Comprehensively improved mechanical properties of silane crosslinked polypropylene/ethylene propylene diene monomer elastomer blends

Hui Peng,Min Lu,Hao Wang,Zhongzhou Zhang,Fucheng Lv,Mingjun Niu,Wanjie Wang

The properties and structure of silane crosslinked polypropylene (PP)/ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) elastomer blends had been carried out. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and gel content tests were employed to evaluate the crosslinking reaction of PP/EPDM blends. Crosslinking efficiency of PP/EPDM blends was investigated using thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimeter, dynamic mechanical analysis, dynamic rheology, and tensile testing. Tan δ curves of silane crosslinked PP/EPDM blends exhibited an obvious “gel point” originated from the formation of dynamic crosslinking network. The blend corresponding to the “gel point” presented comprehensively improved mechanical properties. These results demonstrated that characteristic rheological parameters showed close correlations with key mechanical properties of silane crosslinked PP/EPDM blends. Scanning electron microscopy images illustrated that crosslinking had remarkably changed the morphologies of PP/EPDM blends. The large deformation mechanism of these blends had been suggested.

Thermo-adjusted self-healing epoxy resins based on Diels–Alder dynamic chemical reaction

Yunpeng Zhang,Jiaofeng Ye,Dongan Qu,Haitao Wang,Changsheng Chai,Libang Feng

Micro-damage in materials could be repaired by endowing materials with self-healing performance. Herein, an epoxy resin with excellent self-healing performance grounded on thermo-reversible Diels–Alder dynamic chemical reaction was developed. Results showed that the bending strength and adhesive behavior of epoxy resin were influenced dramatically upon treatment with various temperatures. More importantly, damages created in epoxy resin could be repaired completely after suitable heat treatments. What is more, the healed epoxy resin exhibited much higher bending strength and adhesive performance than the pristine one did. The materials could be damaged and then repaired repeatedly. Meanwhile, the as-prepared self-healing epoxy resin exhibited excellent thermal reversibility and controllable adhesion. The thermo-adjusted self-healing performance endowed epoxy resin with recyclable and reusable performance. Therefore, the research made it possible of recycling waste epoxy resins.

Flow mark defects reduction of injection-molded polypropylene by dynamically vulcanized polyolefin elastomer

Guodian Zhu,Zhuoxi Li,Jingqi Shang,Jiao Ding,Yuanyuan Li,Guoqiang Yin

Flow mark defects (FMs) worsen surface esthetics and mechanical properties of injection-molded polypropylene (PP). In this work, experiments and dissipative particle dynamic (DPD) simulations were used to investigate the effect of dynamically vulcanized polyolefin elastomer (POE) on FMs of injection-molded PP. Significant FMs reduction was achieved by dynamically vulcanized POE. DPD simulations indicated that POE molecules were randomly distributed in the PP, while dynamic vulcanization led to the formation of elastomeric quasi-clusters, and these quasi-clusters were able to reduce FMs. Both DPD simulations and scanning electron microscopy results showed that more agglomerates with longer and irregular shapes formed with longer vulcanization time and more initiators. The formation of too many agglomerates resulted in different pock surface defects. Dynamically vulcanized POE produced at optimal reaction conditions did not affect the tensile strength, tensile modulus, flexural strength, and flexural modulus, while breaking elongation and notched Izod impact strength of injection-molded PP decreased slightly. This work suggests that the addition of dynamically vulcanized POE may be a promising way to reduce FMs of injection-molded PP.

Preparation and characterization of maleic anhydride-grafted desulfurization rubber powder by free-radical polymerization

Peipei Kong,Xianhua Chen,Gang Xu,Wei Wei

The objective of the article was to enhance the recycling value of solid waste rubber by surface functionalization of desulfurized rubber powder using a one-pot method based on free-radical polymerization theory. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and elemental analysis were used to characterize the maleic anhydride-grafted desulfurized rubber powder, and the grafting mechanism was also investigated. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed that maleic anhydride was grafted onto the desulfurized rubber powder. Thermogravimetric analysis indicated that the maleic anhydride-grafted desulfurized rubber powder and desulfurized rubber powder possessed different thermal properties and structure. The results of scanning electron microscopy and elemental analysis illustrated that the surface of the desulfurized rubber powder was covered with a layer of fold-like maleic anhydride polymer. The mechanism of grafting desulfurized rubber powder with maleic anhydride may be achieved by replacing the active α-H on the methylene group of the desulfurized rubber macromolecule chain.

Synergistic effect of intumescent flame retardant and zinc borate on linear low-density polyethylene

Jing jing Mu,Ru Zhou,Chang Liu,Teng Su

A series of novel intumescent flame retardant (IFR) based on melamine, neopentyl glycol, and aluminum diethylphosphinate were prepared and tested. In addition, the synergistic effect of the novel IFR and zinc borate (ZB) on the flame retardancy of LLDPE composites was investigated. The structures of novel IFR and ZB were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The limiting oxygen index (LOI) increased from 19.3% for the pure LLDPE to 27% for the 25 wt% IFR/5 wt% ZB composites and the composites achieved the desired V-0 rating in the UL-94 test. Thermogravimetric analysis showed that the addition of IFR/ZB reduced the pyrolysis rate of the LLDPE composites at high temperatures and increased the amount of the char residues, and the char residue of LLDPE-5 reached 12.1 wt% at 700°C. Cone calorimetry (CCT) data showed that the peak of total heat release, heat release rate, and fire growth index were comparatively reduced, indicating that the addition of IFR/ZB decreased the fire hazard of LLDPE composites. The formation of a compact and thermally stable char layer on the surfaces of LLDPE composites was revealed from the scanning electrone microscopy images and digital photographs of the char residue after the CCT tests.

Effects of Methylaluminoxane Modifications on Tuning the Bis(Imino)Pyridyl Iron-Catalyzed Oligomerization of Ethylene

Jian Ye,Yu Li,Binbo Jiang,Wei Zhang,Jingdai Wang,Zuwei Liao,Zhengliang Huang,Yongrong Yang,Zhibin Ye

For the purpose of reducing the simultaneous production of insoluble polymers during the bis(imino)pyridyl iron-catalyzed ethylene oligomerization, various modifiers like phenol, anisole, 1-naphthol, 2-naphthol, benzoic acid, cyclohexanol, cyclohexyl carbinol, and benzyl alcohol were employed to modify the co-catalyst methylaluminoxane (MAO) and tune the catalytic behaviors in this work. It was found that phenol could serve as a good polymer-retarding modifier, the phenolic hydroxyl group was responsible for the interactions with MAO. Further increasing the aromatic ring size from phenol to naphthols was beneficial for retarding the polymer formation. Meanwhile, an increase of the acidity of the modifiers would promote the interactions between them and MAO, but also tend to easily deactivate the catalytic system. In addition, the alcohol modifiers with a phenol-like structure were also studied, their deactivation effect was found to be stronger than their polymer-retarding effect, making them difficult to obtain a satisfactory low polymer formation with the catalytic system remaining a high activity. Fabrication of UV curable coating for super hydrophobic cotton fabrics

Lixiang Shen,Ya Pan,Heqing Fu

A super hydrophobic cotton fabric was successfully prepared by a facile dip-coating method using a synthetic fluorine-free and UV curable super hydrophobic coating solution without additional particles. The obtained cotton fabric exhibited super hydrophobic property with a water contact angle above 159.5° and sliding angle 7.5°. Moreover, the treated cotton fabric could retain its super hydrophobic performance even after abrasion and accelerated laundering, as well as for different kinds of corrosive liquids. The coated cotton fabric was used to make up a surface tension-driven, gravity-assisted, floating oil–water separation device with separation efficiency above 99%. Additionally, the oil–water separation efficiency of super hydrophobic cotton fabric always was above 98% after 30 recycle times for cyclohexane–water mixture. POLYM. ENG. Oil-impregnated monomer casting nylon composites reinforced by graphene oxide and Lanthanum(III) chloride

Yanwen Zhao,Qing Meng,Qian Zhang,Fan Wang,Qin Wang,Yuexin Wang

Oil-impregnated monomer casting (OMC) nylon composites reinforced by graphene oxide and Lanthanum(III) chloride (LaCl 3 ) were prepared by anionic ring-opening polymerization in the presence of sodium hydroxide catalyst and toluene-2, 4-diisocyanate cocatalyst. The cross-linked GO was formed by the coordination and electrostatic interactions between La 3+ and the carboxyl on the edge of GO, which resulted in an obvious reinforcement for the OMC nylon composites. The effects of different rare earth contents on mechanical and tribological properties of the composites were carried out. The results showed that the composites exhibited excellent comprehensive properties when 0.01 wt% GO and 0.007 wt% LaCl 3 were incorporated in OMC nylon. The elastic modulus, flexural strength, flexural modulus, compressive strength, notched impact strength, and elongation-at-break for the OMC nylon/GO/LaCl 3 composites increased by 6.1, 9.9, 18.2, 7.2, 40.8, and 24.4%, respectively, and the tensile strength was slightly improved. In addition, the abrasion quantity was reduced. POLYM. ENG. SCI., 59:982–988, 2019. © 2019 Society of Plastics Engineers

The effect of alginate on the mechanical, thermal, and rheological properties of nano calcium carbonate-filled polylactic acid composites

Chengtao Gao,Jianbing Guo,Haibo Xie

Traditional plasticizers to modify polylactic acid (PLA) usually leads to limited biodegradation, due to its inherent non-biodegradability of additives. In this work, we report a melt blending method to modify PLA using the alginic acid and two different alginates combined with nano CaCO 3 , a fully sustainable and biodegradable component. And, the mechanical, thermal, and rheological properties of the composites are investigated. We demonstrated that the filled samples show a lower tensile strength and higher impact strength which means a toughening effect occurs. Dynamic mechanical analysis experiments showed that the calcium alginate-filled samples show higher performances than other filled samples not only in static mechanical but also dynamic mechanical properties. The fracture morphology of the samples shows that a better interfacial reaction has been constituted for gel calcium alginate between CaCO 3 and PLA. Nevertheless, the thermogravimetric analysis results indicate that a lower thermal stability has been achieved in alginate filled samples. Chemorheological study indicated the alginate-filled samples also show a lower modulus and viscosity than neat PLA. It was found that the complex viscosity decrease with the addition of alginates, in comparison with PLA/CaCO 3 composites, and the samples filled with calcium alginate show a higher viscosity than those of sodium alginate and alginic acid. The alginate derivatives showed interesting potential as new green plastic additives attributed to origin from the biodegradable natural resources with a polymeric matrix. POLYM. ENG. Biodegradable body temperature-responsive shape memory polyurethanes with self-healing behavior

Li Shuai,Zhang Jun,Chen Jianjun,Yao Ming,Liu Xuepeng,Jiang Zhiguo

Biodegradable body temperature-responsive shape memory polyurethanes, with self-healing function, were synthesized here from PCDL, MDI and different chain extenders, in which the chain extenders are designed to adjust their transition temperatures and shape memory properties. Once deformed at proper temperature, they show more than 96% shape fixation until heated near body temperature, where they recover their original shape (100%) within 20 s. Moreover, these polyurethanes could be self-healing at proper temperature, which makes them available in many medical fields. POLYM. ENG. Enhancing the Interfacial Properties of Composites by Grafting Polyethylene Glycol and Polyvinyl Alcohol Onto a CF Surface

Yi-Kai Zhan,Shuai Du,Min He,Dao-Hai Zhang,Yu-Fei Liu,Li-Ping Li

In this study, a carboxy esterification reaction was used to graft the hydrophilic polymers polyethylene glycol (PEG) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) onto the surface of carbon fibers (CFs). The properties of the grafted CFs were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), thermogravimetric analysis (TG) and through the measurement of interlaminar shear strength (ILSS). SEM enabled the graft morphology on CF surfaces to be determined. In comparisons of grafted and non-grafted CFs, AFM indicated that the roughness was significantly improved; XPS showed that the concentration of oxygen-containing functional groups increased by 186.1%; TG showed that the grafting rate of CF -grafted PEG ( CF -g-PEG) was 0.5%, and that of CF -grafted PVA ( CF -g-PVA) was 2.0%; and the ILSS of CF -g-PEG and CF -g-PVA increased by 22.7% and 43.0%, respectively. We conclude that esterification grafting is an effective method for modifying the physicochemical properties of CFs and improving the interfacial adhesion of composites. POLYM. ENG. Synthesis and self-healing behavior of thermoreversible epoxy resins modified with nitrile butadiene rubber

Libang Feng,Hanwen Zhao,Xia He,Yanhua Zhao,Liuxiaohui Gou,Yanping Wang

Cracks may generate in epoxy resins, which can affect the comprehensive property and shorten service life. The problem is expected to be resolved by endowing epoxy resin with self-healing performance. Herein, a new kind of self-healing epoxy resin containing both Diels–Alder (DA) bonds and nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) has been developed. The self-healing performance and mechanical properties of as-prepared epoxy resins are investigated by qualitative observation and quantitative measuring. Results reveal that the as-prepared epoxy resins exhibit excellent self-healing performance and multiple repair ability, and the self-healing behavior is based on dual actions of thermal reversibility of DA reaction and thermal movement of molecular chains. Furthermore, the thermoreversible DA bonds contribute much to the recovery of mechanical property, while the incorporated thermoplastic NBR accelerates the whole healing process. The self-healing efficiency of epoxy resins can be enhanced markedly by introducing thermoplastic NBR. In addition, the self-healing epoxy resins also exhibit outstanding reprocessing performance, which makes it possible of recycling waste epoxy resin. POLYM. ENG.
