h of operation. The performance enhancement is attributed to the etching effect which generates defects in both carbonaceous matrix and the Co 9 S 8 crystallites during the sulfurization , as well as the doping of S and N elements which creates multiple active sites.

A confinement strategy for stabilizing two-dimensional carbon / CoP hybrids with enhanced hydrogen evolution

Yue Lai,Wei Xia,Jingjing Li,Junjie Pan,Cheng Jiang,Zexing Cai,Chao Wu,Xianli Huang,Tao Wang,Jianping He

Two-dimensional carbon/CoP hybrids catalysts usually exhibit extraordinary performance especially in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) application because of their unique morphology which bring unique physical and chemical properties. Although Co-doped zeolitic imidazolate framework nanoleaf (Co-ZIF-L) is quite attractive as carbon-based catalyst precursor, carbonization and phosphorization processes would normally induce Co-ZIF-L derived CoP/N-doped carbon (CoP-NC) catalyst to occur structural collapse due to the shrinkage stress and strong reducibility of PH 3 , seriously restricting the structural advantage of these catalysts. To this end, a carbon-shell confinement strategy by polydopamine (PDA) is developed to improve the structural stability of these catalysts. The precursor that Co-ZIF-L coated with PDA (Co-ZIF-L@PDA) has a more stable structure, which makes the electrocatalyst CoP-NC possess componential advantage and the merits of two-dimensional structure. The resultant CoP-NC exhibits enhanced activity and good stability for pH-universal HER. The overpotentials of CoP-NC at the current density of 10 mA cm −2 are 145 mV in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 solution and 167 mV in 1 M KOH solution. Additionally, the electrocatalyst CoP-NC displays comparable activity and stability for HER in neutral media as well.

Interstitial Hydrogen Atom Modulation to Boost Hydrogen Evolution in Pd-Based Alloy Nanoparticles

Jinchang Fan,Xiaoqiang Cui,Shansheng Yu,Lin Gu,Qinghua Zhang,Fanqi Meng,Zhangquan Peng,Lipo Ma,Jing-Yuan Ma,Kun Qi,Qiaoliang Bao,Weitao Zheng

Rational control of the components of noble metal alloys is paramount for achieving satisfactory electrocatalytic performances. Though transition metals are commonly used to modify noble metals, many potential elements remain to be explored. Here, we interstitially modulate hydrogen atoms into RhPd nanoparticles to boost the alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The obtained stable RhPd-H nanoparticles exhibit pronounced alkaline HER activity with a small overpotential of 36.6 mV at 10 mA cm–2 and a low Tafel slope of 35.3 mV dec–1. The surface electronic state, bond distance, and coordination number of the Rh and Pd atoms are significantly influenced by the presence of interstitial hydrogen atoms. These modifications give RhPd-H nanoparticles a desirable hydrogen adsorption free energy, thus accelerating the hydrogen gas production. We further demonstrate that the interstitial hydrogen atom modulation strategy to improve the HER activity is universal for other Pd-based alloy nanostructures. This work presents a powerful strategy for designing efficient electrocatalysts for the HER and beyond.
