High sensitivity and fast response sensor for formaldehyde based on In2O3/Sn2O3 heterojunction

Liangyu Zhai,Xinliang Dai,Gangqiang Zhu,Fei Rao,Siyan Wang,Jiaqi Yang,Lujun Zhu,Xianjin Shi,Yu Huang,Yanmin Jia,Siyaka Mj Zubairu

Modifying metal oxide semiconductor materials is a primary approach to enhance gas sensor performance, and heterojunction is a promising method to address cross-sensitivity issues in gas sensors. Sn 2 O 3 nanoflower-based substrates and In 2 O 3 /Sn 2 O 3 heterojunction structures were successfully synthesized by hydrothermal synthetic method. The gas-sensing performance of the In 2 O 3 /Sn 2 O 3 heterojunction-based gas sensor towards formaldehyde gas was investigated. The gas sensor based on In 2 O 3 /Sn 2 O 3 heterojunction exhibited higher sensitivity to formaldehyde gas compared to pure Sn 2 O 3 gas sensor at the same operating temperature. The response and recovery rates of the sensor were significantly improved as well. In addition, the In 2 O 3 /Sn 2 O 3 gas sensor exhibited lower response to interfering gases compared to its response to formaldehyde gas, thus demonstrating superior selectivity over the pure Sn 2 O 3 sensor. The result provides a research direction for the development of high-performance, highly selective, and rapid response formaldehyde sensors, which has certain reference significance for the advancement of gas sensor technology.

In2O3 nanocubes modified with RuO2 for detection of TXM vapors containing benzyl group

Shendan Zhang,Yunan Wang,Fengdong Qu,Tiju Thomas,Minghui Yang

Indium oxide (In 2 O 3 ) nanocubes modified by ruthenium oxide (RuO 2 ) on the surface are successfully prepared through hydrothermal method , calcination and impregnation in turn. The sensing properties of RuO 2 -modified In 2 O 3 sensing material are significantly enhanced even with low loading amount. The response values of RuO 2 -modified In 2 O 3 sensing material to TXM vapor containing benzyl group (including toluene, xylene and mesitylene) increase rapidly when compared to various volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Therein the RuO 2 -modified In 2 O 3 sensor displays a 36-times increase in response value to mesitylene (100 ppm) in contrast to un-modified one at 255 °C. The optimum operating temperature (OOT) decreases obviously from 375 °C of pristine In 2 O 3 one. The gas sensing enhancement mechanism can be explained by electronic and chemical sensitization. However, the reason for selectivity change will be (temporarily) investigated further later.

Constructing Z-Scheme Bi2O3/In2O3 Heterojunction for Efficient Photocatalytic Degradation of Rhodamine B

Hongjun Chen,Zi Wang,Zeyang Xue,Chunhu Yu,Lizhai Pei,Chuangang Fan

A Bi 2 O 3 /In 2 O 3 heterojunction is successfully fabricated via a facile hydrothermal method using sodium bismuthate and indium nitrate as the source materials. The crystal structure, composition, micromorphology, and optical property of the Bi 2 O 3 /In 2 O 3 heterojunction are analyzed by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectrum, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and solid ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) diffuse reflectance spectra. The Bi 2 O 3 /In 2 O 3 heterojunction exhibits a remarkable photocatalytic degradation capacity for Rhodamine B, which is better than that of pure Bi 2 O 3 and In 2 O 3 . The photogenerated charges separation and transfer process of the Bi 2 O 3 /In 2 O 3 heterojunction follows a direct Z-scheme mechanism under UV–vis light irradiation. The trapping experiment indicates that oxidative radicals including •OH, h + , and •O 2 − play crucial roles in the photodegradation process. The outstanding photodegradation capacity is ascribed to spatially separated charge carriers, fast-charge transportation characteristic, and special bandgap structure of the Bi 2 O 3 /In 2 O 3 heterojunction. The introduction of H + and OH − ions into the reaction system promotes the formation of •OH and •O 2 − radicals, significantly enhancing the photodegradation rate of RhB. This study presents a new insight into the construction of the Z-scheme Bi 2 O 3 /In 2 O 3 heterojunction photocatalyst with potential application in wastewater treatment.

A Z-scheme ZnFe2O4/RGO/In2O3 hierarchical photocatalyst for efficient CO2 reduction enhancement

Jiadong Li,Feng Wei,Changchang Dong,Wei Mu,Xiaojun Han

Indium oxide (In2O3)-based photocatalysts have great potential in photocatalytic CO2 reduction. Nevertheless, their photocatalytic activity is inhibited by rapid electron–hole recombination. Hence, a novel Z-scheme ternary hierarchical ZnFe2O4/RGO/In2O3 photocatalyst is fabricated for photocatalytic conversion of CO2 to CO and CH4. The CO production rate reaches up to 35.4 μmol g−1 under 4 h of illumination using a 20ZFO/10RGO/IO catalyst, which is 3.9 times and 9.8 times higher than those using bare In2O3 and bare ZnFe2O4, respectively. The CH4 production rate is 7.8 μmol g−1, which is 4.3 fold and 2.4 fold higher, respectively, compared to those from bare In2O3 and bare ZnFe2O4. The enhancement of photocatalytic CO2 reduction was ascribed to a Z-scheme mechanism of the hierarchical catalysts by introducing RGO in-between In2O3 and ZnFe2O4 to promote charge separation and realize efficient utilization of the high-energy electrons and holes. The oxygen-defect of ZnFe2O4 also facilitates the adsorption and activation of CO2. This work provides new insights to design ternary In2O3-based hierarchical photocatalysts with a rational Z-scheme photocatalytic mechanism to improve the CO2 conversion efficiency.

Effects of In2O3 nanoparticles addition on microstructures and thermoelectric properties of Ca3Co4O9 compounds

Lei Zhang,Xing Hong,Zhiquan Chen,Dingkang Xiong,Jiaming Bai

The ( x ) In 2 O 3 /(1- x ) Ca 3 Co 4 O 9 ( x  = 0-15 wt%) composites were prepared using the solid reaction method followed by a spark plasma sintering process. There is no reaction occurring, and the natural c -axis grain-oriented structure is observed in all samples by XRD measurements. Scanning electron microscopy and Energy dispersive spectroscopy observations indicate that the In 2 O 3 nanoparticles are present as the ultrafine particles/clusters secondary phase in Ca 3 Co 4 O 9 . Electric properties measurement shows that the electrical conductivity reduced by adding In 2 O 3 particles, while the seebeck coefficient is virtually unaffected, which leads to the low power factor PF value of Ca 3 Co 4 O 9 . Significantly, however, there is an obvious recovery in the electrical conductivity of S15 sample compared to that of S5 and S10 samples, which also results in a rise again in PF of S15. This result may be of significance for further increase In 2 O 3 secondary phase content ( x  > 15 wt%) to enhance the thermoelectric property of Ca 3 Co 4 O 9 .

Electrospun Ca-doped In2O3 nanotubes for ethanol detection with enhanced sensitivity and selectivity

Changhui Zhao,Huimin Gong,Gaoqiang Niu,Fei Wang

Sensitivity and selectivity of metal oxide semiconductor-based gas sensors are two crucial criteria. In this work, a highly sensitive and selective ethanol sensor has been prepared based on Ca-doped In 2 O 3 nanotubes (Ca-In 2 O 3 NTs). The products were synthesized by a simple electrospinning method with subsequent annealing in air. The crystal structure and morphology of as-obtained products are obviously affected by Ca-doping levels (1–10 mol%). X-ray diffraction and electron paramagnetic resonance results reveal that some Ca dopants (≤3 mol%) can enter the lattice of In 2 O 3 with the decreasing grain size, and an enrichment of the oxygen vacancies. In contrast, the grain size of Ca-In 2 O 3 NTs increases dramatically with further increase of Ca concentration (7–10 mol%), and the excessive Ca dopants tend to form a new CaIn 2 O 4 phase. Gas-sensing measurements demonstrate that the Ca-In 2 O 3 sensors exhibit enhanced ethanol sensing properties with respect to the pure In 2 O 3 sensor. Especially, the 3% Ca-In 2 O 3 sensor shows the highest response (183.3, at 100 ppm) with the excellent selectivity for ethanol detection at 240 °C. Such sensitive and selective ethanol detection is mainly based on the “doping effect” of Ca 2+ ions, suggesting an effective route to develop the ability of In 2 O 3 based gas sensors.

Fabrication of In2O3/In2S3 microsphere heterostructures for efficient and stable photocatalytic nitrogen fixation

Huichang Xu,Yu Wang,Xiaoli Dong,Nan Zheng,Hongchao Ma,Xiufang Zhang

The synthesis of a novel In 2 O 3 /In 2 S 3 microsphere heterostructures is conducted through a well-designed two-step hydrothermal method. These composites are first applied for efficient fixation of N 2 to NH 3 under mild conditions without any organic scavengers and precious-metal cocatalysts. Here the In 2 S 3 flakes are in situ generated and uniformly assembled on In 2 O 3 microsphere. The phase structures, morphologies and oxygen vacancies of the samples are systematically characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), UV–vis diffuse-reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), and photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL), Raman, electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy and photoelectrochemistry. Meanwhile, the investigation of photocatalytic performance can confirm that the nitrogen fixation rate of In 2 O 3 /In 2 S 3 (III) heterostructure is 40.04 μmol g −1  h −1 , which is about 4.7 and 6.0 times higher than that of pure In 2 O 3 and In 2 S 3 , respectively.

Regulating the Crystal Facet Differences of In2O3 via Different Precipitants to Affect Methanol Selectivity

Pingping Li,Linjie Guan,Qicheng Zhang,Lian Zou,Maofeng Ding,Long Zhang,Danyun Xu,Yuanzhi Zhu,Delong Xie

Graphical Three indium trioxide (In 2 O 3 ) catalysts with varied morphologies and exposed crystal facets were synthesized. The catalyst with a predominantly exposed (211) facet achieved notable CO 2 conversion and CH 3 OH selectivity. This underscores the role of crystal facet engineering in improving catalyst performance for sustainable methanol production. Under the background of “carbon peak and carbon neutrality”, the hydrogenation of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) to methanol (CH 3 OH) represents a crucial pathway for promoting green and sustainable development. In 2 O 3 has gained attention as a promising material for CH 3 OH production from CO 2 due to its controllable properties including morphologies, particle sizes and oxygen vacancies, along with its excellent selectivity in CO 2 hydrogenation reactions. Herein, by employing various precursors, three distinct indium trioxide (In 2 O 3 ) catalysts with varied morphologies and predominantly exposed crystal facets were synthesized. It is found that the In 2 O 3 catalyst prepared using ammonia monohydrate (NH 3 ⋅H 2 O) as a precipitator exhibits a primarily exposed (211) crystal facet. This catalyst demonstrates a CO 2 conversion rate of 4.7 %, a selectivity of 55 %towards CH 3 OH, and a space velocity of 8000 ml g cat. −1 h −1 , under reaction conditions of 280 °C and 3 MPa. The (211) crystal face of In 2 O 3 is conducive to the generation of oxygen vacancies which shows exceptional active capabilities for CO 2 , and thus showing outstanding advantages in the selectivity towards CH 3 OH. The results underscore the importance of crystal facet engineering in tailoring the properties of catalysts for efficient CO 2 hydrogenation to CH 3 OH.

High performance and illumination stable In2O3 nanofibers-based field effect transistors by doping praseodymium

Zefei Peng,Wei Shi,Song Chen,Hang Shi,Xueling Yan,Zelin Liu,Linfeng Lan,Miao Xu,Min Li,Lan Liu

Although different kinds of one dimensional (1D) metal oxide nanofibers (MO-NFs) based field effect transistors (FETs) have been developed in recent years, their intrinsic deficiency in illumination instability are not addressed yet, which further prevented their application in practical life. In this work, due to the outstanding performance of suppressing oxygen vacancies and the blue light down-conversion with low charge transfer transition energy, praseodymium (Pr) is demonstrated an ideal candidate to dope into In 2 O 3 NFs for both transferring the depletion mode to the enhancement mode and enhancing the illumination stability of the FETs. The optima In 2 O 3 NFs-based FET was achieved by doping with 3 mol% Pr and exhibited an excellent electrical performance with a carrier mobility of 6.92 cm 2 V −1 s −1 , an on/off current ratio of ∼5.4 × 10 7 , threshold voltage of 5.2 V, and subthreshold swing of 0.37 V/dec. Moreover, the FETs exhibited good illumination stability under 3600 s negative gate bias stress test with illumination (NBIS). Finally, the FET was also used as a switch to bright the LED in this work, demonstrating its great promise of Pr-doped In 2 O 3 NFs in future one-dimensional electronic devices.

MOF-Derived In2O3-CeO2 Composite Catalyst with Abundant Oxygen Vacancies for Photothermal CO2 Reduction

Huiqing Dong,Siyu Huang,Haopeng Cui,Ziyi Zhang,Dongxu Zhou,Weikai Huang,Xiaodong Zhang,Zhongxiao Zhang,Jianqiu Lei,Ning Liu

The conversion of CO2into value-added chemicals using photothermal catalysis is an attractive approach for achieving carbon neutrality. However, the limited visible-light absorption and rapid charge carrier recombination of CeO2hinder its photothermal catalytic performance. Herein, a series of In2O3-modified CeO2(In2O3-CeO2) are fabricated from a Ce-BTC metal–organic framework (MOF) precursor and applied to photothermal CO2hydrogenation. This approach not only effectively modulates the pore structure but also generates abundant oxygen vacancies (Ov). As a result, CO2adsorption and activation, charge separation and photothermal catalytic performance over In2O3-CeO2are significantly enhanced. The 3% In2O3-CeO2(3% denotes amounts of In) composite catalyst exhibits the optimal catalytic performance with a CO yield of 92.35 mmol·g−1·h−1and a remarkable 100% selectivity. A mechanistic study reveals that the Ov-rich interface facilitates electron transfer and promotes CO2conversion through a CO2→ *COOH → *CO reaction pathway. This work provides an effective strategy for designing high-efficiency MOF-derived composites to achieve carbon utilization.

High-performance ethanol sensor based on Ag/In2O3 heterojunction with exceptional sensitivity and selectivity

Kai Tang,Zafari Umar,Lan Jiang,Lin Wang,Huan He,Xiaoqiang Zhan,Hongli Yang,Weiyou Yang,Dongdong Zhang

Detecting ethanol is critically important due to its widespread industrial applications and potential safety hazards, posing significant risks to both industrial production and human health. However, the development of ethanol sensors with high sensitivity and selectivity remains a substantial challenge. In this study, we demonstrate a highly sensitive and selective ethanol sensor based on rationally-designed heterojunctions, fabricated by decorating In2O3 nanotubes with Ag nanoparticles (NPs) through solvothermal and coprecipitation methods. The obtained Ag/In2O3 sensor exhibits exceptional ethanol sensing performance (S = 110.5 to 100 ppm), which exhibits an approximately 11-fold enhancement compared to that of pristine In2O3, and surpasses those of most ethanol sensors ever reported. Such improvement is mainly attributed to the synergistic effects of Schottky junction formation, electronic sensitization, and chemical catalysis, which collectively enhance electron transfer efficiency and surface reaction kinetics. Moreover, the as-constructed sensor demonstrates rapid response/recovery characteristics (50/70 s), excellent selectivity against interfering gases, and remarkable long-term stability, representing its promise toward practical applications.

3D rGO/MXene/In2O3 composite aerogel for high performance formaldehyde detection at room temperature

Xiaoqian Shi,Zhongxi Yang,Miao Liu,Peng Song

Two-dimensional layered materials are prone to interlayer stacking in gas sensing applications, leading to a reduction in specific surface area, slow gas diffusion, and inadequate response performance at room temperature. To address these issues, this study employed a combined hydrothermal reduction and freeze-drying method to prepare 3D rGO/MXene/In 2 O 3 composite aerogels, and systematically investigated their microstructure, pore structure, surface chemistry, and formaldehyde sensing behaviour at room temperature. The results indicate that this composite material possesses a continuous, interconnected three-dimensional porous network structure and a high specific surface area (282.78 m 2 /g), which effectively exposes active sites and accelerates gas transport. First-principles calculations confirm the presence of significant interfacial electronic interactions between the multiple components. Under room-temperature testing conditions, the aerogel-based sensor demonstrated a rapid response recovery time (6/8 s) and high formaldehyde response sensitivity (50 ppm, 26.9%), providing an experimental foundation and material design reference for the development of novel room-temperature rapid gas sensors.
