A novel path to prepare Fe/Al–layered double hydroxide nanosheets by sacrificial double anodes for the treatment of Cr-containing wastewater

Haijun Qiu,Xu Wang,Jing Cen,Penghui Shi,Jinchen Fan,Yulin Min,Qunjie Xu

Many methods used to synthesize efficient reducing agents of Fe and Al–layered double hydroxide (Fe/Al–LDH) nanosheets against oxidizing contaminants often require the use of unstable bivalent iron salts and long aging times at ambient temperatures. Here, we developed an easy-to-operate, environment-friendly, and scaled-up electrochemical engineering method without adding metal salts to synthesize Fe/Al–LDHs via an electrolytic reaction of active metal electrodes (Fe and Al). The process resulted in the growth of thin hexagonal Fe/Al–LDHs with a lateral size of approximately 100 nm and thickness of approximately 32 nm. The crystallization process of Fe/Al–LDHs strongly relied on the crystal nucleus of the first precipitate Al(OH) 3 and the Fe chemical valence. The oxidation state of Fe was markedly influenced by hydroxyl ions that formed on the cathode surface and the oxygen evolution reaction at high current density ( i ). The fast and simple manufacturing technique not only had high yield (approximately 0.2 g of Fe/Al–LDHs was obtained when i was 2 mA/cm 2 within 25 min) but also afforded Fe/Al–LDHs with excellent reducibility for the removal of Cr(VI). This study demonstrated an attractive option for the rapid and large-scale synthesis of Fe/Al–LDHs to enhance their application prospects.

Design of Magnetic TiO2@NiFe-LDH/Fe3O4 Heterostructures for Enhanced Photocatalytic Hydroxylation of Phenol

Yanqi Xu,Yixiong Wu,Hai Wang,Shuzhen Ma,Luyang Gan,Cunjun Li,Linjiang Wang

The efficiency of photocatalytic activity for hydroxylation of phenol is often hindered by rapid recombination of photogenerated charge carriers, posing a challenge for practical applications. Developing heterostructure photocatalysts that facilitate effective charge separation while ensuring ease of recovery is crucial. In this study, we report a TiO 2 @NiFe-LDH/Fe 3 O 4 heterostructure photocatalyst with a 3D core-shell architecture, fabricated via co-precipitation of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles onto NiFe-layered double hydroxide nanosheets (NiFe-LDH) supported on TiO 2 nanorods (TiO 2 NRs). This magnetic heterostructure demonstrated prefect photocatalytic performance for hydroxylation of phenol to dihydroxybenzenes (DHB), where the phenol conversion and DHB selectivity achieved 51.2% and 91.2%, outperforming individual TiO 2 NRs, Fe 3 O 4 , NiFe-LDH, and TiO 2 @NiFe-LDH. The outstanding activity can be attributed to efficient charge separation and rapid redox capabilities. Moreover, recycling experiments confirmed the photocatalyst's robust stability and ease of recovery. This work underscores the potential of heterostructure strategies in developing high-performance, recyclable photocatalysts for industrial applications. Graphical A 3D core-shell TiO 2 @NiFe-LDH/Fe 3 O 4 heterostructure enhances charge separation via directional electron/hole transfer, achieving 51.2% phenol conversion and 91.2% DHB selectivity. Magnetic Fe 3 O 4 enables facile recovery over 5 cycles, demonstrating scalable photocatalytic design.

NiMoO4@CoFe-LDH Anode Design to Improve Oxygen Bubble Transport in Dynamic Water Electrolysis

Yan Yin,Sipu Wang,Bin Chen,Anqi Zhang,Lianqin Wang,Fuqiang Bai,Tianyou Wang,Junfeng Zhang,Zhizhao Che

Direct water electrolysis using renewable energy offers a promising approach to green hydrogen production. Fluctuations in power supply cause gas bubbles to accumulate on the electrode surface, leading to segmented plug flow that hampers electrode activity and durability. To tackle the ongoing challenges of gas bubble accumulation in electrocatalytic systems, this study presents a NiMoO 4 @CoFe-LDH composite electrode with a 3D layered hierarchical structure designed to establish an effective gas-liquid-solid triple-phase interface. This distinct heterogeneous structure features a superhydrophilic surface, which enhances the active surface area and bubble generation sites, promoting oxygen bubble release and improving charge transfer. This bubble behavior synergistically enhances the high efficiency, dynamic response, and low load adaptability of the electrolyzer by avoiding high-current mass-transfer clogging and enhancing the adaptability to dynamic operating conditions. In 1 m KOH, the catalyst achieves a 202 mV (η@10 mA cm −2 ) overpotential, with high stability of over 1000 h. The Pt/C||NiMoO 4 @CoFe-LDH anion-exchange membrane electrolyzer operates efficiently and stably under fluctuating operating conditions (1.70 V@1.0 A cm −2 , 30,000 cycles), providing a new paradigm for green hydrogen anode design in scenarios of fluctuating supply of renewable energy.

Facile topochemically prepared hierarchical Ni–Fe LDH nanoflowers for the electrochemical oxygen elution reaction

Zairan Liu,Yifei Yang,Jiaoning Tang,Yuanming Deng

Here we report a simple topochemical method to prepare Ni–Fe layered double hydroxide (LDH). Ni(II)Fe(II) hydroxide was prepared via coprecipitation of Ni2+ and Fe2+ by NH4HCO3 under anaerobic conditions at room temperature. Ni–Fe LDH was obtained via oxidation intercalation by exposing the precipitate to air. The structure of the LDH was characterized and the performance in the electrochemical oxygen elution reaction (OER) was determined. Residual Fe(II) was observed by XPS due to incomplete oxidation, resulting in Fe replacing the Ni site in the LDH. It is found that LDH embedded with both Fe–O–Fe and Ni–O–Fe moieties is beneficial to the OER in terms of a low overpotential (240 mV at 10 mA cm−2), small Tafel slope (25 mV dec−1) and high electrochemical stability.

Surface Spatial Confinement Effect on Mn–Co LDH@Carbon Dots for High-Performance Supercapacitors

Lili Song,Chunlian Peng,Fan Yang,Lian Wang,Yinhua Jiang,Yuqiao Wang

The charge transport between layers of layered double hydroxide (LDH) with structural stability is generally considered as a key factor in restricting electrochemical performances. Herein, we report the surface spatial confinement effect on Mn–Co LDH@carbon dots (CDs) to enhance charge transfer and the stable structure for high-performance supercapacitors. The surface confined effect should be characterized as the charge transfer and interaction between Mn–Co LDH and CDs using density functional theory calculations. CDs can improve the density of states near the Fermi level to achieve an enhanced conductivity. The geometric structure can remain stable at room temperature within 200 fs by using ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. The two-electrode device gained the energy density of 79 W h kg–1 and a power density of 666 W kg–1 at 1 A g–1. This design concept will help to design, prepare, and assemble the high-efficiency and long-lifetime electrochemical energy storage devices based on various layered materials.

Environmentally friendly electrostatically driven self-assembled LDH/GO/PVDF composite membrane for water treatment

Haojie Zeng,Zongxue Yu,Yixin Peng,Lilian Zhu

In this contribution, an environmentally friendly electrostatically driven self-assembled layered double hydroxide (LDH)/graphene oxide (GO)/polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) composite membrane was prepared and evaluated. The composite membrane was prepared based on the electrostatic self-assembly between positively charged LDH and negatively charged GO, then above composite was loaded on the PVDF membrane substrate by vacuum suction filtration. The preparation process does not contain organic matter, which was very environmentally friendly. The properties of the composite membrane were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy . The above characterizations showed that the addition of LDH can increase the layer spacing of the GO sheets, the hydrophilicity of the composite membrane, and the removal rates of Cu 2+ and methylene blue (MB). More importantly, the composite membrane has excellent stability in water and maintains a stable removal rate after long-term filtration. And no significant changes occur even after being left in the ultrasonic bath for a while. In general, the LDH/GO/PVDF composite membrane prepared in this study has a great application value and prospect in the water treatment and opens up a new path in improving membrane performance .

Carbon Nanotube-Engineered Electron Transfer Pathways in NiFe-LDH for Enhanced Photocatalytic Ferrate Activation

Da Teng,Pengxiang Qiu,Yingying Xu,Chunjie Zhu,Xiu Zhang,Leyi Liu,Chen Wei,Yalin Yu,Ningxuan Xue,Xinyu Gai,Yiyang Chen,Siyue He,Guanjie Lin,Fengling Liu,Jiayu Gu,Shuai Zhang,Zhaobing Guo

Ferrate(VI) (Fe(VI)) is a powerful oxidant for wastewater treatment, but its use is hindered by electron transfer limitations. To address this, we designed a NiFe-layered double hydroxide-carbon nanotube (NiFe-LDH-CNT) hybrid photocatalyst. The design is based on the hypothesis that incorporating conductive CNTs can enhance interfacial charge-transfer capability, thereby promote Fe(VI) activation. Under visible light, this catalyst enhances Fe(VI) performance by facilitating the formation of reactive high-valent iron intermediates, accompanied by the generation of reactive oxygen species. Compared with pristine NiFe-LDH, the CNT-integrated composite exhibits improved charge separation and accelerated interfacial electron transport, resulting in enhanced pollutant degradation efficiency. In addition, the catalyst remains stable and effective over time, even in complex water environments. This approach offers a practical way to enhance Fe(VI)-based water treatment processes.

Facile Preparation of a Stable Fe3O4@LDH@NiB Magnetic Core-Shell Nanocomposite for Hydrogenation

Xuejia Gao,Libo Niu,Xianliang Qiao,Wenhui Feng,Yingying Cao,Guoyi Bai

A novel NiB deposited layered double hydroxide (LDH) coated ferroferric oxide (Fe 3 O 4 @LDH@NiB) magnetic core-shell nanocomposite was successfully fabricated by the combination of coprecipitation and impregnation-reduction. During the Fe 3 O 4 @LDH preparation, a facile template-free approach was employed to introduce the LDH shell, which was more efficient than the conventional method for the preparation of mesoporous materials that always needs to introduce and remove templates. The resulted Fe 3 O 4 @LDH has a relatively high surface area and abundant surface hydroxyl group, which can adsorb metal ions, making it favorable to disperse and stabilize the active Ni species, as demonstraed by TEM, XPS, FT-IR and BET characterizations. Therefore, it exhibited good activity in the selective hydrogenation of cinnamic acid to hydrocinnamic acid with the conversion and selectivity both approaching to 100%. Notably, the obtained Fe 3 O 4 @LDH@NiB can be easily separated by an external magnetic field and recycled eleven times without appreciable loss of its initial catalytic activity.

Dual-site doping enhances the performance of NiMnFe-LDH catalysts for alkaline oxygen evolution

Xinxuan Duan,Daoming Zhang,Jiacuo Xirao,Zhenyu Zhou,Yanbin Wang,Xi Xiao

Nickel-iron layered double hydroxides (NiFe-LDHs) are among the most promising non-precious metal catalysts for alkaline oxygen evolution reaction (OER), yet their performance still requires further improvement for practical applications. While introducing a third metal is a common strategy, most dopants occupy only a single valence site, limiting their ability to simultaneously optimize both Ni 2 + and Fe 3+ centers in the LDH lattice. This work exploits the unique dual-valent character of manganese (Mn 2+ /Mn 3+ ) to achieve simultaneous substitution at both Ni 2+ and Fe 3+ sites, a novel approach confirmed by XPS analysis. The resulting NiMnFe-LDHs catalyst exhibits exceptional OER activity (278 mV @10 mA·cm −2 ) and 200-hour stability at industrial current densities (400 mA·cm −2 ). In -situ Raman spectroscopy reveals that Mn doping facilitates the LDH-to-NiFeOOH transformation during OER, while XPS demonstrate the Mn 2+ /Mn 3+ -induced electron redistribution enhances both charge transfer and intermediate adsorption. This valence-mediated dual-site doping strategy establishes a new paradigm for designing high-performance LDH catalysts.

MOF-derived NiCo-LDH-BTA composite nanocontainers for anticorrosion and microwave-absorbing multifunctional coatings

Xiaodi He,Shanle Zhang,Yunjie Sun,Zhipeng Xu,Yani He,Yue Zhang

In this work, a benzotriazole (BTA)-loaded (Metal Organic Framework) MOF derived NiCo (layered double hydroxide) LDH nanocontainer (ZLB) was developed and incorporated into a polyvinyl butyral (PVB) matrix to fabricate a multifunctional coating with integrated anticorrosion and Microwave absorption capabilities. The BTA loading capacity of ZLB reached 35 wt%. The encapsulated BTA exhibited pH-responsive release behavior, with accelerated liberation under both acidic and alkaline conditions. Such release characteristics ensure inhibitor storage stability during service while enabling stimulus-triggered protection once the local environment becomes corrosive. Electrochemical measurements confirmed that the incorporation of ZLB markedly improved the protective performance of the PVB coating. The coating exhibited a corrosion current density as low as 1.29 × 10 −8 A·cm −2 and a corrosion rate of 1.501 × 10 −4  mm·year −1 at an optimal filler content of 1.8 wt%. In addition, ZLB delivered a minimum reflection loss of −30.4 dB at 7.8 GHz with a matching thickness of 2.0 mm. These results demonstrate that the integration of ZIF-8, NiCo-LDH, and BTA creates a hierarchical interfacial structure and enhances inhibitor-mediated active protection in the PVB coating. Meanwhile, the ZLB filler exhibits microwave-attenuation capability, providing a promising strategy for designing thin anticorrosion coatings containing multifunctional nanofillers.

Unlocking flexoelectricity in two-dimensional CuAl-LDH nanosheets for ultrasound-driven flexocatalytic tumor therapy

Shaohua Liu,Xiaoling Zhang,Yunge Wang,Hongjun Xia,Wenping Zhu,Yanxia Li,Weijie Yang,Zengchen Liu,Boshi Tian,Piaoping Yang

2D centrosymmetric CuAl-LDH as flexocatalysts for sono-flexocatalytic tumor therapy. • Non-uniform lattice distortion induces a strain gradient and flexoelectricity. • Ultrasound-driven generation of superoxide anions, singlet oxygen, and H 2 O 2 . • POD-like activity and GSH depletion synergistically amplify tumor oxidative stress. Sonocatalytic therapy has emerged as a promising antitumor modality owing to its deep tissue penetration and high spatiotemporal accuracy. However, the rapid electron–hole recombination in sonocatalysts severely restricts the reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and therapeutic efficacy. Although piezoelectric materials enable efficient charge separation, their prerequisite of a non-centrosymmetric crystal structure severely constrains the availability of suitable candidates. Herein, we demonstrate that two-dimensional (2D) CuAl-LDH nanosheets, synthesized via a facile coprecipitation route, serve as flexoelectric nanoagents for ultrasound-driven tumor treatment. Under ultrasound stimulation, the nanosheets efficiently generate superoxide anions (·O 2 − ) and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) through the flexocatalytic effect, alongside simultaneous in situ H 2 O 2 production. Density functional theory calculations reveal that compressive stress creates non-uniform strain gradients that break local inversion symmetry in 2D CuAl-LDH, inducing an in-plane flexoelectric polarization and built-in electric field that synergistically promote charge separation and directional carrier migration. Moreover, the CuAl-LDH nanosheets exhibit intrinsic peroxidase-like activity and glutathione-depleting ability; the ultrasound-generated H 2 O 2 is continuously catalyzed to produce hydroxyl radicals, thereby establishing a cascade ROS-amplification loop that synergistically amplifies intracellular oxidative stress. Furthermore, the nanosheets exhibit favorable biodegradability and biosafety. This work uncovers the intrinsic flexoelectric effect in CuAl-LDH nanosheets and provides insights for the design of 2D LDH-based flexocatalytic nanoplatforms for tumor therapy. 2D centrosymmetric CuAl-LDH nanosheets are developed as flexocatalysts for sono-flexocatalytic tumor therapy. Under ultrasound stimulation, non-uniform lattice distortion induces a strain gradient, leading to flexoelectric polarization that drives the generation of superoxide anions, singlet oxygen, and H 2 O 2 . Additionally, the nanosheets exhibit POD-like activity and deplete GSH, synergistically amplifying intratumoral oxidative stress to enhance antitumor efficacy. Br--intercalated ZnMgAl-LDH Heterogeneous Catalyst for Efficient Cycloaddition of CO2 with Propylene Oxide

Guangyu Zhang,Ningkun Xu,Feng Sun,Bing Sun,Xinmei Liu,Wei Xu,Zhe Yang

Introduction The catalytic cycloaddition of CO2 with epoxides to produce cyclic carbonates represents one of the most promising CO2 utilization technologies, offering 100% atomic economy under mild conditions. Nevertheless, the development of cost-effective heterogeneous catalysts with high performance under solvent- and cocatalyst-free conditions remains a grand challenge. Herein, we report the rational design and synthesis of a multifunctional heterogeneous catalyst for efficient CO2/propylene oxide (PO) cycloaddition under solvent- and cocatalyst-free conditions. Methods The ZnMgAl-Br- heterogeneous catalyst was prepared through an integrated coprecipitation-ion exchange method. Structural and physicochemical properties were systematically characterized using SEM, XRD, EDX mapping, BET, and NH3-TPD, which confirmed the coexistence of abundant Br- nucleophiles and –OH hydrogen-bond donors within the layered matrix. Catalytic tests were conducted in a 50 mL stainless steel autoclave. Results A Br- intercalated ZnMgAl layered double hydroxide (ZnMgAl-Br-) catalyst was successfully constructed, integrating nucleophilic Br- anions with hydrogen-bond donating –OH groups in a precisely engineered layered framework. Under optimized conditions (140oC, 7 h, 2.5 MPa), the catalyst achieved 99.2% PO conversion, 98.7% PC selectivity, and 97.9% PC yield. The result represents a remarkable improvement compared with benchmark catalysts (MgAl-Br−: 50.5% yield; ZnMgAl-NO3−: 13.1% yield), highlighting the critical synergy among Br- nucleophiles, Zn species, and –OH groups. Discussion The results demonstrate that the cooperative interaction between Br- and –OH groups is central to the catalytic efficiency of CO2/PO cycloaddition. Incorporation of Zn species expanded the interlayer spacing and optimized the spatial arrangement of Br−/-OH sites, thereby enhancing cooperative catalysis. Conclusion The findings highlight the critical role of Br- nucleophiles and the Zn-modified layered structures in enabling cooperative catalysis. This work establishes a rational strategy for designing multifunctional heterogeneous catalysts for efficient CO2 utilization through epoxide cycloaddition.
