Enhanced Dielectric Properties of P(VDF-TrFE-CTFE)/PMMA Composites with MWCNTs@SiO2 Core–Shell Fillers

Yangjie Zhong,Chengming Tang,Jidong Sun,Yafeng Zhang,Jiaxin Yu

Dielectric materials with superior dielectric properties are pivotal for enhancing the performance of electrowetting-on-dielectric (EWOD) devices. In this work, MWCNTs@SiO2 core–shell-structured fillers were fabricated by coating multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) with a uniform SiO2 outer layer. This innovative core–shell structure was incorporated into a poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene-chlorotrifluoroethylene) (P(VDF-TrFE-CTFE)) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) organic matrix to fabricate composite films with enhanced dielectric properties. The incorporation of core–shell fillers significantly enhanced the microcapacitor effect and Maxwell–Wagner–Sillars interface polarization. At a low filler loading of 4 wt %, the composite achieved a high dielectric constant of 25.4 (at 100 Hz), representing a 108.2% enhancement compared to the pristine polymer matrix, while maintaining a low dielectric loss as low as 0.05. Furthermore, the SiO2 shell effectively mitigated inhomogeneous electric field distribution induced by dielectric constant mismatch, reducing field distortion and consequently enhancing the breakdown strength. Notably, under a DC voltage below 50 V, a high contact angle modulation range of 38.3° was achieved, representing a 151.97% enhancement compared to the pristine polymer matrix. These findings provide a new strategy for developing high-performance dielectric materials for EWOD applications.

Absorption-Dominant Electromagnetic Shielding in Ultrathin PLA Composite Films Through Engineered MWCNTs@Ag and Multilayer Architecture

Xintu Lin,Ruijie Jin,XinYi Li,Jingjing Kou,Ruilan Xu,Xin Dai,Shangxi Zhang,Yong Peng,Yuejun Liu

Low-thickness, eco-friendly electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials with high shielding effectiveness (SE) are urgently needed to address escalating electromagnetic pollution in miniaturized electronic devices. Herein, we synthesized silver nanoparticle-decorated multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs@Ag) via a rapid solvent-free method and integrated them into poly(lactic acid) (PLA) matrices to fabricate composite films through solution casting. The resulting PLA/MWCNTs@Ag composite film containing 10 wt% MWCNTs@Ag achieves an average EMI SE of 18.59 dB at a thickness of approximately 95 μm, with the shielding mechanism dominated by surface reflection. To strategically control EMI attenuation pathways, multilayered architectures were engineered using layer-by-layer solution casting while maintaining identical filler content. Systematic analysis reveals that both thickness and layer number significantly influence EMI shielding performance. Notably, a multilayer film with a thickness of approximately 155 μm and seven layers exhibits an average EMI SE of 24.43 dB with an absorption-dominated mechanism, showing a 31.41% enhancement over single-layer counterparts. This performance transition from reflection to absorption dominance originates from optimized impedance matching, enhanced interfacial polarization, multiple internal reflections, and reconstructed conductive networks enabled by structural design. The synergy between hierarchical structure engineering and hybrid filler incorporation provides new insights for developing sustainable high-performance EMI shielding materials.

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering sensor based on MWCNTs@ZnO/Ag to detect the enrofloxacin in pork

Yiheng Yuan,Xishun Peng,Cunwei Wang,Haili Zhang,Caizhen Zu,Zhangyu Zhou,Zhongchen Bai

The threats of antibiotic residues to human health and the environment have become more and more severe due to the overuse of antibiotics in agriculture. Here, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were used to prepare MWCNTs@ZnO/Ag substrate by a simple two-step electrochemical deposition process to detect the enrofloxacin (ENR) residues in pork. The coral-like MWCNTs with a large surface area could promote ENR adsorption and provide more sites for growing the ZnO/Ag nanostructures. Moreover, ZnO/Ag nanostructures could not only facilitate the electron transfer to increase Raman intensity but also improve the stability of MWCNTs@ZnO/Ag substrate. Thus, the MWCNTs@ZnO/Ag substrate could easily recognize ENR molecules at a low concentration of 5 × 10 −10  M due to the stronger charge transfer effect between the substrates and analytes. In addition, the limit of detection of ENR residues in pork samples by using MWCNTs@ZnO/Ag substrate was up to 5.87 nM. The SERS sensor of the MWCNTs@ZnO/Ag substrate has a high sensitivity and long-term stability for the detection of antibiotic residues in food, which could be applied in fields of food safety.

Preparation of Wave Absorbing Coatings Blended Waterborne Polyurethane with Nano Fe3O4/MWCNTs and Their Electromagnetic Absorption Properties

Suwei Gao,Yucheng Wang,Liang Li,Xi Wang,Qiaofeng Wei,Shuyue Zhu,Rangtong Liu

The development of high-performance electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorbing materials aims to achieve high-intensity electromagnetic attenuation and wide effective absorption bandwidth (EAB), but in fact, it is challenging for them to optimize synchronously. In this paper, through the hydrothermal method, an EMW absorber was synthesized by loading nanomagnetic Fe3O4 on multi walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), of which the structure and properties depend on precursor (FeCl3·6H2O) addition and MWCNTs modification. Using this absorber, a coating named Fe3O4/MWCNTs/WPU with good EMW absorption performance was prepared with waterborne polyurethane (WPU). By characterizing the structure and properties of the absorbers and coatings, it was found that the optimal distribution of Fe3O4 particles presented when adding 1.0 g FeCl3·6H2O. After MWCNTs acidizing modification, Fe3O4 particles present on them with a “bead-chain” like uniformly dense structure, and the coating exhibited a wider EAB of 8.64 GHz at a thickness of 3.0 mm and a smaller reflection loss of −52.61 dB at a thickness of 4.0 mm. These findings effectively achieve the balance between EAB and intensity of EMW, and reveal some principles for optimizing electromagnetic absorption, providing important basis for designing new materials with wide bandwidth and strong absorption capacity.

Mechanical and flame retardant enhancement of EVA/MWCNTs neutron shielding composites irradiated with high-energy electron beam

Wang Guo-hui,Wu Guang-hao,He Man-li,Xu Tian-han,Liu Yun-fu,Yao Chu-qing,Dai Yao-dong

Using a melt-mixing technique, ethylene–vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymers based composites containing Multi-Wall Carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), aluminum trihydrate (ATH), zinc borate (ZB), and gadolinium oxide (Gd 2 O 3 ) were fabricated. Then, the as-prepared samples were irradiated with an electron beam (EB) at the dose range varied from 0 to 275 kGy. Moreover, we investigated the properties of irradiated and unirradiated samples. Morphological observation showed good dispersion of MWCNTs and other additives in EVA. Furthermore, the gel content, mechanical properties, the limit oxygen index (LOI) values of irradiated composites increased to 28.4% after 250 kGy after irradiated. All the conclusions indicated that the comprehensive properties of the WMCNTs/EVA composites were improved by using high energy electron beam irradiation.

Highly efficient dye-sensitized solar cell with a novel nanohybrid film of Cu2ZnSnS4-MWCNTs as counter electrode

Hui Chen,Jinfeng Wang,Chenchen Jia,Junpeng Mou,Lei Zhu

For the purpose of increasing the power conversion efficiency (PCE) meanwhile decreasing the cost of dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC), Cu 2 ZnSnS 4 - multiwall carbon nanotubes (CZTS-MWCNTs) nanohybrid Pt-free counter electrode (CE) was prepared via a facile fabricating route. In brief, CZTS nanoparticles were synthesized by a solvothermal method and the composite film was fabricated by spin coating the aqueous solution of the composite. The short-circuit current density and PCE of the DSSC with CZTS-MWCNTs CE were found to be 16.62   mA   cm −2 and 9.04%, respectively. But the corresponding values were 15.42   mA   cm −2 and 8.74% for a DSSC with a pure Pt-CE. This is owing to the synergistic effect of the intrinsic superior electrocatalytic activity of the CZTS nanoparticles and highly specific surface area and high electrical conductivity of the MWCNTs . The presence and distribution of CZTS-MWCNTs on the CE were characterized by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning electron microscope (SEM), respectively. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectra (EIS) were examined for confirming the high electrocatalytic efficiency of this nanohybrid system.

MnOx-TiO2 and Sn doped MnOx-TiO2 selective reduction catalysts prepared using MWCNTs as the pore template

Chong Xie,Shenghui Yang,Jianwen Shi,Beibei Li,Chen Gao,Chunming Niu

The stability of MnO x based low temperature SCR catalysts remained to be a serious issue. This report explored use of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) network with uniform structure as a “rigid” pore template for synthesis of mesoporous MnO x -TiO 2 SCR catalyst with high surface area and high stability. The results showed that MWCNT network imposed MnO x -TiO 2 catalyst a mesoporous porosity with a narrow pore size distribution centered on ∼13.2   nm and a surface area of 131.6   m 2   g −1 stabilized at 500   °C. The mesoporous structure was formed by interconnected nanoparticles, comprised of crystallized rutile TiO 2 core surrounded by amorphous MnOx , with an average diameter of ∼8   nm. The catalyst exhibited an excellent low temperature SCR activity and selectivity as well as high resistance to deactivation and poison by H 2 O and SO 2 . SnO 2 modification led to degradation of catalytic performance in low temperature (60–180   °C) side, but improvement at high temperature side (240–360   °C), especially at high gas velocity, which can be attributed to change in structure, reactivity of MnO x and surface acidity induced by SnO 2 addition.

Metal–Organic Framework-Derived Co3O4@MWCNTs Polyhedron as Cathode Material for a High-Performance Aluminum-Ion Battery

Xiang Xiao,Mingyong Wang,Jiguo Tu,Yiwa Luo,Shuqiang Jiao

Because of the unprecedented development and popularization of portable electronics, electric vehicles, and smart grid, rechargeable batteries have become one of the hottest topics within worldwide research for the past decade. Among all of the proposed nonlithium-based battery systems, rechargeable aluminum-ion batteries (RAIBs) are considered as a promising candidate due to aluminum’s abundance and safety. Naturally, exploring compatible and high-performance cathode materials for RAIBs becomes a key issue for pushing RAIBs from lab-level to industrialization. In this work, we report a novel high-performance RAIB system using MOF-derived Co3O4@MWCNTs polyhedron composite as cathode. The well-defined morphology of MOF-derived Co3O4 and enhancement brought by MWCNTs allow Co3O4@MWCNTs polyhedrons to deliver an initial discharge capacity of ca. 266.3 mAh g–1, and the reversible specific capacity can reach 125 mAh g–1 at 100 mA g–1 over 150 cycles. The energy storage mechanism has been verified to be a reversible valence-change reaction between Co3O4 and Co. These findings can enlighten future research regrading MOF derivatives as advanced cathode materials for RAIBs.

Non-invasive smartphone-based saliva glucose sensing system using CuO NPs/MWCNTs composite-modified screen-printed electrodes

Qiong-qiong Ren,Chong-yang Zhang,Hao-jie Li,Lin-yan Xie,Xu-ming Sun,Qing-jun Liu

To address the limitations of traditional invasive glucose monitoring, including pain, infection risk, and poor patient compliance, this study develops a non-invasive, smartphone-based electrochemical sensing system for saliva glucose detection using a CuO NPs/MWCNTs composite-modified screen-printed electrode. The CuO nanoparticles (CuO NPs) were derived from copper metal-organic frameworks (Cu-MOFs) via high-temperature calcination, yielding a material with a high specific surface area and abundant pore structures that provide numerous glucose-reactive sites. Given the low glucose concentration in saliva, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were further incorporated to enhance the electrochemical performance. The developed sensor exhibited excellent glucose response in 0.1 M NaOH, with a wide linear range of 0.05–3 mM, a sensitivity of 0.51 mA mM −1  cm −2 , and a low detection limit of 8.94 μM (S/N = 3). Furthermore, the sensor demonstrates outstanding repeatability, long-term stability, and good anti-interference capability. In practical saliva sample tests, the system successfully tracked dynamic changes in human saliva glucose after oral glucose intake, showing good consistency with blood glucose trends. These results highlight the feasibility and preliminary potential of this platform for non-invasive glucose trend monitoring, with clinical validation in diabetic populations reserved for future work.

Thickness-dependent dielectric evolution and vertically porous engineering of flame-sprayed WPU/MWCNTs/CS microwave-absorbing coatings

Pengyu Li,Xiaohua Feng,Yi Liu,Hua Li

Thick microwave-absorbing coatings are essential for electromagnetic stealth and protection applications. However, during thermal spraying processes, the microstructural evolution induced by increasing coating thickness and cumulative thermal exposure significantly alter the dielectric response and absorption performance – a phenomenon that has not been systematically clarified. This study systematically examines the thickness-dependent dielectric behavior of TPU/MWCNTs coatings fabricated via flame spraying, revealing that absorption performance deteriorates sharply beyond a critical thickness of 50 μm. Specifically, as the coating thickness increases from 50 μm to 138 μm, the minimum reflection loss ( RL min ) decreases from −24.8 dB to −14.1 dB, and the effective absorption bandwidth ( EAB ) narrows from 5.2 GHz to 1.0 GHz. To address this issue, an innovative porous structure engineering strategy is proposed, wherein WPU replaces TPU and a water/ethanol co-solvent is employed to promote the formation of vertical pores within the coating. This approach significantly enhances the connectivity of conductive fillers along the thickness direction, effectively balancing polarization loss and conductive loss while optimizing both impedance matching and attenuation. The optimized porous coating achieves an exceptional RL min of −50 dB, an EAB of 5.2 GHz, and a maximum RCS of 29.8 dBm 2 . This structural design strategy not only mitigates the performance degradation in thick coatings but also provides a viable route for fabricating lightweight, broadband, and highly efficient microwave-absorbing coating.

Synergistic specific recognition of melatonin in milk using biocompatible molecularly imprinted electrochemical sensor based on MWCNTs/CS

Hao-Xiang Wen,Fu-Lan Xiao,Jia-Yi Huang,Jun-Xuan Fu,Lian-Di Zhou,Qi-Hui Zhang,Chun-Su Yuan

An electrochemical MIP sensor for MT was developed. • MT recognition via hydrogen bonding/π-π stacking and electrostatic interactions. • This sensor was simple, rapid, sensitive, and highly selective. • The sensor achieves the detection of MT in milk and serum. The detection of melatonin (MT) is essential for the clinical diagnosis of mental illnesses. In this study, a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was modified with carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and chitosan (CS) to enhance its electrical conductivity and adhesiveness. L-tyrosine (L-tyr) was selected as the functional monomer and electropolymerized with MT to form the biocompatible MIP-MT imprinted layer. The specific recognition of MT by MIP-MT is facilitated by hydrogen bonding and π - π interactions between L-tyr and MT. Additionally, the electrostatic interaction between positively charged CS and negatively charged MT further contributes to the synergistic recognition with MIP-MT. Under optimized conditions, the IF value of MIP-MT reached 3.6. Furthermore, MIP-MT exhibited a detection limit of 0.0979 μM for MT and showed a linear relationship within the range of 0.1–100 μM. MIP-MT demonstrated recovery rates of 93.86%–99.14% in milk, presenting an innovative approach for disorders associated with MT biomarker levels. Preparation of PVA/PEI/MWCNTs-COOH conductive hydrogels for strain sensors using a synergistic post-processing technique

Wang Ziyu,Wu Ranran,He Yanyang,Hu Yufang,Wang Sui,Mao Jie

Addressing the critical challenge of balancing mechanical robustness and electrical conductivity in hydrogels for wearable sensors, this study proposes a synergistic processing strategy that integrates freeze-thaw cycling, thermal annealing, and the Hofmeister effect-induced salting. A ternary composite hydrogel was prepared with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as the matrix, polyethyleneimine (PEI) to enhance crosslinking and biocompatibility, and carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs-COOH) to improve conductivity. The optimized freeze-thawing-annealing (100 °C, 20 min) and salting-out (1.5 M NaCl) process resulted in a densely cross-linked network featuring significantly enhanced crystallinity and a homogeneous, pore-free microstructure. This hierarchical structure confers upon the hydrogel outstanding mechanical properties: tensile strength of 4.15 MPa, toughness of 17.73 MJ/m 3 , elastic modulus of 2.84 MPa, and a high fatigue threshold of 117.4 J/m 2 . Simultaneously, the electrical conductivity of the hydrogel reached 0.449 S/m. The hydrogel demonstrated excellent strain/pressure sensing capabilities, featuring tunable gauge factors (GF = 0.87–2.12 within the 0-100% strain range) and pressure sensitivity (0.145 kPa -1 below 2 kPa). The practical applicability of the hydrogel was verified by reliably monitoring various human motions in real-time. This research offers a scalable and effective material design strategy for next-generation flexible electronics.
