en This link goes to a English section zh This link goes to a Chinese section Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene, with its exceptional electrical conductivity, mechanical flexibility, and processability, compatible with wearable and integrated systems, plays a crucial role in advancing flexible photodetectors for intelligent perception systems and bioinspired artificial vision. However, its intrinsic narrow bandgap (< 0.1 eV) and the limited diversity of surface functionalization strategies severely constrain its use as a photosensitive layer in photodetectors. Herein, a surface engineering strategy is developed to covalently graft aminopropyl groups onto the surface of Ti 3 C 2 T x via Si-O-Ti linkages, thereby successfully widening its bandgap to 1.46 eV. The resulting Au/Ti 3 C 2 T x -NH 2 /Au flexible photodetector exhibits excellent bending resistance and demonstrates an ultrahigh on–off ratio of 10 12 under 808 nm laser excitation, along with an excellent responsivity of 3.72 × 10 4 A W −1 and high specific detectivity of 1.03 × 10 18 Jones. Additionally, the fabricated 147-pixel image sensor achieves high-contrast imaging of the “MAX” pattern, providing a new pathway for advancing high-performance flexible near-infrared photodetector technologies in bioinspired vision and flexible wearable image sensing. 摘要 en This link goes to a English section zh This link goes to a Chinese section 凭借其优异的导电性、机械柔韧性以及与可穿戴和集成系统兼容的加工性能,Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene在推动面向智能感知系统和仿生人工视觉的柔性光电探测器发展中发挥着重要作用。

Xue Yang,Yu Si,Shasha Jiang,Meng Zhuo,Tong Ren,Zijun Han,Xuetong Zhao,Xueyan Hou,Yongli Shi

In this study, an 808 nm near-infrared (NIR)-responsive hydrogel (NOR-MSN@MnO 2 -gel) was developed for the treatment of bacteria-infected wounds. The norfloxacin (NOR)-loaded manganese dioxide-modified mesoporous silica (NOR-MSN@MnO 2 ) nanoparticles were selected as a photothermal material and encapsulated in the furfuryl amine-modified hyaluronic acid hydrogel (HA-FA gel ). Studies found that MSN@MnO 2 -gel exhibited a three-dimensional porous network structure, favorable injectability, excellent water absorption & retention capacity, and desirable photothermal conversion efficiency. Benefiting from pH/NIR dual-responsive characteristics, NOR-MSN@MnO 2 -gel realized controllable NOR release and achieved efficient elimination of Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ) and Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) through synergistic photothermal therapy (PTT) and chemotherapy. In vivo infected wound studies demonstrated that NOR-MSN@MnO 2 -gel combined with NIR irradiation (NOR-MSN@MnO 2 -gel + NIR) could effectively inhibit bacterial growth, alleviate inflammation, accelerate re-epithelialization, and promote collagen deposition & angiogenesis, while maintaining satisfactory biological safety. Collectively, the NOR-MSN@MnO 2 -gel + NIR regimen provides a promising strategy for clinical treatment of bacterial infected wounds.

Real-time biosensing of Parkinson's disease biomarkers via NIR-activated upconversion nanoparticles

Jialin Liu,Nan Li,Yu Chen,Rui Pu,Wei Wei,Yunqi Lin,Lejing Li,Yao Lu,Jianhua Hao,Lihua Li

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder with incompletely understood pathophysiology, necessitating advanced tools for long-term dynamic biomarker monitoring. Current techniques lack noninvasive platforms capable of real-time multiparametric monitoring with high stability, sensitivity, and responsiveness. Here, we engineered core-shell-shell lanthanide-doped upconversion nanoparticles (cssUCNPs) through controlled Tm 3+ /Er 3+ gradient doping and crystal field symmetry modulation. This “sandwich” heterostructure design suppressed cross-relaxation, while Ca 2+ doping enhanced radiative transition efficiency. These modifications yielded a quantum yield improvement from 0.35 ± 0.014% to 3.27 ± 0.067%, representing a 9.3-fold enhancement, alongside a fluorescence intensity increase of 425.5-fold. The cssUCNPs exhibited exceptional photostability (>10,000 excitation cycles) and biocompatibility (>95% cell viability). Upon integration of Fluo4 with UCNPs, the system harnessed the luminescence resonance energy transfer effect to enable dual-responsive sensing of Ca 2+ (detection limit: 1 μM) and temperature (sensitivity: 0.5 K −1 ), thereby facilitating long-term tracing of Ca 2+ and temperature dynamics across PD pathological stages. Our results revealed that early-phase PD is characterized by rapid Ca 2+ and temperature surges, followed by oscillatory fluctuations in the middle phase, and eventual stabilization at elevated levels in the terminal phase. These dynamic profiles establish a direct link between mitochondrial dysfunction and Ca 2+ dysregulation, highlighting Ca 2+ flow-sensitive and thermally sensitive therapeutic targets for PD intervention.

NIR-II Light-Activated, ROS-Amplifying Janus Nanozymes for Multimodal Synergistic Therapy

Lin Fan,Shao Yong,Zhang Yuanqing

Nanozyme-catalyzed reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation has emerged as a promising strategy for advanced ROS-based therapeutics. However, achieving efficient ROS production with favorable catalytic kinetics in a confined microenvironment remains challenging. Herein, a cancer-targeting heterogeneous Janus nanozyme (JN, Cu 2– x Se–Au-TLS11a) was rationally fabricated via a facile modular synthesis and assembly. Upon near-infrared II (NIR-II) light irradiation, the well-designed JN realized multimodal synergistic anticancer effects via three coordinated mechanisms: (i) efficient photothermal conversion with a high efficiency of 61.9% for photothermal therapy (PTT); (ii) NIR-II-triggered hot-electron transfer from the Au domain to Cu 2– x Se promoted the generation of Cu + , which accelerated Fenton-like reactions to produce hydroxyl radicals (•OH); and (iii) NIR-II photoexcitation induced the formation of electron–hole (e – -h + ) pairs on the Janus nanostructure, enabling additional photocatalytic •OH generation. Under NIR-II light activation, the JNs, integrating photothermal, photoenhanced chemodynamic, and photocatalytic effects, demonstrated highly specific and potent in vitro anticancer efficacy, achieving an IC 50 value of approximately 12.5 μg mL –1 against HepG2 cells and reducing cell viability to 13.8%, thereby providing an innovative paradigm for designing spatiotemporally controlled, ROS-amplifying nanoplatforms toward precision cancer therapy.

Ti3C2/CuWO4/Pt nanozyme: photothermal-enhanced chemodynamic antibacterial effects induced by NIR

Simin Yuan,Lianyuan Ge,Yi Li,Xiaohong Wang,Zhongyuan Liu,Yang Cao,Linglin Yang

With the growing issue of antibiotic resistance, it has become increasingly crucial to develop highly efficient antimicrobial materials. While the single-component nanozyme systems exhibited some catalytic activity, their efficiency remains suboptimal. This study presents a Ti3C2/CuWO4/Pt hybrid nanozyme composed of photothermal agents and nanozymes, which leverages the photothermal effect to enhance nanozyme activity and achieve efficient antimicrobial effects. The composite material exhibited peroxidase (POD)-like catalytic activity, effectively converting hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) into hydroxyl radicals (·OH). Meanwhile, the Ti3C2/CuWO4/Pt material demonstrated high photothermal conversion ability, which not only promoted the generation of ·OH under near-infrared (NIR) light irradiation, but also facilitated copper (Cu2+) ions release from the CuWO4 nanozyme, thereby further augmenting its catalytic activity. After 4 to 5 min of light irradiation, the Ti3C2/CuWO4/Pt nanozyme exhibited significant antimicrobial performance against both Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). In summary, this work presents a Ti3C2/CuWO4/Pt nanoplatform that utilizes the photothermal effect to enhance the chemodynamic antimicrobial activity, showcasing its potential applications in antibiotic-free antimicrobial fields.

High-Resolution Imaging of Biological Soft and Hard Tissues Using NIR Scintillators

Xinran Wang,Heng Dai,Yichun Liu,Linglu Kuang,Hao Song,Zhaowei Teng,Dawei Wang,Ting Wang,Xuhui Xu

Near-infrared (NIR) luminescence has emerged as a powerful tool in biological imaging due to its nondestructive nature, high spatiotemporal resolution, and deep tissue penetration. However, traditional NIR imaging often fails to provide detailed information about hard tissues such as bones. In this study, an approach for simultaneous imaging of soft and hard tissues using Lu 1.5 Mg 1.5 Al 3.5 Si 1.5 O 12 : Yb 3+ as an NIR scintillator is presented. Under X-ray irradiation, Lu 1.5 Mg 1.5 Al 3.5 Si 1.5 O 12 : Yb 3+ scintillator emits NIR emission with a peak at 970 nm with thermal quenching resistance, which is strongly absorbed by soft tissues, enabling soft tissue imaging. Additionally, the scintillator provides a high signal-to-noise ratio for X-ray imaging, allowing for high-resolution imaging of hard tissues, unaffected by ambient light, with a spatial resolution of up to 203 µm. By leveraging X-ray as the sole excitation source, this method provides a comprehensive view of internal biological structures, including vascular and skeletal tissues, with high resolution and minimal interference. This innovation holds great promise for advancing medical imaging technologies and enhancing diagnostic capabilities.

NIR-Triggered siRNA Release and Lysosomal Escape for Synergistic Photothermal Tumor Therapy

Myagmarsuren Baldan,Shuang Zhang,Qi Sun,Yan Su,Dong Mei,Ran Sun,Ao Zheng,Danni Liu,Jie Zhang,Ran Huo,Yang Tian,Le Han,Shibo Wang,Yaoqi Wang,Chunying Cui

Background Resistance to traditional treatments has spurred research into innovative therapeutic approaches for tumors. Among these innovative treatments, photothermal therapy (PTT) has gained increasing attention for its use of photothermal agents (PTAs) to convert light into heat for localized tumor ablation. However, PTT faces limitations due to heat shock protein 70 (HSP70)-mediated resistance in tumor cells. Combining PTT via indocyanine green (ICG) with siRNA HSP70 could reduce the thermal resistance of the tumor, thereby enhancing treatment efficacy. Albumin-based nanoparticles (NPs) can effectively deliver ICG and siRNA into tumor cells. When exposed to near-infrared (NIR) light, these nanoparticles trigger lysosomal escape and release, further enhancing gene silencing activity. Methods This study aimed to develop a biocompatible delivery system, HSA@ICG/siRNA NPs, for photothermal-enhanced tumor therapy. The nanoparticles were characterized for size, charge, surface functionalization, and photoconversion properties. In vitro antitumor efficacy was evaluated using MTT assay, calcein AM/PI staining, RT-PCR, and Western blot in 4T1 tumor cells. In vivo, we assessed photothermal effects, biodistribution, tumor inhibition, and biosafety following irradiation. Results Characterization confirmed the successful synthesis of uniform, stable HSA@ICG/siRNA NPs with effective photothermal conversion properties. Cellular uptake studies revealed high siRNA internalization, with laser-induced lysosomal escape enhancing cytoplasmic delivery. In vitro, gene silencing reduced mRNA and protein levels by 82.8% and 65%, respectively. In vivo, local tumor temperature increased to 42°C within 3 minutes, indicating a mild but effective photothermal effect. Tumor inhibition rates were 50.00% ± 9.16% for HSA@ICG and 71.26% ± 7.92% for HSA@ICG/siRNA, demonstrating enhanced tumor suppression. The treatment achieved sustained tumor targeting with minimal off-target toxicity. Conclusion As a dual-function photothermal therapy agent, HSA@ICG/siRNA NPs combine targeted gene silencing with photothermal effects, demonstrating significant therapeutic promise. This integrated approach addresses tumor resistance, offering a potential advancement in cancer treatment strategies.

Programmable magnetic-induced functional gradient hydrogel for NIR-driven underwater soft robots

Mengdan Yan,Haoyang Tian,Zhong Liu,Xiangbing Wu,Li Yu,Zhiyun Ma,Yongxia Gu,Wenzhong Wang,Shaoze Yan,Xuemei Chen,Jieliang Zhao

Multilayered soft underwater robots achieve superior performance in deep-sea environments through enhanced environmental adaptability and structural dexterity. However, the insufficient interfacial bond strength of conventional multilayer structure designs is often compromised by interface layering and limited drive modes, leading to the interlayer peeling and poor reconfigurability. Here, a novel programmable functional gradient hydrogel is developed based on a magnetic field-guided gradient distribution, the structure-function integrated design of which is achieved by the gradient distribution of Fe 3 O 4 /polydopamine hybrid nanoparticles (FPHPs) with photo-thermal responsive properties into a temperature-sensitive hydrogel network. This hydrogel effectively avoids interfacial failure issues in traditional multilayer materials due to its seamless gradient structure. Upon 808 nm near-infrared (NIR) irradiation, the localized heating to 59.6 °C underwater creates a temperature gradient, which in turn induces a asymmetric swelling force for actuation. Experimental results demonstrate that the hydrogel can achieve controllable bending deformation of 180° within 5 s while maintaining initial deformation capability after more than 50 deformation cycles. We developed an underwater smart optical sensor utilizing hydrogel deformation to precisely modulate infrared tube exposure area, enabling RGB-LED multicolor tunable display for enhanced deep-sea optical communication. Furthermore, exploiting the programmable magnetization of FPHPs, we constructed various soft robots including an integrated jellyfish-inspired prototype with precisely controlled locomotion. This work advances flexible underwater robotics by solving interfacial stability problems and pioneering hydrogel-based underwater optical sensors, enabling intelligent deep-sea exploration.

Hewei Wei,Feifei Feng,Qiteng Ding,Junran Yang,Taojing Yu,Xiaoyu Wu,Xiaohang Sun,Chuanbo Ding,Yupeng Song

s Bone defects have long posed a challenge in trauma orthopedics. Despite advancements in bone tissue engineering, there remains a bottleneck in developing bone implants that are less toxic, more effective, and reduce the need for secondary surgeries. To address this, we devised a light-responsive bone-targeted smart nano-delivery system. This system integrates polydopamine (PDA)-coated TAX-loaded ZIF-8 nanoparticles into a hydrogel with strong bioadhesion and biocompatibility (TAX@ZIF-8@PDA/ODEX-HD, TZPG). When exposed to near-infrared light, TZPG + NIR demonstrated a high photothermal conversion efficiency of 51.79 %. It exhibited a 99 % inhibition rate against Staphylococcus aureus, while also enhancing the proliferation and differentiation of osteoblasts (MC3T3-E1), thereby accelerating bone defect repair in a rat cranial bone defect model. Additionally, TZPG + NIR accelerates bone tissue repair by upregulating osteogenic-related proteins (ALP, RUNX2, OSX, OCN) while enhancing the expression of COL-I and PDGFA proteins to promote angiogenesis. Overall, TZPG + NIR created an antimicrobial microenvironment in vitro , enabled intelligent controlled release, and programmed degradation during the bone repair cycle, achieving a one-time therapeutic effect. This study highlights the promising applications of near-infrared light-responsive material TZPG in regenerative medicine, offering a novel approach to developing multifunctional bone scaffolds for repairing bone defects as a viable alternative to autografts.

Kechen Zhang,Haojing Xu,Yuhe Shao,Zaisheng Wen,Ting Wang,Mingyue Chen,Zhen Song,Quanlin Liu

Achieving excitation-free, long-range target surveillance under complete darkness remains a critical challenge for night-vision technology. Here, a breakthrough is reported in near-infrared (NIR) persistent luminescence (PersL) materials designed specifically for this frontier. Through strategic bandgap engineering via Sm 3 ⁺ co-doping and In 3 ⁺ solid-solution incorporation in the novel Cr 3 ⁺-doped Mg 3 Ga 1.9 In 0.1 SnO 8 spinel phosphor, the afterglow intensity and duration are dramatically enhanced. The optimized material exhibits an ultra-long NIR PersL exceeding 168 h. Crucially, PDMS films embedded with this phosphor enabled real-time, persistent target detection at an unprecedented distance of 47.5 m in complete darkness, entirely without any external excitation source. This record-setting long-range performance demonstrates the material's potential as an enabling technology for passive, long-range nighttime surveillance systems. Comprehensive spectroscopic studies elucidate the underlying PersL mechanism. This work establishes a new pathway for designing ultra-long NIR PersL materials and paves the way for advanced applications in remote night-vision technologies.

Curcumin-enhanced NIR-II-responsive gold nanobipyramids for targeted HSP 90 inhibition

Zhenying Diao,Youcheng Liang,Yong Liu,Dou Zhang,Long Qiu,Jianbo Sun,Qiaoyou Lu,Yanlei Liu,Daxiang Cui,Ting Yin

Blockade of heat shock protein 90 (HSP90) expression in multimodal synergistic therapy has a great prospect for cancer treatment. Nanomaterials combined with bioinformatic analysis provides accurate guidance for the design of anti-HSP90 nanomedicines. Herein, a NIR-II-responsive nanoplatform was developed under bioinformatics guided to effectly inhibit HSP90 for enhanced synergistic mild-photothermal chemotherapy without any notable tissue damage. The nanoplatforms were assembled from NIR-II-responsive gold nanobipyramids (GNBs) combined with curcumin (Cur) via hydrophobic-hydrophobic interactions and hydrogen bonds. On the basis of drug discovery and network pharmacology, we found that Cur has impressive anti-HSP90 capability and analyzed its therapeutic mechanism against NSCLC. Under the irradiation of NIR-II light, the obtained GNBs-Cur blocked the expression of HPS90 and inhibited related antiapoptotic pathways, thus enhancing the mild PTT of GNBs under 1064 nm laser irradiation. Meanwhile, Cur served as chemotherapeutic agents to induce apoptosis in tumor cells. In vivo photoacoustic imaging-guided, GNBs-Cur achieved effective tumor elimination through mild-photothermal chemotherapy without systemic toxicity. Overall, this work provides a new therapeutic modality paradigm for potential NSCLC treatment on the basis of synergistic therapies.

Lanjiao Li,Ying Chen,Rongfei Wei,Siyu Guo,Xiangling Tian,Fangfang Hu,Hai Guo

Near-infrared phosphor-converted light-emitting diodes (NIR pc-LEDs) are playing an increasingly important role in the spectroscopy technology fields. Developing high-performance NIR-emitting phosphors is of immense significance for advancing NIR pc-LEDs. Herein, the approach of cationic substitution of Ca 2+ by Mg 2+ was designed in Ca 4 ZrGe 3 O 12 :Cr 3+ . Remarkably enhanced NIR emission and strikingly improved thermal stability are realized. The luminescence intensity at 423 K compared with that of room temperature ascends from 45.67 % to 72.81 %. Moreover, the representative sample was assembled to a NIR pc-LED with favorable output power and photoelectric conversion efficiency by combining a commercial 470 nm blue chip. The packaged LED demonstrates the feasibility of practical applications in night vision, biological imaging, and fruit detection. The above findings verify the potential prospect of Ca 4- x Mg x ZrGe 3 O 12 :Cr 3+ phosphor for the utilizations in NIR light sources.
