Construction of RhB derived multicolor carbon quantum dots @ up-conversion nanoparticle NaYF4:Yb3+, Er3+ for dual-model anti-counterfeit applications

Xiyao Tian,Yuning Ma,Junchao Zhang,Hongxia Wang,Yiwang Tang,Jia Lu,Liangyun Yu,Xintong Liu,Xiulan Xin

The development of luminescent materials exhibiting dual luminescent modes for anti-counterfeiting purposes is of significant importance. In this study, we introduce and synthesize hybrid materials composed of carbon quantum dots and up-conversion particles (CDs@UCNP). By combining Yb 3+ and Er 3+ doped NaYF 4 up-conversion nanoparticles with carbon quantum dots, we successfully prepared a kind of fluorescent materials that demonstrate dual-mode fluorescence. By changing the fluorescent color of carbon quantum dots to achieve different down-conversion (DC) luminescence, we produced three dual-mode luminescent materials: BCDs@UCNP, YCDs@UCNP, and RCDs@UCNP, which exhibit blue, yellow, and red DC luminescence when exposed to 365 nm ultraviolet light, alongside green or red up-conversion luminescence under 980 nm laser. Furthermore, we formulated three water-based inks utilizing water-based acrylic emulsion as a binder. These inks exhibit dual-mode tunable luminescence properties, thereby enhancing the security of the printed patterns and positioning them as promising candidates for anti-counterfeiting applications.

Controlled synthesis and panchromatic printing of highly luminescent NaYF4:Ln3+ upconversion hollow microtubes for information encryption on various packaging substrates

Jianxiong Xu,Guo Du,Chao Tong,Showen Xie,Haihu Tan,Lijian Xu,Na Li

Lanthanide-ion doped β -NaYF 4 crystals with bright and tunable upconversion luminescence are urgently demanded in anti-counterfeiting printing. Herein, novel highly luminescent hexagonal NaYF 4 :Ln 3+ upconversion hollow microtubes (UCHMs) were controlled synthesized by a one-pot hydrothermal method employing poly(ethylene imine) (PEI) as ligand. The surface of the synthesized UCHMs was decorated by water-soluble polymer of PEI , rendering the hydrophilic nature of UCHMs. Besides, the synthesized UCHMs exhibited bright upconversion luminescence under the irradiation of a 980 nm laser due to the unique structure and morphology. Time-dependent morphology evolution showed that the formation of UCHMs experience a morphology change from nanoparticles to hexahedron to microprisms, and ultimately to microtubes via a dissolution-reconstruction formation mechanism. Furthermore, the resulting UCHMs were used as pigments for preparation of luminescent inks and their application in anti-counterfeiting printing was explored. To realize panchromatic printing, we prepared three-primary-color (RGB) UCHMs by rational tailoring the doping pairs and molar ratio of the lanthanide ions in UCHMs. Based on the superposition principle of the red-green-blue as three primary colors, a wide array of luminescent inks with panchromatic luminescent colors were prepared. The successful creation of securely light-responsive smart encryption patterns on various packaging substrates such as art paper, aluminum sheet, polyethylene terephthalate (PET) film and cardboard by screen printing was demonstrated. Our strategy provides a new route for controlled synthesis of hydrophilic UCHMs and the as-prepared UCHMs have great potential in application of packaging anti-counterfeiting.

Multimodal Imaging and Synergetic Chemodynamic/Photodynamic Therapy Achieved Using an NaGdF4,Yb,Er@ NaGdF4,Yb,Tm@NaYF4@Fe-MOFs Nanocomposite

Bo Ling,Yaguang Wang,Ruo Mi,Di Wang,Hongqi Chen,Xiaohu Li,Ye Zhang,Lun Wang

Graphical NaGdF 4 ,Yb,Er@NaGdF 4 ,Yb,Tm@NaYF 4 core@shell@shell three-layer structure of upconversion nanoparticles coated with Fe−TCPP metal-organic frameworks nanocomposite was designed and constructed for multimodal imaging and synergetic chemodynamic therapy/photodynamic therapy of tumors. Here, NaGdF 4 ,Yb,Er@NaGdF 4 ,Yb,Tm@NaYF 4 core@shell@shell three-layer structure of upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) coated with Fe−Tetrakis (4-carboxyphenyl) porphine (TCPP) metal-organic frameworks (Fe-MOFs) nanocomposite (UCNPs@MOFs) was designed and constructed for multimodal imaging and synergetic chemodynamic therapy (CDT)/photodynamic therapy (PDT) of tumors. The UCNPs@MOFs were successfully applied for tumor cells imaging in vitro and in vivo in near-infrared (NIR) region. The doped Gd was used as contrast agent for the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of mouse tumors. The luminescence in the UV-vis region was absorbed by the Fe-MOFs to produce singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) for PDT. The Fe 3+ doped in the MOFs can catalyze H 2 O 2 to produce oxygen and hydroxyl radical (⋅OH). Hydroxyl radical is used in CDT and cooperates with the 1 O 2 of PDT. Based on the CDT/PDT synergistic effects, the UCNPs@MOFs nanocomposite had obviously enhanced tumor inhibitory efficiency in vivo. These results described that the asprared UCNPs@MOFs nanocomposite have great potential in the effective multimodal imaging and treatment of tumors.

Acetic acid-mediated rapid cubic-to-hexagonal (α–β) phase transformation for ultra-bright lanthanide-doped β-NaYF4 nano-bioprobes

Jiang Shihui,Ke Jianxi,Li Guowei,Liu Aijun,Li Xiaohan,Ye Lixiang,Jiang Feilong,Liu Yongsheng,Hong Maochun

Hexagonal-phase NaYF 4 (β-NaYF 4 ) has been acknowledged to be one of the most efficient doping hosts to prepare bright lanthanide-doped luminescent nano-bioprobes for various biomedical applications. However, to date, it remains a great challenge to synthesize ultra-bright lanthanide-doped β-NaYF 4 nano-bioprobes under a low reaction temperature by using conventional synthetic methods. Herein, we first develop an acetic acid (HAc)-mediated coprecipitation method for the preparation of ultra-bright lanthanide-doped β-NaYF 4 nanoprobes under a low reaction temperature at 200 °C. Based on a series of comparative spectroscopic investigations, we show that the use of HAc in the reaction environment can not only promote the rapid α–β phase transformation of NaYF 4 host at 200 °C within 1 h but also boost the absolute photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of NaYF 4 nanocrystals to 30.68% for near-infrared emission and to 3.79% for upconversion luminescence, both of which are amongst the highest values for diverse lanthanide-doped luminescent nanocrystals ever reported. By virtue of their superior near-infrared luminescence, we achieve optical-guided dynamic vasculature imaging in vivo of the whole body at a high spatial resolution (23.8 µm) under 980 nm excitation, indicating its potential for the diagnosis and treatment evaluation of vasculature-related diseases.

Absolute up-conversion quantum efficiency reaching 4% in β-NaYF4:Yb3+,Er3+ micro-cylinders achieved by Li+/Na+ ion-exchange

Shaohua Fan,Guojun Gao,Shiyu Sun,Sijun Fan,Hongtao Sun,Lili Hu

Absolute quantum efficiency (QE) of up-conversion (UC) materials is still limited to ∼3%, which strongly limits their applications in many areas. Herein, we report highly efficient UC β-NaYF4:Yb3+,Er3+ micro-cylinders prepared via a newly developed Li+/Na+ ion exchange method (IEM) with absolute QE as high as ∼4.0%. A small amount of Li+ is interstitially incorporated in β-NaYF4:Yb3+,Er3+, which not only maintains well the micro-cylindrical morphology but also enhances the emission intensity by ∼40%, doubles absolute UCQE (∼3.0% under a fixed excitation power density of 15 W cm−2), and prolongs the lifetime. The UC excitation profile is composed of a sharp peak at 976 nm and a weak shoulder at 935 nm. The absolute UCQE of Li+/Na+ IEM β-NaYF4:Yb3+,Er3+ is systemically studied over a wide excitation power density of 0.4–100 W cm−2, and we obtained impressively high UCQE of 4.0% under 60 W cm−2 power density, which is among the highest values in the literature. The application of two green UC emissions of Li+/Na+ IEM β-NaYF4:Yb3+,Er3+ in ratiometric thermometers is successfully demonstrated. The high relative temperature sensitivity (SR) of 1113/T2 and excellent repeatability as indicated by three heating–cooling cycles (293–753 K) suggest their promising application as a temperature sensor.

Incorporation of Computed Tomography and Magnetic Resonance Imaging Function into NaYF4:Yb/Tm Upconversion Nanoparticles for in Vivo Trimodal Bioimaging

Ji-Wei Shen,Cheng-Xiong Yang,Lu-Xi Dong,Hao-Ran Sun,Kai Gao,Xiu-Ping Yan

Rational design and fabrication of multimodal imaging nanoprobes are of great significance for in vivo imaging. Here we report the fabrication of a multishell structured NaYF4:Yb/Tm@NaLuF4@NaYF4@NaGdF4 nanoprobe via a seed-mediated epitaxial growth strategy for upconversion luminescence (UCL), X-ray computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance (MR) trimodal imaging. Hexagonal phase NaYF4:Yb/Tm is used as the core to provide UCL, while the shell of NaLuF4 is epitaxially grown on the core not only to provide an optically inert layer for enhancing the UCL but also to serve as a contrast agent for CT. The outermost NaGdF4 shell is fabricated as a thin layer to give the high longitudinal relaxivity (r1) desired for MR imaging. The transition shell layer of NaYF4 not only provides an interface to facilitate the formation of NaGdF4 shell but also inhibits the energy transfer from inner upconversion activator to surface paramagnetic Gd3+ ions. The fabricated multishell structured nanoprobe shows intense near-infrared UCL, high r1 value of 3.76 mM–1 s–1, and in vitro CT contrast effect. The multishell structured nanoprobe offers great potential for in vivo UCL/CT/MR trimodal imaging. Further covalent bonding of folic acid makes the multishell structured nanoprobe promising for in vivo targeted UCL imaging of tumor-bearing mice.

An optical FRET inhibition sensor for serum ferritin based on Mn2+-doped NaYF4:Yb,Tm NIR luminescence up-conversion nanoparticles

ShaoZhen Wang,Jianguo Zhang,Hongqi Chen,Lun Wang

A new serum ferritin (SF) biosensor based on fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) from Mn 2+ -doped NaYF 4 :Yb,Tm up-converting rare-earth nanophosphors (UCNPs, donor) to gold nanorods (GNRs, acceptor) was developed in the near-infrared (NIR) region. The as-prepared Mn 2+ -doped NaYF 4 :Yb,Tm UCNPs exhibited a strong emission at 807   nm in the NIR region and were modified with poly-(acrylic acid) (PAA) before conjugating with anti-SF (Ab 1 ). The negatively charged donor (Ab 1 -UCNPs) and the positively charged acceptor (GNRs) were mixed in close proximity due to electrostatic interactions, which quenched the fluorescence emission of the Mn 2+ -doped NaYF 4 :Yb,Tm UCNPs. However, added SF combines with the anti-SF because the binding affinity between SF and Ab 1 is stronger than the electrostatic interactions. Thus, the acceptor separated from the donor, and the fluorescence was restored. Under optimal conditions, the restored fluorescence exhibited a linear relationship with SF concentrations ranging from 0.23 to 16.88   ng/mL and a limit of detection as low as 0.12   ng/mL. The proposed method was also used to monitor SF in human serum samples.

Sub-5-nm lanthanide-doped ZrO2@NaYF4 nanodots as efficient upconverting probes for rapid scanning microscopy and aptamer-mediated bioimaging

Jing Liu,Nana Li,Ruitao Wu,Yuxiang Zhao,Qiuqiang Zhan,Sailing He

Upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) is a class of promising probes widely used in protein molecules imaging due to the no photobleaching and non-blinking emission. However, it is still remained challenging to synthesize a type of ultra-small but bright UCNPs. In this paper, a new class of efficient sub-5-nm upconversion nanodots (UCNDs) was elaborately designed and experimentally demonstrated. The proposed uniform UCNDs comprise two parts: a 3.5-nm Ln3+-doped ZrO2 core and 0.5-nm NaYF4 shell. The emission intensity of the proposed UCNDs was measured to be more than 10 times brighter than that of the conventional 10-nm NaYF4 UCNPs. Under 300 kW·cm−2 irradiance excitation, the 15 mol% Er3+-doped UCNDs exhibit an 18-fold enhanced intensity and one fifth emission lifetime compared to the 0.5 mol% Er3+-doped ones. Using the biocompatible UCNDs, the aptamer-mediated proteins-targeted imaging was performed and demonstrated high efficiency. These ultra-small, efficient UCNDs would have great potentials in rapid scanning and cellular imaging.© 2015 Optical Society of America

Preparation of gold nanoparticle coated NaYF4:Yb,Er,Gd nanoparticles and their application for AFP detection in the red region

Yuanhui Ma,Liping Zhang,Lei Wang,Lun Wang,Hongqi Chen

A novel surface plasmon resonance (SPR) enhanced upconversion (UC) luminescence system was designed for the detection of α-fetoprotein (AFP) by using gold nanoparticle (NP) coated NaYF4:Yb,Er,Gd upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) as probes. The gold NP coated NaYF4:Yb,Er,Gd UCNPs had a strong emission at 665 nm and were modified with poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) before being conjugated with anti-AFP (Ab1). When the AFP antigens were added to the system, the binding affinity between AFP and Ab1 resulted in a reduced distance between the gold NP coated UCNPs. The UC luminescence intensity of this system was enhanced because of the SPR properties of the gold NPs. The sensing system exhibited a high sensitivity, good specificity, and wide linear range, 0.098–15.0 ng mL−1 for the detection of AFP (R = 0.99), with a detection limit as low as 0.095 ng mL−1 under optimal conditions. The method was successfully applied to AFP sensing in human serum samples.

Optical–magnetic bifunctional properties and mechanistic insights on upconversion of NaYF4:Yb,Ho,Tm@NaGdF4 with a tunable nanodumbbell morphology

Zhichao Yu,Haifeng Zhou,Guangjun Zhou,Juan Zhou,Yaqiang Wu,Xingshuang Zhang,Tao Wang,Dapeng Huang,Xinqiang Wang,Jifan Hu

The energy-upconversion of lanthanide-doped nanoparticles with a core–shell structure can be utilized to enhance and tune optical properties and can generate multifunctionality in a single system. Herein, the core–shell nanoparticles NaYF4:Yb,Ho,Tm@NaGdF4 were prepared by thermally decomposing lanthanide acetylacetonate precursors. Through modifying the molar ratio of the core and shell, nanodumbbell-shaped particles with different sizes and morphologies were precisely synthesized. The formation mechanism and the heterogeneous epitaxial growth process of the nanodumbbell-shaped particles were studied. After coating the shell layer, upconversion luminescence intensities, spectral purity and fluorescence lifetimes were improved. Furthermore, the magnetic performance of the core–shell nanoparticles was characterized. The optical–magnetic bifunctional upconversion core–shell particles with programmable shape and multiple properties provide an ideal platform for the preparation of nanodumbbell-shaped particles and the promotion of upconversion materials for biomedical research.

Fabrication and evaluation of chitosan/NaYF4:Yb3 +/Tm3 + upconversion nanoparticles composite beads based on the gelling of Pickering emulsion droplets

Huiqiong Yan,Xiuqiong Chen,Jia Shi,Zaifeng Shi,Wei Sun,Qiang Lin,Xianghui Wang,Zihao Dai

The rare earth ion doped upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) synthesized by hydrophobic organic ligands possess poor solubility and low fluorescence quantum yield in aqueous media. To conquer this issue, NaYF 4 :Yb 3   + /Tm 3   + UCNPs, synthesized by a hydrothermal method, were coated with F127 and then assembled with chitosan to fabricate the chitosan/NaYF 4 :Yb 3   + /Tm 3   + composite beads (CS/NaYF 4 :Yb 3   + /Tm 3   + CBs) by Pickering emulsion system. The characterization results revealed that the as-synthesized NaYF 4 :Yb 3   + /Tm 3   + UCNPs with an average size of 20   nm exhibited spherical morphology, high crystallinity and characteristic emission upconversion fluorescence with an overall blue color output. The NaYF 4 :Yb 3   + /Tm 3   + UCNPs were successfully conjugated on the surface of chitosan beads by the gelling of emulsion droplets. The resultant CS/NaYF 4 :Yb 3   + /Tm 3   + CBs showed good upconversion luminescent property, drug-loading capacity, release performance and excellent biocompatibility, exhibiting great potentials in targeted drug delivery and tissue engineering with potential tracking capability and lasting release performance.

Near-infrared responsive magnetic photocatalyst based on NaYF4:Yb3+/Er3+@Cu2O@MoS2@Fe3O4 for the efficient degradation of organic contaminants

Yuangong Ma,Wensheng Zhang,Zhifang Wu,Zhishan Liang,Youlin Huang,Qingmei Tan,Tianren Liu,Dongxue Han,Li Niu

In the realm of photocatalysis, effectively utilizing solar energy, especially the near-infrared (NIR) spectrum, presents substantial challenges. To tackle this issue, a novel composite of NaYF4:Yb3+/Er3+@Cu2O@MoS2@Fe3O4 (denoted as NYE@Cu2O@MoS2@Fe3O4) was ingeniously fabricated and assessed for the photodegradation of organic contaminants. By harnessing the distinct properties of upconversion materials, narrow bandgap semiconductors, and magnetic substances, the NYE@Cu2O@MoS2@Fe3O4 catalyst possesses a photodegradation rate of 92% for the rhodamine B dye under NIR light radiation, which is superior to NYE@Cu2O (50%) and NYE@Cu2O@MoS2 (85%). The enhanced performance in the near-infrared photocatalysis of NYE@Cu2O@MoS2@Fe3O4 is mainly attributed to the synergistic effect of various components, which promotes an increase in photo-induced carrier generation and facilitates their efficient transfer and energy utilization under NIR irradiation. This study provides a possible route for the near-infrared photocatalytic degradation of pollutants in areas with limited light or even dark conditions.
