Improved transparency and charge matching of electrochromic devices with Ce-doped NiO counter electrode

Chunjian Wang,Zhenhu Cao,Shuling Xiang,Li Liao,Wentao Chen,Hongliang Zhang

The quest for cost-effective and efficient electrochromic electrodes, featuring high color contrast and rapid response times, has sparked increasing interest in research of metal oxides for electrochromic applications. In this study, nickel oxide thin films with various cerium dopant concentrations are synthesized, with the optimized doping concentration identified as 1 at%. X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed that the dopant successfully reduces crystal size and alters the preferred orientation to (111). The 1 % Ce:NiO thin film exhibits enhanced electrochromic performance, with a transmittance modulation increase of 27.4 % at 633 nm, a 27.1 % rise in coloration efficiency and faster response time (t b =9.64 s and t c =6.76 s) compare to the undoped NiO. Importantly, the charge density of 1 % Ce:NiO thin film increases from 4.86 to 8.14 mC cm −2 , representing a 67.5 % improvement, which becomes a better charge matching with WO 3 in electrochromic devices. The incorporation of Ce into the NiO thin films not only leads to increased transmittance in the bleached state and optical modulation in the electrochromic devices but also contributes to a rise in the optical band gap of the NiO thin films and improved charge balance matching. These results underscore the positive impact of cerium doping on microstructure and electrochromic performance, indicating a promising future for electrochromic devices.

Incorporation of NiO on Attapulgite supported Au Catalyst for HCHO Removal at Low Temperature

Dan Chen,Ming Zhai,Jing Zhang,Liqi Miao,Kan Li,Zhong Wang,Xiaozhi Wang

Gold-based catalysts are renowned for their exceptional low-temperature oxidation activity and have found widespread application in the thermos catalytic oxidation of formaldehyde (HCHO). In this study, an in-situ hydrothermal synthesis method was employed to prepare Au 0.5 Ni x /ATP catalysts. By altering the doping amount of Ni during the synthesis process, the impact of Ni doping on the catalytic reactivity was investigated. Compared to pure gold-based catalysts, the dispersion and sintering resistance of the Au 0.5 Ni x /ATP catalysts were enhanced. The OH - ions present in the alkaline solution provided by TPAOH disrupted the morphology of ATP, leading to a flocculent appearance for the Au 0.5 /ATP catalyst. With varying doping levels of Ni, the rod-like structure of ATP gradually recovered due to the strong interaction between Ni 2+ and OH-. On the Au 0.5 Ni x /ATP catalysts, NiO, being a p-type semiconductor, was prone to electron loss, with the lost electrons being captured by Au 3+ to form Au 0 and stronger Au and Ni interactions. When Ni species were introduced onto the Au/ATP surface, the synergistic effect between Au and Ni resulted in higher catalytic activity, favoring the catalytic oxidation of HCHO. The catalytic efficiency peaked when the Ni doping level reached 20 wt%.

Wang Hanbo,Pei Dongyu,Wan Sheng,Wang Ziming,Fan Zhitian,Tian Yumei,Li Kechang,Lu Haiyan

We initially proposed a facile one-step electrodeposition method utilizing Cyclic Voltammetry (CV) for the growth of NiO nanospheres (NiO-NSs) on three-dimensional nickel foam (NF) substrates. Notably, no binders, templates, or surfactants were introduced throughout the entire experimental process, ensuring the cleanliness and environmental friendliness of the synthesis process. The reaction parameters were successfully fine-tuned to achieve efficient in-situ growth, porous structure, and uniform morphology. The resulting optimized electrodes underwent characterization using diverse microscopic techniques. Subsequently, the electrochemical performance was analyzed in both half and full cell configurations. The obtained porous electrode materials in-situ grown on NFs exhibited a distinct nanosphere morphology with an average diameter of approximately 200 nm. The NiO-NSs exhibited satisfactory electrochemical performance in three-electrode system, demonstrated an enhanced specific capacitance of 438.2C g −1 (876.4 F g −1 ) at 1 A g −1 , highlighting their exceptional electrochemical performance. Furthermore, the assembled supercapacitor with NiO-NSs and activated carbon yielded a significantly high energy density of 37.71 Wh kg −1 and a power density of 246.38 W kg −1 at 1 A g −1 . More significantly, the outstanding capacity retention was 81.27 % after 45,000 continuous GCD cycles. This study offered novel insight into a facile synthesis method, utilizing CV electrodeposition for designing high-performance metal oxide or hydroxide materials, ultimately boosting electrochemical performance.

Zhihao Li,Zhuang Ding,Zilong Yan,Konghao Han,Maofeng Zhang,Hongyang Zhou,Xu Sun,Hui Sun,Jianhua Li,Wei Zhang,Xiaohong Liu

The ubiquity of plastic products has led to an increased exposure to micro and nano plastics across diverse environments, presenting a novel class of pollutants with substantial health implications. Emerging research indicates their capacity to infiltrate human organs, posing risks of tissue damage and carcinogenesis. Given the prevalent consumption of beverages as a primary vector for these plastics' entry into the human system, there is an imperative need for the advancement of precise detection methodologies in liquids. In this study, we introduce a substrate comprising a Nickel Oxide (NiO) nanosheet array decorated with Silver Nanoparticles (AgNPs) for the Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) analysis of micro//nano plastics. This configuration, leveraging a unique nanowell architecture alongside silver plasmonic enhancement, demonstrates unparalleled sensitivity and repeatability in signal, facilitating the accurate quantification of these contaminants. Through the application of a portable Raman apparatus, this study successfully identifies prevalent micro/nano plastics including polystyrene (PS), polyethylene (PE), and polypropylene (PP), achieving detection sensitivities of 5 μg/mL, 25 μg/mL, and 25 μg/mL, respectively. Moreover, the substrate's efficacy extends to the detection of PS within commonly consumed beverages such as water, milk, and liquor with sensitivities of 25 μg/mL, 50 μg/mL, and 50 μg/mL, respectively. These findings highlight the substrate's potential as an expedient and effective sensor for the real-time monitoring of micro/nano plastic pollutants.

Catalytic Pyrolysis of Waste Textiles for Hydrogen-Rich Syngas Production over NiO/Al2O3 Catalyst

Bo Zhang,Peiyu Yao,Fei Li,Li Pan,Wuwan Xiong,Yang Zhang,Xiang Li

Hydrogen production through the catalytic pyrolysis of low-value organic solid waste offers a promising low-carbon and environmentally friendly pathway. However, the design of efficient hydrogen-producing catalysts remains a significant challenge. Herein, NiO/Al2O3as a catalyst precursor was utilized to investigate the effects of reduction temperature gradients (300–800 °C) on the distribution of three-phase products and the composition of gaseous products during the pyrolysis of waste textiles. Compared to unreduced NiO/Al2O3, increasing the reduction temperature (300–700 °C) led to a gradual decrease in liquid-phase products and a notable increase in gas-phase products, with the latter rising by 10.59% at 700 °C. Most strikingly, hydrogen gas production increased by 6.42% under the same conditions. Multi-characterization analyses, including XRD, TEM, and H2-TPR, revealed significant aggregation of highly dispersed Ni species in NiO/Al2O3at higher reduction temperatures. The emergence of XRD characteristic peaks and the (111) crystal face of metallic Ni (Ni0) became apparent at 700 °C. More importantly, the XPS test inferred that the increasement of hydrogen-rich gas production was ascribed to the appropriate Ni0/Ni2+ratio, and the highest hydrogen yield of 41.50% was achieved as the Ni0/Ni2+ratio reached about 1.57. This work not only provides an effective solution for the consumption of waste textiles, but also converts it into high value-added hydrogen-rich gas.

A novel NiO/CeO2-mSiO2 nanocages with peroxidase-mimetic activity for ultra-sensitive biosensing

Ying Zhu,Tongkai Ji,Xingwei Cai,Jing Wang

A novel NiO/CeO 2 −mSiO 2 nanocages with superior peroxidase−like activities due to the synergetic effect between NiO and CeO 2 were fabricated by a simple etching−precipitation method with core−shell structured Cu 2 O@mSiO 2 as a sacrificial template. Based on the peroxidase−like activity of the NiO/CeO 2 −mSiO 2 nanocages, an enzyme cascade−triggered colorimetric sensing platform was exploited for alkaline phosphatase (ALP) detection, owing to the fact that ascorbic acid (AA) that is the ALP enzymatic hydrolysis product of ascorbic acid 2−phosphate (AAP) can efficiently reduce the oxidation product of TMB (oxTMB) generated under the catalysis of the NiO/CeO 2 −mSiO 2 . For the sensing of ALP, a good linear response was observed in the range of 0.0005–1.25 mU mL −1 with the limit of detection (LOD) as low as 0.00048 mU mL −1 . Furthermore, the proposed enzyme cascade−triggered colorimetric sensing platform could be further explored for sensing of tyrosinase, according to the fact that dopamine (DA) the catalytic product of tyramine (Tyr) by tyrosinase could initiate the redox reaction with the oxTMB acquired under the catalysis of the NiO/CeO 2 −mSiO 2 . A wide linear response was found for tyrosinase detection from 0.02 mU mL −1 to 3.4 U mL −1 with a LOD as low as 0.002 U mL −1 . This work not only offers a facile and effective approach to fabricate nanozymes with excellent catalytic activity, but also provides a promising enzyme cascade−triggered colorimetric method for the ultra−sensitive detection of biological enzymes.

Bimetallic Ni/V-MOFs-derived Ni3V2O8@NiO hollow microspheres for ultrasensitive detection of triethylamine

Wangchang Geng,Pengfei Song,Xinrou Cao,Libing Duan

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-derived metal oxides are characterized by high porosity, large specific surface area, controllable composition, and tunable pore size, which make them have good potential as gas sensing materials. In this paper, Ni 3 V 2 O 8 @NiO hollow microspheres derived from bimetallic Ni/V-MOFs were synthesized using a three-step method (solvothermal method, cation-exchange method, and annealing process). XRD, Raman, SEM, TEM, XPS, and BET techniques were employed to investigate the structure, morphology, specific surface area, pore size distributions, elemental composition, and chemical state of Ni 3 V 2 O 8 @NiO composites. Gas sensing performance studies showed that the NV@NiO-2 sensor exhibited higher response (43.7) to 100 ppm triethylamine at a lower operating temperature (240℃), shorter response/recovery time (88 s/127 s), higher selectivity, lower detection limit (4.5 ppb), and better repeatability. In addition, the NV@NiO-2 sensor exhibited a strong linear relationship (R 2  = 0.996) between response and gas concentration across a range of 1–100 ppm. The present work serves as a valuable reference for the preparation of triethylamine sensing materials with high specific surface area, high porosity, high response and high selectivity.

Three-dimensional NiO/Ni self-floating porous composite materials for efficient solar interfacial evaporation

Ru Song,Ningshuang Zhang,Peng Wang,Hao Ding,Shiyou Li

The scarcity of freshwater resources and energy crisis are major challenges to the progress of human society. Recently, solar-driven interfacial water evaporation utilizes photothermal conversion materials to convert solar energy into thermal energy , which possesses great application potential in seawater desalination and sewage treatment . Here, we fabricated porous nickel sponge (NSP) composite photothermal material (NiO-NSP) containing abundant NiO nanoneedles array. This in situ-grown NiO with enhanced bonding between photothermal material and substrate can be used as a solar absorber directly without consuming additional photothermal material compared to conventional coating and cladding on the carrier surface. Due to the multi-scattering induced light trapping effect of the semiconductor NiO nanoneedles array on the surface of nickel fibers, resulting in light absorption up to 96.5 %. NiO-NSP evaporators have an abundance of interconnected porous channels for water supply , which results in strong capillary action to pump water to the evaporation interface efficiently. Moreover, the highly dispersed nanoneedles array expand the evaporation surface area. Consequently, the NiO-NSP evaporator delivers an excellent evaporation rate of 1.78 kg m −2 h −1 and a photothermal conversion efficiency of 84.7 % at one sun radiation. In addition, the micron-sized porous mesh structure of NiO-NSP dissolve salt crystals and diffuse them downward into the bulk brine, exhibiting excellent salt resistance and remarkable seawater desalination stability. Moreover, NiO-NSP solar evaporators has been demonstrated to possess excellent ability to purify dye and heavy metal ion wastewater. Therefore, the NiO-NSP high-performance evaporator produced by straightforward process proved to be suitable for solar seawater desalination and wastewater purification.

Porous NiO/CuCo2O4 nanocrystalline heterojunction composites derived from polymetallic coordination polymers for advanced supercapacitor

Caofeng Zhang,Fang Cui,Qinghai Ma,Tieyu Cui

NiO is considered as a promising electrode material owing to its high theoretical capacitance. However, the inherent low conductivity and huge volume expansion during cycling limit its practical application. Constructing composites is considered as an effective way to improve charge transfer efficiency and enhance electrochemical performance. Therefore, many researchers are devoted to combining NiO with other materials to build composites to solve this problem. However, the preparation of composites with uniformly distributed heterojunctions in a simple way remains a major challenge. Herein, porous NiO/CuCo 2 O 4 composites with uniformly distributed heterojunctions were fabricated via a facile and cost-effective method. Benefiting from the porous structure and the synergistic effect of NiO and CuCo 2 O 4 , the NiO/CuCo 2 O 4 –450 electrode exhibits outstanding specific capacitance of 962 F g −1 at the current density of 1 A g −1 . Additionally, with porous NiO/CuCo 2 O 4 –450 composites as anode and active carbon (AC) as cathode, the asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) provides an energy density of 25.17 Wh kg −1 at a power density of 400 W kg −1 and an excellent cycle life. This study provides a facile and favourable strategy for the preparation of composites with distinguished electrochemical properties.

Synthesis of heterointerfaces in NiO/SnO2 coated nitrogen-doped graphene for efficient lithium storage

Shujuan Yin,Xueqian Zhang,Dongdong Liu,Xiaoxiao Huang,Yishan Wang,Guangwu Wen

Currently, it remains a challenge to make comprehensive improvements to overcome the disadvantages of volume expansion, Li2O irreversibility and low conductivity of SnO2. Heterostructure construction has been investigated as an effective strategy to promote electron transfer and surface reaction kinetics, leading to high electrochemical performance. Herein, NiO/SnO2 heterojunction modified nitrogen doped graphene (NiO/SnO2@NG) anode materials were prepared using hydrothermal and carbonization techniques. Based on the excellent structural advantages, sufficiently small NiO/SnO2 heterojunction nanoparticles increase the interfacial density to promote Li2O decomposition, and the built-in electric field accelerates the charge transport rate to improve the conductivity. The three-dimensional porous graphene framework effectively mitigates volume expansion during cycling and stabilizes the reactive interface of electrode materials. The results show that the NiO/SnO2@NG mixture has high reversible specific capacity (938.8 mA h g−1 after 450 cycles at 0.1 A g−1), superior multiplicity performance (374.5 mA h g−1 at 3.0 A g−1) and long cycle life (685.3 mA h g−1 after 1000 cycles at 0.5 A g−1). Thus, this design of introducing NiO to form heterostructures with SnO2 is directly related to enhancing the electrochemical performance of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs).

Charge redistribution in NiO induced by Cu2+ doping for enhanced electrochromic kinetics and stability

Lili Zhao,Jie Chao,Wenqing Zheng,Geng Cheng,Xinghao Long,Xi Chen,Zhiyong Zhu,Hailu Liu,Jie Gao,Lei Miao

Nickel oxide (NiO) is an ideal candidate for electrochromic smart windows due to its neutral color appearance.   However,   its practical application is hindered by narrow spectral modulation, low electrical conductivity, and poor cycling stability. While strategic doping offers a promising solution to these limitations, the underlying mechanisms remain insufficiently elucidated. In this work, we strategically employ Cu 2+ doping to investigate how controlled doping optimizes charge transport and enhances electrochromic performance. The optimized NiO film with 3 % Cu 2+ doping exhibits remarkable improvements, achieving broadband optical modulation (82.7 % at 550 nm and 55.1 % at 1000 nm), faster switching kinetics (1.90/4.11 s), and excellent cycling stability (negligible degradation after 3,000 cycles). Theoretical and experimental analyses reveal that these improvements originate from doping induced charge redistribution, which stabilizes Ni 3+ species with oxygen vacancies, increases charge carrier density, and reduces OH − binding energy. These findings establish a clear structure-performance relationship between electronic structure modulation and electrochromic behavior. Furthermore, this mechanistic understanding guided the fabrication of a bifunctional device that integrates optical modulation with energy storage functionality. The elucidation of the charge redistribution mechanism provides a targeted doping strategy for designing high-performance electrochromic materials and offers a practical pathway toward advanced multifunctional smart windows.

A dual-electrode oxide ion sensor for molten carbonates

Di Chen,Kaifa Du,Wenmiao Li,Bowen Deng,Wei Li,Huayi Yin,Dihua Wang

The concentration of oxide ions (O 2– ) determines the physicochemical properties of molten carbonates and modulates (electro)chemical reactions. However, it still lacks an efficient and reliable method to measure O 2– concentration in molten carbonates. Herein, we design a dual-electrode sensor to monitor the O 2– content in real time. For sensing O 2– in the target molten medium, we deliberately selected a Ni/NiO redox couple to serve as an O 2– -responding internal reference membrane electrode (RE in ) assembled in an yttrium-stabilized zirconia tube, which is accessible to achieve a stable and excellent response of O 2– from the bulk melt. To measure the membrane potential of RE in that is associated with the O 2– concentration in the bulk melt, we paired a Ag/Ag 2 SO 4 external reference electrode (RE ex ), which can indicate the potential difference between RE in and RE ex by measuring the open circuit potential (OCP), therefore figuring out the O 2– concentration based on Nernst equation. Taking molten Li 2 CO 3 -Na 2 CO 3 -K 2 CO 3 for example, the homemade dual-electrode sensor is well-responsive with a reliable linear correlation coefficient of R 2  = 0.9992 even the O 2– content is as low as 1.27 × 10 −4  mol kg −1 . The proposed dual-electrode gives clues to the rational design of anion sensor for relatively high-temperature systems.
