It is a challenge to explore inexpensive noble-metal-free catalysts with long-term stability at low overpotential for water electrolysis to produce hydrogen. Herein, we constructed hierarchical Ni 3 S 2 -NiOOH hetero-nanocomposite on nickel foam (NF@Ni 3 S 2 -NiOOH) through a two-step hydrothermal and electrodeposition method. The as-prepared NF@Ni 3 S 2 -NiOOH catalyst was capable of catalyzing hydrogen evolution reaction effectively with a low overpotential of 160 mV at a current density of 10 mA/cm 2 in 1.0 M NaOH, and maintained excellent performance for 45 h without obvious attenuation.

Supercapacitors attract tremendous research attention due to the cost-effectiveness, high power capacity and environment-friendly in the field of energy storage. In this work, Ni 3 S 2 thin-layer nanosheets coupled with Co 9 S 8 nanoparticles anchored on 3D cross-linking composite structure 5 mLCNT@MXene matrix (Ni/Co@C 5 M) was successfully synthesized via two-step hydrothermal and subsequent annealing treatment, possessing excellent electrochemical performance in terms of high rate capability, superior reversible capacity and outstanding durability. The electrode materials have distinct 3D cross-linking composite structure characteristics, which can significantly boost capacitive storage performance due to the introduction of CNT cross-linking conductive bridges and sulfides. Meanwhile, CNT can also prevent re-stacking of MXene layers and improve the electrical conductivity. As expected, the specific capacitance of Ni/Co@C 5 M electrode is 1827.5 F g −1 at 1 A g −1 , which retains 88.57% after 10,000 cycles at a high current density of 30 A g −1 in cycling stability. Notably, an asymmetric supercapacitor (Ni/Co@C 5 M as the negative electrode and AC as the positive electrode, Ni/Co@C 5 M // AC) has exceptionally high energy density up to 78.4 Wh kg −1 at a power density of 699.3 W kg −1 and long capacitance retention of 86.67% at 20 A g −1 for 10,000 cycles. The designed Ni/Co@C 5 M // AC asymmetric supercapacitor in this work holds a promising future for the upgrading new high-performance energy storage device.

ABSTRACT Developing highly efficient, easy-to-make and cost-effective bifunctional electrocatalysts for water splitting with lower cell voltages is crucial to producing massive hydrogen fuel. In response, the coupled hierarchical Ni/Fe-based MOF nanosheet arrays with embedded metal sulfide nanoclusters onto nickel foam skeleton (denoted as Fe-Ni 3 S 2 @NiFe-MOF/NF) are fabricated, in which the Fe-Ni 3 S 2 clusters could effectively restrain the aggregation of the layer metal-organic frameworks (MOF) nanosheets and adjust the local electronic structures of MOFs nanosheets. Benefiting from the rapid charge transfer and the exposure of abundant active sites, the well-designed Fe-Ni 3 S 2 @NiFe-MOF/NF displays excellent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance. More importantly, when equipped in the alkaline water electrolyzer, the Fe-Ni 3 S 2 @NiFe-MOF/NF enables the system with a mere 1.6 V for achieving the current density of 10 mA cm −2 . This work offers a paradigm for designing efficient bifunctional HER/OER electrocatalysts based on the hybrid materials of nanostructured metal sulfide and MOF.

Porous network-like Ni3S2 nanoarchitectures have been successfully synthesized on nickel foam via a facile eco-friendly biomolecule-assisted hydrothermal process, in which L-cysteine serves as both a sulfur source and a directing molecule in the formation of Ni3S2 nanoarchitectures. The possible formation mechanism of network-like Ni3S2 nanostructures has been proposed on the basis of the experimental results. The unique three-dimensional network-like Ni3S2@NF nanoarchitectures can produce a synergistic effect for facilitating electron transport and ionic diffusion within the electrode, accommodating the volume expansion during cycling and leading to excellent electrochemical performance. The resulting binder-free Ni3S2@NF electrode delivers a high reversible specific capacity of 847.82 mA h g−1 at a current density of 200 mA g−1, which remains at 569.86 mA h g−1 even after 300 cycles (a 67.21% retention of the second cycle), and excellent rate performance. This facile, environmentally benign and solution-phase biomolecule-assisted method can be potentially extended to the preparation of other novel porous chalcogenides with potential applications in the fields of hydrogen storage, high-energy batteries, supercapacitors, and catalysis.

Developing cost-effectiveness and superior electrocatalysts is crucial to improve the efficiency of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in water splitting system. Hence, flower-like phosphorus doped Ni 3 S 2 /CoFe 2 O 4 arrays (P-Ni 3 S 2 /CoFe 2 O 4 /NF) were generated on three-dimensional (3D) nickel foam (NF) via the two-step hydrothermal treatment and subsequent phosphorization. Additionally, a series of control experiments were conducted to investigate the formation mechanism. By virtue of the unique 3D configurations and multi-compositions, the as-prepared catalyst exhibited greatly improved OER performance in 1.0 M KOH solution, with the overpotential of only 254 mV at 50 mA cm −2 and low Tafel slope of 54.43 mV dec −1 . This study provides a feasible approach for preparing advanced electrocatalyst in energy conversion and storage devices.

Graphical Please stand up : Self-standing Ni 3 S 2 /Ni 2 P heteronanorod arrays were successfully grown on nickel foam (Ni-S−P NRs/NF) via a facile simultaneous phosphorization and sulfurization thermal treatment of NF at a low temperature. The Ni-S−P NRs/NF exhibited excellent and stable hydrogen evolution reaction catalytic activity in a wide pH range, which can be attributed to the rational configuration and the coupling interactions between Ni 3 S 2 and Ni 2 P. The development of efficient, stable and low-cost electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) through a facile strategy is undoubtedly vital to realize sustainable production of H 2 in water splitting but still challenging. Herein, we present a one-step approach, a simultaneous phosphorization and sulfurization thermal treatment of NF at low temperature, to direct grow Ni-S−P heteronanorod arrays consisting of Ni 3 S 2 and Ni 2 P on nickel foam (Ni-S−P NRs/NF). Due to the direct growth, one-dimensional structure and good conductivity of the catalyst hybrid, as well as the synergistic effect between Ni 3 S 2 and Ni 2 P, the resultant Ni-S−P NRs/NF exhibited excellent HER electrocatalytic activity over a wide pH range. Ni-S−P NRs/NF shows an overpotential of 180, 148 and 292 mV to reach the current density of 100 mA cm −2 in 1.0 M KOH, 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 and 1.0 M PBS solution, respectively. DFT theoretical calculations was further confirmed that the superior pH-universal HER activity of Ni-S−P NRs/NF is originated from the thermo-neutral hydrogen adsorption free energy and the enhanced adsorption of water molecular by the Ni 3 S 2 /Ni 2 P heterostructure.

Engineering the surface structure and constructing a suitable internal conductive network is essential for the electron transfer rate and the active material utilization efficiency of an electrode. Here, high-porosity carbon nanotube (CNT) arrays grown on graphite foam (GNF) are synthesized via the self-sacrificial ZnO nanorod template. Then three-dimensional Co-doped Ni3S2 nanostructures (Co–Ni3S2) are coated on the CNT surface via a simple hydrothermal process. The CNTs/GNF hybrid with a hierarchical conductive network exhibits good electrical conductivity, while the tectorum-like Co–Ni3S2 nanosheet structure may facilitate both the ion and electron transfer in the redox process. Therefore, the Co–Ni3S2@CNTs/GNF composite shows a highest specific capacitance of 4.1 F cm−2, good rate performance (57.8% capacitance retention from 1 to 40 mA cm−2) and cycling stability (89.8% capacitance retention after 1000 cycles). Moreover, the Co–Ni3S2@CNT/GNF electrode also reveals good hydrogen evolution reaction activity in alkaline solution (an overpotential of 155 mV at 10 mA cm−2).

Developing sulfur-containing one-dimensional (1D) nanocatalysts with high active surface area and stability remains a significant challenge for achieving high-performance oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts. In this study, a novel 1D FeS-Ni 3 S 2 nanorod array covered with interwoven nanosheets was synthesized on nickel foam (NF) using a solvothermal process. A rigid segment-containing polysulfide (Poly(S- r -DIB)) was employed as a sulfur source and in situ intercalator, enabling efficient sulfidation and structural formation. The resulting FeS-Ni 3 S 2 /NF nanocatalyst demonstrated outstanding OER performance, achieving a low overpotential of 215 mV at 50 mA cm - ² and a low Tafel slope of 51 mV dec - ¹ . The catalyst exhibited remarkable stability, retaining over 85 % of its original activity after prolonged testing. Furthermore, in a two-electrode configuration, the catalyst reached a current density of 20 mA cm - ² at a low applied voltage of 1.41 V. This work introduces a new approach for fabricating sulfur-containing 1D nanomaterials with superior catalytic activity, paving the way for advancements in water splitting and sustainable hydrogen energy production.

Heazlewoodite nickel sulfide (Ni 3 S 2 ) is advocated as a promising nonnoble catalyst for electrochemical water splitting because of its unique structure configuration and high conductivity. However, the low active sites and strong sulfur–hydrogen bonds (S–H ads ) formed on Ni 3 S 2 surface greatly inhibit the desorption of H ads and reduce the hydrogen and oxygen evolution reaction (HER and OER) activity. Doping is a valid strategy to stimulate the intrinsic catalytic activity of pristine Ni 3 S 2 via modifying the active site. Herein, the Ni foam supported Fe and Mo co-doped Ni 3 S 2 electrocatalysts (Fe-MoS 2 /Ni 3 S 2 @NF) have been constructed using Keplerate polyoxomolybdate {Mo 72 F 30 } as precursor through a facile hydrothermal process. Experimental results certificate that Fe and Mo co-doping can effectively tune the local electronic structure, facilitate the interfacial electron transfer, and improve the intrinsic activity. Consequently, the Fe-MoS 2 /Ni 3 S 2 @NF display more excellent HER and OER activity than MoS 2 /Ni 3 S 2 @NF and bare Ni 3 S 2 @NF by delivering the 10 and 50 mA cm −2 current densities at ultra-low overpotentials of 74/175 and 80/160 mV for HER and OER. Moreover, when coupled in an alkaline electrolyzer, Fe-MoS 2 /Ni 3 S 2 @NF approached the current of 10 mA cm −2 under a cell voltage of 1.60 V and exhibit excellent stability. The strategy to realize tunable catalytic behaviors via foreign metal doping provides a new avenue to optimize the water splitting catalysts.

Development of efficient, low-cost, and bifunctional catalysts based on ultrathin heterostructures for both the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is critical for advancing overall water splitting. In this study, we design a simple intercalation-sulfidation strategy by rigid segment-containing Polysulfide as a sulfur source and in-situ intercalation for the construction of the metastable 1 T'-2H'-phase Mo-Ni 3 S 2 heterostructures (1 T'-2H'-Mo-Ni 3 S 2 ). It is found that the Polysulfides with rigid segments can be controlled by various monomers reacted with reverse sulfurization reactions between various monomers and elemental sulfur, such as Poly (sulfur-random-1,3-Benzenedithiol), Poly (sulfur-random-1,4-Benzenedithiol), and Poly (sulfur-random-4,4′-Biphenyldithiol), which can be used to assist in the synthesis process of metastable. Attributing to favorable synergy interaction in composition and structure, the resultant 1 T'-2H' phase Mo-Ni 3 S 2 heterostructures shows the superior performances toward OER and water splitting in alkaline medium. The resultant Mo-Ni 3 S 2 -BDP needs only an overpotential of 103 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 and for OER. For HER, it demonstrates a low overpotential of 136 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , and a relatively low cell voltage of 1.672 V for water splitting. The present provides a new strategy to design and develop the phase engineering of other materials with various Polymorphs.

Graphical A hierarchical heterostructure consisting of amorphous FeNi(OH) X nanosheets electrodeposited on crystalline Ni 3 S 2 scaffolds with abundant catalytic active sites and superior electronic conductivity is reported to enhance its catalytic activity and long-term stability for overall water splitting. The advancement of inexpensive and productive bifunctional electrocatalysts for overall water splitting is essential for achieving hydrogen energy production. Herein, a hierarchical heterostructure catalyst composed of amorphous FeNi(OH) X nanosheets supported on a crystalline Ni 3 S 2 scaffold, which is anchored to nickel foam through a combined hydrothermal-electrodeposition strategy, is reported. The crystalline Ni 3 S 2 framework exhibits metal-like electrical conductivity and optimized hydrogen adsorption kinetics, while the amorphous FeNi(OH) X overlayer offers abundant adaptive active sites that enhance oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity. The interfacial charge redistribution decreases the activation energy required for water splitting and accelerates the proton-coupled electron transfer process. Electrochemical tests demonstrate that the catalyst achieves performance at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , with hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and OER overpotentials as low as 78 and 183 mV, respectively. In addition, an alkaline electrolyzer assembled with this catalyst serving as both cathode and anode can sustain a current density of 10 mA cm −2 with only 1.51 V and keep a long-term stability exceeding 100 h, surpassing the performance of commercial Pt/C||IrO 2 systems. This study provides a design paradigm that integrates conductive crystalline frameworks with amorphous layers, addressing the tradeoff between conductivity and catalytic multifunctionality in nonprecious metal electrocatalysts.

Herein, we fabricate N-doped porous Ni3S2–Co9S8/carbon aerogels (Ni3S2–Co9S8/NCAs) using carrageenan/NiCo-metal–organic framework (MOF) hydrogels as the precursor via the high-temperature carbonization route with excellent electrocatalytic properties for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The electrochemical measurements indicate that the Ni3S2–Co9S8/NCA as a quintessential electrocatalyst exhibits excellent OER performance, which has outperformed most transition metal sulfide (TMS) catalysts in alkaline environments, as attested with a lower overpotential of 337 mV at 10 mA cm–2 and a smaller Tafel slope of 77 mV dec–1. Meanwhile, a Zn–air battery based on Ni3S2–Co9S8/NCA + Pt/C achieves a large power density of up to 256 mW cm–2 (and 193 mW cm–2), small charge/discharge voltage gap, and good cycling stability, notably better than the conventional RuO2 + Pt/C-based Zn–air batteries. These excellent electrocatalytic properties are mainly attributed to the distinct hierarchical porous structure and interfacial synergy between the Ni3S2 and Co9S8 nanoparticle structure with rich defects, facilitating the mass transport and high graphitization degree beneficial for electron mobility. It is envisioned that the research provides a novel approach for the exploration of marine biomass as an electrocatalyst.
