Until now, there have been many reports on the regulation of inorganic metal ions on the catalytic activity of nanozymes, but few reports on the regulation of anions (such as NO 2 − ) on enzyme activity. In this work, a copper-molybdenum doped carbon dots (Cu, Mo-CDs) with peroxidase-like (POD) activity was synthesized by simple one-step microwave digestion method. The Cu, Mo-CDs + NO 2 − system can promote 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) oxidizing to blue oxidative product (oxTMB) due to the formation of ∙NO 2 free radical. While Hg 2+ was introduced into the system, the POD-like activity of Cu, Mo-CDs + NO 2 − system was inhibited due to the strong interaction and the electron transfer between Cu, Mo-CDs and Hg 2+ . The formation of ∙NO 2 and the electron transfer capability of Cu, Mo-CDs + Hg 2+ were confirmed through ESR spectra and FMN experiments. The bioenzyme-free colorimetric assay based on Cu, Mo-CDs nanozyme is used for detection of NO 2 − and Hg 2+ , showing lower detection limit (LOD) of 1.63 µg/L for NO 2 − , 0.13 µg/L for Hg 2+ , respectively and good recovery from 90.79 to 108.90%. The work paves a new way to design a nanozyme-based colorimetric protocol for traces NO 2 − and Hg 2+ residues in food analysis.

A type of isocyano-functionalized, 1,8-naphthalimide-based chromophore ( M2 ) was successfully synthesized from its primary amine-derivatived precursor ( M1 ) compound. The chemical structure of M2 was verified by FT-IR, NMR and HRMS analyses. The presence of electron-withdrawing isocyano group brought significant influence to the optical properties of M2 . Distinct from the yellowish green emission of its precursor ( M1 ), M2 emitted ultraviolet light (with the emission peak at ∼389 nm, excited by 352 nm) in THF-water [V THF /V water = 3/7, buffered with 5 mM sodium dihydrogen phosphate-disodium hydrogen phosphate (PB), pH = 7.4] co-solvent system. Interestingly, M2 exhibited distinctive and selective optical response (with significant enhancement of emission at ∼560 nm) toward Hg 2+ . In Hg 2+ titration process, PL spectra of M2 displayed contiguous ratiometric alteration (simultaneous decreasing at 389 nm and increasing at 560 nm). Hg 2+ -assisted hydration of isocyano group to amino group on M2 was proposed as the plausible probing mechanism in this current case.

Pillararenes, a rising star in macrocyclic chemistry, are recognized as promising organic materials for metal ion separation. Herein, three novel pillar[5]arenes ( 1a-c ) appended with N,N -dimethyldithiocarbamoyl groups were designed for highly efficient extraction of aqueous mercury. This work represents the first case of using pillararene-based materials for organic mercury removal, and rather low Hg(II) residue (3.45 ppb) was found in the extraction raffinate of mercury spiked river water after being treated with the as-prepared extractants, which is a rare example of solvent extraction systems that meet the waste water discharge standard (<5 ppb). The extraction performance of the extractant materials was evaluated under different acidities, equilibrium time and sodium nitrate concentrations. High extraction efficiency (>99%) and selectivity (SF Hg/M > 690) were achieved under the optimum condition, and the near quantitative stripping after two contacts enable regeneration of the ligands as well as mercury recovery. The stoichiometric ratio between ligands and Hg 2+ was ascertained to be 1:1 from the slope analysis method and mass spectroscopy. Investigation of the extracted species by NMR, IR, EXAFS techniques and DFT simulation reveals that the C=S moieties of the ligands play a crucial role in metal complexation. It is noted that the as-prepared extractants show excellent recovery and removal ability towards mercury using simulated samples. After extraction by 1c , the total Hg(II) in spiked river samples was reduced to lower than 5 ppb, the maximum tolerable concentration set by China for industrial waste water. This study demonstrates the potential application of N,N -dimethyldithiocarbamoyl modified pillararenes as functional materials for aquatic mercury remediation.

Heavy metal pollution poses a major threat to human health, and developing a user-deliverable heavy metal detection strategy remains a major challenge. In this work, two-mode Hg 2+ sensing platforms based on the tunable cobalt metal-organic framework (Co-MOF) active site strategy are constructed, including a colorimetric, and an electrochemical assay using a personal glucose meter (PGM) as the terminal device. Specifically, thymine (T), a single, adaptable nucleotide, is chosen to replace typical T-rich DNA aptamers. The catalytic sites of Co-MOF are tuned competitively by the specific binding of T-Hg 2+ -T, and different signal output platforms are developed based on the different enzyme-like activities of Co-MOF. DFT calculations are utilized to analyze the interaction mechanism between T and Co-MOF with defect structure. Notably, the two-mode sensing platforms exhibit outstanding detection performance, with LOD values as low as 0.5 nM (colorimetric) and 3.69 nM (PGM), respectively, superior to recently reported nanozyme-based Hg 2+ sensors. In real samples of tap water and lake water, this approach demonstrates an effective recovery rate and outstanding selectivity . Surprisingly, the method is potentially versatile and, by exchanging out T-Hg 2+ -T, can also detect Ag + . This simple, portable, and user-friendly Hg 2+ detection approach shows plenty of promise for application in the future.

Direct comparison of Hg 2+ recognition motifs on a unified DHX scaffold. • Thioacetal and thiocarbonate motifs showed distinct sensing characteristics. • DHX-DT provided higher sensitivity with a detection limit of 7.0 nM. • DHX-PTC afforded rapid Hg 2+ detection, reaching equilibrium in 3 min. Two structurally analogous probes, DHX-DT and DHX-PTC , were rationally designed by incorporating a thioacetal group and a phenyl thiocarbonate group, respectively, into the dihydroxanthene (DHX) framework. Upon Hg 2+ -triggered desulfurization, both probes were converted into the common fluorophore DHX, resulting in a fluorescence turn-on response. Under the optimized conditions (EtOH/H 2 O, 1:1, v /v, pH 7.0), DHX-DT exhibited superior sensitivity with a detection limit of 7.0 nM, whereas DHX-PTC displayed a remarkably faster response, reaching equilibrium within 3 min, with a detection limit of 12.6 nM. Both probes showed excellent selectivity toward Hg 2+ over various competing metal ions and strong anti-interference capability. The sensing mechanisms were unequivocally verified by 1 HNMR, HRMS and DFT calculations. Furthermore, practical applicability was demonstrated through the determination of Hg 2+ in real environmental water samples, affording satisfactory recoveries of 95.50–104.50% and good agreement with ICP-OES measurements. The present work provides a direct comparative evaluation of two representative Hg 2+ -responsive recognition motifs within a unified DHX-based sensing platform, offering practical guidance for the rational screening of recognition units in the construction of reaction-based fluorescent probes for Hg 2+ detection. The excellent optical properties, enzyme-mimicking activities and unique surface functional groups of carbon dots (CDs) offer promising potential for fluorescent/colourimetric dual-mode detection of Hg 2+ . This paper reports the preparation of yellow-green fluorescent carbon dots (Fe-CDs) with outstanding peroxidase (POD) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities via a one-step hydrothermal method, achieving a quantum yield of 20.6%. Kinetic analysis revealed that the Michaelis constants ( K m ) of the Fe-CDs’ POD-like activity for OPD and H 2 O 2 were 0.15 mM and 2.36 mM, respectively. Furthermore, Fe-CDs demonstrated SOD-like activity, with half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC 50 ) values of 0.1 mg/mL for O 2 •− and 4 μg/mL for DPPH radicals. Fe-CDs were also capable of reacting with ABTS radical cations (ABTS •+ ), generating a purple product with a characteristic absorption peak at 540 nm. Based on the inhibitory effect of Hg 2+ on the enzymatic activity of Fe-CDs—which reduces the formation of ABTS •+ , thereby restoring fluorescence intensity and causing the fading of the solution's colour—a dual-channel fluorescent/colourimetric detection platform was developed. This study not only achieved the synthesis of CDs with multi-enzyme activities but also established a selective detection method.

Mercury ion (Hg 2+ ) contamination poses a serious threat to the environment and human health, highlighting the need for sensitive and sustainable detection strategies. Herein, we proposed an eco-friendly and low-cost fluorescent detection platform for Hg 2+ using N-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) synthesized from Artemisia argyi-derived cellulose extracted via deep eutectic solvent (DES) technology. The N-CDs showed strong fluorescence quenching toward Hg 2+ , achieving a low detection limit of 1 nM with a wide linear range of 0.05 to 20 μM. Detailed investigation confirmed that the quenching behavior mainly originated from the specific interactions between Hg 2+ and surface functional groups of N-CDs. To enable on-site and real-time applications, a smartphone-based fluorescence sensing system was developed. The quantitative signal was extracted using the (G + B)/G parameter, where G and B represent the green and blue intensity components obtained from Red-Green-Blue images under UV illumination. A clear linear correlation was observed between Hg 2+ concentration and the (G + B)/G response. The method was successfully applied for Hg 2+ detection in real water samples, confirming its practicality. Overall, this green and effective sensing approach offers significant potential for water quality assessment and environmental monitoring.

A nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs)-based fluorescent sensor was developed for ultrasensitive and selective detection of mercury ions (Hg2+) in complex matrices, such as Panax notoginseng (Burk.) F. H. Chen (Sanqi). The synthesized N-CDs exhibited intense blue fluorescence (quantum yield: 35%) with an ultra-small size of 1.93 ± 0.53 nm. Leveraging dynamic quenching mechanisms, the sensor achieved a linear detection range of 0–50 μM for Hg2+ and an exceptionally low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.2825 nM, outperforming existing CD-based sensors. The N-CDs demonstrated remarkable selectivity for Hg2+ in the presence of interfering ions and complex herbal components. Hg2+ in Sanqi samples was quantified by fluorescence analysis (25.5–26.8 μg kg−1, RSD < 2.0%) and cross-validated via Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) (24.8–26.2 μg kg−1, RSD < 1.0%), demonstrating N-CDs’ reliability for precise Hg2+ detection. Additionally, the N-CDs exhibited excellent biocompatibility and were successfully applied for cellular imaging in A549 cells, showcasing their dual functionality in environmental monitoring and biomedical diagnostics.

The detection of mercury(II) (Hg2+) and chromium(VI) (Cr6+) is of significant importance due to their high toxicity and harmful effects on the environment and human health. Conventional detection methods are often expensive and time-consuming, highlighting the need for efficient alternatives. Nanozyme-based detection systems have emerged as promising solutions, offering high sensitivity, stability, and cost-effectiveness. However, many existing nanozymes contain toxic components, limiting their practical application in environmental and food safety monitoring. This study reported the development of an organic polymer-based C-A-Fe nanozyme, synthesized via a simple self-assembly chelation process and exhibiting peroxidase-like activity. This nanozyme enabled an effective colorimetric sensing approach for Hg2+ and Cr6+ detection. This nanozyme enables highly sensitive and selective colorimetric detection of Hg2+ and Cr6+ with the assistance of glutathione (GSH) and 8-hydroxyquinoline (8-HQ), achieving detection limits as low as 9.65 nM for Hg2+ and 4.13 nM for Cr6+. Moreover, the system demonstrated high recovery rates in tap water, cod, and spinach samples, confirming its potential for real-world applications in environmental and food safety monitoring.

In this study, a planar benzothiazole Schiff base derivative ZX1 was designed and synthesized to selectively precipitate silver ions, in conjunction with the immunoassay detection of Hg 2+ ions. The silver chelation process was highly effective in the pH range of 7–10, with a silver ion precipitation ratio of 99.9 %. The coordination behavior of ZX1 with Ag + was studied using a series of spectroscopic measurements, topography analysis and DFT calculation. The shortest bond distances were 2.251 and 2.254 Å between nitrogen atom of thiazole and Ag + . Weak interactions were analyzed using the interaction region indicator (IRI) method and VMD. The immunoassay was developed through an anti-Hg 2+ /Ag + monoclonal antibody, which showed similar sensitivities for Ag + and Hg 2+ . The selectivity and anti-interference ability of the Schiff base ligands were tested for some hard metal ions and several anions. With co-existence of interference ion Ag + , Hg 2+ was detected in rice matrix solution with 77 %∼123.5 % recovery by addition of ZX1 as the masking reagent and 90.3 %∼115 % for wheat matrix. This research provides a promising immunoassay strategy for simultaneous detection of silver ions and mercury ions in food matrix by utilization of Schiff base ligands. This novel Schiff base ligand was then used as the pre-treatment reagent to remove silver ions within 5 min for detection of Hg 2+ or detection of both Ag + and Hg 2+ based on a novel bi-specific heavy metal antibody.

The development of reliable sensing platforms for the simultaneous detection of multiple heavy metal ions has remained challenging in environmental monitoring. Herein, a novel ratiometric electrochemical sensor was developed using a Cu-MOFs@MnO 2 NSs composite for the simultaneous quantification of Pb 2+ and Hg 2+ . The composite was synthesized through a facile approach and functionalized onto a screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE) to establish an efficient sensing interface. This design capitalized on the synergistic properties of both components: MnO 2 nanosheets provided abundant surface hydroxyl groups and enhanced electrical conductivity, while Cu-MOFs contributed a large specific surface area with multiple binding sites for metal ion enrichment. Significantly, the incorporated Cu-MOFs functioned as an internal reference, delivering a stable built-in signal for ratiometric analysis. The developed sensor achieved impressive detection limits of 22.69 nmol/L for Pb 2+ and 30.07 nmol/L for Hg 2+ , while maintaining high selectivity and reproducibility in complex matrices. This study not only established a reliable platform for the accurate detection of Pb 2+ and Hg 2+ but also promoted the adoption of ratiometric strategies in electrochemical sensing to support environmental protection and public health security.

In the present work, a novel dansyl group functionalized Fe3O4@SiO2 magnetic nanomaterial with a core–shell structure was developed, aiming to detect and remove Hg2+ from aqueous media. The multifunctional nanocomposite shows excellent fluorescence sensitivity and selectivity towards Hg2+ over other metal ions (Na+, K+, Mg2+, Al3+, Ca2+, Cd2+, Ni2+, Co2+, Fe3+, Zn2+, Pb2+, Cu2+, Ag+). Concentrations as low as 10−8 M can be detected and the addition of other metal ions has a negligible influence on the fluorescence emission. Regarding the reversibility of the nanosized sensor, the fluorescence of the DAP-Fe3O4@SiO2 nanocomposite in the presence of Hg2+ ions is found to be almost reversible when treated with iodide anion. Additionally, the nanocomposite can be easily separated from solutions by adding an external magnetic field. Moreover, the functionalized nanosphere shows a good adsorption capacity to Hg2+, which makes it repeatedly applicable for simultaneous Hg2+ sensing and removal from polluted water. These results indicate that the multifunctional nanocomposite may find potential applications for simple detection and easy removal of Hg2+ in biological and environmental areas.
