Deep eutectic solvent-regulated polyacrylamide/alginate/PEDOT:PSS conductive hydrogels with improved low-temperature performance

Rongmei Qin,Xin Deng,Haoxiang Liu,Peng Cao,Zejia Dai,Fengxuan Guo,Qiong Zhang,Jiashun Wang

Conductive hydrogels for wearable strain sensors usually suffer from water crystallization and polymer network rigidification under subzero conditions, resulting in reduced flexibility and compromised sensing stability. To address this challenge, a deep eutectic solvent (DES)-regulated sodium alginate/polyacrylamide (SA/PAM) double-network hydrogel integrated with PEDOT:PSS was developed to construct a mixed ionic–electronic conductive network. Unlike previously reported single-network PAM-based DES hydrogels, the present SA/PAM double-network architecture combines DES-mediated dynamic interactions with PEDOT:PSS-based electronic conduction, enabling synergistic enhancement of antifreezing capability, mechanical robustness, and electromechanical sensing performance. The optimized 30DES-SPP hydrogel exhibited a tensile strength of 0.38 MPa and an elongation at break of 1767% at room temperature. It also achieved a gauge factor (GF) of 8.51 at 500% strain. After storage at −25 °C, the hydrogel maintained an elongation at break of 1514%, demonstrating excellent low-temperature tolerance and flexibility. In addition, stable and repeatable electrical responses were observed during repeated deformation. The hydrogel was successfully applied to human motion monitoring, Morse code communication, and handwriting pressure recognition. This work presents an effective strategy that integrates DES-regulated double-network reinforcement with conductive network engineering, offering promising potential for wearable sensing devices and flexible human–machine interfaces under subzero conditions. Mechanically robust PEDOT:PSS/Ti3C2Tx MXene–silver nanowire nanocomposites for high-performance electromagnetic interference shielding

Naseer Abou Bakar,Nadeem Muhammad,Younis Adnan,Aziz-ur-Rehman,Rehman Ubaid ur,Ali Tahir,Hussain Shahzad

The rapid advancement of highly integrated and compact electronics has spurred an urgent demand for ultrathin, lightweight, and flexible electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials that combine superior shielding effectiveness (SE) with robust mechanical durability. To address this challenge, we engineered flexible and lightweight composite films composed of MXene nanosheets, 1D silver nanowires (AgNWs), and a conductive PEDOT: PSS polymer via a scalable vacuum-assisted filtration process. The resulted co-continuous segregated structure endows the composite films with exceptional electrical conductivity, mechanical resilience, and outstanding EMI shielding performance. Notably, the ultrathin (0.014 mm) binary MXene/AgNW (1:1) BMA50 composite film achieves an exceptional EMI SE of 65 dB in the X-band (8.2–12.4 GHz), corresponding to a remarkable specific shielding effectiveness (SSE) of 26,784 dB cm 2  g −1 . Furthermore, the ternary composite film TMA10 (0.032 mm) incorporating MXene, AgNWs, and PEDOT: PSS exhibited an EMI SE of 50 dB with improved mechanical strength (120 MPa) compared to the binary composite with an SSE of 6847 dB cm 2  g −1 . All fabricated films exhibit a shielding efficiency greater than 99.99%, making them highly suitable for practical applications. The PEDOT:PSS/Ti 3 C 2 T x –AgNW ternary composite exhibited significantly enhanced mechanical performance compared to the MXene–AgNW binary system, achieving a maximum tensile strength of 120 MPa, a Young’s modulus of approximately 2.8 GPa, and superior toughness, owing to the synergistic reinforcement of the conductive polymer and AgNW-bridged MXene network. The synergistic interaction between AgNWs and MXene within the PEDOT:PSS matrix enhances electrical conductivity and forms a porous yet mechanically robust framework, enabling efficient EMI shielding while maintaining flexibility. This scalable strategy offers a promising route for high-performance flexible EMI shielding materials.

Facile fabrication of W18O49/PEDOT:PSS/ITO-PET flexible electrochromic films by atomizing spray deposition

Wenli Li,Jiangbo Sun,Jie Zhang,Olatoye Abiola Ganiyat,Yanbin Cui

Electrochromic smart devices with tunable optical properties are on the verge of replacing the conventional windows and curtains. The preparation and commercialization of electrochromic materials are majorly based on vapor phase deposition which is limited by high price and difficult production processes. Here, atomizing spray deposition process is developed for the production of large area, low-cost electrochromic film. W 18 W18 O 49 , a promising inorganic EC material, was used to prepare EC film on indium tin oxide-polyethylene terephthalate (ITO-PET) flexible substrate. Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) was also printed on ITO-PET substrate to improve the conductivity of substrate and the adhesion between W 18 O 49 and substrate. The experimental results showed that the transmittance modulation ( Δ Δ T) of W 18 O 49 /PEDOT:PSS/ITO-PET flexible EC film was 63.34% corresponding to a wavelength of 633 nm. The coloring and bleaching response times of W 18 O 49 /PEDOT:PSS/ITO-PET EC film were 18.7 s and 23.2 s, respectively. Furthermore, the as-prepared flexible EC film by atomizing spray deposition method had excellent cyclic stability, and the optical transmittance of the film still retains a high value (70%) after continuous coloring and bleaching for 6000 s.

PEDOT:PSS-Assisted Exfoliation and Functionalization of 2D Nanosheets for High-Performance Organic Solar Cells

Wang Xing,Yusheng Chen,Xiaoxi Wu,Xiaozhou Xu,Pan Ye,Ting Zhu,Qingyu Guo,Liqiu Yang,Weiwei Li,Hui Huang

Here, a facial and scalable method for efficient exfoliation of bulk transition metal dichalcogenides (TMD) and graphite in aqueous solution with poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) to prepare single- and few-layer nanosheets is demonstrated. Importantly, these TMD nanosheets retain the single crystalline characteristic, which is essential for application in organic solar cells (OSCs). The hybrid PEDOT:PSS/WS 2 ink prepared by a simple centrifugation is directly integrated as a hole extraction layer for high-performance OSCs. Compared with PEDOT:PSS, the PEDOT:PSS/WS 2 -based devices provide a remarkable power conversion efficiency due to the “island” morphology and benzoid–quinoid transition. This study not only demonstrates a novel method for preparing single- and few-layer TMD and graphene nanosheets but also paves a way for their applications without further complicated processing.

Humidity sensor based on PEDOT:PSS/CeO2 composite material for respiratory monitoring of anesthetized patients

Jiafeng Yang,Zheng Zhang,Jiayi Fu,Yumei Wu,Qinglan Fu,Likun Gong

A novel PEDOT:PSS/CeO 2 nanocomposite with intimate p-n heterojunction interface was successfully fabricated via hydrothermal and in-situ polymerization methods. • The sensor exhibits outstanding humidity sensing performance: high response (209%), fast response/recovery (5.5 s/16.1 s), wide detection range (0–97% RH). • DFT calculations reveal that the PEDOT:PSS/CeO 2 composite possesses the strongest adsorption energy for H 2 O molecules and significant interfacial charge transfer. • The sensor was integrated into a wearable device and combined with a CNN algorithm, achieving 100% accuracy in real-time recognition of six simulated respiratory patterns. This study prepared a novel poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate)/cerium dioxide (PEDOT:PSS/CeO 2 ) nanocomposite via a hydrothermal method combined with in-situ chemical oxidative polymerization, and applied it in a high-performance resistive humidity sensor. Systematic material characterization confirmed the formation of an intimate heterointerface between CeO 2 and the PEDOT:PSS polymer network within the composite, accompanied by significant interfacial charge interaction and PEDOT chain conformational changes. Benefiting from the abundant oxygen vacancy active sites introduced by CeO 2 and the synergistic p-n heterojunction effect formed with PEDOT:PSS, the fabricated sensor demonstrated outstanding comprehensive performance across a wide relative humidity (RH) range of 0–97%: a high response (209%), excellent linearity (R 2  = 0.9626), rapid response/recovery times (5.5 s/16.1 s), and good long-term stability. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations further revealed, at the atomic scale, that the composite possesses the strongest adsorption energy for water molecules and exhibits significant charge transfer, providing theoretical support for its enhanced humidity sensing mechanism. As a proof of concept, the sensor was integrated into a wearable device. Combined with a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) algorithm, it successfully achieved real-time recognition of six simulated breathing patterns, including apnea, with 99.17% accuracy, demonstrating its great potential for monitoring the respiratory status of anesthetized patients. Alcohol-Introduced PEDOT:PSS and CuSCN Layers Synergistically Construct GaAs-Based Electrodes for Water Splitting

Yanling Wang,JunKun Wang,Wentao Qu,Jiehui Liang,Shaohua Xie,Xiangrong Li,Wenliang Wang,Guoqiang Li

GaAs/PEDOT:PSS exhibits excellent optoelectronic properties and a matched energy band structure, showing great potential for PEC water splitting. However, the insulating PSS causes severe conductivity loss and low charge separation efficiency in the composite. Herein, n-propanol, 1,2-propanediol, and glycerol are used to modify PEDOT:PSS, with their –OH groups forming electrostatic interactions with PSS’s –SO3H to weaken the PEDOT-PSS Coulombic force and promote PSS dissociation. XPS, FTIR, and AFM characterizations confirm that glycerol achieves the optimal PSS dissociation by forming a multi-dentate hydrogen bond network, which also optimizes PEDOT’s conjugated system for enhanced light absorption. GaAs/glycerol@PEDOT:PSS delivers a photocurrent density of 17.8 mA/cm2 at 1.23 V vs RHE (78% higher than GaAs/PEDOT:PSS) with an ABPE of 12.65% at 0.36 V vs RHE. Introducing CuSCN as a hole transport layer further reduces the electrode impedance and forms a stepped energy band with GaAs and PEDOT:PSS for directional hole transport. The resultant GaAs/CuSCN/glycerol@PEDOT:PSS exhibits a photocurrent density of 20.8 mA/cm2 at 1.23 V vs RHE, an ABPE of 13.75%, a high H2 evolution rate of 138.6 μmol/h, and a Faradaic efficiency of 97.74%. This work provides an effective interfacial engineering strategy for the rational design of high-performance GaAs-based PEC electrodes for water splitting.

Sandpaper-Induced Wrinkled PDMS/Nanosilica Membrane for Assembling AgNWs and PEDOT:PSS Stretchable Transparent Electrodes

Longqi Zhao,Mingxiang Xu,Xinwen Hong,Jiahua Chen,Chenhu Mei,Xuejing Li,Xiaoyan Li

Developing stretchable transparent electrodes that simultaneously achieve high conductivity, optical transparency, mechanical stretchability, and environmental stability remains a significant challenge. In this study, a fluorosilane-modified sandpaper template was employed to create a nanosilica-enhanced PDMS composite membrane with a wrinkled surface structure, which enhances the mechanical properties and facilitates the ordered assembly of the conductive materials. The high modulus of the nanosilica preserved the micronano structural integrity after demolding without sacrificing membrane flexibility, while the textured surface and relatively hydrophilic nature enable straightforward surface modification. Through spin-coating and thermal treatment, silver nanowires (AgNWs) and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) were sequentially deposited onto the structured membrane, yielding a dense, well-adhered conductive network. The resulting flexible composite electrode retained optical transparency while exhibiting excellent electrical conductivity, enhanced stretchability, and outstanding environmental stability, underscoring its potential for wearable thermal management and strain sensing applications.

Humidity-Responsive and Self-Healable Conductive PEDOT:PSS-Based Hydrogel Fibers for Multifunctional Wearable Sensors

Haodi Zeng,Baichun Long,Liang Zhang,Qiang Gao,Peizhi Zhu,Chunxia Gao

Conductive hydrogel fibers have demonstrated their promising applications in wearable devices due to their distinct advantages, including mechanical flexibility, high conductivity, and wearability. However, the damage to a section of the fibers may affect the operation and applications due to the fibers requiring additional weaving and cycle applications. In this study, humidity-responsive and water-enabled self-healing poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) doped with poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS)/carboxymethyl cellulose sodium (CMC-Na)/poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) composite conductive hydrogel fibers (named as PPCP) have been successfully synthesized via a wet-spinning technique. The introduction of [BMIM]BF4 ionic liquids (ILs) and a small amount of Mn2+ in an ethanol/water coagulation bath system greatly enhances the spinnability and the properties of subsequent fibers. The resultant PPCP2 fibers not only exhibit high conductivity (37.6 ± 1.6 S·cm–1) and good flexibility (158.2 ± 3.9%) but also possess humidity responsiveness in the relative wide humidity range (40–90% RH, GF = 1.18) and water-enabled self-healing ability. These features not only satisfy the demands of human health monitoring but also suggest potential applications in water-enabled healing wearable fabrics. Consequently, as a proof of concept, assembled PPCP2 fibrous sensors demonstrate an excellent responsive property to monitor human movements and respiratory patterns, indicating their potential as multifunctional sensors for applications in biosensors and intelligent soft robotics.

Alcohol solvent treatment of PEDOT:PSS hole transport layer for optimized inverted perovskite solar cells

Liu Yue,Cai Hongkun,Chu Yinhuan,Su Jian,Ye Xiaofang,Ni Jian,Li Juan,Zhang Jianjun

Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) is widely used as a hole transport materials in perovskite solar cells, due to a variety of suitable properties. However, the existence of the insulated PSS chain leads to the low electrical conductivity, which should be improved for the further development of inverted perovskite solar cells. In this study, three alcohol solvents were proposed for post-treatment of PEDOT:PSS thin films, which utilized the electrostatic shielding effect of alcohol molecules to promote phase separation of the PEDOT chain and the PSS chain. At the same time, The insulated PSS chain was removed by dissolving in highly hydrophilic alcohols. In the end, we successfully improved the conductivity of PEDOT:PSS thin films. By ethanol solvent treatment, the short-circuit current density of the perovskite solar cell based on glass/ITO/PEDOT:PSS was increased from 15.64 to 17.45 mA/cm 2 , the power conversion efficiency (PCE) reached 11.36%, which was 25% higher than the traditional structure. For flexible devices, a preliminary PCE of 9.20% was achieved.

High-Efficiency Stable Flexible Organic Solar Cells with PEDOT:PSS Electrodes via Superacid Fumigation Treatment

Rongjiang Wen,Huihui Huang,Juanyong Wan,Shuangchun Wen,Jinzhao Wang,Xi Fan

Strong acid treatment is regarded as the most effective approach to increase the electrical conductivity of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(4-styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) electrodes. However, the conventional soaking treatments of strong acids have drawbacks, including limited flexibility of PEDOT:PSS electrodes coated on thermoplastic underlying substrates, high preparation cost with large acid consumption, and moderate stability of flexible organic solar cells (OSCs). Herein, a unique and cost-effective fumigation treatment using trifluoromethanesulfonic acid (CF 3 SO 3 H) vapors is proposed. The CF 3 SO 3 H fumigation treatment leads to a highly conductive, smooth, homogeneous, and flexible PEDOT:PSS electrode. On the basis of the CF 3 SO 3 H-fumigated PEDOT:PSS electrodes, the inverted flexible OSCs yield a high power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 13.62%. Moreover, the flexible solar cells maintain most (≈91%) of the initial efficiency in long-term storage. This work provides a novel route to make solution-processed flexible OSCs simultaneously have a high PCE and good storage stability.

Glycerol-crosslinked PEDOT:PSS as bifunctional binder for Si anodes: Improved interfacial compatibility and conductivity

Xuejiao Liu,Jiantao Zai,Asma Iqbal,Ming Chen,Nazakat Ali,Rongrong Qi,Xuefeng Qian

Developing conductive polymer binders is a new way to enhance the electric connectivity and mechanical contact of Si based anode material. While the linear structure of commercial PEDOT:PSS cannot effectively alleviate the volume expansion of Si. Herein, glycerol was introduced as a cross-linker to PEDOT:PSS binder for Si anodes, which can further improve the interfacial compatibility between silicon and PEDOT:PSS. After crosslinking, the peel force increased 2 times. As a result, the Si nanoparticles anode with the glycerol-crosslinked binder exhibited a high reversible capacity of 1951.5 mAh g −1 after 200 cycles at 0.5 A g −1 and superior rate capability (804 mAh g −1 at a high current of 8.0 A g −1 ) for the inherent superior conductivity of PEDOT:PSS.

A low-hysteresis, self-adhesive and conductive PAA/PEDOT:PSS hydrogel enabled body-conformable electronics

Qiang Gao,Chao Li,Mingxu Wang,Jiadeng Zhu,Chunxia Gao

Biomedical hydrogels always suffer from curvilinearity, deformability, and wetness associated with bio-tissues, which are therefore limited by low stability and longevity in practical applications. To overcome these issues, we have proposed a robust PAA/PEDOT conductive hydrogel and investigated its performance by using a low-crosslink-density polyacrylic acid (PAA) hydrogel with 82 wt% water. Meanwhile, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly (styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) has been used as both a major junction point and a conducting network contractor. Benefiting from the introduction of PEDOT:PSS, the resultant composite hydrogel exhibits strong adhesion (37.2 kPa), well-matched modulus with skin tissue (∼10 kPa), low swelling (2.88), and negligible hysteresis (η = 2.7% of 200% stretching, energy loss coefficient). As a scalable application platform, we have further demonstrated the potential application of this novel hydrogel as body-conformable electronics in a series of conceptual displays, including a full range of human motion responses, ECG signal detection, TENG device assembly, and energy harvesting application.
