High-energy density and low cost magnesium nanoparticles (Mg NPs)-based material are being sought to meet increasing capable of hydrogen (H 2 ) storage demand. Here, a kind of air-stable Mg NPs supported on porous structured multi-walled carbon tubes-polymethyl methacrylate (MWCNTs-PMMA) template is prepared owing to reversible well-distributed, dispersed and small-sized Mg/MgH 2 NPs. The aim is to improve the H 2 storage capacity, hydrogen sorption kinetics and thermodynamics of nano Mg-based system without using catalyst. The organic Mg precursor was directly in-situ reduced to metallic Mg NPs in MWCNTs-PMMA template by lithium naphthalide. The size distribution of reduced Mg nanoparticles is around 3.6 ± 0.2 nm, confirmed by XRD and TEM analyses, which is due to the strong interaction between Mg NPs and MWCNTs-PMMA via PMMA binding Mg 2+ , as well as the confinement of porous template hindered the growth and agglomeration of Mg NPs. Moreover, except H 2 , O 2 and H 2 O molecules can't infiltrate the porous structure of MWCNTs-PMMA resulted in the presence of air stable Mg NPs in the MWCNTs-PMMA. The work provides a new scope to prepare nano metal-based composite for H 2 storage.

The two-dimensional (2D) ultrathin Mg-Al layered double hydroxide modified by magnetic Fe 3 O 4 (Fe 3 O 4 /Mg-Al LDH) was successfully synthesized via the co-precipitation method. The Fe 3 O 4 /Mg-Al LDH not only exhibits superior separation efficiency of charge carriers but also possesses signally enhanced photocatalytic activity for CO 2 reduction than Mg-Al LDH. The as-prepared Fe 3 O 4 /Mg-Al LDH affords the CO and CH 4 generation rate of 442.2 µmol g −1 h −1 and 223.9 µmol g −1 h −1 . The enhanced reduction CO 2 activity mainly comes from synergetic effect of Fe 3 O 4 and ultrathin Mg-Al LDH. And Fe 3 O 4 can increase the separation efficiency of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, and ultrathin Mg-Al LDH can reduce the transmission resistance of charge carriers. Moreover, a detailed mechanism insight of Fe 3 O 4 /Mg-Al LDH for CO 2 reduction is also investigated by a series of characterization methods and activity experiments. This work offers a simple and environment-friendly approach to develop recycled photocatalysts in CO 2 reduction treatment.

Metallic 1T MoS 2 greatly benefits the supercapacitance of MoS 2 due to its considerably higher conductivity as compared to semiconducting 2H MoS 2 . Alkali metals, such as Li, Na and K, are always used to prepare 1T MoS 2 through intercalation of alkali metal ions into the interlayer of 2H MoS 2 . Nevertheless, the influences of the alkali-earth metals as the guest in the interlayer of MoS 2 on its structure and electrochemical capacitor performance are rarely investigated. Herein, we introduced hydrated Mg ions as the guest into MoS 2 nanosheets. The interlayer spacing was increased to 1.144 nm after the introduction of hydrated Mg ions, larger than that of the pristine MoS 2 (0.620 nm) and restacking MoS 2 (0.626 nm). The enlarged interlayer spacing can accommodate more ions during intercalation process. Moreover, the 1T phase concentration after the introduction of hydrated Mg ions was as high as ~ 90%, which benefits the charge transfer during the charging/discharging processes. Consequently, the specific capacitance of the MoS 2 with Mg guest ions as well as the energy densities and power densities was greatly improved as compared to those of the restacking MoS 2 or pristine MoS 2 counterparts. The present work not only demonstrated a new strategy for engineering the physical properties and improving the electrochemical performance of MoS 2 supercapacitor electrode through pre-intercalation of alkali-earth metal ions in the interlayer of MoS 2 , but also has directive significance for the design of other layered electrode materials for energy storage systems.

Acid drainage (AD) poses a significant concern for water pollution due to its strong acidity and the toxicity of its various contaminants (e.g., heavy metal ions). In order to minimize the harmful effects of AD, the acidity must be neutralized and the contaminants be removed. The capacity of calcined Mg/Al layered double hydroxide (Mg/Al-CLDH) for simultaneously neutralizing the pH of AD and removing various heavy metal cations and oxyanions (Cr(VI) and phosphate) was studied herein. The interactions throughout co-removal between metal cations (in short M) and oxyanions were particularly investigated. In the solution with only M, Mg/Al-CLDH was capable of neutralizing solution pH and removing M. The reconstruction of LDH from Mg/Al-CLDH produced OH – to neutralize pH and partially remove M through precipitation. FT-IR results suggested that forming H-bonds with the reconstructed LDH (R-LDH) might also contribute to M removal. In the solution containing both M and oxyanions, M and oxyanions could mutually affect their removal efficiency by Mg/Al-CLDH. M weakened the removal capacities of Cr(VI) and phosphate, because it could compete for adsorption sites on R-LDH. Cr(VI) and phosphate showed complex effects on the removal of M: Low concentrations of Cr(VI) promoted the removal of M by providing extra adsorption sites; high concentrations of Cr(VI), however, had the opposite effect, as a high concentration of Cr(VI) might largely occupy the adsorption sites on R-LDH. By contrast, phosphate inhibited the removal of M considerably, which might be ascribed to its strong buffering ability that maintained a relatively strong acidic nature of the solution. Our results, for the first time, showed that Mg/Al-CLDH is particularly suitable for the treatment of AD containing various contaminants.

Graphical Grounds for defecting : Superior photocatalytic activity of Mg-doped Ta 3 N 5 is attributed to the accumulation of oxygen species and the elimination of nitrogen vacancies. The oxygen species lead to the formation of delocalized shallow donor states near the conduction band minimum whereas nitrogen vacancies are responsible for localized deep states in the band gap of Ta 3 N 5 . Tantalum nitride (Ta 3 N 5 ) highlights an intriguing paradigm for converting solar energy into chemical fuels. However, its photocatalytic properties are strongly governed by various intrinsic/extrinsic defects. In this work, we successfully prepared a series of Mg-doped mesoporous Ta 3 N 5 using a simple method. The photocatalytic and photoelectrochemical properties were investigated from the viewpoint of how defects such as accumulation of oxygen and nitrogen vacancies contribute to the catalytic activity. Our findings suggest that Mg doping is accompanied by an accumulation of oxygen species and a simultaneous elimination of nitrogen vacancies in Ta 3 N 5 . These oxygen species in Ta 3 N 5 induce delocalized shallow donor states near the conduction band minimum and are responsible for high electron mobility. The superior photocatalytic activity of Mg-doped Ta 3 N 5 can then be understood by the improved electron–hole separation as well as the lack of nitrogen vacancies, which often serve as charge-recombination centers.

The tailored doping levels towards the band gap tunability are one of the challenges to push forward the potential application of one-dimensional (1D) ZnO nanostructures in the opto/electric nanodevices . In present work, we reported the exploration of Mg-doped ZnO nanofibers via electrospinning of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), Zn(CH 3 COO) 2 (ZnAc) and Mg(CH 3 COO) 2 (MgAc), followed by calcination in air. The resultant products were systematically characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The optical measurements (UV–vis) of the Mg-doped ZnO nanofibers suggested that the optical band gaps of the ZnO nanofibers could be tuned from 3.33 to 3.40 eV as a function of the Mg doing levels. This tunability of the band gap of ZnO nanofibers with an intentional impurity could eventually be useful for optoelectronic applications .

Spinel Mg(Al 1− x Ga x ) 2 O 4 ( x = 0–1) solid solutions were synthesized via solid-state method. Replacement of Al 3+ by Ga 3+ in MgAl 2 O 4 gave rise to the expansion of the lattice, as well as blueshifts of FT-IR and Raman peaks. The homogeneous solid solutions, high relative densities, large grain sizes, and compact microstructures resulted in excellent microwave dielectric properties for spinel Mg(Al 1− x Ga x ) 2 O 4 ( x = 0.6) ceramics sintered at 1485°C: that is, ε r = 8.87, Q × f = 107 000 GHz (at 14.8 GHz), and τ f = −16 ppm/°C. Spinel-structured Mg(Al 1− x Ga x ) 2 O 4 ( x = 0–1) solid solutions possessed low sintering temperatures, wide temperature regions (~100°C), and small negative τ f values. These outstanding performance make Mg(Al, Ga) 2 O 4 a promising candidate material for millimeter-wave devices.

A series of Mg catalysts supported on SiO 2 were prepared by an incipient wetness impregnation method and tested for gas phase dehydrochlorination of 1,1,2-trichloroethane. It was found that these catalysts were very active and selective for the reaction. The catalytic performance depended on the Mg loading rather than the Mg precursors as the catalysts using Mg(NO 3 ) 2 ·6H 2 O and MgCl 2 ·6H 2 O as the precursors showed the similar performance. A catalyst containing 10 wt.% of Mg showed the best performance with a steady state TCE conversion of 92% and cis -dichloroethene selectivity of 91%. Moreover, characterizations of the catalysts revealed the formation of Cl-containing Mg species on the surface during the reaction. The analyses of the compositions of the stable catalysts under working conditions indicated a Cl/Mg ratio of 1, suggesting that Mg(OH)Cl could be the active sites for the reaction.

Treatment of wastewater containing low-concentration yet highly-expensive rare earth elements (REEs) is one of the vital issues in the REEs separation and refining industry. In this work, the interaction and related mechanism between self-supported flowerlike nano-Mg(OH)2 and low-concentration REEs wastewater were investigated. More than 99% REEs were successfully taken up by nano-Mg(OH)2. Further analysis revealed that the REEs could be collected on the surface of Mg(OH)2 as metal hydroxide nanoparticles (<5 nm). An ion-exchange model was proposed as a critical factor for both guaranteeing the reaction speed and maintaining the self-supported structure of the materials. In addition, a method was developed to further separate the immobilized REEs and the residual magnesium hydroxide by varying the solution pH. In a pilot-scale experiment, the REEs from practical wastewater were immobilized effectively at a high flow rate. We anticipate this work can provide a good example for the recycling of valuable REEs in practical industrial applications.

Magnesium batteries offer a safer alternative for next-generation battery technology due to their insusceptibility to dendrite deposition. Selective membranes tailored for magnesium-ion conduction will unlock further technological advancement. Herein, we demonstrate fluorine-free magnesiated sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (Mg-SPEEK) selective membranes capable of facilitating magnesium-ion conduction while effectively rejecting soluble organic species. These membranes demonstrate a reversible Mg plating and stripping Coulombic efficiency (CE) of 85.4% and an ionic conductivity of 3.3 × 10–4 S cm–1 at room temperature, surpassing those for a Mg-Nafion selective membrane. Theoretical density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that SPEEK possesses more localized charge centers along its backbone compared with Nafion, potentially facilitating enhanced ion conduction. Full cells assembled with Mg-SPEEK coupled with the organic cathode pyrene-4,5,9,10-tetraone (PTO) and Mg metal demonstrated significantly improved capacity retention as compared to those assembled with conventional nonselective separators.

Rechargeable aqueous magnesium ion batteries (AMIBs) are considered a promising energy storage system due to the relatively high energy density, excellent rate performance and reversibility, and absence of dendrite formation during cycling. However, the high surface charge density of Mg 2+ ions results in slow diffusion kinetics, and high voltage leads to excessive electrolyte decomposition at the electrode/aqueous electrolyte interface, thereby limiting the development of high-energy–density MIBs. In this work, we extend the electrochemical stability window of the aqueous electrolyte to 2.1 V by using a hybrid ion superconcentrated electrolyte at concentrations not achievable with Mg 2+ electrolytes alone. The AMIB with a water-in-salt (WIS) electrolyte delivers discharge capacities of up to 200.6 and 84.4 mAh g −1 , and energy densities of 170.1 and 68.1 Wh Kg −1 at 0.5 and 20 A g −1 , respectively, representing excellent rate performance, while retaining 85 % of the specific capacity after 2000 cycles. Additionally, we explore the corresponding electrochemical reaction mechanism, revealing the synergistic effect of Mg 2+ and Li + ions in the charge/discharge process, which supports the excellent electrochemical performance of AMIB.

Yellow nanorod Mg-MOF-74 was obtained through a solvothermal synthesis method. The XRD, N2adsorption–desorption isotherms, SEM, and TGA results suggest that the particle size of Mg-MOF-74 reaches 400 nm after the introduction of sodium acetate in the precursor of Mg-MOF-74. Furthermore, the morphology of Mg-MOF-74 changed from cauliflower- to rod-shaped particles. At the same time, the BET specific surface area and pore volume of Mg-MOF-74 also increased a lot. Then, the CO2dynamic adsorption capacity of Mg-MOF-74 was measured with a self-made fixed bed at 30 °C and a 0.1 bar CO2partial pressure. The results show that the CO2adsorption capacity of Mg-MOF-74-N2 reaches 3.67 mmol/g, and its CO2adsorption capacity remains unchanged after 10 CO2adsorption–desorption cycles.
