Solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) are promising candidates for next-generation safe solid-state lithium metal batteries (SSLMBs) due to their high flexibility and ease of processing. However, their widespread application is hindered by intrinsic limitations such as high crystallinity, inadequate mechanical strength, and interfacial instability against the lithium anode. To address these issues and construct a stable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) and cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI), this study introduces a solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) design. The design incorporates commercial LiFePO 4 (LFP, 30 wt%) particles as an inorganic filler into a polyethylene oxide (PEO) matrix, along with LiPO 2 F 2 (LDP, 5 wt%) as a film-forming additive. The optimized SPE enables a Li||Li symmetric cell to cycle stably for over 1360 h at a current density of 0.2 mA cm −2 . Furthermore, the LFP||Li cell demonstrates remarkable durability, sustaining 800 cycles at 1 C (1 C = 170 mA g −1 ) with a high-capacity retention of 81.1%. The NCM811||Li cell further validates this robustness, retaining 87.4% of its capacity after 300 cycles at 1 C (1 C = 180 mA g −1 ). This work presents a simple and cost-effective strategy for fabricating high-performance SPEs and provides new insight into selecting composite fillers for durable solid-state lithium-metal batteries (SSLMBs).

Ethyl lactate (EL) enables green delamination of spent LFP cathodes via a closed-loop recycling strategy. • Competitive H-bonding selectively breaks PVDF-Al interface, achieving >98% separation efficiency. • Regenerated LFP delivers 144.0 mAh g −1 and 97.8% retention after 300 cycles, matching benchmarks. • EL process cuts energy use by 67% versus NMP, offering high economic returns with zero toxicity. Recycling spent lithium ion phosphate (LFP) batteries faces significant challenges due to the strong adhesion between the cathode active material (CAM) and aluminum (Al) current collector, often requiring corrosive chemicals or toxic solvents that compromise material integrity and generate hazardous waste. Herein, we report a sustainable delamination strategy utilizing bio-based ethyl lactate (EL), a green solvent, to achieve efficient and selective separation under mild thermal conditions (85 °C). Unlike conventional methods, EL disrupts the interfacial bonding via competitive hydrogen bonding, selectively targeting the polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) binder without corroding the Al substrate, thereby enabling the high-purity recovery of both components. The resulting delaminated LFP, free from organic impurities undergoes a streamlined direct regeneration via hydrothermal relithiation and calcination to restore its stoichiometry and crystallinity. The regenerated LFP delivers a high initial discharge capacity of 144.0 mAh g −1 with 97.8% capacity retention after 300 cycles at 1C, outperforming materials from conventional recycling routes. Techno-economic and life-cycle assessments reveal that the EL process operates with 67% lower energy intensity than the NMP benchmark, avoids toxic solvent degradation, and achieves superior economic returns by minimizing reagent consumption and maximizing the recovery of high-value materials. This work establishes a closed-loop, green, and industrially viable pathway for sustainable LPF battery recycling. Ethyl lactate (EL) selectively dissolves the binder and weakens interfacial adhesion, enabling gentle delamination of active material from aluminum foil. The recovered material is directly regenerated into high-performance cathode powders, which are then reassembled into new lithium-ion batteries, closing the loop in sustainable battery recycling. Olivine-type lithium iron phosphate LiFePO 4 (LFP) is widely used as the cathode for lithium ion batteries in electric vehicles due to its excellent structural stability and low cost. Herein, LFP/C composites are prepared using expired beer as carbon source, which exhibits environmentally friendly benignity and provides a uniform N, P in-situ co-doped carbon layer. On one side, the polysaccharides and monosaccharides in beer has strong steric hindrance ability, which inhibits the growth of particles during sintering. On the other side, the uniform N, P co-doping tunes the electron cloud of the carbon layer, improving the electronic conductivity. As a result, the as-prepared LFP/C composite shows enhanced rate capabilities and structural stability. In detail, the material delivers the initial specific discharge capacity of 134 mAh•g −1 with capacity retention of 94.5% after 1000 cycles at a high rate of 5 C. Even at a higher rate of 10 C, it has a specific discharge capacity of 123 mAh•g −1 . Besides, the LFP/C displays enhanced low-temperature performance compared to conventional carbon-coated LFP. Therefore, this work demonstrates the advantages of using expired beer as carbon source for LFP cathode material , which is also feasible for other carbon-coated cathode or anode materials , beneficial for increasing the power density of lithium ion batteries .

Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) was prepared and applied in the heterogeneous activation of persulfate (PS) for Orange G (OG) degradation in water. Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used to characterize the properties of the material before and after activation. The effects of several parameters on its catalytic activity were also investigated. It was found that the catalyst presented ultrafast activity for OG and other organic dye degradations. The results from XPS further suggested that the highly catalytic efficiency possibly involved the activation of PS to sulfate radicals as main radical meditated by the redox pair of Fe(II)/Fe(III) of LiFePO4/FePO4.

Gel electrolytes show certain advantages over conventional liquid and solid electrolytes, but their mechanical strength and surface adhesion to the electrode remain to be improved. To address the challenges, we design and fabricate herein the core–shell nanofiber mats in situ on the LiFePO4 electrode as matrices for gel electrolytes, in which the core is poly(m-phenylene isophthalamide) (PMIA) nanofiber and the shell are composite of Al2O3 nanoparticles and poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVdF-HFP). The mechanical property of the core–shell polymeric nanofiber mats and their surface interaction with LiFePO4 electrode are characterized complementarily using dynamic thermomechanical analysis and scanning electron microscopy. The electrochemical properties of the gel electrolytes based on the as-prepared matrices after being loaded with lithium salt solution are studied systematically on half coin cells. It is found that the ultimate strength of the core–shell PMIA@PVdF-HFP/Al2O3 mat can reach 6.70 MPa, 2 times higher than that of the PVdF-HFP/Al2O3 nanofiber mat. Meanwhile, the shell PVdF-HFP/Al2O3 can ensure manifest surface affinity to the LiFePO4 electrode and enhance lithium-ion conductance. Thus, the as-assembled LiFePO4 half coin cells using PMIA@PVdF-HFP/Al2O3 gel electrolyte show good electrochemical performances, especially the long cycle stability with the capacity retention of 96.6% after 600 cycles under 1C.

Three-dimensional (3D) LiFePO 4 @MWCNTs composite has been prepared using phytic acid as the phosphorus source by a simple solvothermal method combined with freeze drying under vacuum. The relationships between the phase structures, the morphologies and electrochemical performance characteristics of the as-prepared samples are studied using a series of characterization methods. It is found that the MWCNTs wrap around the LiFePO 4 particles to form a 3D network because of the reactions between the special functional groups of the phytic acid with Fe 2+ and –C O or –COOH on the surface of the functionalized MWCNTs, resulting in the improvement of conductivity and the electron and ion transport. Due to these merits of MWCNTs and phytic acid, the LiFePO 4 @MWCNTs exhibits good electrochemical performance with high initial discharge capacities of 152.7, 149.6 and 138.8 mAh g −1 at 1, 2 and 5C, respectively. Even at 10C, it still delivers a capacity of 117.5 mAh g −1 .

In recent years, recycling of numerous spent lithium-ion battery cathode materials has received increasing attention in order to protect the environment as well as to conserve resources, and the recovery of spent LiFePO4 (LFP) by direct regeneration has been widely studied. A considerable body of literature has delved into the failure mechanism of LFP. The mechanism is characterized by an irreversible phase change, which is primarily attributed to the sluggish diffusion of lithium ions (Li+) during cycling. Additionally, the migration of iron (Fe) ions to occupy Li+ sites further impedes Li+ diffusion. Consequently, the electrochemical performance of directly regenerated LFP is diminished by the phenomenon of Li defects. Here, a method of direct regeneration of LFP based on a doping strategy using environmentally friendly and economically efficient natural biomass amino acids has been developed, which inhibits Fe ion migration and improves the diffusion kinetics of Li+ and electrons by constructing a nitrogen-doped carbon coating. The regenerated LFP cathode exhibits excellent cycling stability and rate performance (98.7% capacity retention over 100 cycles at 1C current density and a high capacity retention of 87.9% after 500 cycles at 1C).

Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO 4 , LFP) is a frequently utilized cathode material for lithium-ion batteries. However, its practical applications are constrained by its relatively low ionic and electronic conductivities. To address this issue, it is possible to utilize highly conductive metallic coatings to enhance the material's electronic conductivity. Herein, LiFePO 4 with Cu composites (LFP/Cu) as cathode was synthesized by a simple solid-state process via one-step grinding in the presence of CuNO 3 and ascorbic acid. The discharge capacity of the LFP/Cu cathode with 0.75 wt% Cu was found to be 160.9 mA h g −1 at 0.1 C, representing a close approximation of its theoretical capacity and a notable enhancement compared to pure LFP (145.9 mA h g −1 ). Furthermore, it demonstrates excellent stability with a capacity retention of 136.5 mA h g −1 after 100 cycles at 2 C, as well as good rate performance. The electrochemical impedance spectra demonstrate that the incorporation of copper results in a further reduction in the resistance of LFP/Cu compared to pure LFP. The incorporation of copper particles into lithium iron phosphate has been shown to enhance its electronic conductivity, thereby further enhancing its electrochemical performance. In this study, we present a facile and cost-effective room-temperature synthesis method for the preparation of LiFePO 4 /Cu composites with improved electrochemical properties. This work provides a promising avenue for the design of cathode materials in lithium-ion batteries.

N -Ethyl carboxylic acid functionalized polyethyleneimine ( N -CEPEI) has been explored as a novel water-solution binder for LiFePO 4 (LFP) cathodes, which is synthesized via Michael addition reaction of acrylic acid with the primary and secondary amines from PEI, followed by subsequent in situ condensation. The N -CEPEI binder facilitates the formation of a 3D polymer networks, which exhibits a higher diffusion efficacy of lithium ions and better mechanical strength compared to the commercial poly(vinylidene difluoride) (PVDF) binder, and thus maintains the structural integrity of LFP electrode. The electrochemical performance of the LFP electrode utilizing N -CEPEI binder is evaluated through cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and long-cycle-life testing, and the results are compared with those of electrodes using PVDF and PEI binder. The optimal LFP electrode with N -CEPEI binder exhibits superior cycling stability and rate capability, delivering a capacity of 139.60 mAh g −1 with a capacity retention of 94.8% after 400 cycles at 1 C, as compared with 86.6% for PVDF-LFP electrode. Even at a high rate of 5 C, the N -CEPEI-LFP electrode maintains a capacity of 80 mAh g −1 after 500 cycles. This work highlights the potential of N -CEPEI as an effective water-solution binder for LFP-based lithium-ion batteries.

The resource scarcity and pollution leakage risk caused by discarding the spent power lithium-ion batteries has aroused growing concern. Recovering and regenerating the cathode material from spent power lithium-ion batteries in an easy and environmentally friendly manner remains a significant challenge and an area of focus in battery research. Hence, a green and convenient method to recover FePO 4 from spent LiFePO 4 cathode powder by using Na 2 S 2 O 8 as an oxidizer and as cathode materials for lithium/sodium-ion batteries (LIBs/SIBs) is reported. Benefiting from the remarkable graphene oxide (GO) and vanadium oxide (V 2 O 5 ) coating, the regenerated FePO 4 –V 2 O 5 –graphene oxide (FePO 4 –V 2 O 5 –GO) is suitable for Li/Na storage (153 mAh g −1 at 0.2C/118 mAh g −1 at 0.5C). The high capacity retention, that stable for 300 cycles in LIBs and 300 cycles for SIBs, is also realized due to the stable structure. This work provides a green strategy for regenerating the cathode of spent lithium-ion batteries and designing cathodes of alkali metal ion batteries.

Rational design and construction of cathode materials with high ion transport coefficient and high electrical conductivity is of great importance for improving the reaction kinetics of Li-ion batteries (LIBs). Herein, we develop the three-dimensional (3D) LiFePO 4 @reduced graphene oxide/carbon nanofibers (LiFePO 4 @rGO/CNFs) to serve as flexible cathodes for LIBs. Through the electrospinning technique combined with the subsequent pyrolysis , the composite nanofiber precursors have been successfully converted into flexible electrodes . As demonstrated, the as-prepared electrodes present uniform nanofibers, in which the rGO sheets are evenly attached to CNFs , and LiFePO 4 nanoparticles are homogeneously distributed in CNFs. Benefited by the structural advantages and the improving conductivity, the optimum LiFePO 4 @rGO/CNFs cathode exhibits a high initial capacity of 167 mAh g −1 at 0.5 C, and maintains a reversible capacity of 150 mAh g −1 after 200 cycles at 1 C. Galvanostatic intermittent titration technique (GITT) shows that LiFePO 4 @rGO/CNFs has a high ion diffusion rate (8.82 × 10 −12 cm 2 s −1 ), further suggesting that such 3D structures are appropriate as cathode materials for LIBs. These findings demonstrate that the 3D continuously conductive network of LiFePO 4 composites is a promising cathode material for LIBs.

A microwave-assisted hydrothermal approach combined with carbothermal reduction has been developed to synthesize monodisperse porous LiFePO 4 /C microspheres , which possess the diameter range of 1.0–1.5 μm, high tap density of ∼1.3 g cm −3 , and mesoporous characteristic with Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area of 30.6 m 2 g −1 . The obtained microspheres show meatball-like morphology aggregated by the carbon-coated LiFePO 4 nanoparticles . The electrochemical impedance spectra (EIS) results indicate that carbon coating can effectively enhance both of the electronic and ionic conductivities for LiFePO 4 /C microspheres. The Li-ion diffusion coefficient of the LiFePO 4 /C microspheres calculated from the cyclic voltammetry (CV) curves is ∼6.25 × 10 −9 cm 2 s −1 . The electrochemical performance can achieve about 100 and 90 mAh g −1 at 5C and 10C charge/discharge rates, respectively. As cathode material , the as-prepared LiFePO 4 /C microspheres show excellent rate capability and cycle stability, promising for high power lithium-ion batteries.
