We herein reported the first case of successfully synthesizing homologous Ti(IV) − based metal−organic frameworks (MOFs) junction, comprising NH 2 -MIL-125 core and NTU-9 layer, via a MOF-on-MOF strategy. Benefiting from the core-shell structural advantages and the homophase type II junction effect, the obtained NH 2 -MIL-125@NTU-9 hybrids exhibit accelerated reaction kinetics and enhanced electron transfer behaviour in the solar-driven CO 2 reduction. The quantum efficiency of formate production at 430 nm (0.67%) and product selectivity (94.47%) over NH 2 -MIL-125@NTU-9 far surpass those of the pure NH 2 -MIL-125 (0.13%, 88.56%) and NTU-9 (0.16%, 89.26%), which is among the highest performances of MOFs reported previously.

A convenient self-assembly method is proposed for synthesis of 3D Au/MOF-808 (Zr) composite nanostructures with a cerium metal-organic framework loaded with gold nanoparticles. We combine adsorption properties of MOF materials with surface plasmon resonance of noble metals to construct hotspot-dense 3D Au/MOF-808 (Zr) SERS substrates, by using a two-step method of solvothermal and reduction reactions. The results show that optimal SERS substrates are obtained from a volume ratio of gold nanoparticles to MOF-808 (Zr) solution of 4:1 and a self-assembly time of 2 h. Rhodamine 6G (R6G) is used as a molecular probe to characterize and analyze SERS properties of substrates of 3D Au/MOF-808 (Zr) prepared under the optimal process conditions, where the substrates are capable to detect R6G concentrations down to 10 –10 M with a relative standard deviation of 8.81%. Finally, we applied the SERS substrates of 3D Au/MOF-808 (Zr) to the detection of pesticide thiram, and establish a quantitative determination method. 3D Au/MOF-808 (Zr) provides a sensitive detection of thiram in lake water by SERS with a detection limit of 1.49 × 10 −9 M. Application tests show that a SERS enhancement factor of the MOF-based SERS substrates for the detection of thiram can be significantly increased to 5.91 × 10 5 . Thus, the above results indicate that such substrate has high sensitivity, good adsorption, homogeneity, and reproducibility, which can be extended for sensitive detection of pesticide residues in food and environment. Graphical Oxygen evolution : Unique anisotropic MOF-on-MOF materials can be conveniently obtained by using solvents with different polarities. After carbonization, they exhibit a satisfactory oxygen evolution reaction performance that can be attributed to the synergistic effect between Fe and Ni to accelerate the proton-coupled electron transfer kinetics. The exploration of non-noble metal electrocatalysts with high catalytic activity and stability for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) has become particularly urgent. Here, FeNi-based Prussian blue analogues (PBAs) were obtained by adding different solvents, where PBA particles preferentially grew on the surface plane/edge of coordination polymer precursor (Ni-ABDC) with various polarities. This resulted in the formation of FeNi-PBA-plane/edge morphologies, respectively. Notably, on account of more exposed PBAs, FeNi nanoparticles were uniformly supported on the porous N-doped carbon nanomaterials. Among them, the calcined FeNi-NC-800 underwent an interesting pre-activation process and exhibited a low overpotential of 281 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and a small Tafel slope of 82 mV dec −1 in 1.0 m KOH. This bimetallic sample showed superior OER activity and stability in comparison with control materials, which could be attributed to its abundant FeNi nanoparticles, high nitrogen content, large specific surface area, and synergistic effects between Fe and Ni atoms. In addition, relevant theoretical calculation on the optimal catalyst, FeNi-NC-800, further demonstrated its efficient OER performance with effective Fe-doping in the Ni-based oxyhydroxides.

The design of advanced metal–organic framework (MOF) catalysts for solar-driven conversion of CO 2 into syngas (CO/H 2 mixture) is beneficial. Herein, the design of a joint MOF heterostructure consisting of orderly assembled Co II - and Co III -based Prussian blue analogs (PBAs) driven by their spontaneous lattice match in the growth process is reported. As-prepared H/Co III -PBA@Co II -PBA cage is a mesocrystal and exhibits superior photocatalytic syngas production activity ( V CO up to 50.56 mmol g −1 h −1 , CO/H 2 = 1:1), which is among the best state-of-the-art heterogeneous photocatalysts in the literature. Theoretical calculations and experimental results confirm that Co III -PBA exerts a stronger affinity for CO 2 molecules than Co II -PBA, thus serving as the active site. The built-in electric field in the Co III -PBA@Co II -PBA heterojunction can direct the fast transport of photogenerated electrons from Co II -PBA to the active Co III -PBA. In the present case, the engineering of electronics outweighs morphological engineering to enhance the catalytic properties of Co III -MOF@Co II -MOF for CO 2 -to-syngas conversion.

Using a deposition-reduction method, Mg/MOF nanocomposites were prepared as composites of Mg and metal-organic framework materials (MOFs = ZIF-8, ZIF-67 and MOF-74). The addition of MOFs can enhance the hydrogen storage properties of Mg. For example, within 5000 s, 0.6 wt%, 1.2 wt%, 2.7 wt%, 3.7 wt% of hydrogen were released from Mg, Mg/MOF-74, Mg/ZIF-8, Mg/ZIF-67, respectively. Activation energy values of 198.9 kJ mol −1 H 2 , 161.7 kJ mol −1 H 2 , 192.1 kJ mol −1 H 2 were determined for the Mg/ZIF-8, Mg/ZIF-67, Mg/MOF-74 hydrides, which are 6 kJ mol −1 H 2 , 43.2 kJ mol −1 H 2 , and 12.8 kJ mol −1 H 2 lower than that of Mg hydride, respectively. Moreover, the cyclic stability characterizing Mg hydride was significantly improved when adding ZIF-67. The hydrogen storage capacity of the Mg/ZIF-67 nanocomposite remained unchanged, even after 100 cycles of hydrogenation/dehydrogenation. This excellent cyclic stability may have resulted from the core-shell structure of the Mg/ZIF-67 nanocomposite.

Integrating metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) of different components or structures together and exploiting them as electrochemical sensors for electrochemical sensing has aroused great interest. Furthermore, the incorporation of noble metals with MOFs is conducive to the improvement of catalytic performance. In this work, Pd@UiO-66-on-ZIF-L nanomaterials were successfully synthesised onto a self-supported flexible carbon cloth (Pd@UiO-66-on-ZIF-L/CC) through a novel strategy called MOF-on-MOF. Then, Au nanoparticles were electrodeposited onto Pd@UiO-66-on-ZIF-L/CC to obtain Au–Pd@UiO-66-on-ZIF-L/CC, which can serve as an excellent electrocatalyst for the reduction of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). The obtained flower-like Pd@UiO-66-on-ZIF-L/CC hybrid MOF changes the structure of the monomeric MOF alone and adds more attachment sites. The synergy of the bimetals greatly improved the catalytic performance of the as-developed sensor. Electrochemical experiment results show that the proposed sensor based on Au–Pd@UiO-66-on-ZIF-L/CC has an extended linear range from 1 μM to 19.6 mM with a sensitivity of 390 μA mM−1 cm−2, and a low limit of detection (LOD) of 21.2 nM (S/N = 3). Moreover, it has good anti-interference, reproducibility, repeatability and excellent stability. Furthermore, the real-time in situ detection of H2O2 secreted from human adenocarcinomic alveolar basal epithelial cells (A549 cells) was achieved by culturing cells on Au–Pd@UiO-66-on-ZIF-L/CC, which indicates the potential of the sensor for applications in cancer pathology. Both the synthesis strategy and the sensor design provide new methods and ideas for the production of ultrasensitive H2O2 electrochemical sensors.

Congo Red (CR) is a toxic compound posing serious health issues and to the aquatic ecosystem. To solve the problems of low efficiency of single MOF adsorbents and to improve adsorption capacity of this class of adsorbents, in this research a new strategy is adopted to prepare ZIF-67@Cu-MOF composite with a core-shell structure employing in situ growth strategy with carboxyl linkage wherein Co 2+ ions were anchored onto Cu-MOF surface to efficiently remove the Congo Red, a pollutant from wastewater sources via adsorption. Influence of solution pH, contact duration, initial concentration, temperature, and the presence of coexisting ions on adsorption performance of CR was investigated to remove the dye up to 98.9 % in 5 min. The Langmuir isotherm model suggested the maximum adsorption capacity of 3494.06 mg/g at 25 °C. Thermodynamic analysis confirmed adsorption was spontaneous and endothermic (ΔG ranging from −35.35 to −43.55 kJ/mol, ΔH = 85.82 kJ/mol). The CR removal efficiency remained at 94.8 % after 5 consecutive adsorption-desorption cycles confirmed that ZIF-67@Cu-MOF composite had the potential ability to remove CR molecules from wastewater sources.

The construction of well-defined MOF-on-MOF heterostructures is significantly challenged by lattice mismatch between dissimilar frameworks. Here, we report a precisely controlled core–shell MIL-101(Fe)@CoZn-ZIF composite with a uniform “one-to-one” encapsulation structure, overcoming the intrinsic incompatibility between octahedral MIL-101(Fe) cores and tetrahedral Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework (ZIF) shells. This achievement is realized through two synergistic strategies: nucleation kinetics modulation and surfactant-mediated interfacial engineering. Systematic optimization of key parameters, including the Co 2+ Zn 2+ to Fe 3+ molar ratio (120:1), precursor concentration (150 mM), and ligand to metal ratio, enabled dimensional matching and uniform coating. Moreover, surfactants (Cetyltrimethylammonium bromide and Polyvinylpyrrolidone) effectively reduced the heterogeneous nucleation barrier, promoting oriented ZIF deposition onto MIL-101(Fe). Comprehensive characterization (SEM, TEM, XRD, FTIR, TGA, XPS and BET) confirms the well-defined hybrid architecture. When the PVP-mediated composite material was applied in sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes for degrading methylene blue and p-nitrophenol, it demonstrated enhanced performance and stability compared to the pristine CoZn-ZIF. This work establishes a generalizable approach for integrating topologically mismatched MOFs, advancing the design of multifunctional materials for catalysis and related fields.

A template-assisted approach was employed to synthesize a MOF-on-MOF derived catalyst for the selective oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) to produce 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA). Characterization revealed that the catalyst forms a cobalt–manganese metal oxide composite phase with a hierarchical porous structure and uniformly distributed Co/Mn active sites. The oxygen vacancies work together with the Lewis acid sites to gradually oxidize the hydroxyl and aldehyde groups in 5-HMF. In the context of reaction conditions that have been identified as optimal (140 °C, 6 h, 50 mg catalyst, 5.88 mol L−1 H2O2), the yield of FDCA was 87.55%, accompanied by 5-HMF conversion rate of 98.66%. The catalyst exhibited exceptional cycling stability, sustaining an FDCA yield exceeding 75% across five cycles. Mechanism studies indicate that the Co–Mn bimetallic synergistic effect optimizes the reaction pathway through electron transfer and oxygen species activation, while the microporous structure prolongs the residence time of intermediates through confinement effect, promoting multi-step oxidation. Compared with the single-metal MOFs derived catalysts, this catalyst has significantly improved adsorption performance and oxidation efficiency, providing an efficient solution for the green synthesis of the bio-based polyester monomer FDCA.

The merits of the elastic stiffness and flexible structure of 0D metal organic frameworks (0D MOFs) and the super-lubrication structure of 2D MOFs were conductive to improve the tribological performance of oil. In present paper, the spherical structure ZIF-7 nanoparticles and flake-like 2D Ni-BDC nanosheets were incorporated into the “ball-on-plate” heterostructure by in-situ synthesis route. The composition and structure of ZIF-7/2D Ni-BDC heterostructure were determined by a series of characterization technologies, which proved the spherical structure ZIF-7 nanoparticles grown on the surface of 2D Ni-BDC nanosheets. The ZIF-7/2D Ni-BDC heterostructure as additive in oil exhibited the better dispersibility and stability. The tribological experiments demonstrated that the ZIF-7/2D Ni-BDC heterostructure added into liquid paraffin effectively reduced by 39.7% in the friction coefficient and 18.03% in wear scar diameter at 0.08 wt% addition relative to pure liquid paraffin. The worn surface and debris characterizations confirmed that the “ball-on-plate” heterostructure could yield the synergistic effect of “rolling” and “interlayered sliding” in the friction process, thus significantly improving the lubrication performance of liquid paraffin.

The detection of blood glucose level receives much attention, because diabetes has become one of the significant threats to human health worldwide. In this paper, we described a novel core-shell MOF@MOF composite-based electrochemical sensor for nonenzymatic glucose sensing in alkaline media. The core-shell UiO-67@Ni-MOF composites were synthesized by internal extended growth of shell Ni-MOF on the core UiO-67 under polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) regulation. In the sensor system, UiO-67 with large specific surface area and good conductivity was used to accelerate the rate of electron transfer of UiO-67@Ni-MOF. Ni-MOF served as an electrocatalytic material due to excellent electrochemical activity toward glucose oxidation . The morphology, structure, and electrochemical performance of UiO-67@Ni-MOF composites were characterized. To demonstrate the detection performance of the UiO-67@Ni-MOF composite-based sensor, it was successfully used for nonenzymatic glucose sensing. The results indicated that UiO-67@Ni-MOF composites exhibited high electrocatalytic activity toward glucose oxidation compared with individual UiO-67 and Ni-MOF. Moreover, the sensor possessed high sensitivity and selectivity for real-time amperometric detection of glucose. It performed glucose level detection in human serum samples with acceptable reliability and accuracy. The present work suggested that the as-fabricated sensor is promising for nonenzymatic glucose sensing in real samples and holds great potential as an alternative tool for the rapid diagnosis of diabetes and for monitoring blood glucose levels daily.

The effective capture of radioactive iodine vapor is crucial for radiation safety during spent fuel reprocessing. However, current materials used for iodine vapor capture have limitations such as low adsorption efficiency and poor stability, which hinder the effectiveness. To address this issue, an efficient, stable, recoverable and heterogeneous MOF-on-MOF [NH 2 -MIL-101-on-NH 2 -UiO-66] adsorbent was prepared using the epitaxial growth strategy. The adsorbent was extensively characterized with various technologies including FT-IR, XPS and XRD, and batch experiments were conducted to evaluate the performance in iodine gas adsorption. Results showed that the adsorption capacity of NH 2 -MIL-101-on-NH 2 -UiO-66 reached 1930 mg/g at 80 °C and ambient pressure, outperforming the parent MOFs, with a 20–33% higher adsorption rate and a 1.52–2.74 times higher adsorption capacity. Notably, the adsorbent exhibited superior performance compared to commercial silver-exchanged zeolite and other MOFs adsorbents. The excellent adsorption performance of this adsorbent can be attributed to its abundant adsorption sites and well-defined pore structure. Additionally, the adsorbent displayed good thermal stability, withstanding temperatures up to 360℃. Overall, this study provides a highly effective material for iodine vapor adsorption and contributes to the understanding of novel MOF-on-MOF architectures and the applications.
